Multiple internet connection download balancing on Mac

Hi All!
I have two separate Internet connections, both are adsl 2mbps. One is available by Ethernet cable, second one is a WIFI. The come from separate lines. Lately I am downloading a lot, and I am looking for software that would utilize both connections. I went through forum and I found couple of threads here:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/9437318#9437318
https://discussions.apple.com/message/9437318#9437318
https://discussions.apple.com/message/6365245#6365245
https://discussions.apple.com/message/8137953#8137953
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1660762?threadID=1660762
But none really answered my question. All threads are archived already so I decided to refresh this topic, as some time passed and solutions could changed.
Do you know/use any good software that would load balance Internet download form both lines so I would endup with 4mbps?
This would be very helpful for me. Thanks a lot in advance!

I got a first Mac Pro from Apple Store on September 1st. I had to send it back due to the misfunction of the AirPort connection. I have an AirPort network with an AirPort Express base station and four PPC-macs functioning perfectly. From the beginning the Mac Pro connection (same rooms side on side with other Macs, for instance an iBook) had only one third of reception strength for the Internet and the speed for the connection with other computers in the same network (which I need badly) was in-cre-di-bly slow. Big jobs were'nt even finished correctly.
Yesterday (september 22th) I got a Mac Pro in replacement – exactly the same phoneomena. Serial Number is CK6370X2UPZ. Just as our Norwegian collegue expressed it: you could cry. I will send this one back, too, an wait for a month or so before I order a new one.
At the Apple Service they tend to tell you that you are the first one reporting such problems.

  • Sharing display and internet connection between a 13inch Mac Book and G4

Does anyone know whether it is possible to connect a Mac Book and a G4 Powermac with an ethernet cable and then hook them both up to the same display and ethernet internet connection?

Usually you use a router to share an internet connection and to make a local network between the computers over Ethernet or WiFi. I think it is possible to directly connect the computers without a router, but you might have to use a cross-over cable, I'm not sure how to set up a direct connection. Using a wireless router with wired ports would allow you the flexibility of using the MacBook wirelessly and the PowerMac with a wired connection. I have an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station, and it was pretty easy to set up, it plugs into my cable modem to share the internet connection.
They make hardware devices that allow you to share a docking station between more than one computer, called a KVM switch, so you can have one keyboard, video display, and mouse and switch between two active computers.
Alternately, using the network connection, you can use Chicken of the VNC, which is a virtual network computer, this opens a window, or full-screen mode, of a computer so you can operate it from another computer.
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/
You can also control a PC from the Mac using Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection.
    http://www.microsoft.com/mac/otherproducts/otherproducts.aspx?pid=remotedesktopc lient
Some monitors have multiple inputs, so you wouldn't need to use a KVM switch, if for example your monitor has both DVI and VGA inputs, the front panel can select the source, so you could use a DVI adapter for the MacBook and a VGA for the PowerMac. You could still use the KM portion of a KVM switch if you wanted to use a single full-size keyboard and mouse with both computers.

  • Multiple Internet Connection Issues

Hi there, long time reader first time poster.
I figured I should post this as, while having read through hundreds of similar posts I still can't figure out how to solve my connectivity issues.
I just bought a new iMac 21.5 inch 3.2Ghz i3 model and while I am happy with the machine overall, it is the second one in a month - the first had a faulty ethernet port and refused to connect to the internet out of the box. Apple replaced it without question - almost as if they knew.
The replacement has now seemingly developed the same issue.
Some background info. The computer was connected both through ethernet and through the TC I bought to back it up until yesterday. So I was getting both a wireless signal from the TC and one through ethernet.
I have a hub that has 5 devices connected to it ( Printer, Cable TV, iMac and TC - now a PS3 ) That hub is served a signal by a simple NTT modem connected to a phone line. That modem is now nearly 5 years old but has always given great net speeds so I don't believe the problem to be the modem - I could be wrong though.
I just bought a PS3 and tried connecting it yesterday but had multiple problems. Despite me entering the correct PPPoE information to the letter, the PS3 refused to connect, saying the password and username was incorrect. I could connect it via a Bluetooth signal but no hard wired connection would work.
So I unplugged everything from the hub, shut down all the machines, turned off the modem and let it sit for 10 minutes and then plugged the ethernet cable from the PS3 straight into the modem, giving it a direct line. Switched on modem, rebooted PS3 and tried again - this time it connected through ethernet. I still don't know how or why. I can guess but I'm sure you guys know much more about this than I do.
So then I tried connecting the iMac back to the net, reconnected all the hub, followed the same procedure. Off, sit for a bit, on etc. This time the PS3 has no connection and now the iMac has no connection either!
The TC gave a green light though so I was able to get wireless. I tried removing all net locations from the iMac, installing new ones, renewed the DHCP lease, but no matter what I did (PPPoE info 100% correct) it just refused to establish a connection.
The the bloody TC light flashed amber and I couldn't get wireless either despite being plugged into the hub and getting a signal! The PS3 is now working and the cable is fine so I am starting to think either I have cluster ****** the whole setup or something is wrong with the iMac.
I go away for an hour then come back and the stupid TC has somehow picked up a connection! The light is green again?! But now the time connected display is scrolling repeatedly. I've got net but what the **** is wrong with all this?
Bottom line - not ethernet connection for the iMac but TC seems to be working and all other devices have a connection.
Please help me if you can! I just can't figure any of this out.

Your description is a bit confusing, but I use English as a second language, so it may be just me.
    1. How is the hub connecting to your modem, by ethernet cable or wirelessly?
    2. Which device is negotiating the internet connection with your ISP, the modem?
    3. Does the device that negotiates the connection use PPPoE?
    4. How are the other devices being handed their internet connection? DHCP only?
Only one device should be connecting directly to your ISP using the PPPoE protocol and configured with your account username and password. This device is preferably the modem. This device should be configured to hand out internal IP addresses to the other devices on your LAN using DHCP. All of the other devices should be configured to request an IP from that device, whether by ethernet or wi-fi, just with DHCP.

  • I Lose Internet connection each time my Mac Sleeps

I have an iMac 21" late 2009 model.
Since I installed Lion, every time my Mac "nods" after leaving it a bit, after waking up it will take about a minute for the internet connection (dsl ethernet) to come back. It's frustrating, I turn on my mac to browse the web, I open Safari but then I have to sit there waiting for the internet connection to come back.
Something is wrong and it's annoying..

If you had mountain lion, you could've used a feature called power nap. It keeps networking on even when the mac is asleep.
On other OS, I guess its bound to disconnect all networks when it goes to sleep You can try an app called Caffeine that doesn't let it go to sleep.

  • Need help sharing internet connection between pc and mac using airport

    Hello
I have a PC with an internal modem that connects to the internet via 3g+. it's got wi-fi as my macbook.
i want to share the internet connection of the pc via wifi (using what is called an "ad hoc" connection ( a pc to pc network)) so that the mac can connect to the pc (via wifi) and use its internet connection.
i've already tried a bunch of things but they don't work, can someone help me or tell me where i can find a GOOD guide to do this? (i've already looked around but i haven't found anything that works)
    thanks

Hi. I'm not sure if this helps, but I just found a nice way to do it the other ways around (share the internet from your mac with your pc).
    See: http://echeng.com/journal/2009/07/06/encrypted-internet-sharing-between-mac-os-a nd-windows-xp/
Specifically, step 4 and 6 are crucial!:
    1. In Mac OS X, enable Internet Sharing to computers using Airport
    2. In AirPort Options, select 128-bit WEP encryption and enter a 13-character password
    3. In Windows, add a new wireless network
    4. Enter the SSID and select WEP encryption with Shared Network Authentication (not Open)
    5. Uncheck “The key is provided automatically” and enter the 13-character password
    6. In the Authentication tab, be sure that “Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication” is unchecked
The main idea is that MAC-WEP and PC-WEP are not quite the same, so this tweak makes them line up. Perhaps you can do it the other way around from PC to MAC by sort of reversing the idea?
    Hope that helps you!

  • Optimal use of multiple internet connections

    G'day,
lets say that you can access the internet via multiple means lets say over ethernet and airport. Perhaps you want OSX to prefer one over the other when one is faster than the other, or just to share internet usage over the two resources.
Is there a way of doing this using OSX, or is the a 3rd party app to achieve this?

You can aggregate two links of the same type (e.g. two (or more) gigabit ethernet ports) but you cannot do it with different interface types (e.g. one wired ethernet port and one wireless).
That's because of the way that link aggregation works - the host system and the switch it's connected to have to agree on how the packets are split between the multiple links. This cannot be done if links don't all go to the same place - e.g. one link to a switch and one link to a base station.
With a wired and a wireless port, the best you can do is active/standby.
Of course, this discussion is only relevant if your internet connection is greater than the speed of one of your links - in this case 54mbps - otherwise all you're doing is talking to your router faster, which is going to throttle the traffic down to your WAN link speed.

  • Airport Express - need to run multiple internet connections from it.

    My systems:
    iMac
    Airport Extreme
    Airport Express
Currently, I use my airport express to wirelessly "feed" an internet connection to my Vudu box (movie download box). Right next to that box I would like to connect my Wii and DirecTV boxes to the internet using the airport express. The problem is that the airport Express has only one LAN line.
How can I share this one port with all three devices? I don't want to keep adding Airport Express boxes nor do I want to add an Airport Extreme at that location as I use airtunes on my stereo and Airport Extreme doesn't offer that. As you can tell I am not very computer literate so go gentle on me
    any help is much appreciated.
    Guy

Ok I need everyone's help. I just bought the AirPort Express I am running Windows XP Service pack 3 I have the ethernet connected to the airport express from our wireless router at the same time my computer is connected to the internet the same way. My computer has Internet just fine. After installing AirPort utility it is saying it is unable to find any Apple wirelss device. I am wanting to use my AirPort express with my IPhone when I travel Internationally. I know it works because fellow employess have done this. I have tried unplugging my Airport Expess and the light keeps blinking amber. How do I get to to flash green and how do I get the Utility to detect the Express so I can set everything up?

  • Multiple Vlans with multiple Internet connections using PBR

    Hello all,
I'm trying to wrap my head around this configuration and not having a lot of success.  I have several Vlans 3,6,71,72,160, and 180.  I have two internet connections, Internet1 is connected to an ASA5510 and Internet2 is connected to a Meraki MX80.  I'm using two 4506 switches on my backbone trunked to 3750 switches that my clients connect to.  None of these switches have IP Services and my 4506 supervisor does not have an Enterprise license. However I do have one 3750 100Mbit switch with IP Services so I'm using that to do my PBR.  All my routing is currently being done on the 4506 switches and all Internet traffic is going to the ASA.  What I would like to do is force vlan160 and vlan180 through the Meraki as their Internet connection and the rest of the Vlans go through the ASA.  I'm thinking about trunking my vlans from the 4506 to the 3750 (the one with IP Services) and use policy based routing from there to force vlan160 and vlan180 to the Meraki.  But in order to do this I think I would have to move my routing onto the 3750 switch but since that is only 100Mbits I'm thinking this is going to choke my network down and defeat the purpose of the 4506 backbones.  Any suggestions or alternate ways to achieve my goal?
Appreciate any help you guys can send my way.
    Matt

    Matthew
What is the speed of the connection from the 4500 to the ASA and what is the combined speeds of the internet connections ?
You definitely don't want to do all the inter vlan routing on the 3750. You could connect it up as shown in your diagram but leave all the routing between vlans on the 4500s. Then you -
    1) connect the 3750 to the 4500 using a L3 point to point link
    2) connect the 3750 to the ASA using a L3 point to point link
    3) do PBR on the 3750 interface connected to the 4500 for traffic coming from the 4500.
If the 4500 supervisor/IOS version doesn't support routed links on that end just use an access port in a dedicated vlan ie. no other ports in the vlan and create a new SVI for it.
You would need to update your routing to reflect the next hop on the ASA, Meraki, 3750 and the 4500.
    Disadvantages are -
    1) you only have fast ethernet ports on the 3750 so if the combined internet speed is greater than that then it will be a bottleneck.
    2) it is a single point of failure ie. if it is lost all internet via both connections is lost.
The alternative would be to not have the 3750 in the path but connected to the 4500 via a trunk link and then route just vlan 160 and 180 on the 3750 ie. move their SVI(s) onto the 3750. Then the 3750 could have a direct connection to the Meraki device and point the default route that way (no PBR needed). The trunk would only allow those specific vlans on it.  This would mean a failure of the 3750 would not mean ASA internet lost but it would mean loss of connectivity for the two vlans routed on the 3750.
You would need to add routes to the Meraki for return traffic plus routes on the 3750 and 4500 for inter vlan routing.
The main disadvantages here are -
    1) inter vlan routing between the vlans routed on the 4500s and the vlans on the 3750 will be limited by the 100Mbps connection. However you could use an etherchannel trunk so you could get greater overall throughput and some redundancy
    2) more importantly though i suspect you are running HSRP between the 4500s for the client vlans and moving the SVIs onto the 3750 means a single point of failure for those vlans.
Personally i would tend towwards option 1) because of the SVI HSRP issue and perhaps because there may be a lot of inter vlan traffic and even with an etherchannel it would be too much.
But, single point of failure issues aside, a lot does depend on internet bandwidth in option 1) vs inter vlan traffic in option 2).
So it's a tradeoff and personally i don't think either are ideal  so i'll have another think on this in the morning to see if there is anything more obvious that i have missed or maybe someone else will add to the post.

  • Multiple Internet Connections

Hey there everyone, I had an idea the other day and was wondering if this is possible in any language. I would love it if Java had some way of doing this, but I wouldn't think so.
The thing is, I see more and more machines coming out with wireless and lan capabilities. This makes me think, why can't we make use of both connections to the internet? If I'm sitting at home and both a wireless connection and lan connection are made, why can't I download a file using both connections thus doubling my download speed. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I could go about doing this? Does Java have the capabilites to get to the actual connections so I can choose which connection I want to use?
Thanks in advance for any guidance anyone can provide.
    Eric

Hey there everyone, Thanks for all the replies. This is correct that the particular connection I was talking about is connected to the same cable modem, thus using two connections is still sharing one. My thought though was, say you had a limitless connection, where you could get the maximum download speed of your nic card 100 MBPS. If you have the wireless that can get say 10 MBPS (Fictional number), the idea would be to utilize both connections thus giving you the 110 MBPS download.
I know about simultaneous downloads done by get-right and most browsers. I wasn't looking for that, I was looking for making use of the 2 physical connections.
I figured that it had to be at the Operating system level, do you think this kind of access can be obtained through JNI? Thanks for the heads up on Linux, I'll definetly have to look into that.
As for the two IP's, does one machine get two IP's for the two connections? I thought the one machine only had one IP. Will have to test that out next time I can.
Thank you all again for the replies, if there are any other suggestions I would be most greatful.

    Hi:
I've been dealing with a severely slow internet connection with my 2007 mac pro - dual quad core.  I have os 10.7.3.  I use wifi.
Typically, I'll experience difficulty loading websites completely.  Certain sites have a 90% failure rate to load most elements.  Other sites operate quickly from time to time.  Often, a site will simply fail to load at all.  My cable company cannot find anything wrong with my connection and other, newer devices don't have a problem loading sites.  It seems the issue is most likely related to my computer.
Interestingly, I can usually "jump-start" the connection by turning my wifi connection off and on and this will (temporarily) allow me to get an image or video to download.
    Any ideas?

  • Airport Extreme keeps dropping the internet connection to my mac

Hi, for a while now my airport extreme has been dropping my internet connection to all my mac computers. Its just the internet that drops i still have connection to the airport because i have a external HD hooked up to it and i can still access it when the internet drops. I dont think it has anything to do with my macbook because i have taken it friends places that have a wireless router and it never drops there. The airport usually drops when im on youtube watching videos. It always seems to drop when the video is less then half way done loading. I would extremely appreciate the help. Thank you for your time.

My problem is gone!!!!! I found what my problem was! So... after many days of being frustrated with the dropping. I phoned apple. They said it might be the service provider. Ok, well Apple said that some internet service providers don't like it when people use wireless routers. Because of people stealing internet and such. And since there is a lot of computers running off of my wireless router there are a lot of IP addresses connected to the internet opposed to just one set if you were connected to one computer by ethernet. So after my chat with apple, I phoned my internet service provider, Tbaytel. I told them that i have been losing internet connection for 5 months, and i would like it they would tell me what's going on. I told this guy what apple told me about the IP addresses always changing and he started to laugh at me and he told me that they don't know what there talking about.. After they told me to do the stupid shut everything off... now turn it back on.... is that light flashing?? Ok... now plug in the router.... All ******** basically. So after this guy being all confident telling me what to do and thinking that the problem will be gone, we wait 5 min and the internet drops again. So i tell him. There was a long pause....Ok ill try and do a reboot of the connection. He does this reboot thing and i have connection again. It doesn't drop. 3 hours later it drops again... So the problem came from the internet service provider, which was not a very good one. 2 months ago we swithed to SHAW and guess what? We haven't dropped yet!

  • Internet connectivity in Mac through windows platform

the ISP in my area does not provide compatibility to a Mac PC for dial up coonetion. How can I connect my iBook to the ISP which supports only windows OS?

It is highly unlikely that you can't use your iBook and Mac OS X to connect to your ISP via dial-up. The ISP is probably "not supporting" Macs because they don't know a thing a about them, nor do they care to learn.
Your Mac will most likely work just fine via dial-up. There is really nothing WIndows-specific about a dial-up connection.
Can you obtain Windows instructions for the dial-up connection, and post them here? We can probably help you apply those instructions to your Mac and get you connected.
You'll probably end up using the 'Internet Connect' application on your Mac.
