Multiple formats of the same file

I'm using LR 1.2 and notice that if I have a JPG and either raw or dng of the same file in a folder LR shows one entry in the grid and "filename.dng+jpg" for the filename. If I have all three (jpg, nef, dng) it will only show the dng+jpg and treats the nef like a duplicate in the catalog if I try to import it. So:
1) Which file is being used if you make LR edits and export?
2) If you delete this entry from the catalog and disk - do you loose both files?
3) Is there a setting to show the actual individual files rather than combine them like this?
It's confusing the heck out of me.

Make sure you have "treat jpeg files next to raw files as separate photos" preference checked if you like to see the jpeg as:
1) Lightroom uses the jpeg ONLY for the very first preview. After that, everything is done using the raw file. The jpeg is basically ignored completely as the RAW is considered the original. You really only need the nef or dng file.

3) Yes, you have to import using the preference noted above. In this case you'll get multiple entries for the same picture but with different original files.
Lastly, for Lightroom there is no real difference between the nef and the dng as the data in it is the same. If both are present it will probably use just the dng but I have never tried it. Having multiple files with the same filename but different extension is generally a recipe for disaster not just in Lightroom.

I'm using SQL*Loader to import semi-colon separated values into a table. The files are delivered to us by a data provider who concatenates data from different sources and this results in us having different date formats within the same file. For example:
...;2010-12-31;22/11/1932;...
I load this data using the following lines in the control file:
EXECUTIONDATE1 TIMESTAMP NULLIF EXECUTIONDATE1=BLANKS "TO_DATE(:EXECUTIONDATE1, 'YYYY-MM-DD')",
DELDOB TIMESTAMP NULLIF DELDOB=BLANKS "TO_DATE(:DELDOB, 'DD/MM/YYYY')",
The relevant NLS parameters:
NLS_LANGUAGE=FRENCH
NLS_DATE_FORMAT=DD/MM/RR
NLS_DATE_LANGUAGE=FRENCH
If I load this file as is the values loaded into the table are 31 dec 2010 and 22 nov *2032*, aven though the years are on 4 digits. If I change the NLS_DATE_FORMAT to DD/MM/YYYY then the second date value will be loaded correctly, but the first value will be loaded as 31 dec *2020* !!
How can I get both date values to load correctly?

This is very strange, after running a few tests I realized that if the year is 19XX then it will get loaded as 2019, and if it is 20XX then it will be 2020. I'm guessing it may have something to do with certain env variables that aren't set up properly because I'm fairly sure my SQL*Loader control file is correct... I'll run more tests :-(

Multiple images of the same file on one page

How do I create multiple images of the same file on one page? For example, I've got an image that I could fit 6 of on one page, and would like to print it that way instead of printing it on 6 individual pieces of paper.

Are you attempting to do this in Adobe Workspaces? Or are you looking for software that will do it?
If the former, you could insert the image into a Buzzword document six times. Not exactly elegant, but it might do the trick.

Can I create multiple links to the same file without duplicating file?

does anyone know if it is possible to create multiple links to the same file using iWeb without the program automatically making multiple copies of that file in the published output? It seems that one file is created for each link.

When saving a File OS Is Creating Multiple Folders With The Same File Name

Not sure what I changed but, now when I save a any file (ppt. word, Keynote,Pages e.g.,) to the desktop or any other location the OS will also create multiple file folders with the same file name as the file I'm saving. Inside the folders are what appears to be files locating the saved files. What can I do to fix this problem?
I'm using the 10.7.2 version

the extension is simply hidden. go to the get info panel for the file and uncheck the option to hide the extension.
Then I surf to another image, and again I save it as "000.jpg" and now it asks me if I want to replace the existing filename, although the existing one is "000" and I try to save as "000.jpg", so I say yes, and then magically the file is saved with the full filename including the extension "000.jpg"
When I did it a couple of times, always saving image as "000.jpg" from various sources, I ended up with two distinct files named "000" and both in the same folder Pictures.

it sounds to me like you saved one file as 000.jpg and the other and 000.jpg.jpg.
check the info panels for the files for full names to verify if this is the case.

HT1660 if i create a copy in mp3 format in itunes from the mp4 music i already have in itunes it puts both formats in the same file is there a way of seperating the two formated albums from each other completely but keep them in itunes

Select the Songs view. Use the Search window to display the tracks from the album. Turn on the Kind column and sort on it. Give each version of the album a distinct title. E.g. Album [AAC] and Album [MP3].

Itunes shows multiple listings for the same files (songs), help ???

dunno why, but Itunes is showing mulitple listing for my file (songs), is there a way to clean this up instead of going through the list one by one to get rid of the extra listing...?? thank you in advance...

It looks like you have duplicate entries in the library (two entries pointing to the same song file), but you could also have duplicate files.
Add the 'Date Added' column to the library (View Options, Command-J) and sort on 'Date Added'.
If many songs show the same recent 'Date Added' and you didn't actually add them that day, those ones obviously are the duplicates.
Compare a few of those entries with their duplicate ones.
Do they point to the same file? If so, delete the last added ones, but choose 'Keep Files'.
If they point to different files, delete the last added ones and choose 'Move to Trash'
If the above does not help, you might find a useful script at www.dougscripts.com/itunes
Search for "duplicate" to find the appropriate scripts.
You will still have to remove the entries manually though.

How can I merge multiple versions of the same file?

I have a number of PDF ebooks that I read on multiple devices, and I highlight selections of interest, then save the modified files. Using Acrobat XI, is there a straightforward way to merge all of these changes into a single master file for each book?
For example, I read and highlighted Chapters 1 and 2 on my home computer, and Chapters 3-6 at work. I'd like to merge the home and work files (which are identical apart from the highlighting) so that I have a single file that's highlighted in Chapters 1-6. These tend to be large files, so comparing them manually page by page isn't really an option.

Yes, it's possible.
Open a file and click on the Comment button to open the panel. In the Comments List click on the Options button and select "Export All to Data File...". Save the file somewhere on your computer. Do the same for the other files.
Now open a blank version of the file and do the same but select "Import Data File..." from that menu. Select all the files you've saved and you'll have a merged version of all the comments from the various versions.

How to store multiple edits of the same file

When I edit photos I typically create several versions of the same photo. The first edit I will end the filename with an "x". The second edit I will end with a "y", etc. For a black and white edit the file name ends with "bw". An edited version scaled down for sharing will typically end with it's long side dim i.e. IMG_2345_960.jpg. I'm new to Lightroom and it looks like only one version is stored in the data base. Can multiple versions be saved in the catelog? How would I set my version system up in Lightroom? Thank You.

You can also use "snapshots". Snapshots are saved and when you open a RAW file just select the snapshot you want and output the image.

Help: 10.0.1 update for multiple languanges is the same file as for Tier 1 languages.

I'm trying to deploy the 10.0.1 update to my corporation. I need the multiple language update. When I go to the Downloads site for Adobe Reader, the update for multiple languages languages is the exact same file as the update for Tier 1 languages. I've called (yes, and actually held on long enough to speak to someone) twice asking for clarification on the files. The first time I was told this would be escalated to the web team and to call back. Over a week later no change to the files on the download site so I had to call in again and go through the same painful process to get the person on the phone to understand the problem. Has anyone already gone through this and determined whether that update is Tier 1 or multiple languages? Thank you very much.

Multiple computers sharing the same files ?

Hi All;
per the license agreement my wife and I installed Aperature on two (2) machines. We've recently bought a Lacie 2TB network attached storage device. I want to find a way to stage the aperture libraries/projects on the NAS so each of us has access to the same Aperature library/projects when we open the copy of Aperture on our respective computers.
Thoughts? Is thee a 'best practice' method of doing this that will allow us to share the files, not hog up local disk space and maximize performance ?

Hi, there are many posts on this topic. The underlying DB structure of the Aperture library file is not multi-user. Nothing prevents simultaneous access, but there are no controls over writing ... which means your index file will get corrupted.
So, no. Not recommended. Not recommended at all.
If you can have separate library files (yes, you can rename the aplibrary to His.aplibrary and Hers.aplibrary) on the NAS and avoid contention and conflicts.
Hope you connect by wire, as wireless throughput is dependent on distance from the WAP and subject to interference.

Adding multiple subreports from the same file to the same report

I've created a report. This reports needs to have a number of charts. Each chart is the same report with different values for parameters.
The code works, except all charts reflect the parameter value provided to last call to SetParameterValue. How can I make sure each subreport behaves as a separate instance?

The parameter collection is global, so if you set it for one it's going to be set for all. You need to manage the subreport links, which holds the parameters.
Or when you add the subreport you also need to add a parameter with a new name and set the value accordingly in the Parameter collection.

Opening duplicate copies of the same File in CS4

Hi
I have recently upgraded some of my customers from CS3 to CS4 and I have noticed that when I open a document that was last opened in CS3 i can open the file more than once and they get listed as tabs. If i make changes to the the first open document and save it, the changes do not effect the other open copies of the file.
however once i have saved the file in CS4, if i try and open the document again it simple brings up the already open file in Indesign.
Is their any way I can make this the default behaviour for all documents, as a number of my clients have complained that they have accidentally opened the file more than once and they save the document and close it down and when they close the duplicate copies down and click save it overwrites all the work previously done.

I'm not sure what you want to change the default behavior to, but I'm pretty sure there's no way to change it. This is no different than the way previous versions opened old-version files, except that CS4 shows you the multiple, same-named files as tabs instead of as separate windows. If you want ID to behave exactly as it did in previous versions, you can turn off the tabs in preferences (Edit > Preferences > Interface > Open documents as tabs).
Why do you want to open multiple copies of the same file? If you're converting from CS3 to CS4, why not just open the CS3 file and Save As to a new name?
Keep in mind that CS4 H&Js slightly differently than CS3. You can expect to see some minor text re-wrap going from CS3 to CS4 (but not until you start editing a story). It's always a good idea to finish CS3 jobs in CS3, start new jobs in CS4.

Multiple File formats of the same Video

I currently have two files for movies. One file is for my Apple TV the other is for my iPad/iPhone. Is there any way to filter the iPad/iPhone versions so they are not selectable on Apple TV?
The only solution I can think of is making two libraries, but that seems overly complex for a simple request.

I personally don't recall seeing such a script that does all those things simultaneously, however you can find examples of each (like the few you have already discovered) as a starting point for creating such a script. If you search, here or elsewhere along with reading the scripting documentation and the examples provided in there you should find everything you need to get started and accomplish such a script.
