Multiple Graphics Cards Inquiry

Im curious how OSX can handle multiple graphics cards efficiently?
like a x1900 and my 8800 or even a x1900 and a 38x0 and 8800 but the drives in windows dont allow for them to all coexist ?
im just curious how its so easily "PnP" with graphics cards and drivers? do they just get assigned to whats installed and thats it? i take it OSX is preloaded with an assortment of drivers?

OSX includes drivers for all the hardware used in Apple computers (and for many printers). At boot times, drivers are loaded for all the hardware devices that are detected.

  • FCP 7 Multiple Graphics Cards & 3 Displays

With FCP 7 (Studio 3) has Apple fixed the issue that you can't have multiple graphics cards and more than 2 displays as was the problem with prior versions?

I did the typical; post a question then play around with the problem routine here.
I've found a solution where i put the "playout monitor" on the same card as screen 1. move screen 2 to another card and make the relevant adjustments to the displays arrangement panel so everything is the same layout as before. FCP now plays out to the correct monitor it seems it can't handle sending to other cards.
    i'm running 10.5.8 and FCP 6.0.6

  • Problems with Photoshop CS6 Recognizing Multiple Graphics Cards

    Hi,
I have a quad monitor setup with two graphics cards with the latest drivers downloaded today and installed directly off of the manufacturer's websites:
    1) AMD Radeon R9 200 Series 4GB GDDR5
    2) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 1GB GDDR5
I have Photoshop CS6 64-bit (along with the rest of the Adobe Design and Web Premium) installed on my computer - which I uninstalled and reinstalled today also - and it's claiming that it has detected an error with my display driver. The Graphics Processor Settings box in Preferences is greyed out, and I've used the shift+ctrl+alt to reset preferences and check again to no avail. I've also set both of my graphics cards to turn on OpenGL Triple Buffering and to let the 3D application decide the image settings. Here's my system info, where you can see that the GPU sniffer crashed and that no video card is detected:

Yes Adobe states if you use more then one GPU adapter they should be the same else Photoshop may have problems. Photoshop CC and CC 2014 GPU FAQ
Are you using more than one video card?
Multiple video adapters can cause problems with GPU-accelerated or enabled features in Photoshop. It's best to connect two (or more) monitors into one video adapter. If you have to use more than one video adapter, make sure that they are the same make and model.
Otherwise, crashes and other problems can occur in Photoshop.
Note: Using more than one video adapter does not enhance Photoshop's performance.

  • Keynote with multiple graphics cards

    Hello all
I will try and keep this a brief as possible. I am currently finished of an AV install in a local Christian Centre. As part of this we have installed a video system for displaying notices and live feeds of services and events. One of the members of the church has purchased 2 PCs with the purpose of displaying 2 different sets of notices in the reception area and the main hall. However for reasons that I won't go into here they completely mess the system up causing all sorts of interference problems.
As part of the install we are going to be supplying them with a Mac pro with final cut to record events and produce DVDs of them.
My question is if we were to add a second graphics card and iWork could keynote be set to use this card for it's output? And if it were would it leave the main output free (showing the desktop) for other uses?
I know that with dual output cards the second output can be set to either mirror of show notes but there is no info in the help about what happens with multiple cards that would provide 4 outputs.

No, Keynote takes over all the screens when presenting, and I'd think if you tried to edit in FCP when you were also running a show (if you could) it would likely bog BOTH programs down badly.
You could export your presentations into QT and have the QT player running on one screen, but still, if you fire up FCP, everything's a different ball game then.
I suggest leaving the FCP system on its own, don't try to do multiple things with it at the same time.

  • Java3D with Multiple Graphics Cards

I am currently developing an application that has a 3D component. The application is targeted to be spanned across 3 monitors using 2 graphics cards.

  • Multiple graphics cards on 2008 mac pro, won't work

Hi, I have a 2008 Mac Pro 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon with 14 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM. I have used a ATI Radeon HD 2600 Graphics card connected to 2 x BenQ E2400HD screens. Now, I want 4 screens so I bought a NVidia Geforce 8800 GT graphics card as I found these to be compatible with my setup on Ebay (only place I could find it). Got it in a brand new condition in a Apple graphics card box so should be all good. Put it in PCI-E slot 2. Now when I started my Mac after installing I could hear a loud fan noise (fan going on max speed) and tracked it to the new graphics card. When I open the system profiler it shows up as a display. The screen connected to the graphics card with a DVDI-cable does not show an image and the screen indicates that it does not have an input. Any ideas what's wrong here? Is my graphics card broken?

More than likely you got wrong verion.
1,1 and 2,1 Mac Pros are EFI32, and for Nvidia cards need proper version.
If your machine is a 3,1 or later you need an EFI64 version.
    Contact the seller and clarify.
If you install "ATY_Init" and are running 10.6.8 you will find the card will work once machine boots all the way.
You could then flash the card into proper version if you were especially clever with things like that.
But your seller should help you.
You need to know "Model Identifier"

  • Expansion Box _ Multiple Graphic cards Crash

    Hello
I have this configuration: I work on Octane render With Maxon Cinema 4D. I bought an expansion box to have 4 extra Titan's card to speed my render.
Adobe CS6 coud run side by side with this conf runing.
Since my update to Adobe CC, Premiere pro check graphic cards present on the computer and don't understand whats going on with the box plug in the second PCI express card. So premiere Crash every time my box is on.
So in my Workflow I'm obiged to shut down the box every time I want to work with Premiere.
    My Question:
Where I can ask to an engineer to lean over my problem, to have the oportunity to Premiere do do like in CS6 and use only one graphic card. It certainly be easy to check or uncheck this option in the pref.
With the futur Mac pro it will have this problem too because the expansion box will be obliged.

  • Late 2004 powermac and multiple graphics cards?

    Hey,
I have a late 2004 powermac g5 that currently has the fx5200 graphics card. i want to know if i used pci graphics cards could i run 6 displays off this machine? i know it can be done on the mac pro's but what about the g5. can i use the pci slots as graphics card slots or will i have to get a mac pro?
If i can use the pci slots what would be the best card to use? i know the output would not be the best but it is going to be running 6 acer v193w 19inch screens with vga.
    Thanks in advance

Which 2004 model is it, they have different PCI slots & speeds...

  • Mac pro - multiple graphics cards - multiple monitors - gaming?

    Hi there
Early 2008 I purchased a mac pro, with 2 8800gts and 1 2600xt. Works amazingly well, as it was originally purchased for number crunching (video cards were purchased to take advantage of openCL in snow leopard) and more screen realestate. (3 monitors)
But the thought occurred to me... I am also a bit of a gamer...
Are there any games that take advantage of multiple video cards???
Mac or windows game recommendations are welcomed!
    Thanks!

I'm sorry if my question was a little ambiguous, let me try to rephrase.
If anyone is familiar with the Nintendo DS system, you will understand that this handheld device has 2 screens.. one is used primarily as a game screen, the second screen has the game map or console or some kind of readout or whatever. Bottom line is, the game takes advantage of 2 screens.
My question to the masses is:
Are there any games in Mac OS or Windows that take advantage of multiple monitors, and therefore multiple video cards. Not SLI or Crossfire as I understand the Mac Pro hardware does not support it. My question relates to any software titles like Flight Simulators, that can render images on 2 screens connected to 2 separate video cards.
I have a copy of XPlane, and unfortunately, it only supports multiple monitors on a single video card, not multiple monitors on multiple video cards.
    So, just rehashing,
Are there any games that are capable of rendering images or gameplay on 2 different video cards at the same time?
    If so, what are they?
Cheers and sorry for the confusion.

  • Are multiple graphics cards without multiple monitors helpful?

I have a Mac Pro with two graphics cards in it, but only one monitor. (I was/am considering getting some more monitors but haven't done so yet. The monitor is hooked up to the more powerful graphics card.) I was just wondering if, in theory or practice, there's any benefit to having a graphics card in the Mac without a monitor hooked up to it? OpenCL should mean that the Mac is able to take advantage of the processing and VRAM capacity of the card even if it's not generating pixels to be output, right? Maybe I just answered my own question.

There can be if you have a GTX 680 for CUDA and use an AMD card for monitors IF the program or plugins are written to do so. normally, no.

  • Multiple Graphics Cards

The Apple Website where you can customize your Mac Pro has the option to buy up to 4 GeForce 7300 GT Cards. Why would one want to buy 4 of these? Just not sure what these do in tandem.
    Thanks -

But to clarify, you can fit two ATI's but they don't work in Crossfire mode so you you are not getting combined 1 GB performance to a single monitor in games, just can hook up two additional monitors.
I think we seriously need more video card options (delete me again probably Apple)
but I do get excellent performance in Flight Sim 2004, passable to awful in Flight Sim X, and excellent frame rates in X-Plane 8 & especially in the new version 9 with my ATI 1900 XT.
An updated 768 or 1 GB graphics card option would be outstanding, especially if there were also some CrossFire or combined capability but not sure even possible on Mac Pros.
That said I bought (and returned) a Dell XPS 720 HC over-clocked, liquid cooled
gaming machine specifically to get better performance in flight sims (FSX) and even with two nVidia 768MB cards the performance wasn't really that much better than on the Mac Pro - not anywhere near $5000 worth better.

  • Multiple graphics cards and optical drives

    Hi folks,
I am getting a Mac Pro 2012, it has two graphics cards and two optical drives.
My first questions are regarding the graphics cards.
    1. If i only use one of the cards, will the other card simply power down or will Mac OS utilize it's GPU to enhance the OS?
    2. Is it better to use both my displays on one card or put one display on each? What are the pro's and cons?
My question regarding the optical drives is; when i hit eject on my keyboard, will both trays open or will OS X give me an option to choose a tray to open?
An additional question is; if i use Disk Utility to turn two of the hard drives into a RAID, will it be slow? The Mac doesn't have an actual RAID card so will i see slower performance if i mirror two drives or set it up as a striped RAID opposed to using them as two individual drives?
I have not used a desktop Mac since i had a G4 hence the "new to mac pro" questions.
    Appreciate your feedback
    Jay

Two gpu only help or matter if one is doing something that uses CUDA and you have Nvidia.
    Normally no benefit.
Software RAID0 may make sense for scratch or large media libraries.
Instead of using a mirror, skip that and clone your drives makes more sense.
The Apple Pro RAID card is slower and more trouble and not worth it.

  • Multiple Graphics Cards Handling

    Hello,
I have two graphics cards in my PC. I am using one graphics card to connect to my monitor and other graphic card is used for generating some VGA patterns. How can I achieve feeding test patterns to one particular graphics card alone using LabWindows. I am storing patterns in my PC directories.
    Please advice me..
    Thanks,

    Hi,
You should have an C API (a software driver library) for controlling your VGA generator.
Ask your vendor for that. Some provide it for free, some may require additional cost.
Without some tool that "knows" the internals of your card, it may not be possible to operate it.
What brand/model is your VGA card?

  • Trouble configuring Xserver for multiple graphics cards

I suspect I have a fairly simple problem but am getting in over my head and need some help setting up a multihead X configuration.
I have a plain vanilla installation of Solaris 9 on an Ultra 60, 1.5GB, 2x450 MHz CPUs, originally configured with one Elite3D lite card in the 64 bit/66 MHz PCI slot as a single head installation. All ran fine.
I have now added a pair of Elite3D-m3 cards in the 2 UPA slots. At boot, the Elite3D in the first UPA slot comes up as the character mode console device and the OS boots normally up to the point of starting X/CDE desktop then defaults to the console login with " ...could not start X server..." error message .
I configured the Xservers file to include the two Elite as the default display :0.0 on /dev/fbs/afb0 and /dev/fbs/afb1, but on closer examination, found that the devices do not exist in /dev or /dev/fbs.
I do have a device /dev/fbs/ifb0 corresponding to the Expert3D lite card, known to function normally as a single headed machine.
    Here are the questions:
    1. How do I obtain and install the necessary device files, /dev/fbs/afb0 and /dev/fbs/afb1 to allow the two Elite3Ds to drive 2 monitors under X/CDE? What are the necessary packages needed to drive the Elite3Ds?
    2. In the meantime, how can I start the Xserver in the expert3D card? The Xserver will not start (gives errors) by simply defining :0.0 to be /dev/fbs/ifb0 (Expert3D lite) in /usr/dt/config/Xserver. This device is not the default Solaris character mode boot console device, so I am not sure how to set up the Xserver file to run the X session on this card **alone** to tide me over pending Elite3D's configured and running and the new monitors are delivered.
I recall that CDE and X require special consideration for this situation where the boot console device and the graphical device to run X are not identical. The Xservers file comments refer to this problem but I cannot seem to find sufficient documentation to figure out how to configure this situation.
I would like to avoid ripping out the two just installed cards to get back to the original configuration.
Thanks for the help in advance.

Please note the following erratum: The original configuration was with an Expert3D lite in the 64bit/66 MHz PCI slot, not an Elite3D. Thanks.

  • Possible to Have Multiple Graphics Card Drivers Installed?

Is it possible to have both the nVidia propritary, nVidia legacy, and ATI open-source drivers installed all at the same time, because I have set up a portable Arch Linux system, and I want to have want to have 3D acceleration on all of them.
My computer has an Radeon X1300, and I'm using the open-source driver for it, and this one has a Riva TNT2 Model 64.  I think the comps in the tech lab also have nVidia cards, but newer.

nvidia and nvidia-xxxx conflicts with eatch other, so no. As said, only the drivers that comes with X.org play along with eachother. Welcome to the beautiful world of closed software.
You can have them both as packages an install 'em/uninstall 'em as needed...
You could make a nice simple script to run at startup so you can choose which xorg.conf to use, you could easily have many and just symlink them to xorg.conf as needed... all you kneed to know is some bash scripting.
I'd try and use a DAEMON aproach by creating and rc.d script, but you could try as you like
