Multiple install issues for first time user of 10gRelease2

Despite doc which said 10g Release 2's certification with Windows XP Professional (> SP 1), clusterware install fails with OUI-1-8001 (Error - needs XP ver 5.0 or 5.2). My XP Prof Ver 5.1.2600 apparrently isn't compatable. Error msg suggests upgrading Service Pack.
Tried to install Personal Edition, but never saw the oppty to selection it after downloading individual zip files (clinet, gateways, clusterware) into separate folders and then running setup.exe's in each folder. Don't know if I'm running Personal Edition.
This is my first time attempt to install Oracle dB. Appears that my installation of client and gateways went ok, but I'm not doing something right to start SQLPLUS or my clusterware issue is causing a problem.
When starting SQLPLUS, entered by username (email), passwd, not sure what to enter for host string. Leaving blank, a timeout occured. Do I need a connect identifier? SQLPLUS hangs if I try to then click File.

SQLPLUS hangs if I try to then click File.Am curious - which version of Oracle DB 10gR2 did you download? Did you take 10.2.0.1 or did you grab the 10.2.0.3 for Vista or 10.2.090.4 for Win 2008? The questions sound suspiciously like the latter.
If you have the right one for WIndows, the Personal Edition selection shows up on the very first screen - you select whether you want Enterprise Edition, Standard Edition (which also includes the SE1 variant) and Personal Edition. No selection implies wrong download.
Under normal circumstances, you ONLY install the database CD. That gives you pretty much all you need for learning, including the SQLPlus. Then if you want more - such as the sample data, because you deliberately did not include it at database install, or the Apache front end - you get the Companion CD and install it after the fact. The Client CD is used for those computers that do not have the database CD. Gateways are used on the database much later, when you want to connect to DB2 or SQL Server and the like. And the clusterware is when you are really advanced ands want to get a high availability cluster operational.

On rereading your question, it sounds like you installed everything instead of just the database CD. You need ONLY the Database download for learning.

I work within a global organisation - with many people turning to Captivate for the first time. We all share the same LMS.
I want to create a short "check-list" of the most important Captivate Preference / Settings or ways of working to help new users (and old users) get the best from Captivate and to ensure the projects they upload the our LMS run pretty much trouble free.
For example:
1. Always work locally (local C drive)
2. Edit /Preferences - select Generate Project Backup
3. Set slide quality to High 24-bit
4. Dont copy paste images, use Captivate Image>insert and .PNG format
What in your opinion, would you suggest the most important "Do, Don't and Never" new users need to be made aware of?
We have different versions of Captivate being used, ranging from v4 to v7 - so I appreciate this will all have to be fairly generic.

Hi all
WRT working off a server, this is something I've always admonished as a huge thing to avoid. I've always used the analogy of working in my kitchen and preparing a recipe. Your captivate project and all the ingredients are stored in your local C drive which is similar to your fridge and pantry, Need to add an image? (egg) As long as your project is on the C drive, it's similar to opening the fridge and grabbing an egg. As long as there is an egg in the fridge, no problem. Instant access. But nothing says you MUST work this way, Sure, I can just go to the store any time I need an egg. But I have to stop what I'm doing, get in the vehicle, drive to the store, purchase the egg, drive back and finally I can use the egg. And to me, that's EXACTLY what it's like when you work with your project on a server.
My recommendation is always to keep the project on your local drive and periodically make backup copies of the project on a server for safekeeping.
Just to note that this is really more of a common thing among many applications. Some apps are more sensitive to where files are placed than others, but it's a characteristic shared by many.

Pacman issues for first time install

I cant install anything using pacman every time I get the error
error: failed to commit transaction (wrong or NULL argument passed)
errors occurred, no packages were upgraded
I have tried deleting the cache and re syncing it doesn’t work.
Tried the create fastest mirror script which seemed to help then suddenly this.
Not sure what do?
Any help would be great. I will provide any information required. Really want to try arch out but this has pretty much halted proceedings.

Also i put my proxy details into wgetrc and then changed my pacman.conf to use XferCommand wget
I can see that the proxy is giving a [302 Moved Temporarily] for a few of the db's
The proxy is blocking some of the sites. Im going to change mirrors and see what it says then.
EDIT: Update i did the change of mirro and its downloading but now im back to my orginal problem of
Operation too slow Less than 1024 bytes/sec transferred the last 10 seconds
The base.db finishes fine but the rest will not download successfully. It downloads up until a certain point then just stops. The extra.db reaches 63% and community.db reaches 73% but they both get stuck there and give the error
Any thoughts?

Installation freezes trying to install itunes for first time

I just got my first ipod and I'm trying to install itunes. There's no error message but installation just seems to freeze after two or three percent. I've tried mozilla and ie, and I tried downloading from filehippo. I did the msconfig thing too, but since I don't have any quicktime or itunes do disable it doesn't seem to matter.

The page that you posted from has instructions for how to reset them i.e. if you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) set up on your account then steps 1 to 5 half-way down that page should give you a reset link.
If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer your questions) then you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple in your country to get the questions reset (these are user-to-user forums).

When they've been reset (and if you don't already have a rescue email address) you can then use the steps half-way down the HT5312 page that you posted from to add a rescue email address for potential future use

Cannot install free app first time user

1st time using a Mac and just want to install Text Wrangler app
Keeps asking for Apple I.D and then i get this:
This Apple ID has not yet been used with the App Store.
So i cannot install it from the App Store

Which home screen? There are dozens and none of them have a settings tab.

Questions for first time user

I have two problems. 1st....I downloaded pictures on my ipod and I can't get them to save to my computer. 2nd...I downloaded a movie on my ipod and it appears to be there, but doesn't play on the ipod. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you copied photos to your iPod using the full resolution option, enable disk use, open your iPod in "my computer", open the photos folder then open the "full resolution" folder and drag the photos out of that folder to your desktop. For enabling disk use look here.

If you only copied the photos as thumbnails, you can't do this so you'll need a program such as this one.

Photos as thumbnails won't be very good quality when copied back to your computer.

Just installed Safari for first time and it won't open

Instead of opening, a small portion of the Safari toolbar displays, and almost immediately Microsoft wants permission to phone home and report the problem with a note that says: Safari Web Browser has encountered a problem and needs to close.
Restarting, and repairing has not helped, nor has reinstalling.

Trial Photoshop CS6 - can I access it as a first-time user?

I downloaded trial Photoshop CS6 on my iMac as a first-time user, knowing that my serial number for CS1 was out of date (I'm retired and haven't used Photoshop for years). But I can't activate it. Is it not available for first-time users and if not, how can I uninstall it safely? I really want to try it out before I buy the full version, and was unaware that I needed a serial number until the install.

You don't need a serial number for trielas. if it timed out, something went wrong.
Adobe trial software expired early
Uninstall it using the uninstaller that comes with the program.

Performance issue in browsing SSAS cube using Excel for first time after cube refresh

As that thread is marked as answer, but my issue is not resolved, I am creating a new thread.
I am facing a cache and performance issue for the first time when I try to open a SSAS cube connection using Excel (using Data tab -> From Other Sources --> From Analysis Services) after daily cube refresh. In end users system (8 GB RAM but around
4GB available RAM), for the first time, it takes 10 minutes to open the cube. From next run onwards, its open up quickly within 10 secs.
We have daily ETL process running in high end servers. The configuration of dedicated SSAS cube server is 8 core, 64GB RAM. In total we have 4 cube DB - out of which for 3 is full cube refresh and 1 is incremental refresh. We have seen after daily cube
refresh, it takes 10 odd minutes to open the cube in end users system. From next time onwards, it opens up really fast with 10 secs. After cube refresh, in server systems (32 GB RAM, around 4GB available RAM), it takes 2 odd minutes to open the cube.
Is there, any way we could reduce the time taken for first attempt ?
As mentioned in my previous thread, we have already implemented a cube wraming cache. But, there is no improvement.
Currently, the cumulative size of the all 4 cube DB are more than 9 GB in Production and each cube DB having 4 individual cubes in average with highest cube DB size is 3.5 GB. Now, the question is how excel works with SSAS cube after
daily cube refresh?
Is it Excel creates a cache of the schema and data after each time cube is refreshed and in doing so it need to download the cube schema in Excel's memory? Now to download the the schema and data of each cube database from server to client, it will take
a significant time based on the bandwidth of the network and connection.
Is it anyway dependent to client system RAM ? Today the bigest cube DB size is 3.5 GB, tomorrow it will be 5-6 GB. Now, though client system RAM is 8 GB, the available or free RAM would be around 4 GB. So, what will happen then ?

Could you run the following two DMV queries filling in the name of the cube you're connecting to. Then please post back the row count returned from each of them (by copying them into Excel and counting the rows).

Unfortunately, there's not enough info listed to give you an effective answer.
Can you give more detailed system spec's. There are a lot of differences in RAM, & Hard Drive Technologies. Is your 2TB a single hard drive, or multiple drives in RAID? While a single 2TB drive is nice for the storage capacity, they also sacrifice some performance to reach that capacity... What speed is the RAM, & I'm assuming it's properly opperating in Dual Channel mode (watch your POST screen to be sure). Which Core i7 CPU are you running, & what Operating System are you running. Finally, bring up your task manager, & see what processes are using CPU cycles. Also, are you starting up PrE8 through the default shortcut which uses the Welcome screen?
A quick guess is that Auto Analyzer & the Welcome screen are behind your troubles, but can't be sure till more info is available.
There is a current thread about Auto Analyzer, & I've posted a way to bypass the Welcome screen in several threads.

HT204380 help. tried for first time to use FaceTime with another iPhone user & it would not work. "FaceTime failed". we are both on wi-fi networks & iTunes accounts are set up correctly.

help. tried for first time to use FaceTime with another iPhone user & call refused to connect. Call would dial, allow us to accept call, then error message "FaceTime failed" would appear & call disconnect. we are both on wi-fi networks, both phones have updated software & both enabled FaceTime with iTunes logged in. don't know what else to do to get FaceTime to connect. Thanks Helen for the response. At least you can get some of the contacts to work. Absolutely none of mine will. Feel like my phone is cheating me out something it should do. Think I'm going to just have to dump all the Apple products in general because this phone hasn't worked right since I got it.
