Multiple items in "Open with..." Finder menu

Why I see Evernote.app item in my "Open with..." menu in the Finder multiple times? Any chance to remove it and keep it just once?
Thanks.

For those who are interested I have an article on how to clean up the Open With menu here [http://idoitonamac.blogspot.com/2014/03/keeping-open-with-menu-clean-on-os-x.htm l] and I also have made an application to perform all the tasks discussed in the article.
The application (CoW) is available for download here [https://github.com/spaquet/CleanOpenWith/releases]
Hope this helps keeping a clean Open With menu

  • Two "Adobe Reader" menu items in "Open with" context menu

Is there a simple remedy to the problem of multiple occurrences of "Adobe Reader" in the context menu?
That is, in the Finder, on Mac OS 10.6.8, I see two instances of "Adobe Reader" in the "Open with..." context menu...
    thank you in advance.

    Hi!
thanks for the response! I would be happy to find the root cause of this issue (or at least find and remove the data in the facility called Launch Services.
I have no additional binaries of Adobe Reader on the disk. One only.
I think there is some crufty data somewhere, which Launch Services is reading and hence displaying the erroneous menu item.
I suspect the Adobe Reader installer is somehow responsible for this. This was a clean and newly built system disk.
I have been reading the following:
How to rebuild the LaunchServices database
Launch Services Framework Release Notes for Mac OS X v10.5

Now, I tried resetting the "global Launch Services database".
I must restart Finder to see if this was successful. Until later...

  • "Open with" finder menu -- how to customize

When I choose "Open with" from the Finder's "File" menu (or from the contextual menu). I get the spinning beachball for 10-20 seconds while the finder searches EVERY hard disk for every possible program a file can be opened with.
Isn't there some way to configure the possible programs? I'd like to permanently eliminate some program choices, and and also limit the search for programs to my startup disk only. I'm sure that doing so would significantly speed up the search time.

No. It's handled automatically by the OS via the LaunchServices database. You can reset the database as follows:
    Rebuild LaunchServices Database
    For Tiger users
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt paste in the following command in its entirety:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServic es.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
    Press RETURN.
    For Leopard users
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt paste in the following command in its entirety:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
    Press RETURN.

  • Clearing the Finder "Open With" contextual menu ?

After the install I now have duplicates of all the stuff I used to have in the open with menu.
Like VLC and then under it VLC (version number).
    How do I clear it?

    As seen here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305627
*Mac OS X: Clearing the Finder "Open With" contextual menu*
Ever wondered how to "clear" the Finder's Open With... contextual menu choices of any extraneous or older applications? (This is the menu that appears when you control-click or "right-click" a document icon.)
If your Open With... menu is filled with too many choices to easily scroll through, you can remove the less-commonly used choices. These steps will clear the list except for the most current applications that can open your document.
From the Finder Go menu, choose Home.
Open the Library folder in the Home window.
    Open the Preferences folder.
    Find com.apple.LaunchServices.plist.
Rename "com.apple.LaunchServices", such as to "com.apple.LaunchServices.old", or move it to the Trash.
The next time you use the Open With.... contextual menu in the Finder, only current applications will be listed. Some items may return if the application that controls them adds itself back to the list.

  • Clean up Finder "Open With" contextual menu in Yosemite

How do I clean up the Finder "Open With" contextual menu in Yosemite? I have several duplicate and obsolete entries in mine. There are several articles out there that show how to do this for previous versions of Mac OS X, but the instructions don't line up with what I see in Yosemite.
Also, the entries I have in the menu are from a version of Windows through a version of VMware Fusion, both of which versions I haven't used in a long while. I did a clean install of Yosemite this morning (on an erased disk) so I'm curious how the menu was populated. Did it somehow get inherited through the iCloud Keychain?
    Thanks for any help!

  • Ability to add multiple apps to Open With file associations

It would be extremely helpful if Bridge's "file association" dialog allowed one to associate multiple applications with a file type, so the Open With function worked like Lightroom's Edit In function which allows the use of multiple external editors.  As it is currently designed, only one new "default" association can be changed/added.   A current list of other available "editors" also appears in the Open With context menu, but it is unclear (at least to me) where that list comes from because there are some pretty strange entries in the list for any specific file type.
    Thanks

Agreed -- I've always been curious as to what random generator Bridge uses to assign programs with file types.

  • Extra Item in 'Open With' in Bridge CS3

my case it is Paint 5.1, the Windows Explorer and the Microsoft Picture Manager. Is there a WAY to permanently have another product shown there?
Occasionally, I'd like open a JPEG-file with Paintshop Pro for example.
Can't I take OUT Paint 5.1 which I have NEVER used and have another item in this menue?
    Help would be greatly appreciated.

I know you can do this by fooling with the registry, which can be a little intimidating for many users. Search on the web for "add items to open with".
Perhaps another user will have a simpler way.

  • Remove Items from "Open With" Menu

I installed Photoshop CS2 last week and it added a ton of unnecessary and unwanted items in the "Open With" menu in Tiger...
Sorry that image is so large, but imagine having to look at that on a regular basis. Can I remove all of that crap?! It's slowed Tiger's performance considerably.

If you are never going to use them, you can simply trash and restart. Or you can do what I (and many others) have done and leave the ones you do use and zip the rest. They are here:
    "/Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS/Samples/Droplets"
There's one folder for Photoshop, and second for ImageReady.

  • font color=blue multiple applications in "open with" menu /font

I made a bootable backup last week with CCC.
The external drive kept turning on whenever I went into the "open with" menu. I ejected and unplugged it.
    That was yesterday.
Today, there are multiple copies of every application in the "open with" menu.
How can I get the menu back to normal settings?
    Thanks!

    Go here:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/resetlaunchservices.html
    And follow the instructions.
This should fix your machine but not your clone. I've never used CCC so I have no idea what might have caused that.

  • Removing Items from "Open With" Menu

I have installed Adobe CS2 awhile back on both my computers. Since I have have done so. Selecting the "Open with" on a selected image file brings up a list of maybe 40 options. Constrain to 200 Pixels and all this other crap. Honestly, it's screwed up a few of my files by accidentally clicking on them. The program will open.. run the script and close. I just want help on getting these items of my list. without removing the apps.
    Thanks alot!

Mike has the right of it. What I did was to make a list of all the droplets and store it in the droplets folder, then zip all of them except one I actually sometimes use. There is also a folder full of droplets for Image Ready. Should I ever want to see what's there for some batch processing I can consult the list, unzip, and use. Then toss.

  • Too many items in "Open With..." menu

    Gentlemen,
I have encountered the following problem. When i right-click on a file (of any kind) and choose the "Open With..." option, the list of available programs that is shown is just enormous, and filled with repeated program names, like this -
    Safari
    Safari
    Safari
    TextEdit
    TextEdit
    TextEdit
...and many, many more. It often doesn't even fit the screen, so sometimes I have to scroll this list to find the application I need. How can I shorten this list to make every application appear in it only once? I'd appreciate help of any kind; this is by way the only thing that does annoy me here in Mac OS.

You should be able to fix that by rebuilding the LaunchServices database.

  • Duplicate Items in Open With Menu

Whenever I right / command click to get the 'open with' dialog the list has duplicates of most applications in the list. This happened after I upgraded to Leopard. Any ideas how to fix it?

There are several possible reasons this happens.
One is that you have different versions of the apps on your drive, or that you have other drives mounted, each with a copy of the apps. Each instance you see of an app is actually a different one, & thus you have a choice of which one to launch.
Another is that the launch services database is corrupted & needs to be rebuilt. Several third party utilities make this easy to do without resorting to the command line. If you use one for this purpose, make sure it has been updated for Leopard compatibility. Two such utilities are Cocktail (shareware) & Onyx (freeware).

  • Open with contextual menu

My problem: When i select/highlight "Open with" option in the Finder Contextual Menu, then Finder quits. i.e. the open with menu doesn't even expand- just highlighting/hovering the cursor over it, causes Finder to crash.
This has been happening for quite some time.
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

The free Expander shouldn't have installed any contextual menu items. Look in the "Contextual Menu Items" folders in your "Library" folder, and in the one in "Library" at the top level of your disk. If there are any files there, try moving them out, then logout, then login, and see if you still have problems.

  • How do we add apps to the 'Open With' contextual menu?

After I updated to Mavericks, all of the apps, except the Apple ones, were blown away (eg. Word and Excel in my VM).
How do I put them back?

'Open With > Other' would not show the apps in my VM.  I tried.
I tried something different.  I left Word open in my Parallels (Vista) VM and ignored it for a while to see if Maverics would pick it up eventually.
    It did.
It seems like that it takes some time for Maverics to find the apps in a VM before we can use it in the 'Open With' menu.
