Multiple keyboards with Mainstage

I am currently using mainstage with my Roland A-30 midi keyboard through a yamaha usb/midi interface and it works fine.
I am wondering if I can also use a basic USB keyboard into my other USB connection on my macbook at the same time. So one keyboard will use one sound, and the other keyboard will use another sound.
Is this possible?

A channel strip listens to exactly ONE keyboard object. Not to a MIDI keyboard, an object in the workspace.
In the layout mode you can configure a keyboard object to only listen to certain MIDI events. Usually only they events that come from a specific MIDI keyboard (MIDI port and MIDI channel match). You can however e.g. ignore the channel or port for a keyboard object. Then this object might listen to multiple MIDI keyboards.
This is the trick used for the EVB3: one keyboard object that receives MIDI events from several MIDI keyboards.
Your EXS24 is listen to several keyboards, because you selected the EVB3 keyboard object as its input.
I hope this clarifies the "magic" behind the difference of a MIDI keyboard and a keyboard object.
BTW: There is one exception: if you have no keyboard in the workspace at all, the channel strip will still work: they listen to everything. Its like having a keyboard object with MIDI port and channel set to all/all.

  • Multiple Keyboards With Multiple Languages

    Hello,
I am working for a French company and need to use French keyboard all the time. I do however keep my "querty" keyboard plugged in as well, since "azerty" (the French official layout) is not my favorite.
I would like to know if there is a feature or programming/scripting solution, allowing Windows to automatically switch between languages depending on the keyboard from which we are inputting the text.
This way, instead of having to change the language every time I need to type a French mail, I would just pull out my French keyboard (comfortably located on the lower drawer of my desk) and start typing while Windows seemingly passes to the pre-configured
    language for that keyboard.
I am a J2EE developer with some .NET and Win32 knowledge so do not be afraid to go technical :)
Thank you very much for your attention.
    Best Regards,
    Alexander Kirilov

    Hi Alexander,
I have no idea of making it automatically when change a physical keyboard ,but we can set it by simply pressing “Ctrl +0” to change the language .
    Control Panel \All Control Panel Items\Region and Language\Keyboards and Languages\Change keyboards\General
Add the French language here and set the keyboard for it ,and then set a hot keys for it (for example “Ctrl +0” ).Now we can easily switch to French by pressing “Ctrl +0” when we plug in our physical keyboard.
    Best regards

  • How do I use multiple keyboards in mainstage

Sorry if this is silly but- how can I designate a patch to be played from keyboard 1 transmitting on midi channel 1 and at the same time have keyboard 2 transmitting on midi channel 2 playing a different patch. I see no reference in the manual about using more than one input source (in this case more than one keyboard)

So sorry everyone- I've got it. I should have researched the forum first. Still-not explained well in the manuals IMO.

  • I have a serious (and bizarre!) issue with my novation impulse (Although i've tried it with two other keyboards and i still have the same problem) and its compatibility with mainstage 3

i have a serious (and bizarre!) issue with my novation impulse (Although i've tried it with two other keyboards and i still have the same problem) and its compatibility with mainstage 3.
the problem is best explained on the following one - page thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3951518?start=0&tstart=0
(Clearly i'm not alone in this problem, although i think i figured out what's going wrong a little more than he did...read on!)
his solution, to put mainstage in jump mode, is very unsatisfactory to me, as it bounces all of a sudden to drastically different settings.
basically, my analysis is that my controller is NOT receiving MIDI date from mainstage.  in other words, mainstage knows what my controller is doing, but my controller doens't know what mainstage is doing.
let's say i turn the knob all the way to the right ... 127...and the virtual fader goes to the right like it's supposed to.
now...next...let's say i change to a different patch, where that same VIRTUAL fader is not at the max clockwise position..maybe it's only at 1pm.  now when i turn the physical knob to the RIGHT, the midi data is still at 127 on the controller!  it didn't "reset" to sync up with the new level (say 80 or so) setting on the new patch.  so i can't increase that new setting of 80 by continuing to turn the knob to the right.  i have to turn it all the way to zero,...and then continue PAST zero until the controller thinks that IT is at 0...at that point the controller and mainstage are in agreement, and things work fine....so bascially, the keyboard thinks the level is at max...but mainstage thinks the level is at 1pm.
i am using Logic 9, and i have a macbook pro 2.9 Ghz I7 with 8 gigs of memory and OS X 10.8.4

    Hi Josh,
Thanks for taking the time to contact us here a Novation for technical support. Lets continue to correspond via email so we can get your issue resolved.

  • Can I use my iPad 2 with Mainstage 2 as a mixing surface for my keyboard rig?

How do I use ipad2 with mainstage as a mixing surface for my keyboard rig?

    Hi Capp 543:
I don't really use it any more live, mainly because I use my iPad for reading music and don't want to switch around apps. I'm not part of the company, but I'll try.
IMO the iRig manual is way way too simplistic.
I am attaching some jpeg's of what helped me solve it, though it was tough. If it doesn't open, search Audio Midi Setup help for "sharing midi data over a network". You have to create a wireless session using Audio/Midi setup, OR create an "ad hoc" network using bluetooth if there's no wi-fi (another set of problems...). This may be your issue. There are a few things beyond getting the wireless network appearing that you have to do, that's why I'm suggesting this even though you did it, or a part of it.
    In particular:
"Anyone" has to be set as who can connect to me in the lower left of the wireless midi setup screen, and
First get everything else ready, meaning the iPad connecting, THEN LiveRig has to be launched from closed, meaning do an icon hold and close in down iPad, then open it up for it to connect, when everything else is ready. for some reason that helped me.
In MainStage, you of course need to go to the MainStage #1 Setup screen, drag in sliders, then "learn" them to the LiveRig, which should now be seen when you click "learn" and move a Liverig slider. I have a vague recollection about not seeing iRig in the MainStage #1 top left device window, but then   going into the drop-down menu there where the device shoudl be, selecting it, then learning the sliders. Then in the #2 Edit window you assign the sliders etc.
I would suggest first connecting it via midi wires and getting it to work, which will help you decide if a problem is in the wi-fi or somewhere else when you go to connect it up with wi-fi. You'd need the Apple Camera Connection kit adaptor. I myself would alway run it via midi if I'm playing live, too many unknowns with unknown networks.
    Hope that helps.

  • Yamaha Mo'8 live keyboard rig with MainStage

    Hi, guys.
For most gigs, I use a Yamaha Mo'8 whose sounds are perfectly fine for most uses, but I have an important gig coming up in February next year where I would like to harness MainStage.  Here is the equipment I would like to use.
    - Yamaha Mo'8: MIDI controller and 2nd sound source in case something goes awry.
    - MBP running MainStage plus NI Komplete 8 Ultimate, Spectrasonics Omnisphere and Trilian.
    - OWC hard drive enclosure running 2 TB Western digital 7200 hard drive.
    - Apogee Duet 2
I'm not sure what my stand is, so unless I know what make and model my stand is, I wouldn't be able to get a laptop extension for it.  It's important that the laptop has to be very close to my eyes because I'm partially blind.  If anyone can think of a good setup for mounting the laptop plus Duet and hard drive, please let me know.
In regards to safety, should I have a spare set of audio leads plugged in to the Mo' 8 that I can bring up just in case the computer goes down for some reason?
    Thanks,
    Damian.

I've been using a MacBook Air for keyboard performance with Mainstage for a few years now. I use the ES1, ES2, an EXS24, often along with Massive and Absynth from Native Instruments. I often use Guitar Rig on the channel strips as well, not to mention Space Designer and other Logic effects.
My air has 4 GB of RAM. And I've never had any problem.
The Air is great, because it's about a kilogram lighter than my old MacBook Pro, and it performs just as well. It also boots really quickly, which is a bonus.

  • Modifier keys with multiple keyboards / keypads

I've got a weird one. I'm running 10.6.2 on a Mini with a Kinesis Freestyle Mac keyboard. I also just got an Ergodex DX1 input system with the Keyjack Mac software. It's amazingly cool, but there's an issue that the company says is an OSX bug/feature: the modifier keys on my main keyboard don't affect keys I've programmed on the DX1. For example, I have keys programmed as the cursor keys. However, I can't get cmd-up, shift-up, etc, using the Kinesis command and shift keys.
This is a pain and required me to waste the limited DX1 keys to have its own modifiers. Is there some way around this? I've read many threads about weird behavior with modifier keys and multiple keyboards, but haven't seen this specific issue.
    Thanks for any help!
    David

Something similar was asked before where the person wanted to use multiple keyboards ("standard" keyboards, but one for each hand.) It was found that the modifier keys worked only for that device. (e.g.: shift on left keyboard did not affect shift status on right keyboard.) It appears to be a limitation with most modifier keys on any keyboard, PCs included. The way most keyboards work, (at least most USB keyboards,) a code is sent with the appropriate "letter", not which key(s) are press. IOW, there's a code for "s" and "S", but not "shift-and-s". Unlike Caps Lock, the Command key is more like the shift, control, option keys, which do not have separate "codes" of their own.
So unless someone else has some other idea to try, I think you're out of luck.

  • How do you use the same wireless keyboard with multiple devices?

My apologies in advance if this question has been answered previously.  There was nothing in the owner's manual (for the keyboard) that answered this.  I did do a rough search that did not yield an answer to this:
I have one wireless keyboard I am using with my Macbook Pro.  I understand this keyboard can also be used as an input device for my Apple TV and my iPhone - both of which I currently own.
And although I am able to use the keyboard with those devices, I am forced to "forget this device" after having used it on either the Apple TV or my iPhone so that I can use it on my MacBook Pro.  Is there any combination of keys that one can press on the keyboard that would cycle through my three devices?  As it is right now, if I don't "forget the device" on my secondary units, it somehow defaults to a peripheral OTHER than my MacBook Pro and I'd like for it to always default to my computer.
    Thank you for any information/advice.

I have a large number of photos imported into iPhoto with the dates wrong.  How can I adjust multiple photos (with varying dates) to the same, correct, date?

If I understand you correctly, when you enter a date in the Adjust Date and Time window, the picture does not update with the date you enter.  If that is the case then something is wrong with iPhoto or your perhaps your library.
How large a date change are you putting in?  iPhoto currently has an issue with date changes beyond about 60 years at a time.  If the difference between the current date on the image and the date you are entering is beyond that range that may explain why this is not working.
If that is not the case:
Remove the following to the trash and restart the computer and try again:
    Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.iphoto
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.iPhoto (There may be more than one. Remove them all.)
---NOTE: to get to the "home > library" hold down option on the keyboard and click on "Go" > "Library" while in the Finder.
    Let me know the results.

  • Dual keyboards with Snow Leopard

This may seem unconventional, but I prefer to use two keyboards with my computers, one for each hand. It's a far more versatile solution then traditional ergonomic keyboards, and allows me to use the Apple keyboards, which I've found to be very good keyboards.
Right now I have two keyboards hooked up to my MacBook, one of the full-length Apple keyboards, the other the smaller Apple keyboard without a number pad. Both are USB. The problem I'm running into is that modifier keys don't affect key presses on the other keyboard. That is, when I press shift on one keyboard, it activates only on that keyboard, not the other. Same goes for control, command option and even caps-lock. If I have to, I'll eventually adapt, but it'd be nice if there was a way to make those keys work across all keyboards (including the built-in one).
I've dug through the control panel and searched online pretty extensively, but since there are so few people using more then one keyboard with their computer, that I haven't been able to find any solutions for Mac OS (there are a few for Linux). If anyone has any ideas, I'd really appreciate it.

I believe your issue is because the data that gets sent out is a "keystroke", not "this combination of keys". Think of it as sending "s" vs "S", not "shift-s". A modifier key has to "modify" some other key, but is not a "keystroke" itself.
That said, perhaps you could use Sticky Keys (in Universal Access Preferences.) This would allow you to have a key "held down". I haven't tried it with multiple keyboards, but it's worth a shot.
BTW, I do use multiple keyboards: a Mac keyboard and old "clicky" IBM PS/2 keyboard (with a USB adapter.) But not for each hand. I find that I can type quicker and more accurately on the "clicky", so I do most of my word processing on that. Beyond that, I have a Belkin Nostromo for my left hand for gaming and other apps (e.g.: scrolling in web pages) but obviously not for typing. So I do sympathize with your desire for using both hands, (which is why I got the Nostromo) But other than old multiplayer games and virtual machines, I haven't heard of anyone using multiple keyboards simultaneously.

I already have multiple devices and by far I like my iPad the most over laptops and the iPad. That including checking out my friends MacBook Air.
The difference for me is the touch interface on the screen itself for things that do not require a lot of typing. For me, the iPad is more "magical" than anything else I've used.
Again, I do appreciate your answers but you don't know my situation. Not everything is as it is perceived without knowing me and what I have to go through.

  • Two keyboards into Mainstage

    Hey Guys!!!
    I've a little problem with Mainstage 2 (Version 2.2.2.).
I've two keyboards (Korg and Roland) + MidiMerge Box 2x2 and I want use the Mainstage internal sound with two device (Korg  Roland).
    This is my cable set:
    MIDI out KORG-->MIDI In MERGE
    MIDI out ROLAND-->MIDI In MERGE
    MIDI out MERGE-->"MIDI In" MAC
Is there a parameter in the "Layout" where i can set Multi-timbral Midi Channel?
    Sorry for my poor english!!!!

There's a better way to do it. Instead of using a MIDI merge, connect both keyboards directly to the Mac. Then each keyboard will have its own set of 16 MIDI channels.

  • Yamaha S08 keyboard with USB not interacting with Logic

I just bought a used Yamaha S08 88 key weighted keyboard and I can't seem to get the key presses to register in Logic 8 or Mainstage. It has a USB port on the back which I've plugged into my Macbook Pro running 10.4.10 and when I open up the preferences panel in Mainstage it recognizes that 1 MIDI device is connected but nothing happens when I press the keys. I've downloaded and installed the USB drivers from Yamaha (Yamaha USB-MIDI v1.1.0) and when I open up the Yamaha USB-MIDI Patch preferences pane it explicitly shows that a Yamaha S08 is plugged in (it disappears when I unplug the usb cable). I plugged in my M-Audio usb keyboard with the same cable just to make sure both the cable and programs were working and it worked right away. Any ideas on why I can't seem to get the Yamaha up and running?

I figured it out - I had to dig into some sub menus of the keyboard to set USB as the midi out rather than the midi ports.

  • Kontrol 49 Keyboard and Mainstage

I have a problem for my keyboard to work with mainstage.
I hit the keys but it is not properly transmitted to the software.
Once I found the solution with a "learn" button but I cannot find it anymore...

There's a learn button in Layout mode that you use to make the connection between controls in the Mainstage workspace and your MIDI controller. So you'd select the Mainstage object, hit the Learn button on the left (or use Cmd+L) then move the control on your hardware.
