Multiple Macs: Disk Images or Clones

Greetings,
I have a MBP that is my main machine. The wife has an iMac with an older OS.
I also just bought a Seagate FreeAgent Go for Mac (320G), and want to create backups of both machines on this external HD. Reading around, I know I can create disk images of the hard drives for each computer and store them on the external HD (there is enough room), and I believe the other sensible alternative is to partition the external HD (into 2) and clone one machine on each partition (thinking of using Carbon Copy Cloner). For this latter option (cloning each machines' drive), I believe I need separate drives (or partitions) to do that (i.e. can't clone the internal HD's from each machine onto one external HD volume) (?).
If I have those options correct (disabuse me as needed). Recommendations on which strategy might be best?
This will be for complete backups done once a month or so.

Thanks much all...
Kiraly...now we are getting down to the nub of it...if I work with disk images, I need a functioning hard drive with space to load the back-up disk image onto and work from.
I think Carbon Copy Cloner is misusing the term bootable disk image on their website:
"Carbon Copy Cloner 3 leverages disk images to provide you the flexibility of storing several complete, bootable* backups on a single shared external hard drive. (* Disk images themselves are not bootable, but you can mount them and restore their content to a physical hard drive to produce a bootable, exact replica of the original)."

  • Adobe XI trial failure on Mac (disk image couldn't be opened)

I downloaded the Acrobat Pro Trial and after the download, it got stuck on "Extracting. This might take a while." In addition, a warning box appeared and stated, acrobatpro_11_web_WWMUI.dmg -error -4960 disk image couldn't be opened. I am running Mac OS X, 10.6.8.
The extraction never finished and I have not been able to begin using the trial. Could anyine advise on how to get beyond this issue and start the trial?
There seem to have been similar questions in the past (http://forums.adobe.com/message/5466536), but the question was not answered in a way that would have resolved the issue.
Thank you in advance for your help! I too am in the middle of PhD submissions and could quite use the programme right now (and am hesitant about purchasing a programme whose trial does not even work).

  • Time Machine for backups for multiple Macs, disk space?

    Hey there,
i have an Time Machine drive with backups of my old MacBook and a brand new MacBook Pro. Now i wanted to connect my new MacBook Pro with my Time Machine harddrive.
The Problem is this: First there were not enough disk space available on the harddrive, so i could not create a new backup of my MacBook Pro. Then i excluded some big folders and i could create my backup. My old Macbook is currently (and the next few month) not physically available at my place, so i could not delete old backups manually with this. But i want to keep this backups.
Now my question: In the future, will Time Machine delete my old MacBook backups or will it fail and my harddisk is full after 2 backups of the MacBook Pro?
    Best regards and thanks
    Johannes

    Alright,
i have a few years of backups in this TM. I thought TM will delete old backups if the harddisk runs out of space, or am i wrong? The question is, if TM will delete old backups of other Macs synced with this TM.
    Best regards

  • Time Machine or Disk Image

    Hi Everyone,
I want to backup my data to be sure that in the event something goes wrong I can get it all back again. My question is, in the situation where for some reason I have to reformat my hard drive, will there be an option in Time Machine to restore the system completely to a working version? As in, can I just go and reinstall it using the Time Machine data and get everything back?
    OR
Would a disk image do this or do the exact same thing? If I created a disk image of my entire drive, after reinstalling the OS and formatting the HD, could I just load the drive as it was from a disk image?
I'm mostly concerned about my applications. I realized recently that several of my discs have gone missing and thus I no longer have my registration codes. I'm looking for a much easier way than having the hassle of contacting the companies or having to repurchase if things go wrong.
    Thanks for your help!
    Cheers,
    Jillian

Here are a few points regarding what will be needed to get back up and running.
If you back up with Time Machine, you will need both your Leopard install disk and your Time Machine backup, in order for Time Machine to put it all back together.
If you back up to a disk image, you need to be able to boot from an external disk of some kind, or attach your Mac to another Mac, because something has to open the disk image and clone it back onto your original Mac that had the problem.
If you back up to a bootable external hard drive (using Disk Utility, SuperDuper, or Carbon Copy Cloner), you only need that drive. You can boot from it and use it to clone itself back to the Mac.
As far as the software licenses go, it's really hard to predict what will happen unless you have an exact list of which software it is and you know how they store their registrations. Looking at my own Mac:
    1. Some software stores registration info in the application, so it moves with the application. No prob.
    2. Some software stores registration info in a separate file. Sometimes it's in the same folder as the app. Sometimes it's in the Preferences folder. Sometimes it's in the Application Support folder. As long as that file is still where the program wants to find it, you're OK.
    3. Some software does #2 but makes the file invisible, making it hard to locate.
    4. Some software does #2 but gives the file a name that does not identify which application it belongs to, and encrypts the contents. So you can't figure out where it is or what it looks like.
    5. Some software does #4 and has tied your registration info to a specific hardware combination, so there is a possibility that if it finds itself on a modified computer (e.g., you replaced the hard disk) it will notice the change, and fail to register.
If you are lucky, your software will be easy to migrate. But the more expensive or established the software, the more likely it is that at least one of your programs will need to be re-registered due to anti-piracy measures taken with the registration storage.

  • Windows access to mac encrypted images?

I know that truecrpyt is a cross platform solution for creating encrypted volumes. Is there ANY way that I would be able to access encrypted volumes or ANY volumes for that matter that I created on a mac using windows? any tricks or third party software you are aware of?
    Thanks!

Mac disk images cannot be read on Windows.
You may want to try using an ISO image:

  • How to make a DVD disk image to be burned from a PC?

I need to make a DVD with DVD-SP, save a disc image, upload it have someone on a PC download it and burn it.
Is this possible? Anybody been succesful at this?
    thanks

If they have a burning program that recognizes VIDEO_TS files, no problem.
You need to remove two files from VIDEO_TS first called .LAY and .LAYOUT. They are only required by DVD SP and not the final disc.
To be safe make a top level folder called NAME_OF_FILM (max 32 characters) and put VIDEO_TS in there together with an empty folder named AUDIO_TS.
Actually, DVD SP should generate this for you it will be where ever the Build folder is set to be saved in Preferences.
Don't make a Mac disk image. PCs can't read them. A .zip file or ISO (Toast makes them) is probably better.

  • Creating Disk Image for Solaris 8 Admin Pack

    Hi,
When I download the zip files "Software CD Image" for Solaris 8 Admin Pack / Solstice AdminSuite 3.0 and "Documentation CD Image", I get a zip file containing the contents of an installation disk (ie files and directories) rather than ISO files for creating a disk.
lf I then burn these to a CD (in either UDF or 9660 format) and try to install, it fails for various reasons, not least of which is the fact that the top level installation file does not have X permission. I know that I could copy these files to the Sun, change permission and run from there, but for various reasons I also need to be able to install from CD.
Does anyone know either how to create a CD with the correct format / file permissions / etc, or alternatively where the correct ISO's can be retrieved?
    Thanks in advance.

Partition before installing, then try it. Alternatively, use something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! to put a bootable backup/clone onto the partition. That gives you something that you can immediately verify. A disk image requires restoring before you can be assured that it's viable. I've beta-tested Panther through Snow Leopard and have never made a disk image, only clones. Finally, creating the disk image takes much more time to create than does the clone. Just my 2¢. BTW, the image is useless unless you can successfully restore it. I have no idea why it's not working for you.

  • Writing to Encrypted Disk Image SLOW On Mac Pro

I have a slew of Previous Gen (2010/2012) Mac Pro 12-Core 2.66 desktops running 10.8.5 (12F45). When making a standard 128-bit Encrypted Disk Image, the write speed to that image is extremely slow. Disk image is on the same system internal drive as the source material. Also tried on Gigabit Ethernet share. 1GB file takes 20 minutes.
If I take the same disk image and run it on a 2012 Mac mini server 2.6 i7 running 10.8.5 (12F45), the write speed is fast; 1GB takes 1 minute. Same holds true for a MacBook Pro (non-Retina) 2.3 i7 running 10.8.5 (12F45).
Antivirus is disabled on all machines for testing purposes. Mac mini is actually a clone of the Mac Pro's system, so everything is the same, software-wise.
Is there something inherently wrong with these Xeon Mac Pros that they cannot write fast to encrypted disks? Any other variables I'm not thinking of?
    Thanks in advance.

The write speed to an encrypted image is around 5.65MB/s in comparison to 92MB/s on normal disk. I feel frustrated to see the remaining time to copy 800GB of data from internal HDD to the mounted encrypted volume takes around 1 day. An encrypted disk managed by Truecrypt on any PC will work much better than it.

  • Can't Restore with Clone or Disk Image

    Hi:
I am unable to restore my internal-drive OS X partition using either a clone of the partition or a disk image of it. Note that Win7 is installed or a separate partition of the internal drive via Boot Camp.
I had a similar problem when making the clone originally. I solved the problem by erasing and then restoring. However, my success may have simply been coincidental with the erase procedure. For obvious reasons, I hesitate to erase my internal-drive OS X partition before trying to restore using either the clone or a disk image.
Any thoughts? Oh, and each restore attempt appears to be working. However, about 1/2 of the way through, the restore fails, and I am told that the "operation is not permitted." The permissions on my internal partition are set to "everyone can read and write."

Thanks much for your reply. I have come to believe that one must erase before restoring from a clone or a disk image. I arrived at this conclusion because I purchased SuperDuper, and SuperDuper always erases before restoring a clone. It appears that the option of not erasing when using Disk Utility exists only if the disk already has been erased. I don't recall this being the way things were in my prior incarnations as a Mac user.

  • Carbon Copy Cloner Vrs. Mac Disk Utilityy

Somebody with experience may be able to answer this: I'm lookng at cloning disk images from the internal drive to external FW dirive. i can do the same thing with the Apple Disk utility, or with Caron Copy Cloner. As near as I can tell, the only advntage that Carbon Copy Cloner has is the ability to schedule the disk image creation.
But, here's the problem. The last time I burned a clone disk image to my external drive, it took about 10 hours! That kind of makes the method not so practical. Can CC Cloner do it faster, or just schedule and automate it for me?
    Thanks
iMac 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Long Live the Mac!

    Hi
At risk of sounding like a parrot, I too recommend using SuperDuper!.
Kevin's right. The best thing to do is partition your external HD (if very different in size from your internal) so that you have a partition that is the same size of your internal HD, and then make a bootable clone of your internal HD on that. Subsequent updates using the licensed version of SuperDuper! typically take less than ten minutes.

  • Mac osx 10.6 will not recognize disk image of HP driver download

Wanted to scan from my HP officejet pro 8600 and send to my Mac desktop. Message said that I had to download a driver first, so I did, but now the computer will not recognize the disk imag. I don't know what to do so that the Mac  will recognize the disk and allow me to install the download.

    Hi @dabeck
    I would like to help you install the software for your 8600 onto your Mac. Since the Mac is unable to recognize the disk image file, I would first suggest we repair the disk permissions. Please use the steps below to troubleshoot the issue;
    Repair Disk Permissions
On the Dock, click Applications, and then click Utilities.
    Double-click Disk Utility.
Highlight your hard drive/partition on the left (by default this is "Macintosh HD").
Click the Repair Disk Permissions button at the bottom of the window.
Once the repair is complete, restart the computer.
Restart the printer. Now you can download and install the printer software and install it. >  Officejet-Pro-8600_v12.23.0.dmg
Please let me know the outcome of these efforts. I hope to see this resolved quickly for you.
Please click the Thumbs up icon below to thank me for responding.
