Multiple Headphone / Monitor Mix

Just wondering how to get multiple headphone mixes?
Running 2 (soon to be 3) daisyied FirePod's. They each have what seems to be 8 ins and 2 outs. I'd like to be able to give a separate mix for each output (like a soundboard with 4+ monitor knobs on each track). Anyone know how to do this?

Thanks for your reply, and yes, I have the output selected in the channel strip.
I acutally did get it working last night right before I called it quits, but still am having one odd issue.
I set my channel strips up to send to the coreect outputs (backing track to mains, backing track with click to monitor mix), but the click kept jumping back to the main mix.  I would set the output to monitors, but when the tracks would play the click track would suddenly play through the mains, and the drop-down output selector would read "Main"?????
I thought it was something at the Concert level, so I changed it there as well, but still no luck.
Haven't ruled out that some of this has something to do with my Mbox Pro settings, but I see nothing there that would be causing issues.
Ever heard of a output changing like that?  This happened repeatedly, I kept chaninging it to monitors, it came chaning itself back....crazy.
Thanks again for the help!

  • Multiple Headphone outs question

    Hi there,
I recently asked for a bit of help getting my home studio setup sorted and I just need a bit more advice please!
While I'm experienced in the live room of a studio, I'm still very much an amateur on the other side of the glass! Basically I'm just putting together a basic setup to track some demo's / ideas with my band. So far, I've got a Motu 8PRE interface running the drum and instrument mics into Logic and the outs from the 8PRE going to the monitors. My question is this...
How do I set up multiple headphone outputs with independent mixes so band members can have a custom mix in their headphones? I'm having a hard time figuring out how this would work and have no idea what I need to do in Logic to set it up, and also what hardware I might need.
If anyone could explain this, both how to set it up in Logic and the kind of hardware I would need that would be fantastic!
    Many thanks in advance

    1) Yes
    2) Sorry - I assumed that box had 8 outs too - I assumed wrong. You could get an additional multi-channel interface which accepts ADAT inputs as well as analog, which would give you great flexibility. MOTU makes several - better yet check out RME, Focusrite, and others. There are dozens on the market - it depends on your budget and future expansion plans.
    3) Yes, or a headphone distribution system - but again, your budget will determine this. Hear, Furman and Aviom all have systems. Or for much less, Presonus headphone amps. Depending on your physical set up, you might need a snake unless you're using an already wired recording room.
    Good luck.

  • Multiple Headphone Setup

Hi All I'm knew to Logic 9 and have not been able to find information on how to setup multiple headphones. I have an Apogee Ensemble and a Nady HA 1x4 stereo headphone amp. I'd like to send individual headphone mixes thru the ensemble and logic to the talent. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Headphone Monitoring

I need headphone monitoring at night when the family and neighbours are asleep. Is there a way to monitor the main logic output via the headphone socket on my G5.
Previously I was taking outputs 1 + 2 from my M-Audio delta 1010lt into a behringer RX-1602 rack mixer which had a great headphone circuit in it, but the RX-1602 has died (clicks loudly enough to make me thing the speaker cones will blow!).
I replaced this with a B-Tech BT928 headphone amplifier as a temporary measure - I didn't think it would need much but it needs more than that little thing, the sound is far from neutral, you do a nights work with that and it all sounds different in the morning.
Of course I could just buy another RX-1602 or something else with headphone capability but money is a bit tight at the moment and I was wondering if there was some Core Audio routing wizardry that would mean I could try out the monitoring using the G5 Mac headphone socket!

    Simon,
From within Logic, simply go to Audio Hardware and drivers (found under the main Audio menu), and switch the driver to "Built In Audio", instead of your M-Audio driver.

  • Using multiple headphones

I currently use logic 8 and a saffire pro 40 to record live music. What I want to be able to do is have 5 headphones- one to each person playing- with a different mix in each. For example, for the lead guitarist, I want his instrument louder in his headphones so he can hear clearly over the drums, without changing the volume on the recording.
I have read of a few ways of doing this, but they all seem unnecessarily complicated and I can't get them working properly in practice.
Any advice is much appreciated (pitched at a novice level)!
    Thanks

You'll need multiple independent outputs, and send an independent stereo mix to each. The way this is usually done is to use sends to busses, and set up your alternative mix by varying the send levels on each channel to each bus.
It can be quite complicated or messy if you really need total control over multiple headphone mixes, especially with complicated mix setups.
Easier still is to have independent stem mixes, rather than complete mixes (so for instance, you could have stems of drums, keyboards, bass, vox, bvox, guitars etc so you could vary the stem levels for each mix.)
In any case, you'll have to have an interface that supports 5 or more stereo outputs, and some way of connecting those line level outputs to headphones.

  • Stumped on how to create a flexible monitoring mix for a four piece band

I am recording a four piece electric jazz group "live" in the studio (my garage). I run logic 8 on a 2.4 Ghz MBP with 4 Gb of ram. I have a Presonus FP10 which gives me 8 analogue ins & outs. I also have a cheap Behringer 4 channel h/p amp HA4700.
My question is: is there a way to create a monitor mix that is from within logic that is both flexible and usable. ie close to zero latency ?
I have set up 4 buses in the mixer that I can send signal to from each of the instruments (sax, keys, bass & rum submix) and assigned these to outputs 3-6 which i then run to the aux in on each channel of the h/p amp. This has worked but i am getting some latency.....how can i fix this......can i ? It's actually not too bad, but when i can=me to using the same set up to do some overdubbing later it was un-usable.
    Any suggestions gratefully accepted!

Do you need to have 4 individual monitor mixes or can they all be the same for each player?
If you can get away with the same mix for each player, create a stereo aux track with a bus of your choice on the input and use outputs 3&4 from your interface to connect to the stereo input on your headphone pre amp.
I'm not sure why you are connecting your interface to the pre amp via an aux input? I would have thought that it should be hooked up straight into the stereo input.
Although you won't get individual monitor mixes this way, each player will have some freedom over what they are hearing via the controls on the headphone amp.

  • Firewire Interface and Monitor Mix

We'll, I've read all I can, and settled on a M-Audio Fast Track Pro for my interface. I went with the USB, but the residual latency and weak pre-amps have me looking to return it and get something different. I will mainly be using it to record guitar, bass, drums, and vocals over some loops. Here are my needs:
-One XLR and one 1/4" input. (Two 1/4" inputs would be nice, for taking stereo feed from a mixer when recording drums).
-1/4 L/R outputs to feed powered monitors
    -Headphone out (of course)
-Nice, powerful preamp. The Fast Track Pro has to be cranked to record vocals from a Beta 57a.
    ...and here's the big one.
-An ability to adjust the monitor mix between input and playback. I'm not sure how people get a good monitor mix when using an interface without this capability. I like this feature on the Fast Track Pro, but it comes with some latency. I imagine some of this can be attributed to it's USB design.
Any suggestions would be great. I know this has been beaten to death. Thank you.

    MacBook Pro 2.33   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Latency is rarely caused by use of usb. It is almost always computer side, hard drive being probably the big cause. Especially with laptop hard drives.
Also just because your 57 needs to be at 10 on the FT Pro and say 8 on another device doesn't mean the sound will be any different. But I have heard that the Fastracks don't have as much gain as other interfaces.
If your mixing playback plus dry input you shouldn't have any latency but if you are mixing playback and wet input then you could get latency.

  • Headphones for mixing

Hi, what are your favourite headphones for mixing? I know they won't replace monitors, but still I need good ones for this task. Thanks.

That's an excellent point, Tom. One of the reasons I thought the headphones were so great is because my mix sounded terrible when I first listened through the 750s! Like you said, they force you to really work on getting a great mix -- which then ends up sounding great everywhere else (the car, home stereo, etc.). When I first got them, the higher frequencies were very harsh. After leaving them playing on my home stereo for several days straight, the harshness went away, and I'm left with what I consider to be some outstanding headphones.

Brian....I just got my 750's today.
After years with Sony 7506's I thought they were broken when I put them on. They were cloudy and dark and I didn't like what I heard at all. After a bit, I took them off, and listened to the mix on my Adam monitors. The mix was....well....cloudy and dark.
These phones are about as close to what I'm actually hearing out of the monitors as I've heard. After working all day today with them, it's the first pair of phones that when A/B with the monitors I don't feel like I've been buried in a treble booster all day. Very cool. The monitors were more revealing yes, but the overall sound and balance was what was in the phones. These are definitely keepers. They are not "hi hype" phones at all, rather flat and make you work at the mix. Pretty darned cool.

    Try here:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
You said you restored the iPod. Was the restore successful, that is, it went though all the steps without errors?
Try a restore to factory settings/new iPod if yuhave not doe so so far.
Are you  using the headphones that came with the iPod? Are you inserting the plug fully
Have you tried another set of headphones in the iPod?
The speaker is not that loud.

  • Cue mix vs monitor mix

How do I create a separate cue mix vs a monitor mix in GB? I aggregated my Duet with the built-in output, so I ought to have 4 output channels to choose from for each track. I'd like to be able to remove the vox from output 3/4 (cue mix) while playing them in output 1/2 (monitor mix). But I don't see anyplace in a GB track to assign output channels. Does GB just spam all tracks to all output channels?

Logic reads GB files, but not the other way round. So you would have to export your midi tracks as a midi file and the audio tracks as single audio files and puzzle everything back together in GB.
However, if you have mastered Logic to an extent that you can record, play midi instruments and even assign different output mixes, I don't see a reason to go back to GB for mixing and mastering. There's nothing GB can do that you can't do (or even do better) in Logic.

Had you brought the same pair of headphones to the Apple Store with you and they worked there?  If you hadn't, the wire or plug on those headphones may have failed.  Try a different pair if you can and see if those work.
    Hope this helps

I just purchased Apogee Duet 2 and am using it with Garageband 11. I am getting iTunes playbacks through the headphone monitors as per quick startup directions. When I open Garageband I get the same identical stack of guitar and on pedal displayed.  I get no sound from the guitar.   I believe I have the set up exactly as per diagram and cannot figure things out.  I am relatively green at this - my best intentioned purchase now feels like a nightmare!!  Help!!

Yes, you can upgrade to Snow Leopard:

  • Using multiple headphones with apple tv and projector?

    Hi,
I own a Barbers where we have an apple tv set up with a projector (through HDMI). It would probably be a good point to say this is attached to the ceiling
As we're trying to take things to the next level, i was wanting to provide over-ear headphones on the waiting area for people to listen to whatever is playing on the screen.
Currently, i have tried a 20m long audio jack (connected to the projector and a headphone splitter) which dulls the sound dramatically to the point of it being unlistenable. I have heard of splitters with amplifiers to boost the sound but i was wondering if there was another way?
As apple TV uses airplay i have tried to research into this with little to no luck. As we are a fairly new business i'm trying to keep costs low.
The guy from apple advised to buy sonos PLAY1 and said that these work with air play (which wasn't true so i had to send this back, later finding that only the sonos bar works with airplay)
I like to think of myself as fairly tech savvy but this is starting to get out of my league. Is there any fairly simple solution to achieve multiple headphones that'll recieve the same sound without loosing too much volume?
    Rob

    Hi,
That's because the ATV only allows one iTunes library to sync with it, you can however stream up to 5 computers

  • Audio Interface for monitoring, mixing 5.1 St Surround in FCP and Sd Tr Pro

I'm a fairly newbie with FCP and Sound Track Pro, and I am doing mostly long form, live event HDV recordings and editing. I'm about to start doing 5.1 Stereo Surround shooting and burning to Blu Ray. What do you recommend for an audio interface for my G4 PowerBook running Leopard w/2GB ram, to monitor/mix my 5.1 audio tracks in Sound Track Pro (since I can't monitor 5.1 in FCP?) I will likely be recording the tracks on the new Sound Devices 788T and inporting them into FCP and/or STP via firewire, but I need to monitor my mix before I burn to Blu Ray discs using Toast 10 and my LaCie BR burner.
Also has anyone found a way to use Bose 5.1 monitor speaker system? It would work fine for the BR player, but what about using with the Mac G4 PowerBook - do I need a digital audio - audio interface?

You'll need an audio-interface with at least 6 outputs. They should be connected to a surround processor or AV-Receiver with multichannel inputs. In line with your budget you could use M-Audio, Focusrite or Apogee products for that, they work with STP & Protools.
When monitoring, you cannot use the Bose system, because S/Pdif is for encoded audio only.
