Multiple input device recording/mixing help in Audition 5.5

I'm presently evaluating Audition 5.5 and haven't been able to find any information pertaining to what others MUST do everyday.
I'd like to use Audition to record simultaneous tracks from different sources (microphones).  I'm using several USB sound card dongles (each with a single 3.5mm stereo microphone input and headphone/speaker output) as quick and convenient method of creating an array of microphone inputs.  Each dongle appears as a discrete audio device with a corresponding input and output.
Fine so far.
Where I'm struggling is in trying to map each microphone to discrete mixer channel.  I choose Edit->Preferences->Audio Channel Mapping, but it seems that only channels from any one particular sound device may be mapped to mixer channels at any time.  If I assign the microphone from sound card A to Track 1, I can't assing the microphone from sound card B to Track 2.  When I try, it alters the hardware device selection and negates any prior channels I've mapped that aren't part of the same device.  I hope I've explained the situation clearly.
I'd like to map the microphone from sound device (dongle) A to Track 1, the microphone from device B to Track 2, C to 3 and so forth.  But I cant' seem to figure out how to make Audition simultaneously recognize more than any one sound device at any particular time.
Is there a way to do what I'm trying to achieve?  Does Audition not support simultaneous mixing/recording from multiple hardware devices?  If not, do other products exist that DO support the configuration I'm trying to create which I can use as a front-end - to later mix-down in Audition?
I'd greatly appreciate any helpful insight, guidance, suggestions or recommendations.
Thanks!

I'm not having any SYNC problems that I'm aware of...
Of course you're not - that's because the system prevents you having them by limiting the physical sources you can use!
Here is a brief explanation of the sync problem - I hope it makes sense:
When an input device digitises a signal, it has to provide a clock source for its A-D device. Normally this clock is locally derived, and the device outputs a digital stream at that rate. But if you have two devices (let's say that they were two external USB ones) both trying to be the input device, then their clocks won't be synchronised - inevitably. Audition, and all other software come to that, can only record at one rate, and if another device provides an input that isn't exactly at the same rate and phase as the one providing the master clock, then fairly soon, you get to a point where the data being inputted won't coincide with the main clock any more, and a bloody great click occurs. On older systems where you could use multiple devices, some allowed for the clock sources to be externally synchronised, and a lot of pro gear still does - it helps a lot when you are using digital mixers and external digital preamps if you can feed everything from a master clock, rather than daisy-chaining it.
When it comes to ASIO, Steinberg made the relatively easy decision not even to try to implement it for multiple devices. Instead, they suggest that you use a single device which is capable of supporting as many inputs as your PC can manage. As an example of how this works, my MOTU device that I mentioned above has eight analogue inputs, and also an 8-channel ADAT input. So, without too much trouble I can connect an external 8-channel digital preamp to it and have 16 inputs in total. It uses an optical connection for the ADAT, but to use it I either have to provide sync from the MOTU to the preamp, or use the preamp as the sync source for both itself and the MOTU, replacing the internal clock. With the only digital preamp I have it's this latter option that makes sense, as there isn't an easy way to get sync from the MOTU back to the preamp. (I should perhaps explain that the preamp has got a sync input, but the only sync output from the MOTU comes from its ADAT output, and that isn't easy to feed back in).
Yes, until you get used to it the concept of syncing devices takes a bit of getting used to - Steinberg's idea was to keep it as simple as possible, even though on the face of it, it's rather frustrating.

I am wondering if multiple input devices can be used simultaneously... i.e. as in a 2 person NES emulator. I guess thats its... simple question. My guess is no, but I thought I'd ask

Read the manual or search this forum...
A channel strip listens to exactly ONE keyboard object. Not to a MIDI keyboard, but an object in the workspace.
In the layout mode you can configure a keyboard object to only listen to certain MIDI events. Usually only they events that come from a specific MIDI keyboard (MIDI port and MIDI channel match). You can however e.g. ignore the channel or port for a keyboard object. Then this object might listen to multiple MIDI keyboards.
This is the trick used for the EVB3: one keyboard object that receives MIDI events from several MIDI keyboards.
Your EXS24 is listen to several keyboards, because you selected the EVB3 keyboard object as its input.
I hope this clarifies the "magic" behind the difference of a MIDI keyboard and a keyboard object.
BTW: There is one exception: if you have no keyboard in the workspace at all, the channel strip will still work: they listen to everything. Its like having a keyboard object with MIDI port and channel set to all/all.

  • How do I setup Multiple Inputs on a single card into multiple tracks (devices) in Adobe Audition?

With a single Audigy 2 Card, how do I setup to record from two of the inputs (line-in and mic) into separate tracks in Adobe Audition 1.5?
I am trying to get the different inputs to list as different devices in Adobe Audition 1.5 so that I can record to multiple tracks simultaneously with different input.
    Is it possible?
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thank you

I need to know the same thing when using an Audigy2 ZS Platinum Pro. Neither the users manual nor the website provide anything more technical than how to hook up speakers wires.
If you cannot multitrack from the multiple inputs, is the IEE 1394 (firewire) port capable of 6 pin connection to a Yamaha digital mixer with an MLan digital I/O card. If so, will the 16in/16out from the MLan pass through and be recognized by Adobe Audition?
    Thanks

  • How do I select a midi input device and record midi?

I have several midi input devices connected to my computer. I use them regularly with Digital Performer. I am trying to record a single midi track in Garage Band using an Oxygen 8 keyboard. In the preferences GB says that it sees 7 midi devices. How do I route midi with Garage Band and how do I tell Garage band which midi device to record from? When I create a midi track (well...I think that it is a midi track) and I try to record I do not see any midi notes being recorded.
Searching the help file for midi provided surprisingly little information. I am sure that this is simple stuff...perhaps so simple that I am missing something obvious.

Yes, if the controller sends the right MIDI messages
What do you mean by "the right midi messages"?
I have a virtual instrument (with for example) a delay effect knob. I would like to turn a knob on my midi controller and adjust the delay in the virtual instrument (as I can in just about any other sequencer). Can GarageBand do this, if so, how?

  • How do I set up multiple midi-input devices:WX5 wind & keyboard controllers

    Hello,
I'm trying to setup my system to utilize two midi input devices.
    1. Novation Controller Keyboard connected through USB
    2. WX5 wind controller connected via VL-70 tone module with midi out cable to channel 1 of my Motu midi interface.
As it is currently setup I am able to play both my Wind Controller and MIDI Keyboards fine, but for some reason whenever I finish playing the Wind Controller, the MIDI Keyboard no longer plays sound (it plays midi fine according to the transport, but no sound is created until I load another patch of the EXS).
What am I doing wrong? Should I be switching between inputs in Logic somehow? How can I setup my system to be able to jump back and forth between my midi keyboard and wind controllers? I have done no setup besides cabling the devices in the AudioMidi setup (outside of Logic).
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!

This is just a guess, but if the last thing your wind controller puts out is a volume message of zero (as I think it would do as you stop playing the last note) then you would need to send a volume message to the sound module to reset it to the desired volume.

  • Multiple sound devices mayhem (wiki not helping)

In my computer, there are 3 things wanting to pretend to be sound devices:
*) The motherboard (HDA Intel PCH ALC892)
*) The USB webcam, logitec quickcam 9000 Pro --> Microphone only, yet this thing manages to confuse Linux into thinking it's a soundcard, thereby disabling all sound
*) The nvidia graphics card. Don't ask me how a graphics card can make sound, but does a hdmi port maybe have the ability to make sound or so??
Anyway, while using Skype, sometimes microphone works, sometimes it doesn't. I want my own microphone (plugged into the motherboard on the rear side) as mic, NOT the webcam, and definitely not the graphics card. Sometimes, the microphone is device 0,0, sometimes it's 1,0, and sometimes it's called "default".
Also, whenever booting into KDE, it gives some window about "forgetting" sound devices it detected last time.
Every boot, they're all there, but I think they sometimes swap positions or names.
I actually want ONLY the motherboard as sound device, and want Linux to treat the webcam as video only, and the graphics card as graphics only. And I want it to stabilize, so that I make it work in alsamixer, xmms and skype ONCE, and then it remains working forever without randomly changing.
Any ideas what I can do here? Thanks!
The wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ad … chitecture) isn't helping, it's asking to edit a file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf that doesn't exist and isn't very clear about what format the name of the sound device to give should be, and the alsaconf they mention in the wiki is now disabled in arch...

You can also give your different sound devices fixed indices (fixed order). If not exists, create a file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf or /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf or whatever .conf and define the order of sound slots:
    #/etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf
    options snd slots=snd-hda-intel,snd-usb-audio,...
First slot: card 0, second slot: card 1, ...
There is another handy option to give your devices neat custom names like
    #/etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf
    options snd slots=snd-hda-intel,snd-usb-audio,...
    options snd-hda-intel id="onboard"
    options snd-usb-audio id="logitec"
    Hope this helps!
Edit: more about multiple sound devices here at the alsa wiki.

  • Display your sound device's mixer directly from within Audition 2 or 3

Options>Windows Recording Mixer normally displays the Windows  recording mixer application. If you feel confident about editing the  relevant system file, you can change this to display whatever mixer  application is provided for your particular soundcard as follows:-
    Exit Audition.
In Windows, navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Application Data\Adobe\Audition\2.0 (or 3.0) and make a backup copy of audition_settings.xml in case you make a mistake.
Now edit that file with a text editor such as notepad, find the string sndvol32 /r and change it to the full path and filename of the program which  provides the mixer for your soundcard. On my particular system, for  example, it is
    C:\Program Files\Echo Digital Audio\Console3\console3.exe
    - note that yours is likely to be different, of course...
Save  the file, close the text editor, run Audition and check for correct  operation. If there is a problem, either correct it or restore the  backup copy you made of the audition_settings.xml file.
Thanks to "PQ" on the AudioMasters site for pointing out this tweak.

Without knowing how your computer is configured, it's hard to give you any advice, Delta.
If you were using a standard microphone, plugged into one of your microphone jacks, it would be easy. You'd just choose one of the options you've listed.
But USB microphones can be tricky. And, without sitting down at your computer, it's hard to tell how you've got it configured.
You have to just figure it out by trial and error.

  • I am having trouble with input device and Presonus Studiolive mixer.

Trying to integrate a Presonus Studiolive 16.4.2 mixer/interface into Logic Pro 8.
All the tutorials I've found/watched/read illustrate a window under audio preferences and the user switching the input device (or output device) to the Firestudio Mixer or something along those lines. This was a feature updated in Logic 9, and so my audio preferences are a little different. I still have an input device but not output and when I bring down the menu my only two options are "built-in device" and "built-in microphone" and the mixer isn't showing up. I am wondering if it's possible to integrate it this way? Is there perhaps an order to starting them up? Or is it even possible to use it with this version of Logic? Universal control is installed and operating (responding on screen to stimuli on physical mixer); running osx 10.6.8

Yes, just checked the Presonus release notes for Universal Control 1.7.2 (the latest), and it has removed support for Snow Leopard (OSX10.6.8), so that may be a possible source of the problem - might be worth contacting Presonus Tech support to confirm.
You could update your OSX, but I'd be a bit careful there - not sure if Mavericks supports Logic 8.  If not, I believe there are places where you can still get hold of Mountain Lion (which is supported by UC1.7.2) - a quick net search should do the trick.
Also, I've just re-read your post and notice you ask about the start up order.  The Presonus manual says to switch the desk on first, then fire up the computer.  This used to work with me, but I've recently updated to a new Macbook Pro and had to start using a firewire to thunderbolt connector, and I found that I could now only get the Studiolive to show up in Logic if I start the computer first, then fire up the desk then open Logic.  I raised a tech support ticket with Presonus and they were baffled by this, and couldn't see any reason why it should be, but nonetheless, it's the only way it'll work for me, so probably worth giving it a shot.

  • Please help - multiple IOS devices, Apple ID's and synching

I have an iPhone and an iPad Mini that belong to me.  Two of my kids have iPod Touch and soon a third will have one.  So there are multiple iOS devices in the family, two of which are used only by me.  Up to this point I've been managing them on one laptop running one iTunes library.  I've made various playlists for the kids music, and I gave them each the specific games they wanted, and I put the games I wanted on my devices....certain games for the iPhone and larger, more involved games for the iPad Mini.  I don't put music on the iPad because I only use music on my iPhone.  So all 4 devices have a different selection of games, apps, and music on them.  I've purchased everything with one apple ID....mine, and set each device up with it. Only I know the password so if one of the kids wants something, they still have to bring their device to me so I can put the password in for that purchase.
What I'd like to do is separate my kids apple ID's from mine.  This way, they can use their apple ID's to sign up for other services, have their own saved game data in the cloud, etc.  I'm running into situations where my son and I play the same game, but we keep overwriting each other's game progress because it's stored to my apple ID.  But I still want to be able to control their purchasing, so I figured I'd have to attach my credit card to their new ID's as well, but just not give them the password, so they still will have to come to me to punch in the password to download something.  But hopefully with this new setup, they'll have their own saved game progress that won't interfere with mine, even if we play some of the same games.
But how will this work if we synch them off my laptop?  I don't want to get into creating separate libraries or anything like that, and I'd still like to be able to download some apps using iTunes and put them on the devices manually if I need to.
What is your recommendation on how to handle this???  How will it work exactly?

You can do anything you want with one iTunes, but:
    Devices names must be different.
Don't sync anything under "Info" tab like Contacts Calendars etc. These info must be synced over iCloud. (Use a different Apple ID for each device)
Use the Same Apple ID for iTunes and App Stores settings in all iOS devices.

  • How do I get multiple inputs?

Hi. I have Logic Pro 9 installed on my Macbook and on my iMac. I have tried to use a 12 channel mixing desk as the inputs for recording, but it will only ever allow me to select 2 inputs. This is on my Macbook only, I don't have the same problem on my iMac.  Previously I have a 2 input device (an Apogee Duet) and used this on both computers. When I connect the mixing desk (Yamaha MG166cx-usb via the firewire to USB connector, it shows up in the preferences and allows me to select it as the input and output device under preferences, audio, devices, core audio option. If I add a new audio track, it will only still show me the option of selecting input 1 or input 2. If I do the same on my iMac, it will show multiple inputs. I have uninstalled my previous audio device, and also uninstalled Logic, moved to trash, downloaded again, but the same symptoms are there.

Yes. Of course I read the manual. It quite clearly shows in Cubase, which I haven't installed and don't use 4 stereo and 8 monoaural tracks. It's on page 11 of the hard copy manual. I have however just set up a blank project and tried recording from different channels on the mixer. (1 and 5). I can record either one individually, but only two channels simulaneously, but no more than two channels it seems. Are you saying this is all I ever will achieve with this desk? Seems a bit pointless almost to sell a desk with multiple channels yet only lets you record two of them with one of it's selling points - a USB connection facility. It's not the reason I bought the desk by the way, I use an Apogee Duet to record at home, I just wanted to be able to set up and record each individual channel during a live performance via the PA and then clean up and mix properly at home. Guess I'm not going to get far on that front

  • Can't get sound from USB input device

I've got an Alesis iMultiMix 8 USB mixer plugged into my shiny new MacBook Pro (running Leopard). The Mac properly recognizes the USB Audio Codec as a sound input device, and in fact shows a signal being received from the mixer. However, I don't actually hear any sound from the mixer, even with it selected as my input device, and my recording program still records only from the built-in microphone. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for your help!

Heh... it turns out that there was nothing wrong, at least technically. I got on the phone with Apple and asked if the native OS environment relays inputted audio through the speakers, and was told quite simply, "No." It looks like my PC schools Mac on that account.
As it happens, yes, the programs I was trying to use (Cubase, and I tried Garageband for gits and shiggles) DO have a monitor function to allow the ability, as well as ways to select your input. Cubase, the one I'd been experimenting with, simply has it coached in different (and extremely technical) terms and methods.
So, it looks like my difficulties arose from my lack of experience in a high-level audio program with a steep learning curve, coupled with what I perceive as a basic design shortcoming of Mac. (I think there should at least be an option in the OS environment somewhere.)
Ah well, live and learn. Thank you so much for your assistance.

  • How to manage multiple users/devices/Apple IDs on a single computer

I got my 8 year old an iPad mini for Christmas and I'm about to set it up but I need some advice on using multiple IDs on one computer. I have an iPhone 4s. I assume I will need another Apple ID for the iPad mini so she can use Facetime. How do you manage two devices with different IDs on one computer? Will my movies and music be available for the iPad mini ID? What happens when I plug the iPad into my computer? Do my iPhone apps on my account disappear? Do I need to log out of my iTunes store account? Is their a danger in mixing the two accounts? I was told to be careful if you plug another iPhone into your computer because it can wipe your phone and replace it with another users info if you don't log out/in correctly. It's very confusing so if anyone could give me some advice on how to set this up and manage two IDs and devices on one computer it would be helpful. Thanks:)

This should be of some help.
How to use multiple iPhone, iPad, or iPod devices with one computer
Your daughter is too young to have an Apple ID because the minimum age is 13 years old. You can use her email address for FaceTime and Messages. You add the address as the contact address when you activate both of those apps. But both apps will still have to be tied to your Apple ID.
I was managing 5 different devices with one iTunes library and all devices had their own unique content on them. It is not that difficult to manage.
there is lots and lots of information out there on how to do this. Check some of these out for more information.

  • Can I use a MIDI keyboard as an input device for a software instrument?

I have a Casio CTK-2100 that I am currently playing around with in Logic Pro 9. It can record and playback the different instruments fine using MIDI tracks. But I was wondering if it is possible to use the keyboard as an input device for a software instrument instead of the "Step Input Keyboard".
Is it? If so, how do I set it up?

Yes, the terminology can be a bear, many, many years ago when I started using Logic the manuals were written completely by the programmers, while they were quite humorous in places the were also really hard to understand so I learned/realized.. you can't really do anything so wrong it's going to destroy your computer so why not go ahead and experiment. I learned the basics of Logic without a manual, months later when I went back to find some some details I could figure out the manual made a lot more sense.
Logic has been somewhat Appleized but it's not really an Apple program, it was purchased almost as developed as it is now... a lot of the additions a fluff to make it easier to understand for new users while at the same time there are some real improvements.
This is personal opinion: With all of the forums/online tutorials...etc...etc. It seems users are learning (but not understanding) the same things, plus everyone wants to use it right away so nobody takes a deep breath and investigates on their own. Logic is a deep, deep program, while learning don't be afraid to go off on a tangent and explore the program without any other input, it can actually be inspirational. One other thing good about the manual or "Online Help", in looking up a function you will invariably come across a related concept that will provide further insight.
    And..... have fun.

  • Remote System Input Device Not Working

    Hi,
when i try to connect remote system through RDP, input device (Keyboard & Mouse) in remote system is too slow, it takes more time to respond. Tried to take RDP from different system but same problem.
    Looking forward for your response.
