Multiple Libraries: DON'T MESS WITH MY ORGANIZATION!

Many music/audio fans are obsessive about how they organize their collections (see the movie/book "High Fidelity"), and I am one of them. I've spent HOURS organizing my iTunes Library, and I'm very protective about my genres.
About 50% of my iPod use is listening to audio books from Audible.com. I've always kept these books in a genre called Spoken Word, along with other spoken files (podcasts, etc.)
Low and behold, I install iTunes 7, and my Audible files are gone. I try to re-import them, and noting happens. I spend a couple of hours searching around online but turn up no info.
Finally, I notice that iTunes 7 has created a new Library called "Audiobooks" and moved all my Audible titles into it.
Well, I'm relieved that they aren't gone, but I'm still really ****** off. I don't want two Libraries. I want my titles to be organized the way I organized them. Why is Apple pushing their organization on me?
And, as-far-as I can tell, there's no way of changing this. If iTunes is going to create multiple Libraries, I should be able to drag titles from one to the other. Or I should be able to right-click a title, choose Info, and be able to switch Libraries, just as I can switch genres.
Now some of my spoken content (Audible) is in one Library and some (non-audible) is in another. I HATE that.
Worse, there no way (unless I'm missing something) to search all Libraries. For instance, I listen to "The Ricky Gervais Show." Some I downloaded from Audible and some I got from elsewhere. If I search for Gervais, I only get the items in the currently-selected Library.
This makes me really scared to install future updates. I don't want iTunes to mess with my organization any more. I have thousands of files, and I want to be able to fine them easily.
DON'T MESS WITH MY LIBRARY, APPLE!

Yes, that's what is showing as "modified time" by windows explorer.
In a sense, it is indeed operating system dependent because everytime you write in a file (.doc, .exe, .whatever and in our case .jpeg), the modified date will change in windows.
Yes, But.
In other applications, such as Irfanview, you can tick "apply original exif time/date" and as a result, even though you have indeed changed the file, windows explorer will still show the original date, meaning when the file was taken.
I am looking for a similar option in Lightroom or a trick to get that result.

  • Hey, Adobe, don't mess with MY desktop!!

I installed Lightroom 4.1 today.  I'm a Windows 7 user.  It's MY desktop.  The install messed with MY  desktop in two ways:
    1. It unpacked things to my desktop.  While it was nice enough to delete the unpacked files when it was done, but if something had gone wrong there would be this cruft on MY desktop.  Put the temporary files in %TEMP%.  That's where they are supposed to go.
    2. You created an icon on MY desktop without asking MY permission.  If every product I ever installed put an icon on my desktop, I'd need two big monitors.  Just ask.  Thankfully, most products do.  You didn't.
    Chuck

I kind of agree with you, but there are many, many more irritating things applications do.  In this case, deleting a desktop icon or folder are fairly easy, as you can see them (and there's no risk in removing them).
What annoy me more are programs that
load a load of trash at boot-up to check for updates (they could equally well do that when they run, don't slow down my boot-up)
leave stuff in memory to speed the launch of a program (unless I run it very very often, I don't want that)
leave services running when the corresponding program isn't running (Apple, are you listening?)
set tasks to run at regular intervals just to check - who knows what
add extra toolbars to other programs (unless you uncheck easy-to-miss opt-outs when installing)
Bad examples here: Sun java (update checker), Google (update checker), Adobe Flash, Apple (stuff related to itunes, ipods, ipads etc left running 24/7), Nikon (update service).  If you don't weed them out (with msconfig, autoruns or whatever) then you find boot-up takes extra minutes, and half a gig of memory is taken up with wholly idle software.

  • AppleScript Application - Multiple buttons don't work with one script...

Okay, so I need to control just about 22 buttons to make this project work. But. I still can't get 2 to work.
    Here is my script:
    on clicked theButton
      -- Preferences:
if title of theButton = "Save" then
set Word1 to the contents of the text field "WordDefine1" of window "Preferences"
                        display dialog "Saved the words:" & return & "-" & Word1
      --  Process of word one:
else if title of theButton = "Say1" then
display dialog "I hope I see this cuz then that button works. YAY!"
else if title of theButton = "Check1" then
if Word1 = contents of text field "WordInput1" of window "iSpell" then
say "If I can even see THIS, I am like in AppleScript heaven. BOTH buttons work!"
         end if
      end if
    end clicked
So when I click the "Save" button, it displays the defined dialog. But the button "Say1" does absoulutely nothing. Same for the "Check1" button.
I'm guessing I did something wrong here...
    Thanks in advance
P.S. (I'm not actually using the actions see here for the last 2 buttons:)

Okay, thanks so much, the buttonName script worked. This is part of what I have now:
    -- Preferences:
    if buttonName = "Save" then
set Word1 to the contents of the text field "WordDefine1" of window "Preferences"
      display dialog "Saved the words:" & return & "-" & Word1
      --  Process of word one:
else if buttonName = "Say1" then
      say Word1
The diplay dialog line at the end of the "Save" button script works, but when I do the say button, it has an AppleScript Error, saying that the variable Word1 is not defined. But the display dialog thing works. What the heck.

  • How do I go from using a single Apple ID with multiple libraries to using home sharing?

Until now my wife and I have opted to share our iTunes/Apple ID and use multiple libraries to manage our iPhones. This has become increasingly difficult...with issues such as having apps I've downloaded that she doesn't want automatically downloading to her library and even her phone. Now, add in the fact that I want to continue to manage my iTunes library from our PC and allow her to manage hers from her new MacBook Pro and we have good reason to move to home sharing with separate Apple IDs for each of us.
My question is the logistics of doing so. Not only do we need to replicate her existing library on a new Apple ID, but then we need to migrate all the necessary files over to her MacBook Pro. Quite honestly, I don't even know where to begin. Is it possible to associate her existing library with her new Apple ID without having to create her library from scratch? Then is there anyway to migrate only the items in her library over to her MacBook Pro as opposed having to move all of our music & apps? Where do I begin?
    Thanks!

Okay...I misunderstood and thought we needed separate ID's...but I see we actually need to use the same ID which simplifies things in my mind a bit. But still some followups...
    1) What do you mean by restore the library on her computer? Simply open her library file in iTunes?
    2) On our current machine...media is actually split between a couple folders but all under the My Music folder. But there are multiple subfolders (iTunes, Her iPhone, and Amazon MP3). I presume as long as I copy over the entire My Music folder there shouldn't be any access issues when the library is opened on her machine?
    3) Is there any easy way to get rid of all the extra files that she doesn't have in her library? For instance, all my music and apps that she doesn't actually want, is there any easy way of separating those out from the files that are actually linked to in her library? Vice versa for me...once we've go her library set up on her machine, any easy way to purge all the extra files from my PC that aren't actually in my library?
    Thanks!

  • ITunes match with multiple libraries

I can't seem to find a satisfactory answer to this.  Namely, how does iTunes Match treat multiple libraries on the same Mac.  In my case, I spent a lot of time segregating my music.  Thus, I have a rock library, a classical library, an instrumental (Windham Hill and Narada) library, an ambient recording library.  It makes sense to me to do this rather that dump everything into one pot.  That way, I can load a Touch with a specific library and don't have to create a zillion playlists.  Using the same iTunes login, how will Match treat these different libraries?  Will it only concern itself with what it finds in the currently open library?  How will it treat different iPod Touches that are linked to a specific library?  Will it want to push the wrong music to a Touch? Would appreciate any thoughts.

One person sets up Match on their computer using the iTunes account.  Uploads everything to match.
I would recommend waiting until that person is done, and do computers one at a time.  No particular reason, just seems sensible.
Next person sets up match using same iTunes account details.  Uploads their stuff.  They will then see everything the previous user put into the system, unless you select "Hide music not on this computer" in the view menu.  Previous user will now see their stuff too.
    Rinse and repeat.
This is how it worked with my multiple machines anyway...  As long as every computer uses the same iTunes account for the store, you all get access to the same Match account.

  • Mediasource Organizer Multiple Librari

I have a large MP3 collection in my "PC Music Library" and would like to set up sub-libraries so that my wife's and my favourites can be browsed more easily. Obviously I can set up playlists <EM>ad infinitum </EM>but these don't then enable me to narrow the playlist down further by genre (for instance), change the display order (which stays in the order added) and all the usual bells and whisltes available from the full PC Music Library view.
As I suspect that this cannot be done with this program, can anyone recommend a music organiser that can have multiple libraries/sub-libraries?

    mdowers wrote:
As you will see a couple of posts below I had already considered this approach, however, I just had a thought about YOUR stated preference for a single library for all users, regardless of their logon. Wouldn't this simply be a case of pointing each users options/settings library selection to the same database file (naturally stored in a shared directory)?
You can't do this in MediaSource. Believe me I've tried - even hacked the Registry to point to a shared folder but CMS keeps rewriting it back to what it was. It then creates an empty library in the standard location.
Each user's PC Music Library is stored within the User's profile - specifically in the C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Creative\Media Database folder.
That's why I liked PlayCenter - you could have one library in a shared area and point all users at it. But in PC I couldn't get it to detect my MuVo N200.

In terms of the first, without physically having two root music directories, one for each user, which the individual music libraries would monitor (together with their respecti've sub-directories), I think the act of manually including only the folders of interest applicable to each user's library would be time prohibiti've. Also I must say I would not be too enamoured by allowing my PC novice wife to get into settings/options menus as <EM>there be dragons there</EM>!.
If you and your wife logon using different usernames then you can have different libraries but they can both be full of music that is stored in a shared area of your hard dri've. This is how I have mine set up now with the Media Sniffer set up to sniff the shared area. That way if one person rips a new CD then the other person gets the option of importing the tracks next time they log in.
Will that not meet your needs?
    micromouse wrote:
After that, switch to your wife's PC music Library via Tools->Settings->PC Music Library. then import only those tracks that your wife wants.

  • How do you organize multiple libraries?

Last year, I kept one big giant library for every 6 months. This consisted of a terabyte of images per library.
I have always feared a library becoming corrupted and being unable to successfully restore the images.
    Do people keep smaller libraries?
I am thinking of starting a new library every month. Does this seem like a good idea? or a waste?
Lastly, do people keep the actual images not stored in the aperture library itself in case you need to get to the original file if something were to happen to the library?
    Thanks!

My biggest objection to multiple Libraries is that you then can't search for anything except the 'current' images, but I'm doing a lot of DAM tasks with Aperture as well as normal processing.
I mostly use referenced files, but that's because I'm usually working on a MBP which simply doesn't have the room to store all the files.
    Ian
P.S. Don't worry too much about corrupted Libraries - your images aren't being stored in a binary database file, they are in a 'package' - in other words it's a special kind of folder which you can access by Control-clicking on it in the Finder and choosing 'Show Package Content'. You can then do a Spotlight search in the folder and find all your image - doesn't matter if the DB is corrupt, you don't even need Aperture on the machine.

  • Managing multiple libraries with different file types (AAC v. Lossless)

I have set up two libraries, one for my AAC music and the other for my lossless music. The files themselves are located in two separate places on my hard drive. When I switch libraries (option-clicking iTunes), and go to Preferences/Advanced tab, the directory for the files and the import method doesn't change -- I have to change it manually. This is annoying.
Does anyone know of a way to automate this change, so that if I open a new library, the default location of the files and the import format changes automatically? I tried ituneslibrarymanager from Dougscripts, but for some reason can't get this program to install on my machine.

No, it's the same Windows XP user account, but I have two separate music libraries - the music files in library are in a lossless format, while those in the other are in AAC. For convenience, I wish to keep the two libraries separate.
In iTunes 7 it is possible to have separate libraries - start iTunes and hold down the SHIFT key (Windows) while the program starts. A dialogue box then appears where the required library can be selected. However, as far as I can tell, it's not possible to have a different set of preferences for each library.
Say the preferences are set up for my lossless library, which is located on a separate network drive. If I then make the AAC library active and open iTunes, iTunes reindexes the library according to the settings for the lossless library and I end up with the AAC library full of lossless files. I've tried unchecking various things in the preferences box, but I've had no luck fixing the problem. Thanks for your suggestion - I have already reported the problem.
The whole thing is a rather inelegant way of managing multiple libraries in iTunes. Surely the Apple developers can come up with a way of doing it from within iTunes??

  • I have multiple users on my computer with separate iTunes libraries.  can we share?

I have multiple users on my computer with separate iTunes libraries.  Is it possible to share the libraries?  The "share library" preference doesn't seem to work.

Hi b noir, I also have two users on one pc with two different iTunes libraries.  But I also want to put them onto an external hard drive so that I can free up some memory on the pc.  So I figure I need to consolidate the two users iTunes libraries first before moving to hard drive?  But not quite sure how to do that on the iTunes 11?  Thanking you in advance!!

Currently using Photoshop CS5, but with a replacement computer and upgrade to Yosemite, keep being told I need to install the legacy Java 6. Currently, Photoshop won't even open. I absolutely do not want to subscribe, don't want to mess with the cloud, just want to buy an upgrade to something that will run for a while longer. I don't care about Lightroom, Bridge, Illustrator, etc.; most of those I've deleted over the years. But I do use Photoshop - or would if it would still run. What options do I have?

This is the java you need for photoshop cs5 to work on mac os x 10.10 Yosemite
    https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572?locale=en_US
It's also possible you may have to reinstall photoshop cs5 even after installing the above java, because sometimes the upgrade to mac os x 10.10 messes up the photoshop cs5 installation.
You can download photoshop cs5 from here if you don't already have the install media.

  • Educator managing 120 iPod Touches with multiple libraries

By using multiple libraries I am able to set each library up for a grade level and content area with their particular needs in mind.  I am syncing the iPods sometimes as often as two times per week and changing the library each time.  Will this affect the life of the iPod?  My school has made quite an investment and I want to be sure we get them to last as long as possible.

No, synching the iPods multiple times per week should not affect their life at all. It's not only presumed but recommended that an iPod be synched regularly for backup purposes. This of course assumes that you take care regarding avoiding static electricity shocks, one of the most common causes of failure in electronic devices.
    Regards.

  • Can i sync my ipad with multiple libraries.

i have recently purchased a new pc and having added my itunes library last night I cannot get my ipad to sync with the new library, it shows up in devices but will not sync. Is it possible to sync devices with multiple libraries? if not, what is the point of having upto 5 devices that can be authorised with an itunes id? any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

If you want to change the computer that it's synced to then see if this user-tip helps : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141
But if you just want to add music from that new computer but not change the computer that it's synced to then see this page : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1202
You can have your account authorised on up to 5 computers, that allows you to buy and use your content on those computer (e.g. play music, watch films). But some devices are designed to only be synced to one computer at a time, so syncing to a new computer would replace the current contents of the device with what is on the new computer.

  • Can't Sync with Multiple Libraries

My wife gave me an 8 GB iPod Nano for my birthday (I think they really mean 8 gB, but that's not really a big deal). It's got a nice slick aluminum (I think) case and a pretty LCD screen.
I had been resisting getting myself an iPod for a while now because Apple usually screws things up, but she chose it.
Not that I have it, I have decided that I was right. Apple completely screwed this thing up. My wife put a few songs from her laptop on the iPod and then I thought, great. I'll just add some from my laptop. I downloaded the new version of iTunes, but it told me that I couldn't add songs from my library without deleting the songs already on the iPod.
Now, I'm not a moron. I know that there's no technical reason for this reason for this. It's a freakin' piece of flash memory with a usb port and some dsp circuits. And it's one of the most expensive one's on the market. So why doesn't it work correctly?
This gd thing cost my wife $275 and IT DOESN"T WORK!!!! I'd take the POS back except that she already got my name engraved on it (not to mention that it might hurt her feelings).
Can someone please explain why Mac is trying to screw its customers over and why its customers put up with this BS?
I realize that there are probably hacks to get my iPod to sync with multiple libraries, but for $275, it ought to work right out of the box.

Okay. Okay. So I found the option to manually sync my iPod. I still think that it kind of ***** that the iPod doesn't store the files with their real names but instead uses those funny four letter names.
