Multiple itunes (libraries) for multiple ipods

I have read the FAQ's in several places and my specific situation is not addressed so here goes...
I just got a new computer and when loading my itunes library/ipod and my wife's itunes library/ipod I would like to do so without setting up a second user account.
Is this possible?
(Basically I want 2 differnt itunes icons on the desktop that open to 2 different music libraries, each for our respective ipods)
Thanx

I think this is what you need. If this does not help you other suggestions can be made

  • Can you create different itunes libraries for different ipods?

Each member of my family has an Ipod; is there a way to create a library for each Ipod? Right now we are having to manually check each song / video each time we sync the different Ipods. There has to be an easier way.

In my opinion, it is easiest to sync separate playlists -- "Method Two" here:

I have an itunes account.  However, I need to copy music onto a different iPod than my own.  How do I do that?  Do I need to create a separate iTunes account for that iPod?

An account means an iTunes Store account which is an online service.  Do you mean that, or do you mean a library on a computer?
iOS devices can only be synced to one iTunes library at a time.  You can sync that iPod to your account but it will wipe everything currently on it.

If you use manual syncing, you can sync items from more than one iTunes library to your iPod. (You can sync iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad with only one iTunes library.) When manually managing content, you can add content from multiple libraries to your iPod or iPad. Even when manually managing music, some content may be available from only one library at time. This includes all content on iPhone and video content on iPod and iPad. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12113  and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1202
I could post another 2 pages of stuff trying to cover every possible scenario.  It would help if you let us know exactly what you want to do.  Are you trying to sync just a few songs (like giving them to a friend which is something iTunes is deliberately set up not to do)?

  • I want to amend the Itunes name for each IPOD we own. How is this done?

I want to amend the Itunes name for each IPOD we own. How is this done?

Do you mean the name of the iPod? For example "John's iPod touch"
If you have iOS 5 or later, you can change the name from "Settings --> General --> About. Tap on "Name" and enter a new name.
With iOS 4, connect the iPod to iTunes, and click the name for the iPod in iTunes in order to change it.

  • Multiple libraries for one ipod and match?

Ok, so... I've got about 1500 songs purchased via itunes, and own about 3500 CDs, which I'm in the process of adding to my library.  All but about 50 of the discs were already ripped years ago, and I'm just copying the backup mp3s onto my new external drive after the last one failed.  Anyhow, I just got itunes Match and I'm wondering if I made a mistake in doing so.  Is there a way to have songs from multiple libraries on my ipod?  Due to the sheer volume of music (and other thigns) I own, I'm wondering if I should just make a comedy library, a blues library, a synthpop library, a metal one, a rock & roll one, an oldies one and so on.  If I do that, will I be relegated to having to decide what style of music I want on my ipod at any given time, or is there a way for me to load different items from multiple libraries onto the thing?
I'm halfway tempted to just delete my entire library from itunes and just be SUPER picky about what tracks I add in order to be able to get under the 25K limit.  As is, right now I've got 21411 items in my library, over 20000 of which are in match, but it keeps crashing on step 3 right now.  As is, I already know I need to re-mp3 some of the discs since when I did them originally they were less than 96K (oddly, I'm finding it's mainly on my "oldies" discs like the American Graffiti soundtrack), and that doens't bug me, but the idea of having to go through song by song and add only what I want is one I'm not too fond of and that I'd like to avoid if at all possible.
I'm really digging match, but not so much now that I realized there's a hard limit to the number of songs available.  I don't think Apple is used to folks like me who live & breathe music and attend well over 100 concerts in the average year.
Thanks for anyone who's read all of my rambling, and any of y'all who can provide me a bit of guidance!
    -Ann

This would be making is WAY less difficult. This is a MUCH needed feature in iTunes that they should add. As a DJ I absolutely hate having all my music in one library. Certain genres, like Electronic music, deserve to be in their own library. I would like to be able to hit the Music icon on my iPod and have it ask me what library of music I would like to access.
This would allow siblings to share one iPod and not have to combine all of their music together. Or you could make a library of music with no explicicit music on it (and passcode it) so that you don't have to worry about kids having access to your explicit material if you let them use your iPod.
You can already make multiple libraries in iTunes, why not just add the obvious next step and be able to add multiple libraries onto one iPod.

  • Using iTunes 8, how to manage libraries for 2 ipods w/o duplicating files?

Is there any way to load all my music into one library, then manage what is put on each iPod, without having duplicate files that take up more disk space? I am using iTunes 8 for Windows. I have two iPods, an 8GB and a 16GB, so they hold different sets of songs. I tried creating a second Library and copying the songs I want on that iPod, but that creates an additional 8GB of used space on my PC. Plus I want to load ALL my CDs into iTunes and occasionally change out the selections on my iPod...

    Just use playlists.
I have two iphone and three ipods that sync to one itunes library. They each have different content.

  • Creating seperate libraries for seperate ipods

We have a couple ipods in family for adults. Purchased 2 ipod Touchs for kids for christmas. How do I keep the more explicite music from syncing to kids ipods. Can't figure out how to set up different libraries, and sync only those libraries. Don't want seperate iTunes accounts for the kids.

*Can't figure out how to set up different libraries, and sync only those libraries.*
To create or access a second (or more) library, hold down the Shift key in Windows when launching iTunes. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to the other Library.
Note: You can only have one Library open at a time and iTunes will default to the last library opened if you don't use the keyboard command to choose one. The new library will be empty until you add content to it. To get back to your original library you need to close iTunes and open it again while holding down the shift key, this time choose to open an existing library and navigate to its location. Multiple libraries can prove tricky when using multiple iPods, if you don't use the keyboard command you can risk syncing to the wrong library: Using multiple iTunes libraries -Windows

  • How create 3 libraries for 3 Ipods on the same XP with 1 loging

    Hi all
    I just purchased 3 Ipods 30Go.
I own only 1 XP SP2 DELL station with Itunes at 7.1 level.
I don't have any special account - logging
How can I create 3 diff. libraries ?
Starting Itunes with MAJ key on in :
    1 - in program mode
2 - with Itunes icon on the desk
    don't work fine.
Ilibs soft seems to be ok for that; what's APPLE & IPOD
    solution ?

If you are adding two or more iPods for your own use, just connect each iPod to your computer and follow the on screen instructions. It will update from your existing library. Depending on the size of your library and the type of iPod you choose you can have it update all songs and playlists, selected playlists only or you can manage it manually.
If the iPods belong to different people, there are basically two ways of using multiple iPods on a computer and these involve:
    a) Sharing a single iTunes library and or user account or
    b) Creating multiple user accounts.
Note: When you are sharing an iTunes library, you don't have to set each iPod to update in the same manner, you can mix and match from the options below as each iPod has it's own update settings
Sharing a Library and/or User Account
If you want to share the one library, you can set either or all of the iPods so that they only get updated with only certain playlists (you can update from more than one if you wish):
Loading songs onto iPod automatically - Windows
Choosing the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" allows you to create a playlist specifically for the iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used some other time if you choose. You can read more about playlists at these links:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
Or you can choose to update any or all of the iPods manually and just drag whatever content you want to them: Managing content manually on iPod
It's also possible to have multiple libraries in a single account. To create or access a second (or more) library, hold down the Option key (or Shift key in Windows) when launching iTunes 7. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to the other Library.
Note: You can only have one Library open at a time and iTunes will default to the last library opened if you don't use the keyboard command to choose one. This can prove tricky when using multiple iPods, if you don't use the keyboard command you can risk syncing to the wrong library:
    Using multiple iTunes libraries -Windows
    Separate User Accounts
Another option is to create a separate User account for each person on your PC or Mac. Different accounts by definition would give you completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one. The iPod can be set to update however the owner chooses, sync all, manual or sync specific playlists
I don't use Windows so I can't give you a step by step on that one, however I can point you to another web page which should help you out. You can read about Windows user accounts here:

  • Do I need 2 iTunes accts for 2 iPods?

I have 2 iPods, one for me and one for my son. Do I need 2 itunes accounts?

*How to use multiple iPods with one computer*
The Apple support document How to use multiple iPods with one computer suggests a number of ways. I use method two (Sync with selected playlists) with a slight twist. Rather than regular playlists I set the grouping field to indicate which users should receive which tracks and create smart playlists based on the content of this field.
    e.g.
"Alice's Tracks" is "Grouping contains Alice" + "Kind contains audio"
"Bob's Videos" is "Grouping contains Bob" + "Kind does not contain audio"
Tracks that both Alice & Bob want on their iPods have the grouping set to "Alice/Bob"
    etc.
I currently manage our family's five iPods using this system, each getting a different selection to suit their tastes and the capacity of their iPod. An advantage of using the grouping field is that it is stored in file tags (for non-wav audio files anyway) so that it is relatively easy to recreate the playlists should the iTunes library get trashed. Also useful if you move files about manually as playlist membership is preserved when you delete & re-import the tracks.

  • How to switch between different libraries for different iPods?

    Hi,
I succesfully created two separate iTunes libraries on my computer (windows XP) for the iPods of me and my girlfriend. But, how can we switch easily back and forth between the different libraries?
The suggested option on http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300432 'method three' and bullet '13' does not appear / work....
    Regards,
    Roy

    thanx for replying so fast.
    No problem, Roy. : - )
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you this time. : - (
i'd like to know how i can switch between libraries without closing down iTunes.
Unfortunately you can only choose your Library at startup. So the only way to switch Libraries is to close iTunes ...

  • Can I put two Itunes libraries on one ipod

Wondering if I can put my husband's itunes library onto my ipod, so that we won't need two ipods.

to do this you need one itunes library. I understand you have two iPods are they both syncing with hte same itunes library. If so just sync the all content onto one iPod if you have enough space. Some peope have a lot of music and video.
If you have two itunes libraries that you sync each ipod with then you need to merge them these are your options if itunes are on separate computers
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
If they are on the same computer but different logons then copy the music foler from one account to the other.
Once everything is in the same iTunes you may also need to Authorise the computer with the other persons Apple ID
Then you should be good to go

  • Can I import (MUSIC.wma) in my iTunes Library, for my iPod?

Can I import (MUSIC.wma) into iTunes for an iPod Touch? I know somethinig about formating that may just ignore the import, see my grandmother had got an iPod, and she not only want's her CD's on it, she just wan'ts to know if she can play her windows music collection, with the extention .wma  into iTunes . . . if any of you all know if it's possible without having to use any particular third party application please feel free to answer . .

I think so.  iTunes' help says that iTunes can convert WMA files to other formats. The iPod supports:
Audio formats supported: AAC (8 to 320 Kbps), Protected AAC (from iTunes Store), HE-AAC, MP3 (8 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, 4, Audible Enhanced Audio, AAX, and AAX+), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV

  • Can i have the same itunes acct for two ipods (one nano and one shuffle)?  the shuffle is new and i want to duplicate the music. how do i do this?

I have a nano that's a couple years old with an itunes acct.  Just got a shuffle and want to duplicate the playlist on the shuffle.  When I plug in the shuffle to the existing acct nothing happens.  How do I copy that music onto my shuffle.  thanks.

    Yes.
You can sync as many ipods/iphone/ipads as you like to one computer/library.  This has nothing to do with your issue.
Itunes does not "see" the ipod?
iPod shuffle (4th generation): Not seen in iTunes
iPod not recognized in iTunes and Mac desktop
    iPod not appearing in iTunes

  • To big Itunes library for my Ipod mini

I've got a problem. I just bought my Ipod mini and I'm a novice so I wonder if you need to create a "Library selection" as Itunes suggest when I plug my Ipod in to the computer? I thought I just might create playlists and ad them to my Ipod. My problem is that I haven't figured out how to get the playlists on to my Ipod.
    Please Help me...

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
    The option to
i Automatically update selected playlists only
on your iPod is one of it's least documented features.
Fortunately, it's fairly straightforward when you make your way to the iTunes Edit menu > Preferences > iPod tab.
There's a picture of what to expect towards the bottom of this page .
    Any further questions, post back.
