Multiple drive backups

Hi - I have a multiple hard drive array (system drive, audio drive, sample library drive) and wish to have autmoated backups over 3 mirrored drives... can Time Machine do this? In other words I want one backup drive to each primary drive. Thanks

I'll reflect what I think might be your setup and you can correct me.  You have one system drive and two external drives with live data on them.  You have three empty external disks you plan to use for backups.  I’ll give a Time Machine solution and a cloning solution.
Time Machine:
Time Machine can back up all three drives, with a caveat.  If you use Time Machine they must be backed up onto a single backup drive.  Thus the sum of the storage across your three live disks would need to fit on one large Time Machine backup drive, leaving some room to grow and for Time Machine’s scratch space.
When you plug in an external drive, Time Machine will automatically exclude it from the backup.  To include it, have it plugged in and then go to System Preferences > Time Machine > Options and remove it from the exclusion list.
Cloning:
If you want one backup drive for each live drive then you can use cloning backup software, such as Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) or Super Duper!  Cloning does not keep backups going back in time; it only clones the current state of the live drive.  That has several advantages.  (A) It is simpler software that is less prone to software and disk errors that happen with Time Machine occasionally.  (B)  If your live drive breaks there is no restore needed.  You simply start using the clone as your live drive and purchase another external disk as the clone-backup drive. (C) The system disk clone will be a bootable system drive so should your internal system drive fail you can boot from the external clone and be up and running in minutes.
Replication:
It is a good idea to maintain multiple backups.  I use a combination of Time Machine and CCC.  That meets the needs of going back in time and also avoiding the issues of Time Machine’s complexity.  If any of my backup drives should fail, I always have another backup to fall back on.  You could use a large fourth drive for the Time Machine backup.

  • Time Machine - using multiple drives when the first is not available

Hello I have been succussfully using Time Machine with my USB external drive. I have been connecting it to my MacBook Air from time to time. Manual backups as well as the hourly backups when the drive has been connected worked without any problem.
Recently, I connected Synology DiskStation (NAS) to my network and I have added it to the list of drives in my Time Machine setup. When my original external drive (first in the list) is not connected to my MacBook  the hourly backup is not initiated by the Time Machine at all. Manually started backup is runnign fine without any problem.
The external drive is annotated with exclamation mark in Time Machines list with "not available" error - and it seems that this is causing the interruption of automatic hourly backup to any drive.
Is there any way how to debug Time Machine? Or to get some logs of Time Machine?
Any similar experience with multiple drive backup when the first of them is disconnected most of the time...?
Thanks a lot for any help
    Petr

Perhaps you should address this to Synology's tech support. Apple doesn't provide any support for third-party NAS, so your best bet is with Synology.

  • Using multiple drives with Windows 7 Backup

I have a customer with a new PC running Windows 7 Pro. He has 3 Seagate 1TB USB drives that he swaps out nightly for backups. Currently, backups are being done using the built-in Windows 7 Backup.
His previous PC ran XP and used the program which is pre-loaded onto Seagate drives to install onto PCs. He used this with the 3 drives and had no problems.
However, this software on the drives would not install on his Windows 7 PC because I presume it to not be compatible, even in compatibility mode.
The problem now is that each time he swaps in a different drive, the backups fail because it's a different drive and the backup software can't seem to handle multiple drives. With Windows Server Backup, you can add multiple drives so that when you swap them,
backups still run. I can't seem to do that with Windows 7 Backup.
Does anyone know how to get multiple drives to work with the built-in Windows 7 Backup?
    Jonathan

In addition to the above persons' solution, you can choose a third software  instead of the built-in Windows 7 Backup tool, the backup software can make up for the deficiency of  the backup tool of Windows. You can search in Google, and
will find many kinds of software, Genie backup and AOMEI Backupper: http://www.backup-utility.com/ can be ok. Hope the freeware can give you suggestion.
AOMEI turned out to be the answer. It works well with multiple drives and provides an easy way the user can see if the backup succeeded or not. Thanks!

  • Time machine backup of multiple drive of one computer?

Can I use Time Machine to backup multiple drives of one computer?

Yes, assuming they're in a format Time Machine can back up. This doesn't include formats such as FAT32.

  • TimeMachine Backup to Multiple Drives

    Hi
I've asked similar questions before on using TimeMachine.  I'm stuck in confusion.
I have 3 external drives.  One drive A I store my photos and music.
I would like to be certain that my photos and music are backed up on each drive (B and C).
I've reviewed James Pond's extensive instructions, but I still feel lost.
I feel that I am creating conflicts by backing up to multiple drives.
Can someone walk me through step by step?
Or are there screen shots of my set up I can share that will allow someone to verify if I have things right or wrong?
    Thanks

    I think A Silverstone asked for a step-by-step procedure.
I have a similar issue I would like a procedure on.  Actually two identical issues.
    1. I wish to purchase Apples new 3TB tower Airport/Time Machine to replace a 1TB Airport extreme/Time Machine.  I want to migrate the old to the new using Apple processes/procedures without a lot of workaround.  How can this be done?  Does Apple have a procedure?
    2. I have a desktop with four drives (three 2TB & one 1TB) and wish at least two of them to be Time Machine capable, i.e., backup every hour like the Airport/Time Machine does.  Can this be done?  Does Apple have a procedure?
I want to migrate the old Time Capsule data to the new Time Capsule and to two HD's in the desktop.
The idea is to have backups for a Time Machine backup in the event of a power disruption or a hacker that might impact the tower Time Machine.  There are other reasons such as storage capacity using a daisy chain process.

  • Time machine osx server backup to multiple drives?

    Hello,
I've just discovered Time Machine for Mac OSx Server. It can act as a centralizad point for the backups of all the computers in the network, how cool!
I know that Time Machine "client" can back a system up to multiple drives. My question is, can I do something similar with Time Machine "server" so I can have more than one storage product onto which I can back up all the systems? That would be very interestin if I want to implement a off-site backup from all my systems.
I would love to hear your inputs. Thanks in advance,
    Regards,

I don't know. If the TM preference pane is scriptable then you could do it with an AppleScript. Unfortunately, TM is not designed to also schedule different backup times. For example, assume you could automate drive switching, you still need to tell TM to backup to one drive at some time then backup to another drive at a different time.
I suppose the latter could be done via a cron job as long as you did not use TM preferences to turn TM on in which case it will backup each hour automatically.
It seems to me you'd be better off using a different backup utility that would allow you to schedule such backups. For example:
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
    10. Tri-Backup (Commercial)
Others may be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Not all of the above will backup over a network, but most can backup to any mounted device including a network drive except SuperDuper!.
In an enterprise setting your best choice of the above is Retrospect. There are a few other enterprise level backup utilities (costly) that you can track down at VersionTracker or MacUpdate. BRU is an example.
Oh, and if you know how to use the command line you can use the Unix tools, ditto and rsync.

  • Using multiple drives for iMovie 10

Previoiusly, I have used multple drives to store my business & personal video files.  I don't see how to do that now with iMovie 10.  Now everything is in different Libraries.  When I click on any of my older Events, iMovie shows that it is empty.  How do I fix this?

  • Filestream Partitioning across multiple drives

I have a SQL 2008 R2 ENT database with the single [PRIMARY] filegroup, and a single FilestreamGroup.  The filestream has millions of records, cannot be restored, and is about to exceed the drive space limit.
The table with the single filestream column has a primary key column that is also the Cluster index key.  There is a Full Text index and several foreign key constraints to this table's primary key. All must be disabled prior to dropping and rebuilding
the index for partitioning (tried and tested).
The filestream must be spread across multiple drive letters, and have multiple partitions on each drive, to facilitate file-restores within SLA.  Due to its size, it may exceed the weekend maintenance window, and therefore must be done ONLINE to allow
the business to save new documents while the rebuild is in operation.
How should I cobble this up into Filegroups / Files?  A data filegroup per drive. What is Best Practice for the filestream?

I have never worked with it, but it seems very logical. If you create a partition that says that some data should be in other partition, the data has to be moved to that partition. And, yes, it has to remain in the old partition as well, in case you do a
restore to point-in-time. This is no different than if you just delete a row.
To get rid of the rows in the old partition, you need backup the transaction log, checkpoint and backup the log again, if memory serves.
As for the font issue, the editor in the web UI stinks. That's one reason I stick to the NNTP bridge.

  • Backing up multiple drives using TimeMachine

I currently only back up my internal drive on my iMac. I was thinking of also including one of my exteral drives as well. My question is, if I ever have to recover from a TimeMachine, how will that work? I assume backing up just the internal drive lets you recover to a new drive if that orginal drive should fail. But what if you are backing up multiple drives? Does it let you pick just one dirve to recover to? I know this sounds confusing, but I hope you see what I'm getting at...
    Thanks!

First of all you can check the Time Machine settings to see if the external drive can be backed up to the TM drive. I've only ever had the one external drive, it being the TM drive, and it certainly is not available but possibly another external HFS drive could be saved.
As for the restore, if you can backup the other external drive then I would expect it to show as a separate drive in the TM backup. I say this because when you do backup to TM, the backup file does list the HD/volume name. So in theory you would have two volumes listed in your backup. But as I have never done this it is purely a guess.

  • [OT] External media drive - Backup with Time Capsule

    Hi,
I have a Macbook Pro with 250GB HD and I want to get an external hard drive to store my large video files. I already have a 1TB Time Capsule that I use to backup my laptop. I would like the external drive to be big, either 1TB or 1.5TB, so I don't believe the Time Capsule would be large enough to completely back up the laptop and the external drive. I also would like a drive that would power up/down depending on my laptop's wake/sleep status, so I don't always have to power it manually. I have several options:
    1. Buy 750GB firewire external drive and have laptop and drive backup to 1TB Time Capsule. I'm not sure if Time Capsule allows multiple drives to backup to it. My concern though is if my drives get near full, the 1TB still won't be able to fully backup both drives as they cycle large files.
    2. Buy 2 external hard drives, connect 1 directly to the laptop and 1 to the USB port on my Time Capsule. I'm wondering whether Time Machine could perform 2 simultaneous backup paths: A. laptop to Time Capsule; B- external drives to each other.
    3. Connect a Raid 1 drive setup to USB port on Time Capsule via the Guardian Maximus:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/GM8U27H10G64/
This would be an elegant method that would enable redundancy in one place. Only concern is performance would be bottlenecked by USB 2.0 as I'm used to performance of Firewire 800 or Gigabit ethernet (I do video work)
Also, I've noticed some NAS storage enclosures but I'm hoping the Time Capsule is the best option for my needs.
I think option 3 is my best solution, but was just curious about other peoples' setups. Mac users never cease to amaze me with their creativity and innovation.
    Thanks,
    Alexander

USB isn't going to be the right at all for Video media files.
Time Capsule has no limitations to the number of drives it can back up... just that space limitation...
Most of us don't back up media files unless they are from tapeless formats such as RED, or P2 etc.. then we're looking at a lot more FW drives, or better yet, a tape drive to back up media with. Quantum makes these. If you are shooting from tape though, just backing up your internal HD is all you really have to do... as you can recapture from tape if the media drive goes down.

  • IMac 20",  5 External Drives:  Backup Options

Ok, I have an iMac 20" with a 250 gig drive. I have the following external drives:
    100 gig USB
    250 gig x 3 USB
    500 gig FW400
I was taking a lot of home videos from tape and used these multiple drives for capture, then rendering, then compress. Once done, I then began to fill them up with various things: ripped DVD's (that I own), moved my 12k+ iPhoto library to 1 drive, iTunes to another, etc.
So my question is, how the F can I back all of this up?
My gut tells me I'll need a 1 TB drive to consolidate everything to a single drive backup.
A friend suggested taking the physical drives and construct some sort of array or NAS solution (using Linux) out of what I got, essentially creating 2 x 500 gig arrays and using one to backup to the other.
I'm willing to spend about $500 to figure all of this out for a longer term solution. I have 25+ years in computers at a very technical level, but honestly don't want to spend weeks getting this sorted out. The Linux option doesn't scare me a bit, but from what I've seen thus far it's a bit more work than I really want to dedicate.
Any ideas, suggestions, options is greatly appreciated.

You might get an array for that money.
Let me start by saying that you should use your 250 for your iMac backup. Make certain that everything on your iMac is on that drive. This backs up everything you need, there. Now, go out and buy 2 of the largest drives/arrays/whatever you can, and whatever goes onj one, is backed up to the other.
EVERY file needs a backup. This is a good way to do it. They do make array enclosures which can add/swap drives out, and do it without losing or reformatting anything. That way, add more drives as you need. If you can handle the cost of 2 of those, you have a great setup. It can also grow with you. swap out old 200 GB drives for larger ones, as need and price allow.

  • Clean Install of Snow Leopard and Multiple Drives

    Greetings,
I want to do a clean install of Snow Leopard because of various issues carried over from previous upgrades and the like. I have the original 250 GB ATA drive and a 1 TB ATA drive installed, plus a couple of other external drives available via USB and Firewire. I was wondering if there would be a recommended configuration of the install of the OS utilizing the multiple drives? i.e. using the 250 GB drive exclusively for the OS and the 1 TB drive for Applications, music files, photos, games, etc. would I have to make any specific changes to the location of any of the folders and would this create any problems when doing so? Am I over thinking this? I am a little confused as to how to approach this. Please help any advice will be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

What kind of issues? There are very few that warrant a clean install to eliminate & some that will just recur until you find & eliminate their real cause.
I was wondering if there would be a recommended configuration of the install of the OS utilizing the multiple drives?
The only ones I recommend are those that dedicate a drive other than your normal startup one for backups. To be clear, I mean that the originals & the backups should be on entirely different drives, not just on different partitions of the same drive.
i.e. using the 250 GB drive exclusively for the OS and the 1 TB drive for Applications, music files, photos, games, etc. would I have to make any specific changes to the location of any of the folders and would this create any problems when doing so? Am I over thinking this?
Yes, you are probably over thinking this.
There are some advantages to using a different drive for user files & possibly even for the entire user home folder, but there are also possible problems for any configuration different from the standard one with the OS, apps, & all user folders on the same startup drive. As already suggested, you can move large users folders for some apps like iTunes libraries to a different drive (or even split the media content among different drives) but unless you have a compelling reason to do so, it is much simpler to leave everything in the default configuration.

This was suggested by the Backup Assist - software vendor....

    ...for 0x81080101:
"ERROR - The shared restore point operation failed with error (0x81000101)
The creation of a shadow copy has timed out. Try again this operation."
If you receive the above error in your report, we have recently found a registry key which
contains the timeout value set by Microsoft for VSS and found that you can edit this to extend it.
To get to the registry key, open Regedit (Start > Run > Regedit) and browse to:
    "HKLM\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\SPP\\CreateTimeout".
    Change value to 1200000 (2*10*60*1000 = 20 mins).
The default for the timeout period is 10 mins so hopefully doubling this will give enough time to
    complete the snapshot.
If this isn't present, you'll need to manually enter the registry key. It's a DWORD 32-bit key.
--> NOTE: HAve not done this yet.

--> Related to Windows backup and not VSS?
2155348001 - 0x80780021 - Windows Backup timed-out before the shared protection point was created.
Should we run the "FIXVSS08.BAT" script - restarts services and re-registers DLL's - does this ever help?
Will this server need a reboot since VSS is in a state and we can't even test backups?
Is there a tool we can use to debug VSS or troubleshoot or OS backups further?
MSReport/Diag, VSS debugging, or another way of helping fix our OS(SystemState/C: drive) backup issues?
Any help is greatly appreciated - thx.

    Scot Pichelman

    Hi Scot,
Sometimes a third party backup application will change the default VSS provider adding VSS writers which causes Windows Server Backup using an incorrect component in doing backup, that's why I suggest to delete it for a test. Anyway you can reinstall it
    after testing.
And as you said a high-load CPU could also be the cause of the issue so you may need to first rule hardware effective out.
If issue still exists, please try the steps below as well:
    1. Please check DCOM Server Process Launcher service is started.
    2. If not, try to change RPC service to run as SYSTEM account. To do this please modify the following key:
Note: Backup the key before edit incase it cause any issue.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\RpcSs\
Find "ObjectName" and change the value to LocalSystem.
Reboot to see if DCOM back to work and if Windows Server Backup starts working. If not, please provide the result if there is any new error occurs.
If DCOM still not work, please compare the content of the following key with a working server:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\OLE
Edit if there is any difference and make sure you created a backup of the key before editing.

  • Hard Drive Backup Utility - Question

I have a P67A-GD55 and everything is working wonderfully. I would like more information concerning the Hard Disk Drive Backup Utility in the BIOS.  The BIOS Version is 1.9 and that came on the board from the time of purchase.
I can get to the HARD DRIVE BACKUP option in BIOS and it seems like it times out waiting for something...which I have yet to figure out.
My intention is to do a complete backup to an another drive LETTER: which is currently the identical sized partition on the same physical drive. I was able to use CLONEZILLA x64 but would prefer to use the built in Utility.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    My System;
    MSI P67A-GD55 B3 Stepping (Bios version 1.9)
    I7 2600K
    G.SKILL 8Gb DDR3 1600   F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL
    MSI N5500GTX-Ti Video card
    Hitachi 2Tb 7200 6Gb SATA Hardrive
    Win 7 Home Prem x64

i dont recommend windows backup utility, not comprehensive enough.
if u are a home user, there are many free utilities out there.
drive backup, true image and todo backup are all good backup tools.
they are all can help you.
    personally, i use todo backup.
