Multiple images with same filename-how does aperture deal?
I recently lost a several pictures from iphoto on my imac running snow leopard. I have tried multiple things with the guidance of a senior advisor from apple, but the pictures are not retrievable. I have multiple backups for many, but I lost about 20 images. Naturally, I am a bit paranoid now about the stability of the remaining photos in my 66gb library, so have made multiple backups of the entire library and plan to migrate to aperture 3 with a vault.
It just struck me though, that because we use multiple cameras with the same canon file naming scheme, I have several instances where I have multiple photos with the same filename. Is this potentially a problem, or because the EXIF info is different for each one, am I okay? If this is a problem, do any of you have any remedies? I plan on adjusting the naming scheme on our cameras for the future.

The same filename isn't an issue, and no, it won't consider them duplicates, unless you try importing them into the same project.

Thanks in advance!To add to Terence's reply: the only time you might run into a problem is when you might try exporting photos with the same file name to the same folder on the HD. If that were they case you could batch rename the photo's titles with Photos->Batch Change->Titles to Text with the option to add a sequential number at the end of the file name, i.e. Text - 001.jpg, etc.
Another alternative would be to upload each new shoot to a folder on the desktop and rename them with a renaming app likeName Mangler or Renamer4Mac . I rename them with the date taken and a brief description: 2009-05-10-MomsDayBalboaPark-001.JPG. You also could add an identifier to the description to tell which camera it came from.
This method will avoid any name conflict down the line and make it easy to identify photos as to their general content when used outside of iPhoto. I've found that a little extra effort up front has saved me a lot of problems on down the line. -
Bridge CS4 won't output to pdf multiple images with same filename
Hiya...my googling efforts have thus far failed!
I've got CS4, and in Bridge, I created a New Smart Collection to find all filenames in a folder containing "." or ".jpg" - which in turn searched through all the subfolders like what you used to be able to do in Photoshop CS3. Very simple stuff, but all the images are jpg's, but in multiple folders (I don't want to move them out of the folders, as the files came from an external source, and there are heaps of folders, and I don't want to pdf each subfolder seperately as it will take forever).
The problem is that some of the files have the same filenames (again I'd prefer not to rename, as it happens a lot on this project, and they are all over the place). So whilst Bridge will show the thumbnail images correctly in the content tabbed screen in my New Smart Collection, but once I've done the Output to PDF thing, for example, instead of showing both different images it has pdf only the first image but repeated it twice. And this happens multiple times throughout the pdf, the more times the same filename is used, the more times the first image gets repeated.
I know that it is messy to have multiple similar filenames, but why can't bridge just place the image anyway? It allocated a space for it on the pdf and does show it in bridge, it just doesn't seem to survive the transfer to pdf well.
The only other thing that I have done is use the below link (which was posted on another adobe forum thread) to create a custom pdf output template (nothing too fancy, just number of rows / columns, size, font etc). But I've tried using the standard bridge templates and it does the same thing.

UPDATE 16/11/09
Just to let you know that I seem to have resolved the bug inadvertently with one of the Adobe updates. The below is the link for the AdobeOutputModule-2.1-mul-AdobeUpdate.zip which was released on 2/19/2009 - which allows for headers & footers to be placed in the Ouput pdf. I finally installed it today, and everything seems to be working fine now (i.e. I can pdf multiple images with the same filenames and the pdf will actually show each different image rather than repeating only 1 of the images).
Must have been a fix installed in the contact sheet templates that get installed with the update - not sure why the original version was corrupted, but I've left that with the Adobe guys (I submitted a bug report - and they were able to replicate the problem but hadn't fixed it as yet).

Multiple images with same filename
I have a very large library of images on DVD and I want to make a database of the entire library in Lightroom. I do not rename my images from my camera so it's not uncommon for me to have multiple images on different discs with the same filename. I'm finding when I try to import these images into lightroom they write over the existing images that share the filename. Is there a way to work around this? I assumed the different EXIF data would be enough for the program to realize that it was dealing with two different images, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
In a possibly related issue, I've found some images that have the wrong filename in lightroom (different from the filename on the original disc). What's up with that?
I've been working for weeks trying to create this database. It's huge already and I've barely scratched the surface of my entire collection. Currently I'm over 22,000 images and I suspect I'll be over 300,000 when all is said and done. I need to resolve this or all those hours of work will have been for naught. Help!

Recently my library prompted me to rebuild due to inconsistencies that were found in library. Now alerts pop up that say it can't locate the original of an image, so I have an option to cancel or locate it. I can locate the file, however, there are usually 2 or 3 photos with the same file name! Not sure which one it is trying to locate etc. I have a feeling this is the problem. Not sure how it happened. Has anyone had this happen to them?? iPhoto library hasn't rebuilt because there are so many pop up alerts...I have a feeling it's a big problem. I am going to attempt to select one image for each one and see what happens, but I am concerned what the outcome will be.
My camera cards are already deleted (I knew I should have kept them!!). We do have time capsule, so I am assuming I can go back, but I am worried that iphoto will do the same thing. It just started doing it about two weeks ago and it didn't correspond with any photo uploads. I hope someone can help!Are you running a managed or referenced library?
If it's a managed library apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Migrating multiple domains with same name - how? Rename? Migrate through temporary domain?
Hi,
we have acquired another company, and they have multiple, separate domains with the same name (every site has a domain with NetBIOS name "COMPANY" and DNS name "company.local"). Now we want to migrate all these domains into ours using
ADMT.
Unfortunately, we did not manage to migrate one of these domains completely, so the trust must remain established for some time. But we have to continue with the second domain - which normally would require a trust, but of course we can't establish a trust
to two domains with the same name at the same time.
I found two potential solutions for the dilemma, but I'm not sure if both are reasonable:
1) Rename the domain with RENDOM.EXE to COMPANY2 and company2.local and then migrate with ADMT
2) Migrate COMPANY to a temporary domain such as COMPANYTEMP and then migrate from COMPANYTEMP to our domain
Given that there are roughly 100 users, 2 domain controllers and 8 other servers, what would be the better approach? Is option 2 possible at all, so would I be able to use the sidHistory attribute migrated from the original COMPANY domain in our domain at
all?
There is also an Exchange 2007 server, which seems to make option 1 impossible unless we find another way to migrate it (like, export all mailboxes to PST before migration) ...Ok, that's what I expected. Still, I have servers in the old domain, so if I do these steps:
first create a new temporary domain i.e COMPANYTEMP and
create trust between COMPANYTEMP -
COMPANY(Right)
then do the migration with sidHistory from COMPANY(right) --> COMPANYTEMP ,
disconnect the domain COMPANY(right) ,

And to minimize user impact, all this would have to be done in one go (over night), which is hardly possible ......................... -
Cropping multiple images with same ratio
I'm photographing an old scrapbook that has over 200 pages. I used the "do not constrain" to crop the first page. Now I want that same aspect ration for the rest of the pages.The pages are going to be printed at13.5 x 9.00 inches so I put this value into the custom crop HUD but the crop ratio it gave was incorrect.
However, It seems simpler to crop them all at the same ratio and then put the image size in at export, a process I'm familiar with. Help would be much appreciated. Thanks, jpThe Crop HUD, afaict, allows only integers in the Width and Height fields*. To convert 13.5 to an integer I needed to multiply by 2. To keep the aspect ratio the same, any arithmetic operation on one parameter must be applied to the other, so I multiplied 9 by 2. Thus, 27 x 18.
There are many ways to express the same ratio. I could have corrected for the incorrect parsing of the decimal by multiplying _both_ height and width by 10, and used 135 x 90. (13.5 x 9), (27 x 18), and (135 x 90) all represent the exact same aspect ratio. The simple way to express it is 3 x 2.
*This makes sense mathmatically (to me, a lapsed abstract tinkerer), but assumes, wrongly, that all users are sensible mathmeticians. The interface should be refined enough to either accept decimal input in those fields or refuse it. Currently, it accepts decimal input, but misreads it. You might send Apple a note and ask them to fix this: "Aperture➞Provide Aperture Feedback". -

So, delete the one from the unwanted location.
When you move data across volumes by default it is copied to the new location, afterwards you delete it from the previous location. It's a sensible protection against dataloss of anything goes wrong with the copy. -
Editing MULTIPLE images with lightroom 2 corrections in CS3
Does anyone know how to send multiple images with LR2 corrections to CS3
for further editing? If I select multiple images in LR2 and click photo/edit in/photoshop cs3 only one image opens in photoshop. If I could send more than one image at a time it would greatly speed up my workflow.
ThanksIt works for me when I highlight multiple images, right-click on one of them, choose edit in Photoshop. If this isn't working for you, is it possible that your Photoshop screen mode is such that you have to switch images using the Window option on the menu?

How does one deal with transparency in a placed file in InDesign?
I suppose this may seem elementary, but I'm relatively new to it so here goes:
First off, my print shop says that placed images should be in EPS format. I'm creating my files in Illustrator and some of them use a gradient mask to fade an object away. When saved as an EPS, the gradient mask shows as a white box instead of fading into the background. When I copy/paste my Illustrator image into a new Photoshop file, save it as a PSD, bring that PSD into Illustrator and save it as an EPS, the whole file is in a white box.
Example. I want those aisle markers to not be in white boxes.

What format are you delivering to the Printer? If it's anything other than PDF (and that's at their request) all the more reason to reread the first sentence. Why on earth are you moving things from Illustrator to Photoshop and back to Illustrator? Either one of those will save as .eps (ugh), though you need to use a clipping path for transparent areas coming out of photoshop (don't really know how Illy handles it when you say to save .eps with transparent background), but you are FAR better off with either native .AI or .PSD, both of which support transparencey, unlike .eps.If yo are delivering PDF, as you should be, it makes no difference to the printer what format the placed content uses (and it shouldn't matter to him even with native files unless he's hopelessly stuck in the 90s).
In any event, when importing from Illustrator, make sure to show the import options and check the transparent background box. -

So after I created the EAR file and successfully deployed the modules on our XI server, I got the following file adapter error, when I was trying to use it:

Check your EAR if there are any libs from the adapter framework and delete them if necessary.
After deployment check in your visual administrator if your EAR is available.

Multiple accounts with same email can't acces original account
ok, so i created a new skype. I was messing with skype account on my desktop and wound up unlinking and re linking the account basically i made 2 extra accounts and they have my live: random.namehere_1 and live: random.namehere_2 and i cant log into my original one anymore also when i try to do a recovery it says i have 2-3 skype accounts on my email and i cant log into my accounts by typing in the live:random.namehere and the password it just says ooops something went wrong basicallly saying the pw and account name are wrong when they arent i made sure of it. so how do i eliminate the cloned accounts and log into the main one.
Actually this morning I was able to log on the account from an iPad with no fuss but the pc refuses to sign in^^^!???! "Skype couldn't connect" - What is going on???
I also found out that I could sign in via a browser but not via skype program... So I uninstalled it and installed it again and it's working now...
I have now changed the email so I don't have 3 accounts with the same primary email as Skype seems to not being able to handle multiple accounts with same email!!!
