Multiple Libraries on 1 computer?

Hi,
I was wondering is it possible to set up multiple libraries on one computer? For example if multiple family members using the same computer but w/ vastly different musical tastes all have iPods is there a way to set iTunes up where I wouldn't have to deal w/ all of my other family member's songs?

  • Multiple Libraries on one computer

I want to store more music in iTunes than my iPod has room for (original iPod). I want to use one library for music that I don't want on my iPod and the other for the music I want to sync. I also want to be able to move music back and forth between the them.
How do I store music in multiple libraries on one computer without making separate computer user accounts or using the playlist work around?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, apple-rules

Yes, I am referring to the auto syncing of playlists. Not all of my music is assigned to playlists and I don't want to create them - too many songs.
As I mentioned in my original post:

I want to be able to store music in iTunes and play that music in iTunes without having them downloaded to my iPod. It would be nice to have a Library in iTunes that can be separate from the iPod stuff.
I think I found a work around (#12). Until I get a better solution I am going to create a master folder to which I will move all my music that I do not want syncing to my iPod. Then, I will do a manual sync and exclude that folder.
    Thanks everyone.

  • Home Sharing with multiple libraries on same computer?

I'm a total Apple noob, but I couldn't find the answer through search so here goes:
    Setup:
1 Desktop PC with XP running iTunes 10.2
1 user account, but two libraries - 1 for my wife and 1 for me (maybe more later)
    1 iPod Classic for wife
1 iPad2 for me - it's coming in the mail soon, I hope!
    Goal:
Home share from iPad2 with either library over wifi network
    Issue:
iPad isn't here so I haven't tried this, but I understand iTunes has to be running for homesharing to work. If that's true, I'm worried, the iPad2 will only see the open library and not all the libraries on the computer. All the tutorials I've seen show only one library per computer, but that's not my setup.
    Will this work for us?
    Thanks

P.S. Also looking on way to share playlists between libraries on the same computer. Any links on how to do this?

+.... iTunes has to be running for homesharing to work. If that's true, I'm worried, the iPad2 will only see the open library...+
Yes, that's the way it's going to be. Only one user can have itunes running on windows. If a 2nd user tries to launch itunes there will be an error message saying another user is already running it. Quite the pain. itunes doesn't work with windows fast user switching.

Macs are different, and every user can have their own itunes library running at once.

  • Multiple libraries on same computer

My operating system is Windows XP, and my daughter has been downloading songs from itunes when others are logged onto the computer, so she has songs scattered through three different libraries. Is there a way to combine them? Keep in mind that I am not very computer savvy, and she's only 10. Thanks.
    Dell desktop   Windows XP

Well, the easiest way for me would be to burn all the "scattered" music onto a CD-RW. It might cost you a few bucks but at least you won't have to re-buy her music.
All you have to do is go to the iTunes library of each user and burn your daughters songs. You will need one blank CD for every user that her music is located.
After you do that, all you have to do is copy the CD's to the iTunes library of your choice.

  • Multiple libraries on 1 computer, can't access new library

I have two libraries on two computers, one on each. I needed to move one library to the computer that already has one library. I followed all the steps on the apple article "how to use our ipod to move your music to a new computer". Now both libraries are on one computer, however the one I moved won't open in itunes. I know to hold the shift key down while clicking on itunes so it asks me to either choose a libary or create one. Whether I choose "create one" or "choose a library" it won't access the library I moved.
    Help!

    These directions?

Sadly, I believe those steps will overwrite the library file that was previously there.
Search your PC's hard drive for files containing ITL. How many itl library files does it find?

  • Having two libraries on one computer

I have account with my sister and we have all our songs on one library. How can we make it two so we don't have the same songs?

Niel's suggestion certainly works - it's how I run multiple libraries on my computer (although there are at least two other methods). This way you only have one copy of each song on the computer, and each user can select whether or not to import it into their own library.
One further suggestion I'd make (from experience!) is to create a dummy music file in your library (just pick any track or file of small size) and rename it "00 Eric's Library" - ie, one appropriately-named file per library - then, if you sort your library by filename this will always be at the top, so you can tell at a glance that you're in the correct library (not always obvious if you share lots of music); although iTunes warns you before doing so, you can end up in a real mess if you accidentally synch your ipod to the wrong library!

  • Multiple itunes libraries on same computer and removable hard drives

I have multiple itunes libraries, one resides on my internal hard drive on my computer and the other on a removable hard drive that I pug into the ocmputer via a USB cable, can itunes recognize both libraries at once, and how do I get it to do that?

That *****, apple should add a feature that allows multiple libraries.....hopefully they will in thenext release of iTunes.

  • TS2972 I have multiple libraries on the "same computer" with two different desktops, can't I share between two libraries on the same computer?

I'm trying to use home sharing to share content between libraries so some of the combined content in a given library, can be synced to an ipad.   Instad of having mulitple computers, i have multiple libraries on the same computer using two desktops.  How do I share within the same computer?

iTunes must be running for home sharing to work.  There is no way to have home sharing running simultaniously for two users on the same computer.
Simply add the media files using File > Add File/Folder option in iTunes.

  • How can I create multiple libraries on a windows 8 HP computer?

I just got the newest generation Ipod Touch, and the itunes is not supported on my iMac G5. My parents have a Windows 8 HP computer. My dad's itunes account is on that computer. So what I want to do is use my external hardrive to sync it to my Windows 8 computer. I am trying to find out how to create multiple libraries.
    Please help me out.

These all have drm so i cannot read them without a i-Device.
Correct.  If you do not have an iOS device or a Mac running Mavericks, do not buy Apple iBooks.  They will be unreadable.

  • I have multiple libraries on the SAME computer.

I have multiple libraries on the SAME computer. How can I share these libraries? I do not see the SHARED tab when i open iTunes. Where is this tab?

home sharing works between two or more computers on the same LAN.
if you're talking about libraries on multiple user accounts on the same computer, peruse how to share music between different accounts on a single computer.
if you mean you're working with multiple libraries on the same user account, check out PowerTunes or iTunes Library Manager.

  • Multiple Libraries on a single computer

Is there a command line switch which can be included in the iTunes shortcut to replace using the SHIFT key used to prompt for Creating and/or Selecting from multiple libraries on a single computer?

    Sorry.
If you just want to have your iTunes content spread across multiple drives, you can just uncheck the Copy to media folder option in iTunes Preferences> Advanced

  • I have multiple users on my computer with separate iTunes libraries.  can we share?

I have multiple users on my computer with separate iTunes libraries.  Is it possible to share the libraries?  The "share library" preference doesn't seem to work.

Hi b noir, I also have two users on one pc with two different iTunes libraries.  But I also want to put them onto an external hard drive so that I can free up some memory on the pc.  So I figure I need to consolidate the two users iTunes libraries first before moving to hard drive?  But not quite sure how to do that on the iTunes 11?  Thanking you in advance!!

  • Multiple libraries, same computer

    Hey all!
I've been trying to organize my music quite a few days now. The good thing is I've figured out how i want things to be. Too bad iTunes doesn't seem to get it. Or maybe am I missing something?
I have a Macbook computer which is getting it's hard drive pretty full. Because I use it both at home and at work, I travel with it a lot which means, I can't fill it with music. I do have some music on it (podcasts for example), but most of my music is on external hard drive and I'd like to keep it that way.
The way I'm thinking, is there a way to let iTunes use multiple libraries at the same time? For example I have my external HDD library available next to the one on my internal hard drive? Kinda like when iTunes finds shared music on computers on the network?
That way I could differentiate two libraries yet having them both available without using option-key to launch and select libraries (thats kinda lame).
Hope you guys and gals get my point
