Multiple iPhoto Libraries and iPhone syncing

Hi-
Thanks for reading. I recently used iPhoto Library Manager from Fatcat (highly recommended) to take a 23,000 photo library and chop it down into several iphoto libraries. It seems that my phone by default wants to sync photos with the original library, and not one of the new ones. I am wondering a few things:
1. when i hold down the "option" key when opening iphoto i have the choice of opening any of my libraries. Perhaps the iphone will sync to which ever iphoto library i used last???
2. perhaps iphoto will always recognize my original library as "default" and i need to look into making one of my new libraries the master default?
Is this possible? Can I create a new iphoto library and use this as default across all apple programs going forward?
Any clarity on connection between new iphoto libraries and how the computer, and most importantly, my iphone, will recognize them is appreciated. thanks in advance,
Joe

When you launch iPhoto it opens the last used library - so when you force a launch by connecting a camera or iPhone you will be syncing to the last used library

  • I have multiple iPhoto libraries and when I selecting which library to view (hold down 'option' key and launch iPhoto from the dock) it automatically closes another open apps window eg. Chome, Word. 1 app closes every time I launch iPhoto this way.

I have multiple iPhoto libraries on my Macbook Air 10.7.5 and when I am selecting which library to view (hold down 'option' key and launch iPhoto from the dock) it automatically closes another open application window eg. Chome, Word. 1 app closes every time I launch iPhoto this way.

If you're pushing Option at the exact moment you're clicking the Dock icon, it's supposed to do that. Wait until just after clicking it.

  • Multiple iPhoto Libraries - FB & Flickr syncing

If I create mutliple iPhoto libraries (because my current library is getting big), using iPhoto Library Manager, will photos synced to Facebook and Flickr be maintained or be deleted if they're not in the "open" library?  In other words, how does having multiple libraries effect syncing to FB and Flickr?

    Correct.
6,500 is not a lot of photos. You can run a Library from an external disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Multiple libraries are inconvenient, especially for tiny amounts of photos.

  • Multiple iPhoto Libraries and iDVD

I am using iPhoto (v.6.0.5) that allows for multiple libaries but iDVD (v.6) only accesses the orignial library. Is there an easy way to have iDVD locate my other iPhoto libraries without having to rename the libaries each time?
    Thanks for your help!

    Jerry:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. John's suggestion about drag and drop to the slide bin is how I do my iDVD slideshow. You can use iPhoto Library Manager to manage your libraries but iDVD will have to be restarted whenever you change libraries. But, iPLM (the paid version for 20 or more photos) will let you copy albums or rolls between libraries and that would let you create a new library just for the iDVD project and move the necessary photos quickly and easily to the special library.

  • Multiple iphoto libraries and sharing (Facebook & iCloud)

    Hi All,
I have split my iPhoto library into two separate libraries - one for work photos, one for personal photos. This all works nicely and I'm happy with how it went.
I have a question about sharing photos though...does the sharing I've set up with Facebook and iCloud photostreams travel "with" the library, or is that a higher level, "iPhoto wide" setting?
For example, say in the formerly single library, I had shared a number of personal photos on Facebook and various shared photostreams. Now, in the new "work" library, I delete those photos. I saw the "update" wheel spinning beside the Facebook item in the sidebar when I did so. Should I have turned off sharing for the "work" library?
I guess the question comes down to - does (or can) each iPhoto library have its own sharing settings?

    To answer my own question....
With the "work" library open, I turned off my FB account. Tried opening up the "personal" library, and the FB account was not enabled. So the FB sharing is an "app wide" setting, not a "library level" setting. I turned it back on and I'm good to go. All the pics are still up on FB, and viewable from iPhoto, so I guess it's working fine.
Seems a bit counter-intuitive to me...I would think that if you had multiple libraries for different people, you would want to be able to associate specific FB accounts with those libraries. I.e. Susie's FB account with Susie's library, Johnny's FB account with Johnny's library, etc.
But perhaps that's where one would be better off having multiple user accounts on the Mac.

  • How do you combine mutable iphoto libraries and clean up duplicates

how do you combine multiple iphoto libraries and clean up duplicates

If not the only answer is the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager -http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - and maybe duplicate annihaliator -http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/18748/duplicate-annihilator
You must have IPLM as stated - you may also need DA depending on how thing go with the merge

  • Is it possible to sync multiple iphoto libraries with the iPhone?

I have two libraries in iPhoto 08 but iTunes only lets me pick the default iPhoto library to sync with my iPhone. Is there a way to sync the iPhone with multiple iPhoto libraries?

You are correct.  This used to work in the past although admittedly I haven't tried it for some time as it was of no direct use for my purposes.
If the goal is to see another MobileMe account's calendar(s) on your iOS device then an alternative would be to share the calendar(s) in question to yourself.
    Example:
Assume you currently have MobileMe user account A on your iPhone.
Login to MM user account B with me.com which has the calendar you wish to have access to on your iPhone
    Click on Calendars
Click on the Share button for the calendar you wish to see added to your iPhone.
Type in the MobileMe email address for MM user account A and set it for read & write access
Login to MM user account A on me.com
Go to calendars and accept the invitation to join the calendar you sent from MM account B
Go your iPhone (you may need to turn it on and off to make the calendars refresh ) and check your calendars, you should now have the other calendars added to your MobileMe account A's calendar
Note: You can repeat step # 3 for each of the calendars you wish to see on your iPhone.

  • I have multiple iPhoto libraries w/ duplicates in several. How can I consolidate and find the dupes? Some photos are versions of the original.

I have multiple iPhoto libraries w/ duplicates in several. How can I consolidate and find the dupes? Some photos are versions of the original. On my iMac, I also have many folders containing some of the same photos. My computer is used for both personal and business purposes. My libraries should be separated, one for each.

To merge libraries use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  or Aperature
To find duplicates within an iPhoto library use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -
Photos that are not in an iPhoto library can be imported telling iPhoto not to import duplicates (an imperfect procews) and then IPLM can find the duplicates
As to keeping seperate libraries - only you can do that - IPLM can move photos between libraries for you but only you can know which photos should be in which library

  • Hi. I setup an external hard drive on my AirPort Extreme to act as a central disk for multiple iPhoto libraries. I have a new iMac with iPhoto '11 and an MBPro with iPhoto '09. I'm getting an error message saying different versions. Ideas?

Long title. Sorry. It pretty much explains the situation. I'd like to have all of my photos from two (ultimately three) computers on this central file and be able to access them from any of the computers. The error message I get when I start up my MBPro is: "You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto" and, "You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto." It then forces me to quit iPhoto. I have tried the suggestion of holding down the opt key on iPhoto startup, but it doesn't seem to help.
    Two questions:
Can I store multiple iPhoto libraries on the same central disc?
If so, how should I address the error message?
    Thank you!

Hey Kappy, thank you for your help! Yes, I can open both libraries on the iMac without problem. I am still confused why the computer that created one of the libraries cannot open said library after it was moved to the external disk. Why is the iPhoto format not readable by all versions across the board?? The reason I'm pushing the issue is because in my household, we have an older MB, my wife's MBP, my MBP and now a new "family" iMac. The MB (circa 2007) has an old version of iPhoto, the two MBP's have iPhoto '08 and the new iMac has '11. It is my goal to have all of the photos that we've accrued over the years, located centrally, and accessible from all of these computers. Is iPhoto the most appropriate program, or would Lightroom make more sense?

  • Uploading multiple iPhoto libraries to new iCloud Photos

I've used iPhoto for 10 years, and have multiple iPhoto libraries in order to manage the size and performance within iPhoto.
I'd love to try out the new beta of Photos, and keep everything in the cloud - but I'm unsure if I'll be able to upload all of the libraries to iCloud.  Currently, iCloud / photo stream will only sync and work with one library.  I also read somewhere that once you make the switch, you cannot access iPhoto again.
I'm just wanting some assurances that I can get all 4-5 photo libaries uploaded with no issues.  Thanks.

I also read somewhere that once you make the switch, you cannot access iPhoto again.
This, as of the current betas, is not true.
However, Photos will only work with one Library in the Cloud. So if you want to upload them all then you'll need to merge them into one first.
If you have Aperture 3.3 or later and iPhoto 9.3 or later you can merge libraries with Aperture.
Otherwise the only way to merge Libraries is with the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager
Remember this is beta software. It may change so be sure to have a solid up-to-date back up.

  • Multiple iPhoto libraries to manage photostreams in different ways

My wife and I both have iPhone's. I have a 5s and she a 5. We share an iCloud account so that all photos she takes and ones I take go into one photostream and then automatically get loaded on my iMac hard drive. This way we are sure to not lose any photos.
This works great for that purpose. However, I would like to create an iPhoto library that will only upload photos taken with my iPhone.
I know I can create multiple iPhoto libraries, but I would like to have the ability to manage preferences for each so that they manage photos in different ways.
Is there a way to do this?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may offer.
    Keith

I know I can create multiple iPhoto libraries, but I would like to have the ability to manage preferences for each so that they manage photos in different ways.
Keith, the problem is, that only one iPhoto ibrary can be associated with the photo stream on any device, see e.g.  http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapter=14%26se ction=2%26tasks=true
Photo Stream is designed to work with one Aperture or iPhoto library at a time. However, it’s easy to switch the library Photo Stream uses to upload and download photos.
If you enable the photo stream in a different library, the photo stream will be removed from the earlier library. You would continually have to reanable the photo straem when switching between libraries, and each time the stream would be reset. This way, auto matic import will not work reliably, because the photo stream would only be seeing the current ly stored photos in iCloud.
Have you considered to use the Shared Photo Streams for specific purposes? I am using the Shared Photo Streams as thematic iCloud albums, for wildlife photos, family photos, etc.

  • Multiple iPhoto Libraries to iPad

Has anyone found a way of syncing multiple iPhoto Libraries to an iPad yet? If not, does anyone have the ear of an App developer who can basically replicate the iPad's Photos App but with this additional functionality?

I guess you'll need to wait and make due with what's available.
Also, let Apple know what you'd like to see added at:

  • Multiple iPhoto libraries & on MobileMe Gallery on iPad

I have multiple iPhoto libraries on my Mac (multiple work related project libraries & personal library). I'd like to be able to view them on an iPad. Is that going to be possible? If not, I'm hoping that MobileMe galleries will sync to the iPad. Does anyone know if either of these options is possible?

I upgraded to Lion OS and suffered multiple crashes necessitating a complete rebuild of the system - reformat the main hard drive and install Lion OS from a disk  In an effort to be absolutely sure I didn't lose data I have been overenthusiastic in transferring photos to the backup disk dragging and dropping files that contained images as well as a full transfer of "mymac" before reformating.  Time machine backup was not realistic as this was the one operation which caused most of the "hangs"  System now appears to be working well with Lion OS but I have masses of duplicate jpeg files in multiple folders and libraries - I am considering purchasing Duplicate Annihilator to deal with the duplicates then perhaps I should try to merge the libraries with iPhoto manager?

  • How to import photos from multiple iphoto libraries to iPad

How do I import photos from multiple iPhoto libraries from my iMac to the new iPad? I have 4 different iPhoto Libraries on my iMac.
I can import photos from  iPhoto library 1,  to the iPad, but when I import photos from iPhoto Library 2, created on my iMac to the iPad,
it deletes the original photos that I imported from the first iPhoto Library and replaces them with the import from library 2.
I only want to import selected photos from each library to my iPad. Can someone plese help me?

As Ralph has suggested, if you want to sync photos from your computer, you must include all photos that you want to sync - with each and every sync. You cannot import photos from another Main photo folder on the computer. You must create an all-in-one photo library in iPhoto and sync from that folder. You can select one level of sub folders from within that main folder, but all of those folders must be included in the main folder - in your case it is in iPhoto. That is just how the sync process works with Photos.
I don't know how using third party apps affects the photos that you have already synced from iPhoto, but take a look at these apps in this Google search. Maybe Wifi transfer is the way to go for you.

  • Cannot access correct iPhoto library during iPhone sync

Hi, I have several iPhoto libraries, and currently have the main one identified as the default. However, when I sync my iPhone it only sees one of the others (which I accessed yesterday). I have opened and closed ITunes and iPhoto several times each in an attempt to reset them, but no dice.
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks...

OK, thanks. Did all that...but I can't tell what's going on.
The iPhoto library it's pointing to has no albums at all, so I have only the choice of "All photos and albums" or the number of events.
If I scroll down to the Pictures folder in the Sync photos from option, it contains the folders from the other library.
This pretty much what it's looked like since I started having the problem -- even though can't say for sure when that was...
