Multiple Hard Drives and One Library...is it possible?
this is a repost, my last post got jacked.
Hi, I've been doing some looking around here already for a good solution, but have yet to find it, including some of the existing threads dealing with similar issues.
So here is my scenario: Laptop with a hard drive that is almost full, need to move two thirds to an external drive, however I need to maintain the integrity of the whole library (current playlists, playcounts etc), none of this option key launching stuff, and separate libraries. My concerns, with doing some initial testing, is that itunes still asks for the location of the music files when they have been moved to another drive, I don't want to and shouldn't have to re-locate each file individually (30+gbs). It seems like I either have to do one thing or the other can't do both. Move everything and re-direct it to the new location and re-import to the local drive, or go the option click route which I don't really want to (and I would lose some of my library info in the process). Is what I'm asking to do even possible with the constraints of splitting an existing library of music, with one library file & multiple drives?

You can check/change the permissions on the library folder in the Finder-File>GetInfo window. Set Group and Others to Read&Write.

I would like to know the best way to install both Photoshop and Lightroom on the storage devices. As you can see I will have two 3TB hard drives and one 250G SSD card.
For Photoshop I have read that it can be advantages to have the program on one drive the photos on another drive and the “scratch file’ on a third drive. It was even suggested that the PCs Operating system could be on a different drive than the program. Is this correct and if
so what is best to go on the SSD card? I will be partitioning the Hard Drives and I could even partition the SSD drive if that could help. In this case what size partitions are recommended?
If you can see a component below that you think would be an issue with running Photoshop and Lightroom, could you also let me know what you would recommend?

250Gb SSD is a good size, but you can still run short, and that will affect Windows performance. When you get your system, instal WinDirStat which gives you a graphic display of everything on your drive, like below. Clicking on any of the large areas will tell you what and where they are, so you can think about moving cache folders etc. to one of the HDDs.
Leave the Pagefile.sys on the boot drive. Think about disabling Hyphenate as it takes a ton of space, and too often crashes on wake up.

Think about another 500Gb drive just for Photoshop Scratch. Drives are cheap as chips nowadays
Do yourself a favour, and invest $100 in Shadow Protect (or similar if there is such a thing) SP saves incremental backups every 15 minutes (you can set the interval, but it has no impact on performance with a system like yours). If you have a problem you can mount the back up at any of those 15 minute points, and open files from it. You can also make a bootable DVD image of your C drive, and be back up and running five minutes after disaster strikes.

Music on hard drive, replaced hard drive and now library won't match up
I put all my cd's on a hard drive (9000 or so songs) and had a hard drive failure, so I moved all the songs to a new hard drive and now I can't use the Itunes library to connect with that hard drive, except one song at at a time.
Is there any way to get these two to communicate?
DavidIs the rest of your music located in a different folder? You'd need to know where those files are in order to add them to iTunes. If you're not sure of their location, try a Spotlight search. Are you not able to locate the files to add them to iTunes, or are you selecting them but they are not appearing in the iTunes library?
I have all the actual music files located on a external hard drive, but the itunes file name(s) are located on the computer. The problem started when I got a new computer and switched all the stuff over, and then got a new hard drive because the old one was making noises. I copied one hard drive directly over to the other and now am trying to connect the two so they talk together.
The fix you sent me semed to work great until I noticed that I did not have any music after the letter "a" (namely 1/36 of the music). I ried it again with another copy I had and lost that too. Now, I am working with the copy I had on the other computer, which doesn't have all the data, but does have most of it, and I can survive adding the other stuff later somehow by re-copying the music and getting the data over again, but I do want to somehow get the other 35 letters worth, if possible.

Getting data from multiple hard drives onto one drive
So here's the problem: I have a Quicksilver 867 I want to upgrade, it came with no HD so I want a new one, I put my old strawberry imac's HD into it because I still have a use for all the programs on it (i.e. photoshop) and I wanted to take advantage of the QS' hardware (superdrive), also I know my department is getting rid of their old G4 and that computer has some programs I would rather see being used than being erased, so is there a way to copy all the information from those two drives onto a new drive and still have those programs working good? I've read about HD copying software but am still hazy on how it will handle individual programs? If I have to copy the whole drive, would there be a problem with multiple system folders being on the new HD? I don't have much experience with this sort of thing, so I hope I'm describing the situation well enough.
I plan to buy Tiger and install it on the new HD and the old drives are running os 9.1 and 9.2 just to let you all know. If anyone can give me some advice I would be most grateful.

nickHaving multiple system folders on the same volume is a problem waiting to happen. The safest way to have trouble-free programs is to use the original installer CDs to load the software, so that all components (both visible and invisible) are written to their designated locations on the hard drive. Copying programs from another hard drive without ownership of the media is software piracy. If your employer doesn't use the programs on the soon-to-be discarded G4, why not ask if you can have or purchase the installer CDs?

Music files deleted from hard drive and iTunes library
Often, after iTunes software updates, I find that some of my music files that have been uploaded from cds are completely erased from my music library and from my external hard drive, where I keep all my music. I always make sure I turn on the external drive before opening iTunes, and I quit iTunes before turning off the external drive.
So why is my music disappearing?! Where does it go? This has been a problem for a long time and I can't find any solutions online. Please help! Thank you!When you have the unit in the dock, anytime you sync, you have to make sure that it will sync again to the folder. If it isn't set to sync the same folder where you had the music sync before, it'll delete the file.
That's just the way it's set up. So you have be conscious of it. -
Itunes music stored on external hard drive -- and itunes library empty
Hi, I recently upgraded to a new external HD (Seagate Go for Mac) and I moved my 111 GB of music media (which was stored on my old ext. HD) onto the Seagate. Only problem then was that when I tried to play a song in the iTunes library, it couldn't locate the file.
So -- after trying various combos of things, I ended-up doing a new install of iTunes. Which of course shows up empty (the iTunes library). And all my music media is still on the Seagate.
So -- is there a way to have my iTunes library recognize what is in the Seagate? So I don't have to burn that 111GB of music again?
Thank youupdate to the question above -- I went into Time Machine and restored my iTunes library, so it is showing what music I have again in there. FYI in advanced settings, I kept the setting that the music is stored in the Seagate HD.
BUT when I click on any music, it still cannot locate the file (all the music media files are still stored on the Seagate ext. HD)
So -- how can I get the iTunes library to re-connect with what is in the Seagate HD?

As I got down to Step 7 in 'Restoring your iTunes Library backup', I chose my iTunes library file and waited for everything to be restored but then nothing came up on my iTunes. My iTunes is still empty.

I have an extensive aperture library on my computer's hard drive and I want to break it up into separate smaller libraries on external hard drives. How do I take projects from one library and add them to another one?

Frank gave you the exact answer to your question.
However, I would like to ask if you are indeed asking the right question. Do you really want different libraries? The implications are that you have to "switch" libraries to see what's in the others, and so that your searches don't work across all of your pictures? If so, then you asked the right question. If not, you may be more interested in relocating your masters to multiple hard drives so your library gets smaller, instead of breaking up the library.

Wiki: Using multiple hard drives, LVM & encryption
I have lately found myself with the issue of having multiple hard drives and wanting to do LVM stuff & encryption with while retaining maximum flexibility. After scanning through wikis, manpages and forum entries I came up with a solution for myself. The only thing I don't cover with it is mounting while booting as I don't need and can't test it.
I want to share the knowledge I gained and help other people find a solution faster and so I wrote a Wiki entry (first on my user page). I would now like to hear the opinion of the community regarding the following questions:
Do you see any security risks with my solution (especially the part on storing the unencrypted keyfile on a ramdisk)?
Do you think this text is worthy for a wiki entry or should I keep it in the forums?
Do you spot any errors (typing or else)?
Would you improve this article anywhere?

You can, but I would +*strongly recommend against+* it. See +Concatenated RAID+ in the Help for Disk Utility.
There are several potential problems:
Depending on how much data is on your 1 TB drive, 750 GB may not be enough to back it up. See #1 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
To set up a +Concatenated RAID+ set, both drives will be erased.
When (not if) either drive fails, you'll lose all the data on both.
Both drives must be connected any time you do a backup or want to browse your backups.
Especially with USB, if one drive wakes from sleep, or spins up, quickly enough, but the other one doesn't, the backup may fail and/or your backups may be corrupted.
For now, it looks like my only solution is to go buy a bigger external hard drive and spend more money,,,
That's your best solution +*by far.+* Anything else is taking a large risk with your backups. -
First - I live in a tiny fishing village in Belize, so getting support here is virtually non-existent. There is no one else in my village who even uses a Mac. Recently, my hard drive in my 2012 Macbook Pro 13" went bad (said it suffered a "shock"?) and I was traveling to Cozumel, Mexico, so had it replaced there. We used an external hard drive backup to restore the data to it's last time machine backup (October of 2014). Everything was working fine, until I returned home, added some pictures, and wanted to do a fresh backup. Now, time machine will start the backup, but gets about 113,000 of 181,000 done, and it locks up. I can do nothing - everything freezes, and I have to eventually power down the computer. I even tried deleting the old backup from the external hard drive, erasing it completely, and reformatting the external hard drive using disk utility. Still locking up. It is a 5 GB external hard drive, so space shouldn't be an issue, and it was backed up to the same external hard drive previously with no issues. I'm still running Mavericks, and don't want to try to upgrade to Yosemite until I can be sure I have a backup of my old data and pictures. I am a writer, and use that to make my meager living LOL
I'm stumped. I've looked through the files endlessly but can't find anything similar to my issue. Any suggestions? I know just enough to be dangerous, and don't want to lose everything we worked so hard to retrieve when my hard drive crashed last month.
Thanks!SMH5206 - I tried letting it sit and crank overnight twice. First time I thought it was my error causing it to lock up. Now I know better. I haven't changed any of my time machine settings - and actually never used time machine regularly. Only reason I had a fresh backup from last Oct was because I did one before I upgraded to mavericks. Everything worked fine then - and we used that to restore when the hard drive crashed and was replaced. I have actually deleted hundreds of pictures off my hard drive and one entire user, so it should actually be a much smaller backup - so if it did it before on the same external hard disk, I don't understand why it won't now. I'm really confused.
Kahjot - the external hard drive is the same one I backed up to previously - and I have completely erased it and reformatted, and the information I'm backing up now is less, so there should be no reason why it doesn't have enough room now, when there is actually less information on my current hard drive (see my reply to SMH5206). When I plug it in, it says it is a 500.07 GB WD "My Passport"
I've even tried to have time machine only backup certain files, and not the whole thing. Still locking up.

Hard drive and logic board failure

we have been suffering from 4 dead hard drives and one logic board failure in 20-inch intel iMacs (~2007) recently and last month the logic board and hard drive of a 2010 27-inch iMac (just out of warranty) just died.
Are there any known issues with the iMacs that Apple fixes even outside the warranty?Frank: I have a 5 month old 27" iMac and the logic board on it just died as well as I was getting all kinds of kerner errors. I have Apple Care and although the cost to replace the product was $800 I am not going to have to pay anything. I did talk to someone else who also had a logic board go bad on him but I doubt that you will be able to get it fixed without having to fork over $$$

I cannot get my iTunes library/music from my old computer to my new one. The old computer is so messed up that I cannot even open a browser.I tried to copy to an external hard drive and the music was there until I went to upload to the new computer. I disconnected my old computer so I will have to reconnect it I am sure. thank you for any help. Last time I transferred I used a product I purchased. That was a long time ago.
First of all make sure that you've definitely backed up the movies to your external hard disc.
In iMovie click on any event you don't want, go to the file menu and select 'move event to trash'. Then do the same for any unwanted projects - 'move project to trash'. Quit out of iMovie and empty the trash.

My HP computer's hard drive crashed. I have replaced the hard drive and reinstalled all of the software. I have copied my I tunes library from my backup hard drive to the new one. How do I restore the permissions? This is the 3 rd time I have had to do this. THe share screen says you are limited to 5 ??

I opened my iPhoto library today which was stored on an external hard drive and several of my videos now will not play at all. The weird thing is that each file shows a duration of 1 second and when I open them it just shows one frame. What the !&%$#@ Where did my original video files go?
Sounds like a good plan, you can never be to safe and having a second External HD is safer than one.
The only thing that I would do different, is setup the 3T as my TimeMachine Backup and then erase and move my Photos, Videos and perhaps even iTunes Media to the 1T. That way you will have room to backup both the Internal Hard Drive and the 1T External Hard Drive to the 3T using TimeMachine.
Take your time, study and use the > Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions if you get stuck or aren't sure how to make the move.
