Multiple duplicates of contacts on multiple devices

I have an iPhone, iPad, an iMac and a Mac Mini.  I am using the latest versions of Mountain Lion and IOS.  I have multiple copies of the same individual contacts everywhere.  For example, for one catering company I have:
- three identical contacts in my contact app on my Mac
- the same three identical contacts in my contact app on my iPad
- five contacts on my iPhone, 4 are identical to themselves and those on my pad and Mac, but the 5th has two "linked contacts" that point to the other individual contacts for this catering company
- three identical contacts in my contacts in iCloud
So my question is, basically, how to I clean all of this up?  If I sit at my Mac, can I delete contacts in the Cloud and have these lead to being deleted on my other devices?
Rocketman

First open your contacts on your Mac and back them up now that they are cleaned up, by going to File>Export>Calendar Archive.  Then go to Settings>iCloud on your phone and turning Contacts to Off.  When prompted, choose Delete from My iPhone.
If you still have any contacts on your phone, download the app My Contacts Backup.  Open the app, tap the gear shaped icon on the lower right, scroll to the bottom and tap Remove All Contacts.  This will remove any remaining contacts from your phone.  When all contacts are removed from your phone, check to be sure you have set iCloud as the Default Account on your phone for contacts in Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars.  (If you don't have multiple accounts for contacts you won't see this setting.)  Finally, go to Settings>iCloud and turn Contacts back to On to sync back the contacts in iCloud to your phone.

I have multiple duplicate of contacts in my iPhone. Currently stand at 6000 plus & iPad has 24,000 plus contacts. Help.

    Bummer.
Sounds like you've managed to create a sync loop. Look at what you're syncing them with. Make sure you're not syncing them to a cloud service that's also syncing to an address book that's syncing to another cloud service that's syncing to the phone... etc.

  • What is the best way to sync multiple collections of contacts among multiple users?

(I originally submitted this question under the "Mac OS X Technologies" section, but got no response. I'm submitting a duplicate here because this is where all the smart folks are! My apologies that my question is only partially related to OS X Server . . . )
What is the best way to sync multiple collections of contacts among multiple users on iOS and OS X?
For example, suppose I have three collections of contacts: Bob's, Sally's, and Common. I want Bob to be able to access and sync Bob's contacts and Common contacts, and Sally to access and sync Sally's contacts and Common contacts. Bob and Sally never need to access or sync each other's contacts. Bob and Sally would both sync and share contacts in Common.
How would I best implement this? It's my understanding I have three options for managing contacts across iOS and OS X: 1. iCloud accounts, 2. Install OS X server, or 3. Install and manage Darwin CardDAV directly. Which method would best support what I wish to do?
I am a seasoned Unix geek well versed in the terminal, so I am prepared to get my hands dirty as much as necessary to achieve what I want. Also, it is sufficient if syncing takes place over WiFi on the local network, in fact, that is desirable versus syncing over the cloud.

Thanks for your reply Nick101. I see my example was oversimplified. When I say "multiple groups of contacts over multiple users" I'm really referring to N groups of contacts over N users.
So I need to add Fred, who can access and sync Bob's contacts, Sally's contacts, and Common contacts, as well as Fred's contacts. Can I do it with OS X server?
You mention you keep your and your partner's contacts administered locally. What keeps you from administering them through OS X server as well?
I am guessing this can all somehow be accomplished with multiple contact accounts, but I can't find any information on the web explicitly describing this.

Thank you for reaching back out to us, if your contacts are backed up by GMail, if you log in to your account on a PC, they should appear online under the Contacts tab. Try this also, if you go to Contacts>Settings icon(three vertical dots button) Settings>Contacts to Display> What options are selected? This screen will help you pick and choose what contacts list to display.

  • HT201269 how do I merge multiple duplicate contact entries with cell home and e-mail entries

how do I merge multiple duplicate contact entries with cell home and e-mail entries?

    Try linking cards:
Open any contact you want to merge, tap on Edit and look at the bottom part of it.  You'll find 'Link Cards' and from there you may select the contact you want to link with the one you're looking at. So if you have:
    Contact 1: John A (job)
Contact 2:  Business Name (who is also John A but you saved it as a different contact)
Contact 3: Something else that's also John A
You can link all three cards into one.  If you choose to, you may unlink them at any time, just tap Edit and then the red circle. Your contacts won't be deleted, but they won't appear under the same ID anymore.

  • Contact sheet only shows single image; need multiple duplicates

I'm trying to print an image using the "Contact Sheet" setting. I need to output a page containing multiple instances of one single image. When I select the image and select "Contact Sheet," it shrinks the single image down and sticks it in the top-left box of what should be a page full of that single image ... but it's only creating a single instance of the image, and the rest of the blocks on the contact sheet are blank.
I'm ready to put my fist through the monitor. Please help before it's too late. Thanks.

  • Contacts with Multiple Backup Assistant + Contacts Entries

I have read others with these same issues.  Unfortunately, the responses they are getting have to do with having multiple contacts and joining those contacts.  That is not the issue.  The issue is that each contact has MULTIPLE Backup Assistant + Contact entries.  Meaning, when you you start typing a name to send a text message to, it shows you multiple phone numbers for that person (only, they are all the same phone number).  For example, if I start typing Zoe, it will show you contacts that match, it will have Zoe 555-555-5555 listed 6, 7, 8, or more times.  But wait, that is the home number, how you keep scrolling them until you get to the mobile number which is also listed 6, 7, 8 or more times.  When you go into you contacts and select Zoe, and then go to Edit, you see why - There are 6, 7, 8 or more Backup Assistant + Contacts entries!!!  These duplicates are what we are wanting to know how to remove.  My daughter has only one phone number, but when I click on the her picture in the favorite contacts widget, it shows 2 and they are both the same.  Even the BAL #225 shows up EIGHT times!!!!!   When you go online (to the Backup Assistant), they are all listed there too.  HELP!!!!!!!

I have no prblem syncing multiple mobile numbers so I don't think it's a universal issue with iOS. The only difference I see is I am using CardDav instead of using the Exchange option. Have you tried it that way? You can urn off contacts in the Exchange account and add the CardDav account separately.

  • Single Contact in multiple Groups without duplicating

Did a lot of searching but can't seem to find a straight answer on this one. I have created groups to use as distribution lists. The only problem I have is that a lot of my contacts need to be in multiple groups. Seems like the only way to do this is to duplicate the contact which will turn into a management nightmare.
Does anyone have suggestions on how to do this, I am willing to pay ofr a 3rd party app if required.
    Thanks

Thanks for the help, let me clarify some...
This is in Address Book on OSX 10.6.6, no third party programs.
So, if I have my main contacts foleder, then Group A and Group B. If I drag a contact from the main contact folder to Group A it works. But now I need that same contact in another group... If I drag the same contact (from the main contact folder) to group B it will complete but will remove it from Group A.
I have tried this on three different MAC's with the same result.

  • Choosing an email address on contacts with multiple addresses

Has anyone found a way, using Siri, to choose which email address to send to when a contact has multiple addresses?  She asks which address would you like me to send the message to and I have found no way to verbally choose and address.

You cannot rename the labels in Outlook except by modifying the Contact form.  Which, as a developer, I can do.  However, my fear is that it won't be pushed to the iPhone since they already have unique identifiers now and they are only showing up on the iPhone as "email".  While it may be that Exchange only labels them as email Android devices equate E-mail to Business Email and E-mail 2 as Home Email by default.
Maybe the next iterration of Siri will allows us to chose first, second, or third.
    Thanks for trying!
