Multiple Monitor Issue

Alright, so I have a 15" Macbook Pro with the dual graphics cards (GeForce 9600M GT and GeForce 9400M GT 256 version). It's the 2.66 intel processor one. Anyway, I've been trying to figure out this dual monitor issue that I've been having for a few days now. When I'm using the 9400M card and I plug into my mini displayport everything works just fine. This includes the VGA cord, the HDMI, as well as a standard Apple monitor. Now, when I switch over to the higher end graphics card, as soon as I plug into the mini displayport my screen goes black. And that's it. I can't do anything. I have to hold the power button down until the computer turns off.
I've been searching for days in order to find an answer to this question or if anyone has ever had a similar problem and no one could help me. I even went to the genius bar and no one could help either. Keep in mind I've tried this in a variety of ways. I've plugged the monitor in after the computer was running, I've had it plugged in while the computer was turning on, and each time after the initial boot up everything goes black.
To make matters worse, I originally came across this issue because I use Windows 7 on bootcamp and I wanted to use dual monitors within Windows. Bootcamp is only set to use the 9600M graphics card which is the one giving me all the heartache and apparently there's no way around it. If anyone has the slightest clue as to what's going on here or why it would be doing such a thing, let me know. Thanks.

Jon: Thanks for answering those questions. Run the Apple Hardware Test that you'll find on one of the DVDs that came with your MBP. If any errors are reported, go back to the Genius Bar with the error codes reported by AHT and ask to have the machine repaired.
If you have extended AppleCare protection, you have a TechTool Deluxe CD/DVD. You can also use that to test your hardware. If it reports any errors, take the exact wording and error codes from that report along with you to the GB, too.
The problem is not with your three external displays or your cables, adapters, or your MBP's mini-Displayport, because they all work fine with the 9400M. The problem isn't some wrong contact that's being made momentarily as you insert the mini-Displayport plug into the port, because it occurs even when the cable is securely connected before starting up the computer. It seems to me the problem must reside either in your 9600M GT or in its connection to the mini-displayport.

  • Windows 7 and Multiple Monitor Issues

Alright, I have spent the past 3 days searching these forums as well as on Microsoft's support pages and all of Google to find the answer to my issue and it seems as though I'm the only one who is running into this problem.
I have a 15 inch Macbook Pro with the GeForce 9600M GT Nvidia Graphics card with the latest version of Mac OSX and Bootcamp installed on it. I have Windows 7 installed in bootcamp. I just purchased a Mini DisplayPort to VGA cord with a VGA cord so as to connect my computer to my Sony Bravia HDTV to use as a second monitor. I plug in the cords, plug them into my TV, and put it into the proper input and it works like a charm. Then I go and boot up in bootcamp under Windows 7, plug in the cord, and my screen gets to the "starting windows" logo and then it goes black. I push ever button, I try control alt delete, nothing. I have to hold down the power button to turn off the computer and then turn it back on.
I turn it on, boot up into Windows 7, let it load, then plug in the cord, and the computer display instantly goes black, again, and yet nothing displays on the TV. Again, I try everything to no avail, so I power it off and back on. I go through this at least 10 times to no avail. I finally give up and try again the next day.
Next day, I plug it in, and the monitor stays up, but yet nothing is displayed on the TV. I go to my resolution settings in Windows, and go to the multiple monitors tab, and select every possible option (extend, duplicate, etc) and nothing will display on my TV. I try to change the settings to which it responds with "unable to save display settings" and nothing changes. I attempt to enter the nvidia program and make changes that way. The TV is detected, but when I select it and attempt to apply anything, no changes take effect and I am left with only the laptop display. Keep in mind I uninstalled and reinstalled all of the video drivers and such.
Finally I get fed up so I purchase a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapted and a DVI to HDMI adapter. I try again. Again in OSX it launches immediately, no problems. I go back into Windows, and immediately I'm dealing with the instant black screen.
I'm going crazy over here trying to figure this out. I know it's possible to do this because I've seen people on youtube doing this and again it works on OSX so why the heck won't it work? If anyone has any idea what's going on here please help me out. Thanks.

JonMarx... I'm having the exact same problem. I'm in the exact same situation as you are. I'm going mad, and it's only by divine providence that I've finally located the only other person who knows what I've been going through. I've spent at least 20 hours trying to get this started back up, to no avail.
I had the secondary display working peachy for a while, long enough to configure everything to be exactly how I wanted it. I unplugged the monitor from the computer just to see what would happen, and that's when the problems started. I managed to get it to work one last time for a brief period a few hours later, but the way it just clicked on made it feel too good to be true.
I've had a wierd problem with a phantom display as well. The display will frequently show up as being available in both the nVIDIA panel and the windows settings, but if I apply the settings, they won't go through. I got a few screenshots of it the last time it happened.
I was just about to reinstall windows completely, but it seems that I'll just run into the same problem again if I do... Here's to hoping a solution is found.

  • Multiple Monitors issue

A coworker has a T400 laptop that worked perfectly with multiple monitors up until recently.  Initially I thought the port went bad on the connector, but after veryifying it with the docking station, I am not able to get the connection to a secondary monitor.  The second monitor will work with other computers and the docking station will also get a second display when another laptop is plugged in.
Can anybody suggest what would be creating this issue outside of a hardware failure?
    Thank you.

    Hi Waynedegan,
    Thank you for the reply!
Check which version of Graphic driver is installed in your system?
Download the latest driver from the link & uninstall the current version installed. Install the downloaded driver.

  • Upgraded to 10.8.5 and now have multiple monitor issues

    hi all,
i recently updated my macpro (4,1) to 10.8.5 from 10.6.8.   i have two monitors hooked up to the gt120, one through dvi-->hdmi cable and one displayport-->hdmi cable.  both monitors have worked fine for a year or two before update.
my desktop extends across both screens just fine.  however, when i open up system preferences to adjust the color of the second monitor (using the display window on the second desktop) any changes i make affect the main monitor, not the second.   so i try changing color settings on the main monitor and it affects the main monitor, too.  so i have no control over the second monitor's color.
i have reset PRAM, disconnected power, etc.  i downloaded nvidia's latest driver.  not sure where to go from here.  btw - i am having other minor issues since upgrade such as  my moure (wacom intuos) won't move onto second monitor; it's stuck on main monitor.   my apple wireless mouse will span both desktops.  i guess it's probably unrelated but since it is affected by the monitors, too, maybe it's related.
    any thoughts?  thanks.

  • Multiple monitor issues with quicktime.

Hi, I can never get this issue sorted out with Quicktime. I run windows xp and use 2 screens. Whenever I open a quicktime movie it takes over one of my screens so I can't do anything on it except watch the quicktime movie. Is there a way I can run quick time so it runs only on the screen I have quicktime running and leave my other screen alone??
    Thanks,
    Syed.

Are your monitors set up correctly in the Display control panel settings for primary and secondary? I had a similar problem where a QT video would always open on the monitor to the left cannot remember how I resolved it, so thinking it might be the Display control panel. Or clearing recent in player prefs.

  • R9 270X Gaming 2G - Multiple Monitor Issues

    Greetings MSI and Community
I recently purchased two MSI R9 270X Gaming 2G graphics cards and three Asus VS248H monitors.
I want to run the cards in Crossfire and activate Eyefinity which I understand requires the third monitor to be plugged into the DisplayPort using an active adapter.
The issue: I am unable to change the resolution (from 640 x 480) on any monitor that is NOT plugged into DVI-I or HDMI on the graphics card closest to the CPU.
Windows is able to identify the monitor plugged into the DVI-I port as VS248 however the monitor plugged into DVI-D (on the same card) or DisplayPort is identified as a Generic Non-PnP Monitor with the resolution drop down box greyed out.
    I have tried the following:
    - swapping the graphics cards
    - swapping all of the connections to monitors
    - disabling and re-enabling crossfire
    - uninstalling and re-installing drivers; tried Catalyst Software Suite 13.9, 13.10, 13.11, 13.101 (on MSI's website).
I am currently running the latest Beta drivers because of fixes to the screen moving.
I have been uninstalling drivers using Driver Fusion Premium. Also tried uninstalling using ATIman however the result is the same.
I have spent about 20 hours trying to resolve this issue so if anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. I am honestly at the point that if I can't resolve this issue I will be returning both of the cards for another brand.

Perhaps your BSOD is related to the BSOD I got from not having updated my drivers thoroughly, and left old driver fragments.
See my post about it here: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=182037.msg1307746#msg1307746
I have not had a BSOD since I updated my driver in the correct way, by following the instructions laid out by the good people in this forum.

As far as the two problems I had with the power plan. They are resolved now.
After updating to the latest Intel Management Engine Drivers, the monitor is responding, as it should.
What is preventing the system from entering sleep mode, is unrelated to the GPU or any other hardware for that matter. Embarrassingly I did not run the CMD command "powercfg -requests" to find out, before I posted the question.
It seems I am a little too trigger happy posting questions here  It is my internet connection that is preventing the system from entering hybrid sleep mode.

  • Multiple monitor issues

10 is running on a VAIO laptop using nvidia 310m, now when plugging in HDMI second monitor the laptop reduces from a native 1600x900 to 1366x768 with side banding, the second monitor displays normally. Remove the monitor, the laptop returns to native resolution.

  • Surface Pro 3, Remote Desktop, multiple monitors, Windows 8.1 DPI scaling issues

I have been evaluating Surface Pro 3 and once of the attributes is the display. Here is the description of the environment and the remote desktop display issue.
Surface Pro 3 (Windows 8.1 with latest firmware and Windows updates) has 12 inch built-in screen with native resolution 2160x1440. The Surface is docked and an external monitor (native resolution 1920x1080) is connected to the docking stations. The
display configuration doesn't allow for different scaling for each monitor, single scaling value is used for multiple monitors. This is an issue as the recommended scaling of 150% is optimal for small built-in screen of Surface but it is not optimal for
large screens of external monitors. Also this scaling is "inherited" by a remote desktop session which results in objects being too large on the remote desktop sessions or sometimes even blurry/fuzzy.
Can the blurriness/fuzziness of the remote desktop session be resolved?
    Z

    Hi Colin,
Thanks for the response. I installed the latest firmware and patches about a week ago and the scaling issue improved. It is not optimal yet as some graphical elements are still out of proportions but I do not want to spent more resources on this subject
    anymore.

  • Multiple monitor DPI Issues (Desktop not Metro)

    Hi,
I have a Lenovo Yoga 2 pro with Win 8.1, which has an ultra high resolution (3,200X1,800) and I am using it with a Targus docking station.  In order to see things, I have the custom DPI scaling set at 250%.  Here is the problem, when i use the docking
station with an external monitor that has a maximum of 1900X1200, Metro looks nice, but anything on the desktop (office and other desktop only programs), everything is HUGE and unusable.  If I try to set DPI scaling for multiple monitors, I can no longer
use my custom 250% DPI for the Lenovo, instead, I am given a slider that makes the external monitor look nice, but when the laptop is removed, it is so small that I'd need a magnifying glass to see.  If I want to use a docking station, I have to change
the DPI scaling every time I switch between being docked and as a standalone, which requires me to go through all of the steps to switch and then log out and log back in.  Is there a way to have custom DPIs for each monitor?  I think this will only
become a bigger problem as more companies develop higher resolution devices.
    Thanks,
    Dean

Same issue here. I have looked on a lot of forums, and there are a lot of people who just don't understand the issue - offering completely irrelevant advice!
As with a number of others on this thread, I have a Surface Pro 3... fantastic machine, and beautiful display. But connect my external 1080x1920 24" display, and everything is too large on the external... so as with everyone else, I have to set the
Change the size of all items option in display settings, set it to the smallest value, then log out, and log back in. That fixes the external display, but...
Having to make this setting change every time I connect or disconnect to an external monitor is annoying enough... but having to log out, and then log back in to see the change is ridiculous!
But what REALLY annoys me is that I like to use extended display mode - I love to work with two monitors - my lapyop and external display side by side. With the scaling set to lowest, so that the external display looks correct, the Surface Pro 3 screen is
just unusable - its too small, and gives me a headache trying to use it. It makes me feel like an old man complaining that "owwww its too small for my old eyes!".
I realise that this is a Windows issue - but heck, if the Surface Pro 3 is really the tablet to replace my laptop, this flaw in Windows makes the SP3 a NON laptop replacement. Using dual monitor setups with my portable is essential to how I work.
I almost can't believe that in 2014 Windows still does not have proper per monitor PPI settings. Technology has landed a probe on a bloody comet for crying out loud - why can't Windows have proper UI scaling per monitor??!!
What really scares me is that I dont think this is a simple fix for MS, and it may be some time before we see this resolved... but here's hoping Microsoft are already working on s solution.
I'd like to see a Microsoft representative give us an official update on this issue... Hello? Are you out there?

  • You cannot shadow a session with multiple monitors enabled in Windows Server 2008 R2

Searching through the forums (and according to KB2484290) it appears that there is no solution to this problem.  We are rolling out thin clients that are using dual monitors exclusively and we were very surprised to find out that we couldn't shadow
sessions with dual monitors (which to us means that we can't shadow ANY sessions).  This now completely changes our approach to managing these devices.
We are running Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 with Remote Desktop Services installed.  The thin clients are running Windows Embedded Standard 7 with the latest updates / RDP client. All steps have been followed to ensure that the apropriate settings and
permissions have been set up to allow access into the session.
We tested by unchecking the RDP setting “use all my monitors for the remote session”, with that setting disabled shadowing worked
    Questions:
    1. KB2484290 is from Dec 2010 - It's now April 2012, is there a workaround / hotfix for this issue that will allow us to shadow sessions using the native Microsoft tools?
    2. Are there any recommended alternatives (software)?  Free/Paid - doesn't matter we just need something that will work.  I'm sure there are a few options out there but I am looking for suggestions for what people have used in the past that worked
best for them to help us narrow down the choices.

    Hi,
In my experience, so far, the workaround is Remote Assistance, Remote Assistance supports multiple monitors, and is the presently recommended solution if you need this functionality. Remote Assistance is a Windows Server Feature that must be explicitly installed
on Windows Server 2008 R2; it is already installed with the client versions of the operating system.

As far as I know, there are some third-party tools can be used as the solution, such as Teamviewer, ISL Online, etc.

  • VMware Fusion question - Multiple Monitors

I apologize if this is in the wrong area, but I am desperate for some help. I have also posted this same question in the VMware communities but I have not had any luck with anyone responding yet.
It seems that I am having an issue with my virtual machine (windows XP) viewing in full screen or unity across my multiple monitor setup on my Mac Pro. Every time I go to view in full screen or unity I get a VMware popup warning/error that reads:
The virtual machine "Windows XP Professional" is configured for a smaller display size than the one your Mac is currently using. VMware Fusion needs to shut down your virtual machine to enable support for your Mac's display size in Full Screen. Do you want to shut down this virtual machine now?
I have two options, one to shut down, or one to go into full screen. If I go into full screen, full screen works with the correct resolution and everything looks great except its only in the one monitor (not the multiple monitor). If I shut down and restart the virtual machine and try to go to full screen I get the same error.
The VMware tools have been installed and I did go to the view, use all displays in full screen opiton.
My current setup is a mac pro with 3 monitors using 2 NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT Video Cards.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

I found a link to a VMWare Knowledge Base entry about specifying video ram in Fusion 1. Maybe it is still true.

  • How do I operate multiple monitors on my HP Pavilion Slimline Pavilion s3600t?

    Hello HP Forum,
I am looking to operate 2 monitors on my HP Pavilion Slimline Pavilion s3600t that currently has GeForce 7100/NVIDIA nForce 630i.  I am not a computer technician and only semi-tech saavy (less than more).  I was told I needed a video card; however, I don't know what I need nor how to install it. Can anyone tell me what I type of video card I need to purchase (and why) and then point me to a video or instructions on install?
Further, what would it take for a computer to operate 3 monitors?  Would this computer capable of operating 3 monitors? And what would that entail/how does it compare to installing options for 2 monitors?
    Thanks for your help guys!

  • Feature Request - Better Multiple Monitor Support

Lightroom's support for a second display has definitely helped my  workflow. I hope the team will consider adding more flexible multiple  monitor support in version 4. Here's why.
I've recently  experimented with running one of my three screens in portrait mode. When  this screen hosts Lightroom's secondary display window in Loupe view,  my verticals finally get equal real estate for editing. While I've not  done hard statistics on my library, I know more than 50% of my imagery  is in portrait orientation.
I'd like to see LR V4 support three or more screens so I could set up as follow:
Screen 1 - main lightroom interface, would not need to be calibrated, for controls and navigation
Screen  2 - Portrait orientation, loupe view - this would be a calibrated  display, all develop changes to verticals would be judged on this screen
Screen  3 - Landscape orientation, loupe view - another calibrated display, all  develop changes to horizontals would be judged on this screen
If  Adobe could make the app intelligent enough to route the image to the  correct screen based on orientation (recognizing and respecting cropping  that could change orientation) my edit sessions would certainly speed  up and I could maximize the productivity of multiple screens.
I'd  be happy with this, but I'm also stymied by the need to switch back to  Library mode to tag images when my primary workflow has me in develop.  Ultimately everything depends on the quality of the image. Before I  invest in image-specific meta data, I have to process or at least  "test-process" an image. IMO the Quick Develop panel is useless, once  you become accustomed to the granular control of the develop sliders, it  just doesn't cut it.
In the three monitor setup I described  above I'd love to be able to configure screen 1, with a combination of  panels from Library and Develop, so I could stay "develop centric" with  immediate access to keywording and meta. The two additional screens  would intelligently handle image display.
I think this might  speed my workflow by 33% and having just returned from a Tour de France  project that generated 23,000 images I need all the productivity help I can  get.

Thanks for all those votes Rob. Now we just need to get the other 999,999 on board.
Actually, this topic has come up a lot on this forum. At this point, I think we just need to get Adobe on board.
    VeloDramatic wrote:
There may be another thread for this one additional thought. If Adobe does improve multiple monitor support, we should be able to optimize our previews for those screens. Even after prerendering 1:1 previews there are issues with DEVELOP doing its own thing (I believe) each time a new image is loaded. I make extensive use of the PREVIOUS button moving through my shoots and there's always a lag of one or two seconds while the develop preview loads before the button is active. In a desktop environment where multiple screens allow landscape and portrait images to be displayed full screen I'd argue that 100% of the host screen resolution would be the ideal preview. Hope that made sense.
Yes, faster switching would be nice. I'm not sure what that would take. As it stands, there's like "9" previews generated when you do 1:1s - 100% down to tiny thumbnails. Still, one at exact monitor size that does not need to be resized at all does seem like it would be the fastest - I'm a bit on a limb though at this point.
