Multiple iMac(s) - iMac (4)

My iMac seems to have several versions residing on it.  For example, under my system preferences > Sharing, it says "iMac (4)" in the "Computer Name" field.  File Sharing is "on" and beneath that it says the following: "Other users can access shared folders on this computer, and administrators all volumes, at afp://imac-2/ or "iMac(4)". "
In the Finder window, under Devices, I have the iMac(4) at the top.
My question is two-fold: (1) how do I rid myself of these additional numbered computer names, and (2) have I inadvertently quadruple copies of the contents of my iMac on the hard drive?
Many thanks in advance,
Trjeff

Yes, my first hard drive died, so I replaced it and reloaded from time machine, and it did create a new iMac(1), along with new user profile with a "1" after it.  I ignored it because it wasn't a big deal, but I received a time capsule for christmas, and was setting it up trying to establish a new wireless network and somehow it created a iMac(2).  When I tried to delete the (2) in the computer name field of the System Preferences > Sharing, it then told me that the iMac(2) was in use, and then created an iMac(3), then I tried it again, and it created an iMac(4), so I left it at that point.  I have since gone back and and edited it again, following CaptFred's advice, and it has not (so far) repeated itself to create an iMac(5).
This experience has taught me that I am clearly lost when setting up the network, but my configuration does not seem that unusual, and is even contemplated in the Airport Setup Manual, but for some reason is causing me fits.  That's for a different thread, though.
Many thanks to you both for the quick response.

Your Mac is definitely one of the supported models? http://www.apple.com/uk/osx/specs/
If so, what happens when you try to download? Is it a case of nothing happens? If so, take a look at the suggestions under 'Stalled Download' in this link:

Also, some usrs have found that logging out of the Mac App Store and then back in again and starting over has kick-started the download. It seems that the 5+gb download can take a long time to give any feedback as to what's happening.

Sometimes this message means that you have two simultaneous connections to the same local network: probably Ethernet and Wi-Fi. If applicable, disconnect the Ethernet cable or turn off Wi-Fi.
Sometimes it happens because a device that gets its network address from the router wakes from sleep, and the address it was using before has been assigned to another device.
A third-party wireless router that has incompatible settings or firmware may be the cause. In that case, refer to the manufacturer or ISP for support. Restarting the router may help, temporarily.
Rename the computer in the Sharing preference pane.

Is there a setting on the iphone that will allow ical entries on the iphone to sink to my other computers
    Thank-you

    Welcome to the Apple community.
First check that all your settings are correct, that calendar syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the calendars you are using are in your 'iCloud' account and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud account (you can do this by clicking/tapping the calendar button in the top left corner of the application ), non iCloud calendars will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your calendars are in the iCloud account, you might try unchecking calendar syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling calendar syncing settings.

  • Multiple users on imac

I have a new iMac and I'm thinking through user accounts.  I don't want to have separate user accounts if I can avoid it, and I'd rather not have separate iTunes accounts either.  But if we have one big iTunes account, can we designate different apps to go on our different devices?  I will have two iPhones and one iPad working through the same account.  But my daughter and I will have different music and different apps on our phones.  I've never tried to use one iTunes account for multiple users before so I'm not sure if that's even possible! Thoughts...?

You can auto sync whatever you select to each device.
Only way is to manually sync

  • Access Canon MX860 from multiple accounts on iMac over WiFi

I bought a Canon PIXMA MX860 yesterday and set it up using my account on our iMac running 10.5.6. The printer is connected over WiFi. I can print and scan from my account.
When I try to print from another account on the iMac (my wife as an account and we have a guest account) the printer queue says "Printer is currently off-line". I sent a message to Canon, they told me to set permissions for "Everyone" to Read & Write on the Library folder. I tried this for:
    /Macintosh HD/Library/Printers/Canon
and all enclosed items. Still doesn't work.
Has anyone else set up the MX860 to print from multiple accounts on a computer? Did you have to do anything beyond the procedure specified by Canon?
    Thanks!
    Matt

    Hello Matt,
I don't understand why Canon support would have got you to change permissions on the Canon folder. This is not normally required.
I have the MP980 connected via wireless, and I can print to it from my Admin account and a standard account I made up just to check. What account type do you have set for the missus?
I also would have thought that the printer off-line message would have had more to do with her account not being able to access the network connection, rather than not being able to access the core Printers folder.
If using her account, you open the Print Queue and select the Utility icon, and then set the Canon IJ Printer Utility to network, does the MX860 display? And if you select it, can you peform any of the Maintenance functions?
Also, if you connect the MX860 directly to the Mac via USB, are you able to print to it using her account?

  • Can multiple users on iMac running Yosemite access features, i.e., iPhone calls, using individual apple id's?

We have a iMac that is used by 3 different people, each with a separate log-in. Under Yosemite, can the individual users access the new features of Yosemite, i.e., iPhone access,  using their individual Apple ID's?
If yes, how? What does the sytem administrator need to do to give each user access to the features when they log-in?
If not, then what the heck, Apple?

Thanks for your response. I want to make sure I understand this . When installing Yosemite, it requires the apple id.  This would be the apple ID of the admin doing the install. If admin enters their Apple ID, then the functions related to their Apple ID will be the default. User B logs in. What  does he do to  set up his Apple ID to synch functions between his iPhone and the OS? I understand that if he has admin privileges, based on his account profile, his settings should not override the previous admin set up because they are separate accounts, so it is just how the other two users activate the new Yosemite features that I'm unsure about. Will this work for all new features including iCloud drive?

  • Multiple problems w/ iMac

    Hi,
Today I had a big problem with my iMac. I already had Bootcamp installed, with XP SP2, and I wanted to install a new expansion of a game, The Sims 2. I did it, and started playing. 10 minutes later, the screen went black and all peripherals went off. The computer rebooted.
I booted again into Windows, and, when I got to the Desktop, the screen went black again. But, this time, it didn't reboot. I had to do it manually (pressing the power button for 3 seconds, and then pressing it again).
It powered up, but kept the white LED on, the SuperDrive working, and did not chime. I thought the culprit was the Sims 2 CD which was on the drive, so I spent almoust the whole afternoon figuring out how would I remove it from the drive. I tried everything: mouse button pressed, long periods with the plug out, the eject key, even a PRAM reset. Nothing!
I left it there, without any power, for some time. Then I reconnected the plug and it did boot. I ejected the CD via OS X, and it worked. But then, not even 2 minutes later, it went back to that black screen. And it started again...
Now, I can make it boot for some time, if I disconnect the iMac from the power outlet for a few minutes. But it keeps going back to the black screen, which I assume to be a kernel panic.
Should I send it to Apple? Its warranty is still valid, but the service here in Portugal is awful... (we don't have the official Apple here, only a 3rd-party company...)
I'm sorry for the long explanation, but I felt I needed to write everything for you to know the extension of the problem...

What you describe is not a normal kernel panic. I think that your problem has to do with a RAM issue; poorly seated RAM or bad RAM. Have you installed any 3rd party RAM or do you just have the Apple RAM that came with your Mac? I would remove the modules and reseat them. If that does not clear up the issue, if you have 3rd party RAM try the Mac with just the Apple RAM installed.

  • Multiple Users, 1 iMac, 1 iPhone

Is there a tutorial which explains how OS X handles multiple users/accounts on the same physical machine with regard in particular to iPhoto, AddressBook, iTunes, other "built-in" apps?
Now that my wife has an iPhone, it seems her user account has "taken over".
Mobile Me has not made it any easier. Does Sync work on a user by user basis, or on an overall-machine approach?
    Any help/direction appreciated.

Every account has it's own space, so to speak.
Look in the MacHD/Users folder - you will see a subfolder for each user on the machine.
Each users folder contains folders for documents, prefs, libraries, mail files, internet favorites, browser extensions, etc. They are entirely self contained; users folders do not 'combine'
Other users cannot access any other users sub folders in
    /users/username/~
Each user can elect to share (or not) all or part of their respective iphoto and itunes libraries to other local users.
Documents that a user wants to make available (as read only) to other users on the machine can be placed in MacHD/Users/Shared.
Now, if for some reason, your wife logs in under your account id, then connects/syncs her iphone, it will cause issues, especially when she logs back in under her account and connects and syncs the phone.

  • Multiple yosemite problems (iMac late 2009 2.8 i7, 12g ram)

Installed yosemite, lots of strange issues, including:
    - video's won't play (Facebook, iPhone, iTunes) - i get sound, but no moving pictures. youtube movies play fine, until i try to make them fullscreen.
    - hotcorners randomly result in a 'switch users' login screen. login screen refreshes the background slowly.
    - generally speaking runs slow as a dog
    Two questions:
    1) is there anything i can do to ameliorate the above issues?  if not
    2) how can i go back to mavericks, where i had zero issues?
    Thanks folks!

Update - not sure why this would be - but 3 restarts later, the machine actually is running quite well.

  • Full Firewire Port Failure (three different machines : iMac Intel, iMac G5, Black Macbook)

I'm experiencing a failure of all FireWire ports on all of my three machines. I believe this problem began with a faulty external, FireWire powered hard drive from G-Tech. Here are all my specs, followed by a rundown of the order of events that has lead to this situation, followed by the various troubleshooting I have done.
    Equipment :
    iMac Aluminum Intel - 24" Mid 2007 - running OsX 10.5.8 - currently 1 FW400 and 1 FW800 ports disabled
    iMac G5 - 20" - running OsX 10.5.8 - currently 2 FW400 ports disabled
    MacBook - 13" black Early 2008 - running OsX 10.5.8 - currently 1 FW400 port disabled
    2 500GB G-Drives (by G-Tech) - AC powered
    1 5TB G-RAID Drive (by G-Tech) - AC powered
    1 250GB G-Drive Mini (by G-Tech) - FW powered
    Initial Setup :
1 500GB G-Drive connected directly to iMac Intel via FW800
    1 500GB G-Drive connected to first 500GB G-Drive via FW800 (daisy chained)
    1 250GB G-Drive connected to second 500GB G-Drive via FW400 (daisy chained)
1 5TB G-RAID connected directly to iMac Intel via FW800>400 adapter
    Sequence of Events :
I had transferred some files to my G-Drive Mini in order to move them to my MacBook from my iMac Intel. I copied the files to the G-Drive Mini and ejected it normally and plugged it into my MacBook via FW400. The drive would not mount, and the power indication light would not go on. After experimenting with various connections and cables I was able to get the drive to power with FW400 and USB connected at the same time, but the drive would still not mount.
I then plugged the G-Drive Mini back into the 2nd 500GB G-Drive as it was previously connected via FW400. This action caused the G-Drive to immediately reboot and eject itself from my iMac Intel.
I then attempted to plug the G-Drive Mini into my older iMac G5 via FW400. Immediately upon plugging in, the computer shut down, and would not restart.
At this point I kind of started to freak out. I was unaware of the extent of the damage, but was upset that the FW powered G-Drive Mini had shutdown my iMac G5. I contacted G-Tech Support and they offered to replace the drive and instructed me how to manually reset the computer's SMC by opening up the iMac and finding the Cuda switch. This worked and the computer was able to start and function again, but the FW400 port seemed to be disabled.
I then tried to swap out configurations and drives on my iMac Intel to see if there was any cable problems, but doing so, slowly rendered all my FireWire ports useless. It's almost as if the act of plugging in the FW-powered G-Drive Mini started a kind of shortout chain reaction. I soon learned that none of my hard drives would connect to any of my three machines, with any kind of cable combination via FW400 or 800.
I am currently able to connect my 5TB G-RAID drive to any machine via USB, as well as my G-Drive Mini. I am unable to access the other two external hard drives, as one has only FW400 and 800 ports and the other's USB connection is not functional as well on any machine.
    Troubleshooting Steps Taken :
I have on all machines, reset the SMC in the following methods. iMac G5 - manually, by opening the case and pressing Cuda switch. iMac Intel - unplug, hold power button, restart method. MacBook - unplug, hold power button, restart method.
I have also on all machines, reset the PRAM by the Cmnd + Opt + P + R method at startup.
I have also unplugged all cables / removed battery, from all machines and left alone for a period of at least 12 hours, then re-plugged in each device one at a time.
I have also restored my hibernate mode (through Terminal) on my iMac Intel to mode 3 and also turned on Virtual Memory in system preferences and set hibernatemode to mode 7, the restarted and attempted to plug in devices. The reason I even began to deal with the hibernate mode was because I had around the same time my ports began malfunctioning, installed the DeepSleep widget, which allows you to control your computer's hibernate mode. I thought that tweaking with this setting may have made my computer incapable of recognizing devices that were plugged in. I have since uninstalled the widget and experimented with different hibernatemodes to no avail.
I also have Repaired Disk Permissions and Repaired Disk on all my machines, from within my Admin User as well as from the OsX Install Disk.
Sometimes in my System Profiler (like right now for example on my iMac Intel) my computer is "Unable to list FireWire devices," but sometimes, no warning message comes up and it simply displays the appropriate Bus speed.
I also conducted a system restore using a backup from my 5TB G-Raid Drive via USB, to a date before these problems started, but my ports are still not working.
    Summary :
I am looking at a situation where all my FW ports on all my computers appear to be disabled, and possibly also on my four external hard drives, with one possible USB port malfunction on one external drive. The only root of this seems to be a malfunctioning FW-powered external hard drive.
Is this possible? Has this happened to anyone else before? G-Tech assures me that it is impossible for my 250GB G-Drive Mini to draw enough power from a computer to permanently disable any ports, but I have tried all of the FW port problem troubleshooting steps and am at a loss.
I do not have AppleCare and would like to avoid bringing two iMacs, a MacBook and four hard drives to the Apple store and take my chances with the geniuses.
I would appreciate any help or advice you all have. Thanks for reading and for your support!

Ok. So if that was too confusing, I've re-labeled this post with letters for my hard drives and some mapping of the connectivity configurations I have attempted.

  • Cannot Wi-Fi Sync iPad; Appears to see iMac but iMac does not see the iPad

Like many, I have upgraded my iPad (1st Gen) to iOS 5 and for the most part, it's been an easy transistion to learn the new features. However, I've not been able to overcome a Wi-Fi Sync issue.
The iPad does recognize that it can Wi-Fi Sync with my iMac.
When it was connected via cable, I had already selected the "Sync with this [iOS device] over Wi-Fi" Option in iTunes then clicked "Apply."
Under Settings > General > iTunes Sync on my iPad, the "Sync Now" button is grey when I connect to an alternate Wi-Fi network in our house, but when I am on the same Wi-Fi network as my computer, through an Apple Airport Extreme Basestation, the "Sync Now" button becomes actively black as it if recognizes my iMac, but it does not show up under iTunes to sync.
I connected the iPad to an alternate computer which is linked to iPhone running iOS 5 on the alternate Wi-Fi Network I spoke of earlier and through which we succesfully Wi-Fi Synced, but when my iPad was linked to this same computer (connected first by cable to enable "Sync with this [iOS device] over Wi-Fi" Option in iTunes first, it still would not show my iPad. And this time, not even my iPad would see the computer when on the same network, yet I could also see the iPhone mentioned which was upstairs.
I have tried following the steps in this Help Page (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4062) but without any change. The only thing I haven't followed to the letter is restarting my router. I did tell my Airport Basestation to restart via the Airport Utility.
Has anyone else yet experienced this issue and been able to resolve it? Please share any insight.

When one device can't see another via Bonjour, it suggests a problem with how the network or the devices are handling "multicast" packets. Handling multicasts is tricky on Wi-Fi. Is there any way you can temporarily plug the iMac into the LAN port of the base station via an Ethernet cable, and try the sync that way? If that works, then it's a clear indication of multicast problems on your network.
Apple is usually very good about making sure multicasts work reliably on AirPort base stations and all Macs and iOS client devices. It would be interesting to know which generation of AirPort Extreme you have, what firmware version you're running on it, exactly which wireless security mode you're using (for instance, WPA2 "mixed mode", where both WPA2-style AES-CCMP and original WPA-style TKIP encryption are available, is trickier for multicasts because multicasts have to use a different cipher and key. "WEP TSN" is also tricky for similar reasons). Oh, and what you have your "multicast rate" set to on your base station.

  • IMac will not boot up. Need to transfer data iMac (2006) iMac (2009)

    I have an iMac (built/sold late 2006 -400  Firewire) and an iMac (built/sold late 2009 - 800 Firewire).
I have connected computers with a 400 to 800 Firewire cable.
The old iMac will not boot to desktop. It was suggested to hold down the "T" key and then power up the iMac. This was done and the old iMac shows a "Y" shaped icon that appears to be a Firewire icon. The old iMac does not show up on the desktop of the new iMac.
I would like to transfer data from the old iMac to the newer one. Suggestions ?
    Thanks.
    old iMac OS 10.4.xx
    new iMac OS 10.9.2

She's holding T down on the old computer.
Which is the way it has to be done. The old computer's hard drive will mount on the new computer.
To use FireWire target disk mode
Make sure that the target computer is turned off.
If you are using an Apple portable computer such as a PowerBook or MacBook as the target computer, plug in its AC power adapter.
Use a FireWire cable to connect the target computer to a host computer. The host computer can be powered on.
Start up the target computer and immediately press and hold down the T key until the FireWire icon appears. The hard disk of the target computer should become available to the host computer and will likely appear on desktop. (If the target computer is running Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger, you can also open System Preferences, choose Startup Disk, and click Target Disk Mode. Restart the computer and it will start up in Target Disk Mode.)
When you are finished copying files, locate the target computer's hard disk icon on the desktop of the host computer and drag it to the Trash or choose Eject (or Put Away) from the File menu.
Press the target computer's power button to turn it off.
    Unplug the FireWire cable.
