Multiple libraries/computers

I have one library at work that is my "master". Every couple of weeks, in order to keep my home library up to date, I would copy the "itunes library" file to my work external hard drive and replace all music at my home external from that hard drive and then replace my home "itunes library" file with the one from work...whew! My question - now that the ipod can update multiple libraries with new music, if under the same account, is it possible to change my home library file now without wiping out all playlists created so that I can use the ipod for this tedious chore? The problem is that the ipod thinks both computers (home and work) are the same since the library file is/was the same. Plese, Anyone? Pretty please??!!!
G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I now know it is only for itunes store purchases. Nevermind

  • ITunes match with multiple libraries

I can't seem to find a satisfactory answer to this.  Namely, how does iTunes Match treat multiple libraries on the same Mac.  In my case, I spent a lot of time segregating my music.  Thus, I have a rock library, a classical library, an instrumental (Windham Hill and Narada) library, an ambient recording library.  It makes sense to me to do this rather that dump everything into one pot.  That way, I can load a Touch with a specific library and don't have to create a zillion playlists.  Using the same iTunes login, how will Match treat these different libraries?  Will it only concern itself with what it finds in the currently open library?  How will it treat different iPod Touches that are linked to a specific library?  Will it want to push the wrong music to a Touch? Would appreciate any thoughts.

One person sets up Match on their computer using the iTunes account.  Uploads everything to match.
I would recommend waiting until that person is done, and do computers one at a time.  No particular reason, just seems sensible.
Next person sets up match using same iTunes account details.  Uploads their stuff.  They will then see everything the previous user put into the system, unless you select "Hide music not on this computer" in the view menu.  Previous user will now see their stuff too.
    Rinse and repeat.
This is how it worked with my multiple machines anyway...  As long as every computer uses the same iTunes account for the store, you all get access to the same Match account.

  • TS2972 I have multiple libraries on the "same computer" with two different desktops, can't I share between two libraries on the same computer?

I'm trying to use home sharing to share content between libraries so some of the combined content in a given library, can be synced to an ipad.   Instad of having mulitple computers, i have multiple libraries on the same computer using two desktops.  How do I share within the same computer?

iTunes must be running for home sharing to work.  There is no way to have home sharing running simultaniously for two users on the same computer.
Simply add the media files using File > Add File/Folder option in iTunes.

  • I have multiple libraries on the SAME computer.

I have multiple libraries on the SAME computer. How can I share these libraries? I do not see the SHARED tab when i open iTunes. Where is this tab?

home sharing works between two or more computers on the same LAN.
if you're talking about libraries on multiple user accounts on the same computer, peruse how to share music between different accounts on a single computer.
if you mean you're working with multiple libraries on the same user account, check out PowerTunes or iTunes Library Manager.

  • Multiple Libraries for Video running at the same time on one PC

    Hi Everyone -
I want to clarify this is for VIDEO files, not music for my 6 ATV's on the network.
Problem: I have well over 1000 VIDEOS in my iTunes Library, and I am wanting to have multiple libraries availible at the same time; not just whichever the computer has open.
We have several atv's on the network and I would like to take my video organization one step further; instead of scrolling forever in the atv menus for the video you want; I could make several libraries all availible at the same time.
    Such as:
    Kids Library
    Workout Library
    Parents Library
    etc
This in turn would shrink the primary library and have less videos to sort by.  I know how to create the Libraries, I just dont know how to have them all running at the same time.
    Infastructure:
Windows 7 Ultimate with Drobo B800FS (16TB of storage) all connected to Cisco 3660 Gig switch with multiple atv's hardwired back.

iTunes can only open one library at a time. If you have multiple computers, or virtual machines, each could be serving a different library.

  • Multiple libraries, Pbook/Pmac, advice for management & updating please.

    Hi Everyone,
I travel frequently, and am looking for suggestions to keep all my iPhoto libraries up to date. I currently have a g5, Powerbook, and Mini.
I just upgraded to iPhoto 6 and I have several thousand photos on my Dual g5. I just came back with 1000 more from my diving trip. The problem is, they are on my Powerbook, and taking up alot of space on the relatively small hard drive. I managed to work through the rough upgrade from 5 to 6, and now I need some more help...
    1) What is your advice for managing multiple libraries of photos.
    2) What is the best way to transfer the iphoto pics (and movies) to my desktop, which of course has the larger storage capacity, after travelling...
    Thanks,

    Jason:
There are several different approaches to what you want to do. Let me just throw out a couple that I'm familiar with.
To get the new photos from your PB to your G5 and maintain any keywords, and other organization effort you put into them, you'll need the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager. It will allow you to merge libraries or copy between libraries and maintain the metadata, etc. That's the only way currently available to move photos from one library to another and keep the roll, keywords, comments, etc. with those photos. You can connect the two Macs with one in the Target Mode, probably your PB, and then run iPLM to move the photos to the G5 library.
Now there is a way to have a library on your PB that reflects the one on your G5 but is only a fraction of the size. That's to have an alias based library on your PB that uses the Originals folder as its source of source files. (My 25,600 files, 27G, are represented by an iPhoto Library folder of only 1.75G). When the PB is not connected with the G5, say with a LAN, it will have limited capabilities which are in part: you'll only be able to view the thumbnail files, be able to add comments, create, delete or move albums around, add keywords (but with some hassle-but it can be done). You can't do anything that requires moving thumbnails around, work with books, slideshows or calendars. Once the two computers are networked together again the library will act as normal.
Now while on the road you can have a "normal" library to import new full sized files, keyword them, add comments, etc. and then transfer to the G5 library. Once in the G5 library they will be represented in a roll(s) and corresponding folder in the Originals folder. You then fire up the "alias" library, and import those new folders in the G5 Originals folder.
It may be a lot of work but it may be one way of doing it.
I've not done any of the "sharing" with iPhoto so don't know if that's another possible candidate for transferring.
P.S. FWIW I've created this workflow for converting from a conventional library to an alias based one.

  • Can you have multiple libraries on a single iPod?

Can you have multiple libraries on a single iPod?

    Yes.  This explains how >
Using iPad or iPod with Multiple Computers:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1202
Note:  You cannot load music from multiple computers or iTunes libraries onto iPod shuffle and iPhone like you can with other devices.

  • Can multiple libraries be sync to the same iPod?

As I start upload songs to iTunes library, quite quickly it has increased to 4 GB with the library big enough to use the side scroll bar. I guess we can have multiple libraries in iTunes in the same computer. But can multiple libraries be sync to the same iPod? i.e. Can I see more than one library in the ipod?
I find it uneasy to see too many entries in the library all the time. There is no way to make it invisible, hence this question.

If you want to connect and use an iPod with more than one library (or more than one computer) you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. The content of iTunes and the iPod are not syncronised in this mode so the two can be different. You can directly access the content of the iPod and play it through iTunes and you can drag and drop whatever you want to the iPod from either library:
    Using iPod with Multiple computers
    Managing content manually on iPod
    Syncing Music to iPod
    Using multiple iTunes libraries -Mac
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod

  • Cannot Use Multiple Libraries in ITunes 8.0

I'm trying to set up multiple libraries, one of lossless that runs of an external drive, one of compressed that runs off a portable drive. I'm in XP.
I have set up Itunes with the lossless files, and am now trying to startup Itunes with the shift key in order to have the option to create a new library. No dice. I hold shift then I double click on the Itunes icon on the desktop. I've also tried it from the programs menu and the start menu. On two different computers. Every time, it just loads the account already set up.
    HELP!

To create or access a second (or more) library on a Mac, hold down the Option key when launching iTunes 7. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to the other Library.
Note: You can only have one Library open at a time and iTunes will default to the last library opened if you don't use the keyboard command to choose one: Using multiple iTunes libraries -Mac

  • Multiple libraries, same computer

    Hey all!
I've been trying to organize my music quite a few days now. The good thing is I've figured out how i want things to be. Too bad iTunes doesn't seem to get it. Or maybe am I missing something?
I have a Macbook computer which is getting it's hard drive pretty full. Because I use it both at home and at work, I travel with it a lot which means, I can't fill it with music. I do have some music on it (podcasts for example), but most of my music is on external hard drive and I'd like to keep it that way.
The way I'm thinking, is there a way to let iTunes use multiple libraries at the same time? For example I have my external HDD library available next to the one on my internal hard drive? Kinda like when iTunes finds shared music on computers on the network?
That way I could differentiate two libraries yet having them both available without using option-key to launch and select libraries (thats kinda lame).
Hope you guys and gals get my point

  • Multiple libraries share possible on Apple TV

    Hi..
we have 2 ATV's in the house with a mac mini as a media server consiting of seperate (2 in this case) iTunes libraried, share under the same Apple ID..
I assume both of these libaries will appear in iTunes under "Shared" ?
Also, since i am using Home Sharing to an ATV, and they are also signed in via the same AppeID with multiple libraries, would this mean *both* libraries will show up on each ATV device ? If no, which one will. since its the same AppleID being used.

Unless the libraries are on different computers, then you will only be able to see one at once, which will be the one currently open.

  • Can i sync my ipad with multiple libraries.

i have recently purchased a new pc and having added my itunes library last night I cannot get my ipad to sync with the new library, it shows up in devices but will not sync. Is it possible to sync devices with multiple libraries? if not, what is the point of having upto 5 devices that can be authorised with an itunes id? any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

If you want to change the computer that it's synced to then see if this user-tip helps : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141
But if you just want to add music from that new computer but not change the computer that it's synced to then see this page : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1202
You can have your account authorised on up to 5 computers, that allows you to buy and use your content on those computer (e.g. play music, watch films). But some devices are designed to only be synced to one computer at a time, so syncing to a new computer would replace the current contents of the device with what is on the new computer.

  • Multiple Libraries Created

Upon installing Photos for Mac, and following the standard practice for using photos, I now have two Photos library files in my pictures folder.
    1) Photos Library
    2) Photos Library 2 (this is the library that Photos is using)
    and also
    3) iPhoto Library (this is normal though)
    a) Is it safe to delete #1 above?
    b) Because I have like 15,000 photos and 800 videos, my library size is around 130GB.  This has now been tripled!!!  There has got to be a better way.

Tim I’ve seen several posts like yours and the multiple Photo libraries shouldn’t be happening. With numerous computers and lots of testing I’ve not seen this happen even once. (I’ve seen other problems but not this one.) Thankfully Apple doesn’t just blithely delete the iPhoto/Aperature library so your original photos are safe. Photos can only use one library - the questions are (1) which is it using and (2) in whatever bug that results in the multiple libraries does it manage to import all your photos in both libraries.
Question 1 can be answered by starting Photos while holding the Option key which will let you select the library you want to use. If you select all your photos and look under the Image menu you can see how many have been selected but I’m not sure if this counts every “burst” as one picture or if it counts every photo in the burst. We’ve seen some inconsistency between photo counts in Photos on the computer and iOS so I’m not sure I’d totally trust the count. If it were me I’d throw away both Photos libraries and import again.

  • Synching Multiple libraries

I have three macs two that are 10.4.11 running iPhoto 6.0.6 and one that is and old G4 with 10.3.9 and runs iphoto 2.0.1. I want the old G4 to be a continuous slide show and be able to automatically synch photos from my other macs. We are a large household with many digital cameras and libraries that are many many gigs of pix. Is there a way for this to be automated and for all macs to stay in synch ?

Thanks. I wouldn't think that what I'm asking for is all that tough or unusual. Surely there are others that would find this useful.
To request from Apple - iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback
It actually is pretty tough depending on what you want to do
1 - obviously all computers would have to be running the same version - many peopla, like you, have different versions on different computers and some older computers can not run newer versions
2 - depending on what you mean by syncing it can be extremely dificult - think about what has to be done to identify different photos (new and/or edited) in multiple libraries and then to export them and import them into multiple libaries probperly to keep the database intact
3 - the other approach of allowing a centralized database is equally as difficult and is not likely to happne in a program that is one part of a $79 suite - profession quality multiuser programs cost several hundres to over a thousand dollars per user
Basically you are asking for much more than iphoto is or was ever intended to be - it is a consumer lever (one user calls it a mom and Pop package) that is amazing easy to use and powerful for its price point

  • Multiple Libraries on one computer

I want to store more music in iTunes than my iPod has room for (original iPod). I want to use one library for music that I don't want on my iPod and the other for the music I want to sync. I also want to be able to move music back and forth between the them.
How do I store music in multiple libraries on one computer without making separate computer user accounts or using the playlist work around?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, apple-rules

Yes, I am referring to the auto syncing of playlists. Not all of my music is assigned to playlists and I don't want to create them - too many songs.
As I mentioned in my original post:
I want to store more music in iTunes than my iPod has room for (original iPod). I want to use one library for music that I don't want on my iPod and the other for the music I want to sync. I also want to be able to move music back and forth between the them.
I want to be able to store music in iTunes and play that music in iTunes without having them downloaded to my iPod. It would be nice to have a Library in iTunes that can be separate from the iPod stuff.
I think I found a work around (#12). Until I get a better solution I am going to create a master folder to which I will move all my music that I do not want syncing to my iPod. Then, I will do a manual sync and exclude that folder.
    Thanks everyone.
