Multiple instances of iTunes library in Computers menu

Since upgrading to Yosemite/iTunes 12, I see two instances of my iTunes library in the Apple TV "Computers" menu. The thing is, they're there even when iTunes isn't running, and home sharing is off for that library. I've tried restarting the ATV and unplugging it, and neither has helped.

I am having the same issue. No less than 7 duplicate iTunes libraries appearing under "Computer" on Apple TV2 since I installed Yosemite. Restarting both devices, quitting and reopening iTunes, stopping and restarting Home Sharing has not removed the duplicates. Never seen this behavior before.
In addition I have seen some other odd behavior: Usually if more than one person is logged into their accounts on my iMac, their respective shared libraries appear on the ATV. I have recently seen the ATV show only one library, even though other uses are logged on. To restore other libraries has required an iTunes restart or a computer reboot.
Also, the ATV seems unable to wake the iMac for access, has to be done manually. (Wake for network access is checked).

  • Sharing iTunes library across computers

Step 5 of the Help file says "select 'Automatically import new purchases from [Computer Name].'" Where is that selection found?

Thanks for the suggestion. I'd be happy to elaborate. In iTunes Help, enter "home sharing" as the search term, and select the top topic, "Sharing your iTunes library across computers." The five items are under the heading, "To import items from other libraries using Home Sharing."
I have gone over the steps again and found my problem. I was signed onto the Store under different names (different Mobile Me email address, both mine) on the two computers. I switched to the same name, then turned Home Sharing off and then on on both computers. When each opened the other's library, the other library window has a Settings button in the lower right hand window. That button produces a pane with setting for automatic transfer.
The Help file could be improved. Or iTunes could recognize multiple email addresses for one Mobile Me account. Thanks again.

  • Making Multiple Entries Into iTunes Library Columns

Is there any way to enter the same data for multiple songs into a column I have selected for my iTunes library? For instance I would like to subdivide my jazz songs into categories like Bop, Bosa Nova and Progressive. I added the columns "Category" and "Description" to my library by selecting View>View Options and checking the boxex for Category and Description. Those columns now appear in my library and I can enter data for one song at a time by clicking on the column for that song. However, I cannot find a way to enter data for multiple songs in those columns at one time. I can highlight multiple songs and go to File>GetInfo>Info to enter the same data for the selected songs but only for the fields included in the Info dialogue box. The new columns I selected, "Category" and "Description", were not added to the Info dialogue box so I cannot modify this data there. A simple solution from Apple would seem to be to automacally add all selected fields to the GetInfo>Info dialogue box, but that option does not seem to exist at this time. Does anyone know how I can enter the same data in multiple songs in these additional columns all at once. Thanks

OK, I'm done writing the app.
Go to my iTunes scripts page and follow the link there for downloading Perl (if you don't have it already). Install Perl, and then download my itunes_info script. Select the track(s) in iTunes, then run the script to edit the Comment and Description fields for multiple (or single) tracks. You can get a freeware utility similar to GhostTyperXML to attach the script to a key combo if you're going to be doing this a lot.
In addition to allowing you to edit the comment and description fields, it will allow also you to rate songs using 1/2 stars (e.g. 2.5 stars).
Sorry, you cannot use it to change the artwork.

  • Sharing an iTunes library between computers

is it possible to share a library btwn itunes apps on separate computers in the same house/wireless network?
not looking to trump the 5 computer limit, but trying to get two computers to show the same library between them. when i buy a song in one place, to show it as available to play on the other, too...also making it possible to update ipods from both...
    any thoughts would be great...

    Hi,
We have something similar with 2 computers at home, and use 'iTunes Library Updater' (freeware on http://itlu.ownz.ch/wordpress/) which should serve your purpose.

  • 1 iTunes library, 2 Computers

    Morning/Afternoon forum,
i have a MBP and Mini. I have my iTunes Media on a Drive permanently attached to my Mini and iTunes open and running on my Mini as its at home and is the ho,me server for tunes and movies. The library is too big to drag with me and my MBP.
Can i, when i get home with my MBP and have connected to my Mini via 'Connect As', open iTunes with Alt or Option held down [can never remember which it is] and select that iTunes library that is attached to my Mini? Is there a problem with that?
    Assumptions:
i am then using and editing the Mini library and the library xml file that goes with that library. I am not touching the Library, which through iTunes Match should be similar but without everythign downloaded, that is on my MBP?
does it matter 2 computers are looking at 1 iTunes library? Will the Mini update, say, a Movie Title i change via the MBP?

and in addition, if iTunes is open on the headless Mini and i open wih MBP while connected to the Mini with 'Connect As', does that corruopt anything? 2 machiens using 1 iTunes to edit...?

  • Multiple macs and iTunes library on NAS device

My iTunes library is stored on a Buffalo NAS drive.
I have an older Mac desktop - running OS X 10.6.8; on this machine iTunes 11.4 is set up to use the library on the above noted NAS device.  This is working fine; all my burned and purchased music is playing no problem.
I have a new (latest) version Macbook Pro Retina - running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.  I proceeded to set iTunes 12.1.0.50 on this machine to use the exact same shared location as is being used on the desktop noted above for the library location.  On this machine, however, I am only able to view my purchased music (with the download cloud displayed).
Anyone know why two Macs pointed to the exact same iTunes library shared folder location would result in one working fine and the other only showing purchased music available for download?
    Thanks

How exactly did you set it?  You do not do it in preferences (a common mistake).  You do it by starting up iTunes while holding down the option/alt key whereupon iTunes will irreversibly convert what it sees as the library, namely the iTunes Library.itl file, to a version which will only work with the newest version of iTunes you run (your 12).  Clearly you can't use 12 on your old computer so there is no way to share the same library file. Each version of iTunes will have to run its own library file which will essentially maintain its own independent list of entries, though they can share media.  This means changes you make to one library will mostly not appear in the other but if you do something such as delete media in one library the other library will fuss it can no longer find the file, etc.
If you are going to start doing advanced iTunes things you need to learn how iTunes works.

One other tip. Just about every mention I see of people using iTunes with a NAS is something with a problem that results from using iTunes with a NAS.  iTunes is likely not written with NAS use in mind.  It may work, or it may not.  Keep regular backups.

  • Multiple iphones, 1 itunes library, 1 account - how to share ratings?

    Hi all,
My husband and I share one itunes account, one music library and we log into the computer with one account. We have the same music available on our iphones which we rate - than delete the rest (from the library and the computer).
Problem comes when one syncronizes the phone and ratings which get overwritten by the other's choices. We've tried one of us using the ratings, the other adding a special genre hoping that it would somehow be merged. I am not quite sure though, what's the rule - I would have thought that the ratings are overwritten only if the second one is higher, or genre is updated only if the second one has something chosen or an added comment overwrites the empty area..
We have also tried creating playlists on the phones, adding these playlists to the main library, adding the ratings afterwares, syncronize it with the songs located in the main library.. Not sure what overwrites.
Would anyone have a solution? I'd be much appreciated, thanks!

Your iTunes account can be authorised on up to 5 computers at any one time (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1420). You can also use home sharing so as to share your content between computers or to listen/watch content on your iOS devices : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3819 (you can also copy music between computers via home sharing)
As long as you use the same iTunes account as you originally used to buy/download them then you don't have to pay to re-download (or download on different computers/devices) past purchases of apps or ibooks (or music if you are in the USA) as long as they are still available in the store : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519.
You can also manually copy music/apps/ibooks/films/tv shows between computers and then do File > Add File To Library (or Add Fold) in iTunes so as to add them.

  • Is it possible to have multiple "Instances" of iTunes installed/running?

I have a situation where it would be useful to have multiple iTunes libraries open at the same time. I use Libra 2 to manage my many libraries, but I find it can be a pain to switch back and forth between libraries.
Has anyone out there found a way to have more than one library open at the same time?
What I would like to see on my screen is "Library 1" open, "Library 2" open, etc.. all on the same computer.

You can open a second or subsequent copy of iTunes by opening the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and running the following:
    /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes

  • Is it possible to Sync a single instance of iTunes across 2 computers?

    Hi all,
Strange question, which may have an easy answer... Is it possible to have two copies of iTunes which are synced?
    System stepup overview:
One desktop, one server, array of i-Devices (iPhone 5, 4, iPad 2, iPod Nano)
Server (Server 2008, always on) and desktop (Win 7) connected via Gigabit ethernet
    Challenge:
Currently have iTunes running on the desktop, with all music stored on the server.  Works well, and allows me to easily add and manage my music.  I physically connect my iDevices to the desktop whenever I want to sync.
What I'd like to do is... Have an identical/synced copy of iTunes running on the server.  Because:
    1) I'd like to automatically sync my iDevices over wireless at night when I plug them into the mains - The server is always on, I don't want to have to switch on the desktop to do this.
    2) I'd like the server to run the 'master copy' of iTunes as I plan on using it as an Music Server to push out music to various speakers via Airplay.  Again, having a box which is always on is much better.
I've considered just running iTunes on the server and connecting via a remote desktop type - but this is still slightly 'clunky' and I like to interact directly with a iTunes (for mass tagging and adding of music.
I'm not sure if iTunes features such as Sharing or Match can help me easily overcome this problem.   I.e. If my server runs the 'master' copy of iTunes can I add tracks via the desktop if I use Home Sharing?
Any help you can offer would be appreciated... I'm all googled out!

Yes this is possible, but there are some wrinkles you'll need to work out.
If you're jumping back to a menu slide after visiting one or more quiz slides, you need to make sure your menu slide is still within the quiz scope, because if at any time your user happens to jump to a slide outside the quiz scope (what Captivate considers to be 'the quiz') then Captivate locks the quiz at that point and your user cannot continue to answer questions.  To get around this issue, you just need to make sure there is some interactive object either on the menu slide or before it that is set to report to the quiz as a scored object.  That will extend the quiz scope to include the menu slide.
Even though you have divided your module quiz up into sections, as far as Captivate is concerned it's just one big quiz.  So the reporting on your Quiz Results slide will not show your segmentation as separate scores. There are ways you can achieve (fudge) this with variables and Advanced Actions.  Check out Lilybiri's blog for more details.

  • Multiple instances of bookmark library

When you "show all bookmarks" in Firefox a "library" window pops up. If you ever try to sort a huge amount of bookmarks you would appreciate having multiple "library" windows open.
Is there an extension that allows you to have multiple "library" windows open and/or a bookmark manager that would functionally be comparable.

I'm not sure if all code is fully re-entrant, so use with care to avoid database corruption with opening multiple Library windows and avoid doing complicated actions in more that one window.

  • 2 instance of iTunes?  Good idea, or bad?

I used two iTunes instances to sync calendar at work and music/applications at home. After doing this for the first time yesterday, my iPhone 3Gs did not function properly. Applications didn’t load (the would just pop up a splash scren and then go back to the menu) and I noticed the power indicator never moved from 100% all day. I did a recovery and it all works again.
I've had to re-download all the free applications, but the ones I paid for are asking me to pay for them again. How do I get those without paying again?
Also, what might have caused the issue in the first place? Should I not use multiple instances of iTunes? Both are newly downloaded in the last week, so they ‘should’ be the latest versions.

You definitely shouldn't have to re-pay for apps you already paid for. Are you sure you're logged in with the same account you bought the apps under?
If so: On the iPhone and iTunes it will look like you need to re-buy an app, but once you start the download it will just tell you that you've already bought it and it will download it again for free. Try this on one of your cheapest apps and see if it works.

  • TS1741 the remote app keeps forgetting the itunes library

The remote app works once only when connected. Prior to the most recent Remote update, it would always find my library.  I now have to go to File, Home Sharing, then turn it off an on again.  A bit of a pain.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this apparent fault?

Thanks!! This finally solved my problems (I have a wireless router that came with my Verizon FIOS) as my firewall, antivirus settings, and other settings were not the problem or were in accordance with other threads on this matter.  I am now finally able to concurrently access my 4 Airport Express Devices (setup wirelessly and hooked up to home theater system, portable speakers, & stereo system in different rooms) via Itunes from my two networked (ethernet cable) PCs (One running Vista and the other running Windows 7) and my Daughter's Mac (wireless), plus use my IPOD Touches as remotes for two of the PCs (Of course, they are accessing the same wireless network).
In addition to one of the IPOD touches being used as a remote for a PC playing Itunes, I can concurrently use it to play the Music App (for music actually resident on the IPOD) using Airply and directing to the 4th Airport Express.
Each Itunes program on each computer or IPOD Touch is playing it's own Library and different songs.  Of course, although I'm doing this concurrently, all deivces are directed to a different Airport Express device.  This is all being done using one wireless router with all wired devices on the same segment.  Although I have noticed that I have to start one PC first before the other before this all works (don't know why), the MAC never gives a problem.
Note related to this issue, it would be great if I could run multiple instances of iTunes on the same computer using different Music Libraries and directing it to different Airport Express devices in addition to the above.

  • My apple tv 2 says I can't stream music from my iTunes library on my iMac without settng up iTunes Match. I don't want to set up iTunes match. How can I get back to the pre-Match system which let me just use home sharing to stream music from computer to A

When I click on the Music tab on my Apple TV 2, a message tells me I have to set up iTunes Match to stream music from my iTunes library on my iMac. I don't want to set up and pay for iTunes Match. How can I get back to the pre-Match system which let me just use home sharing to stream music from computer to Aple TV

    Ditto.
You need to look for your itunes library under Computers and select it, then music.
Music column is for web based content not local content, just to confuse everyone.
