Multiple layers in 32 bit depth PSD

Hi there,
Am I missing something, or can't I have multiple layers in a PSD file when working in 32 bit mode? (In particular, I am using CS5).
I am working on a feature to save image data to PSD and would, if possible, prefer to be able to store the individual layers in 32 bit depth.
Thank you in advance

Hi layeredtargets,
You should be able to have and save layered files in documents that are 32 bits/channel in cs5.
If the documents are over a certain size then you would have to save as a .psb file and some
things like certain adjustment layers and filters are not available in the 32 bits/channel mode.
Are you trying to put the individual layers into separate files?

  • PSD keeps saving image as 32 bit depth (not 24)

I may be using some incorrect terminology/calculations.
I have some third-party presentation software that requires all images be 8-bit. So I used Photoshop for all photo editing and made sure my PSDs were 8-bit before exporting stills (PNGs) for my presentation. 50+ PNGs were successfully created this way, but i'm having problems with a single file. When I open the correct files in Windwos Pic/Fax View, right click, show properties, go to Summery (advanaced), all the correct files have a bit depth listed as 24.
My problematic PSD says it's in 8-bit, but the PNGs that I create from it are consistently listed as having 32 bit depth in Windows Pic/Fax View. As a test I exported other images formats (TIFFs, JPEGs, etc...) and they all came out as 32 bit depth. How do I fix this? I tried opening the PSD, saving as different name, switching to 16-bit and then back to 8-bit, still didn't work.

I don't think I have an alpha channel. The workflow to create this image is identical to all other images (none of them have alphas). Any way I can check whether an alpha inadvertently was included?
Thanks for also explaining the math behind 8 bit -> 24 bit lol.

  • Can an item of 1 Bit depth have layers?

Can an item of 1 Bit depth have layers which can be copied or duplicated.  My 1 Bit item is partially locked and the layer menu does not permit any operations.

Yes. One bit binary is either on/off = black/white.

  • Importing PSD as multiple layers

Hi!  Nearly every time I try to import a PSD document as multiple layers, Motion merges the layers on import, which renders the project useless.  Anyone can help?

When you import a PSD, you need to click on it from the File Browser and *drag* it into your project (on the canvas is easiest, or into the layers pane.) Hold the mouse button down until a popup menu appears. You will be offered the choice of any of the individual PSD layers (with Choose Layer if you have a lot of layers) OR to import all layers OR import merged.
If you have layer styles in PS, you'll need to rasterize those layers first (or just convert them to Smart Objects.)

  • How to view resolution (ppi/dpi) and bit depth of an image

    Hello,
how can I check the native resolution (ppi/dpi) and bit depth of my image files (jpeg, dng and pef)?
If it is not possible in lighroom, is there a free app for Mac that makes this possible?
    Thank you in advance!

I have used several different cameras, which probably have different native bit depths. I assume that Lr converts all RAW files to 16 bits, but the original/native bit depth still affects the quality, right? Therefore, it would be nice to be able to check the native bit depth of an image and e.g. compare it to an image with a different native bit depth.....
I know a little bit of detective work would solve the issue, but it
would be more convenient to be able to view native bit depth in
Lightroom, especially when dealing with multiple cameras, some of which
might have the option to use different bit depths, which would make the
    matter significantly harder.
    This
issue is certainly not critical and doesn't fit into my actual
workflow. As I stated in a previous post, I am simply curious and wan't
to learn, and I believe that being able to compare images with different
bit depths conveniently would be beneficial to my learning process.
    Anyway,
I was simply checking if somebody happened to know a way to view bit
depth in Lr4, but I take it that it is not possible, and I can certainly
    live with that.
Check the specifications of your camera to know at what bit depth it writes Raw files. If you have a camera in which the Raw bit depth can be changed the setting will probably be recorded in a section of the metadata called the Maker Notes (I don't believe the EXIF standard includes a field for this information). At any rate, LR displays only a small percentage of the EXIF data (only the most relevant fields) and none of the Maker Notes. To see a fuller elucidation of the metadata you will need a comprehensive EXIF reader like ExifTool.
However, the choices nowadays are usually 12 bit or 14 bit. I can assure you that you cannot visually see any difference between them, because both depths provide a multiplicity of possible tonal levels that is far beyond the limits of human vision - 4,096 levels for 12 bit and 16,384 for 14 bit. Even an 8 bit image with its (seemingly) paltry 256 possible levels is beyond the roughly 200 levels the eye can perceive. And as has been said, LR's internal calculations are done to 16 bit precision no matter what the input depth (although your monitor is probably not displaying the previews at more than 8 bit depth) and at export the RGB image can be written to a tiff or psd in 16 bit notation. The greater depth of 14 bit Raws can possibly (although not necessarily) act as a vehicle for greater DR which might be discerned as less noise in the darkest shadows, but this is not guaranteed and applies to only a few cameras.

  • Custom keyboard shortcuts and editing multiple layers in Flash CS4

    Hi, all -
CS3 -> CS4 transition newb here who's getting increasingly frustrated with the new motion tweens; however, for this project, I'm working in a 3D space and require using them, so I'm dealing with this bit by painful bit. I found the tip about Split Motion, but first question: how do you apply Split Motion across several layers at the same time? I have six different tweens, and in CS3, I used to be able to shift-click or click-drag across frames and apply a command to all of them (for example, hit F5 to add frames), but Split Motion is requiring me to right-click on each and every layer. This is really laborious, and I worry about future animations that might be more complex.
Similarly, I tend to add custom keyboard shortcuts to each of my Flash versions for commands I use frequently and don't want to right-click a menu for (such as "add motion tween") - however, I can't seem to find where to create a custom shortcut for either that, or Split Motion.
Any and all help would be appreciated as I muddle through this. Honestly, guys, I WANT to like the new version and there's so many added features, but it's hampering my workflow so bad I want to pummel it with sticks.

    Hey there,
I definitely hear you about Split Motion. There is an enhancement request for supporting multiple layers, and adding it as a keyboard shortcut. The first one is tricky, but the second one is not. I think there was hope that splitting motions wouldn't be necessary much (especially since you have to be careful when doing so when eases are involved), which is why the eventual need for more functionality related to split motion was realized a bit late in the schedule.
Now regarding other operations, such as you mentioned F5 to insert frames - that and other operations (inserting certain types of property keyframes, F6, and so on) work just fine.
You can apply a shortcut to Create Motion Tween in the custom keyboard shortcut dialog.  Not all operations in the program are available though (most context menu items aren't), which is why unfortunately why we don't see Split Motion yet.
It might be possible to avoid Split Motion though with another workflow. What are you using the feature for?  Just curious in case I can help.
    Jen.

  • How to Apply adjustment layers to multiple layers that have different blending modes ...

How to Apply adjustment layers to multiple layers that have different blending modes  and keep the colours the same as the adjusment done?
I work in Animation painting Backgrounds.  My files are sometimes upwards to 200+ layers.
I will use adjustment layers to quickly balance colours and constrast on top of those many many layers.
The only way that I know of how to apply adjustment layers it to every single layer  ( by applying I mean I need to get rid of the adjustment layers because we cant use them in production but i need the new colours be applied to all layers underneath ) in a psd is to manually do it By duplicating the adjusment layer 200+ times and  then merging each layer to one of those adjustment layers so that that layer can take the adjustment layers effect permanently.
The issue is that Within Those 200 layers I have some layers set to Multiply or OVERLAY.    IT obviously wont apply the adjustment layer properly to those layers because those layer blend mode affect the layers under them. The colour wont be the same anymore in the spots that had the multiply blended mode.
HEres an example of a simple File.  to show what i mean.
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3408266/ball%20layers.jpg
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3408266/ball.psd
I have 2 adjustment layers up top.  I need to get rid of them by applying them to each layer! I cannot merge any of the layers. We need all those layers for production.
I can apply the adjustment layers manually and this works GREAT for all Layers set to normal.  THey take on the colour change just FINE.
However, The issue is that layer 6 and layer 4 are both set to mutiply and this screws up the colour once i apply the adjustment layers to each layer manually...
How can i apply my adjustment layers to a file like this with some layers being set to multiply while keeping the layers exactly the same configuration  and The new colour taking efffect exactly how i looks before i apply the adjustment layers?
Now the simple solution is to merge the multiply layers to the layer that it affects HOWEVER I NEED those multiply layers to be seperate!
I'm assuming what I want to do is impossible? Hope this isnt confusing.  As far as i know its impossible to do what I want it to do.  but just wanted to ask and see.
I would REALLY REALLY love to talk to a adobe programmer/ technician/pro working at adobe about this.  Theres just no way to get in touch with anyone... =(
    any thoughts ?

Sure... if you want to put it that way. Either way its not the desirable outcome.
its just frustrating that theres no way to apply adjustment layers to hundreds of layers while keeping them in the same configuration ( blendmodes,  layer order ,  without merging)  while keeping the same end result.
works great if all your layers are set to normal though..    But I really need to keep shadow layers seperately and be able to adjust on the fly aswell as apply those adjusment to all my layers.
I suppose that just isnt possible.   I understand the math required for this would be tremendous/ complicated if something like this would ever be implemented.  Would be nice if adobe could come up with some solution to this.  Its really a huge issue in my work flow and theres no alternatives.    How else can I adjust colours to 100+ layers  with a few clicks that lets me play around the the adjustment until im happy with the outcome.    Really wish i could adjust and the quickly apply that adjustment to all my layers regardless of blend mode.   LIke If the Layers with blendmode could somehow take the properties of the adjustment layer and keep adjusting those layers undereathe on top of that blended mode that its doing...

  • Maximum Bit Depth /Maximum Render Quality  Questions

    Maximum Bit Depth
If my project contains high-bit-depth assets generated by high-definition camcorders, I was told to select Maximum Bit Depth because Adobe Premiere Pro uses all the color information in these assets when processing effects or generating preview files. I'm capturing HDV using the Matrox RTX-2 Hardware in Matrox AVI format.
When I finally export my project using Adobe Media Encoder CS4, will selecting Maximum Bit Depth provide better color resolution once I post to Blu-ray format?
    Maximum Render Quality
I was told that by using Maximum Render Quality, I maintain sharp detail when scaling from large formats to smaller formats, or from high-definition to standard-definition formats as well as maximizes the quality of motion in rendered clips and sequences. It also renders moving assets more sharply. It's my understanding that at maximum quality, rendering takes more time, and uses more RAM than at the default normal quality. I'm running Vista 64 Bit with 8 GIGs of RAM so I'm hoping to take advantage of this feature.
Will this also help to improve better resolution when I finally export my project using Adobe Media Encoder CS4 and post to Blu-ray format?
Does it look like I have the specs to handle Maximum Bit Depth and Maximum Render Quality when creating a new HDV project with the support of the Matrox RTX 2 Hardware capturing in Matrox AVI format? See Below Specs.

Just some details that i find useful on maximum render depth
You really need it even with 8bit source files, when using heavy grading/multiple curves/vignettes. If after grading you see banding, go to sequence > sequence settings from the top menu and check "maximum bit depth (ignore the performance popup), then check again your preview (it will change in a second) to see if banding is still present in 32bit mode. If no banding, you must check it when exporting, if  banding is still there, change your grading, then uncheck it to continue with editing.
Unfortunately Maximum bit depth exporting is extremely time-consuming, but can really SAVE YOUR DAY when facing artifacts after heavy grading, by completely or almost completely eliminating banding and other unwanted color distortions.
Use it only for either small previews or the really final output.
    Best Regards.

  • How To Do Frame animation w/ Multiple Layers Per Frame

So I'm working on an 8-bit character template as game art. I've got multiple layers (ie: Hat Apparel, Body, Pants, Shirt, Neck Apparel, Mouth Apparel). I want all of these to be animated in their own layers. Is there a way to do that? I have all of the layers  inside a group but I couldn't figure out a way to have a group in a frame. It would only take single layers per frame. I am not very advanced at Photoshop, I've dabbled but work more on the 3d/programming side of game design so sorry in advance if I over-complicate this

For example this animation was made with two layer.  The top layer the jjmack linked letters has a layer mask that is not linked to the layers content. The other layer is the background layer. The first frame I created was both layers visible with the jjmack layers content positioned off canvas upper left and the second frame I created was both layers visible with the jjmack layer content lower and off canvas to the right. I had Photoshop generate all the frames tween them.

  • Simultaneously select multiple layers and sublayers

    Hello
I am having to select multiple layers and their sublayers in Illustrator 2014, but taking the procedure described in the post below only lets you select multiple "main layers" with the sublayers left unselected.
Re: Is it possible to select multiple layers by selecting first and last layers?
Would someone please explain how both layers and sublayers can be selected in the Layers panel?
Getting more and more confused about the layer control in Illustrator..
    Thank you in advance,
    Ead

    Ead,
I believe it is a matter of implicit selection, which may be a bit diconcerting.
    You may try this:
    1) Create a (small) number of layers with sublayers (or use the set yopu have), and tick Paste Remembers Layers;
    2) ShiftClick first and last (relevant) and Ctrl/Cmd+C;
    3) Create a new document and Ctrl/Cmd+F.
Is anything missing (obviously, everything copied has been selected)?

  • Filter / Sort by Bit Depth? (16 bit vs 8 bit)

I am looking for a way to use the Filter panel to sort/filter results by bit depth (16 bit vs 8 bit images) - is there a way to do this Bridge CS4? I have looked in every part of the sorting mechnisms and can't find a way. Am I missing something?

Unfortunately there is no such way in the filter panel, it might be a good
feature request, maybe you can add that using the link at the main page on
    this forum.
In the meantime there are 2 possible workarounds. Regarding the fact that a
16 bit is twice the size of an 8 bit you might want to use the sort by size
criterion in the Path Bar but when having different source files or layered
files that might not always be sufficient.
If you use the find command (cmd+F / or menu Edit-Find) you can select the
find by bit depth option. Also select the option to equal and use either the
    number 8 or 16.

  • MULTIPLE place image import...& "save as.." multiple layers to multipage PDF

    Hello,
just some suggestions I`d like to see to speed up my set up and output..
i`d like to import multiple placed images into illustrator CS4. So open dialogue box place, and multiple select images for placing.
    regards output save as...
Can we output multiple layers  into a single PDF in illustrator?  Or multiple layers into single JPEGS  from illustrator with one command instead of individually saving out  each layer... would be a huge time saver for me.I create different artworks on different layers..
Currently  I output each completed layer individually and then right click those  outputted jpegs in their output folder and choose "combine supported  files into acrobat..." to make a single acrobat file..i`d like to do this right in the illustrator "save for PDF" dialogue box. Adding  something in the Save for PDF output dialogue box to save layers to one PDF as multiple pages would be a helpful time saver..
I`d  also like to be able to CTRL click multiple layers and go " save as..."  only those layers get saved out...

, bridge -FILE/PLACE into ai, goes to separate layers in AI as placed.
in PS, bridge/tools/ps/load files into ps layers.. CS4.
just using right click in explorer on individual PDF docs from layers saved from PS to combine to PDF. but cannot output multiple pds from layers in AI in CS4.

  • How to multiple layers in the MAP web item?

    Hi experts,
I'm working on a demo with BWGIS. I encounter several problems with the MAP web item.
    My demo:
QA results visualized on global (region object - e.g. Europe, Asia), country (country object) and plant level. Use geo-drilldown to navigate into the lower layers functionality to get from the global view to the countries within one region and plants within one country.
    My settings:
Region is a static geo-characteristic. For region I used the cont200.shp file. Also country is a static geo-characteristic, here I used cntry200.shp. For test I used ARCGIS to draw (points) some example plants in the country shape file. I uploaded this shape file to the plant object (also static).
    My success:
I'm able to display the QA results in a separate global or country view within the 3.x Web template.
    My problems:
    A) The map web item in 7.0 does not display any data: it looks like no link can be made between the query result and graphic although we installed the latest IGS.
    B) I'm not able to drilldown from a global view to the countries within one region (doubleclick on one region in global view) within the 3.x Analyzer and 3.x Web template.
My first question is about the concept of BWGIS:
    1) I want to use geo-drilldown (double-click) to navigate to the lower layers. For example in the global view I see only the QA result per region (shape file of region object) -> doubleclick on Europe, I expect to zoom in to Europe and see the QA results for all the countries in Europe (shape file of country object). How do I modell this in the web application designer?
alt. 1a: 1 map – 1 layer - 1 dataprovider - underneath 1 query with region and country in the row is not allowed, so how to navigate between the two geo-relevant objects?
alt. 1b: 1 map - 2 layers (2 shape files) - 2 dataproviders - 2 queries, one with QA result per region and one per country -> in that case both will be displayed at the same time, is not what I want. How to navigate between the two layers?
    alt. other ?
    2) I know how to make maps with multiple layers in ARCGIS, but do I need this for BWGIS, because one layer is one shape file? So do multiple layers in the map web item correspond to multiple layers in a ESRI ArcMap Document.
    More specific questions:
    3) Is there a lot of experience with the map web item in 7.0, documentation and working examples? Are there known problems (I can't find anything in sap notes). Is it better to still use the 3.5 Web Application Designer for this?
    4) There is very little information on SAP help, SDN and other forums about BEx Map and moreover the MAP web item. Does anyone have more documentation for me?
    Thanks in advance.
    With kind regards,
    Rick Stoll

    Hi Rick,
I am working on the same topic. I am strongly interessted in solutions to your open questions, that you pulled forward in the past.
    Did you make any progress?
    Thanks in advance and regards

  • How to change blending mode on multiple layers at the same time

I'm using CS5. I have a document with about 70 layers. I would like to change the blending mode to "lighten" for each layer. Is there an easy way to do this?

Photoshop doesn't allow multiple layer editing. That's why the styles are grayed out. Only 1 layer at a time.
What version are you talking about?
CS5 definitely let’s one apply a Style to multiple Layers.
rfcommagere, I don’t know how to make it much clearer:
    • set the Blending Mode on one Layer
    • with that Layer selected create a Style with »Include Layer Blending Options« checked
    • select all other Layers that should have that Blending Mode
    • click the Style in the Styles Panel

  • How to share the same mask across multiple layers?

Say one needs multiple layers, one above another, to share the same layer mask. Is there any smart way to tell all those layers they have to use the same mask? As opposed to copying the same mask into all layers. The latter approach has the disadvantage that, when you need to change the mask, you need to copy it again into all layers that must share it.
    Thank you.

Put the Layers in a Set and apply the mask to that.
