Multiple libraries on hard drive

Let me preface this question by saying I am a novice user and so I don't know all the ins and outs of using this computer.  Having said that, I have two locations for my computer library.  When I purchased my imac I transferred my information from my macbook.  Now I have two libraries on my hard drive and one is 6gigs and the other is 9gigs, one is also inside the systems folder and the other is just on the HD.  It won't allow me to delete either one because it's still pulling from both of them.  Can anyone tell me if this is an issue or is this something that I just have to live with?

That's normal. Leave them as is.

  • Lossless to ACC Automator Conversion/Multiple Libraries/External Hard drive

I've been playing around with setting up a home media server, and have run into a few issues and have a few questions about this.
Question 1: Best way to rip into lossless format?
-apple lossless vs. other: has anyone had problems streaming lossless files to iTunes/Airport Extreme?
Question 2: Best way to manage multiple libraries?
-Library manager vs. option key during startup?
    -see below
Question 3:Any Automator scripts to convert Lossless to AAC, then save to desktop?
Why this is important to me:
-goal is to have large external HD as a media server with a mac mini/iTV as front end.
-would like to have iMac hardwired to external HD via Firewire for data manipulation/editing, then upload into 'Master Source' file for photos, music, movies
-would like mac mini/iTV (eventually) to act as always on front end client for external HD; would be hardwired/firewired to external HD to prevent lag time; thus could use front row for browsing photos, music, movies off TV monitor
NOTE: no desire for cable/sattelite viewing - what I want to watch I would buy on DVD (backup reasons)
-would like to have music stored in lossless format on external HD for home stereo use, etc, and have a duplicate library in AAC on desktop for syncing with ipod nano
-look for my posts on Front Row issues/wish list for TS file viewing, problems with multiple iPhoto libraries
BTW any external HD that have 2 firewire ports? Most that I see either have two USB 2.0 ports or 1 USB and 1 firewire port

    Hi Kirby-
My IMac is 10.7.5 Aperture 3.4.5
My MacBook is 10.8.5 Ap 3.4.5
Guess it's been a while since I've posted.
    Thanks,
    J

  • How to store vaults for multiple libraries on one drive

Does anyone know if one can have a vault for three different Aperture libraries on the same external drive? The prompt says something about erasing all vaults.

  • Having a library on multiple hard drives

So in the past year I became a mac convert and I use my mac mini for just about everything I can. I’m thinking of buying a new ibook when they come out in march/april and have a question about itunes for anyone who can answer.
I currently have about 80 gb of music on an external hard drive that I plug into my mac mini. Obviously I wouldn’t be copying all this music to an ibook hard drive because then I would have verry little space left for applications… But I wouldn’t mind being able to copy some music onto it for when I’m on the road, and having the rest on my external for when I’m home. However when exploring itunes there doesn’t seem to be away to have multiple libraries on different drives.
Does anybody know a way to do this, or if there’s third party software that will assist with it?
    ibook   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I believe if you just uncheck: "Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to Library" under the advaced settings, that should work fine. I used to do this in the past before I moved everything to a file server. It worked for me, just be aware that if you try to play or synch something to your iPod that is not attached, it will complain.

  • I have used a Seagate external hard drive for my Mac desktop. It is malfunctioning. Can I disconnect and depend on iCloud to keep my documents, music, and photos backed up safe and secure? I use the Cloud for phone, pad and desktop.

Can I expect iCloud to safely back up and secure my documents, music and pictures? I am using Cloud on phone, pad, and desktop. Have depended on external hard drive in the past. It is malfunctioning. Will the Cloud replace it for storage and safety?

Time Machine in itself, without an external drive may well be good for instances where you accidentally delete documents that you later require. However in the event of a hard drive failure, if Time Machine backup is kept on the same drive as the original items, it will not be much use to you.
In my opinion, it is vitally important that you have an external drive for backup, whether you use Time Machine or a another backup solution is entirely up to you.
My situation is slightly unusual, I have four hard drives in my computer and multiple arrays of hard drive enclosures with multiple hard drives within them (in total I have 40 TB of storage). As a result of this I tend to employ more than one backup procedure, I use Time Machine to backup some items and a utility called tri-backup to backup other items. I also keep two backups of everything.
Time Machine is free, it's included with your operating system, I wonder if you mean time capsule.

  • Hard Drive Replacement Question(s)

I have an HP Pavilion DV6 laptop. I have recently been getting multiple errors about hard drive failure. If I was to replace the Hard drive, would I need to reinstall windows 7? Also, if I was to replace the hard drive, would that solve the issue or would I still have problems? Any replies or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi
Do a complete extensive & quick hard drive test from BIOS by tapping F2/F10 quickly after powering on.
Wait for the results, write down 24-character failure ID.
Back up all the personal data & try creating recovery disks if not yet done.
Yes you'll have to restore or reinstall.
If you have the recovery disks with you, just reinstall from it, Otherwise clean install Windows 7 from disks and enter the product key on the back of the laptop in the COA sticker.
You can order recovery disks from HP if you're insert warranty.
If the problem was with the hard drive and you got the error for it, the error would be surely gone after the replacement.
You can get hard disk replaced from HP if covered under warranty.
    thanks

  • Multiple itunes libraries on same computer and removable hard drives

I have multiple itunes libraries, one resides on my internal hard drive on my computer and the other on a removable hard drive that I pug into the ocmputer via a USB cable, can itunes recognize both libraries at once, and how do I get it to do that?

That *****, apple should add a feature that allows multiple libraries.....hopefully they will in thenext release of iTunes.

  • Best way to merge multiple iPhoto libraries from several external hard drives into one, while deleting duplicates?

Problem: My wife and I both have MacBook Pros (MBPs).  We take a lot of pictures and import them into iPhoto.  When the storage capacity of our MBPs gets full, I have been moving our iPhoto libraries into external hard drives, which are now multiple (3 or 4).  The problem I now realize we have been making, is that once the iPhoto libraries were copied onto the external hard drives, we were only deleting about half of the photos in each iPhoto library remaining in our MBPs (because we wanted to keep some of the important ones in our hard drives).  Once the storage capacities of our MBPs got full again, I would repeat the whole process again and again.  In essence I now have several large iPhoto libraries (each about 80 GB), each with multiple duplicate photos, divided among several external hard drives.  And I am running out of space on my hard drive again.  So what is the best way to:
    a)  merge all of these iPhoto libraries into just one, while simultaneously being able to delete all the duplicates?  (or would you not recommend this?)
    b)  prevent this from happening again?
Thanks.  BTW I am using OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5 and iPhoto 8.1.2 (2009)

If you have Aperture 3.3 or later and iPhoto 9.3 or later you can merge libraries with Aperture.
Otherwise the only way to merge Libraries is with the paid ($30) version of iPhoto Library Manager
The Library Manager app can be set avoid duplicates.

  • Multiple iPhoto libraries on my ext hard drive back up

Hi I have a problem with multiple iPhoto libraries on my ext hard drive back up  They are different sizes and large 120gb  Is there any way I can rationalise the libraries without the risk of losing data? My iPhoto library on the Mac appears to be complete but with >200gb of photos I cannot be sure.

I upgraded to Lion OS and suffered multiple crashes necessitating a complete rebuild of the system - reformat the main hard drive and install Lion OS from a disk  In an effort to be absolutely sure I didn't lose data I have been overenthusiastic in transferring photos to the backup disk dragging and dropping files that contained images as well as a full transfer of "mymac" before reformating.  Time machine backup was not realistic as this was the one operation which caused most of the "hangs"  System now appears to be working well with Lion OS but I have masses of duplicate jpeg files in multiple folders and libraries - I am considering purchasing Duplicate Annihilator to deal with the duplicates then perhaps I should try to merge the libraries with iPhoto manager?

  • Multiple phones, hard drives and libraries

somehow i have wound up with multiple libraries for multiple people in too many different folders. how is the best way to clean this up?

    Assuming you are using Lightroom:
Point 1 means having one catalog (Lightroom cannot search across multiple catalogs), with previews created for all images. Most users operate this way.
Point 2 is no problem. Lightroom can support multiple hard drives, so simply connect your hard drives and import the images from them. Obviously, if connecting drives one by one they'll need to have different drive names (Mac) or letters (Windows).
Point 3 I don't understand. If you are saying you would additionally like to have a different catalog for each hard drive, well yes you can do that but in doing so you've invalidated point 1 and in the process probably made life more complicated for yourself, as any change made in a "single drive catalog" wouldn't show up in the one master catalog without a great deal of complicated work.
Point 4 is no problem. All your drives will be listed separately in the Folders Panel, and there are a variety of ways in checking which drive a particular image is on (e.g. simply hover the mouse over the Folder name in the Metadata Panel of any image and a tool-tip will pop up showing the full path to the image).

  • How can I back up multiple itunes libraries to an external hard drive?

  • Multiple Libraries with same artists on external hard drive

I have saved about 5 seperate iTunes libraries and have now gotten them all on the same external hard drive. I have aprox 19000 tracks at about 168gb. The libraries r kind of a mess and I'm wondering if there's a shortcut to organizing files. Otherwise this is gonna take forever.

You need to turn on Sharing for the external drive - Select the external drive. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and check the Shared box. If the drive is connected to your computer then turn on File Sharing in your Sharing preferences and list your wife's username for access.
You might also wish to read iTunes- Setting up Home Sharing on your computer as well as just sharing the library using the iTunes' Sharing preferences.
Also, see iTunes- How to share music between different accounts on a single computer.

I have an extensive aperture library on my computer's hard drive and I want to break it up into separate smaller libraries on external hard drives.  How do I take projects from one library and add them to another one?

    Coastal,
Frank gave you the exact answer to your question.
However, I would like to ask if you are indeed asking the right question.  Do you really want different libraries?  The implications are that you have to "switch" libraries to see what's in the others, and so that your searches don't work across all of your pictures?  If so, then you asked the right question.  If not, you may be more interested in relocating your masters to multiple hard drives so your library gets smaller, instead of breaking up the library.

  • Any way to span a single iTunes Library over multiple hard drives?

I have a hard drive that is almost full and the only thing on it is my iTunes library. It is not feasible for me to get a larger hard drive as this one is already a 1TB hard drive. Now, I have seen I can create multiple libraries, with each library on a different hard drive if I wish. However, not only is most of the media in the library podcasts, using multiple libraries for a single iPod Touch would be a pain.
So, is there a way for the iTunes Library to span over more than one hard drive, but yet be a single library? It would make it easier to sync my iPod Touch.
    Thanks in advance!

I'm assuming that I would have to "import" my old drive into the library
You don't import anything since your library is the same as it was. All those items are still in iTunes in the same location. The ONLY thing different is iTunes prefs -> Advanced.
Or am I wrong and it will have my previous media folder still in the library, and anything new would be put in the new media folder?
Yes & yes. Everything in iTunes will still be in iTunes, stay in the same location it is now and iTunes will use it from there.
Anything new added to iTunes will go to the location you set in iTunes prefs -> Advanced.
