I'm trying to get the 3rd monitor on Slot2 to work as a preview monitor within FCP. OSX picks up the monitor as a usable device and i can output video to it through other apps such as Quicktime etc so no problem from a OS point of view. however, in FCP i do not get an option to output video to this display, it's simply not listed. the display in question is a 22" Samsung 1080p LCD connected via a DVI Lead into the second out of the four cards. It says no display connected but it's clearly working with a full output from the rest of OSX.
any pointers would be great.
Thanks,
Jon

I did the typical; post a question then play around with the problem routine here.
I've found a solution where i put the "playout monitor" on the same card as screen 1. move screen 2 to another card and make the relevant adjustments to the displays arrangement panel so everything is the same layout as before. FCP now plays out to the correct monitor it seems it can't handle sending to other cards.
i'm running 10.5.8 and FCP 6.0.6

  • Graphics going bad -- Monitor or graphics card failure?

My graphics are starting to go haywire.  It came on sort of gradually.  The screen is all pixelated, and it's dominated by red pixels.
My sense is that it's a hardware failure, not a software problem.  But how can I determine if it's the monitor, or the graphics card?
The monitor is not an Apple -- it's a Dell.  And I don't have a spare, or I would just plug in another monitor.
The computer is a 2-year old Mac Pro, with an Nvidia graphics card.
    Any help?
    thanks,
    Mike

99% sure it's probably the card. At least that's the way for me anyway.
As @X423424 said, at least try to reseat the card and don't forget to unplug and replugin the video cable also.
Take the cover off the side and look to see if the video card fan is spinning or if it's completely packed with dust. If it's clogged with dust or the fan died then you have a 40/60 chance it will be fine once the fan works again.
If you know anyone with a computer, Mac/Windows, ask if you can check out the monitor before spending any hard earned cash on a new card, eh?

  • Multi monitor/different graphic cards

    Hi
I have an MSI Z97-G45 motherboard, and have a Visiontek ATI Radeon 5570 graphics card installed on it. I have a  Nvidia Geforce GT610 graphics card that I also want to install since I want to run extra monitors. Please can someone let me know if this is possible, or will they conflict?
    I have an I7-4770 processor
    Many thanks
    Mike

you will have a conflict between the drivers as you have a AMD and Nvidia set of drivers that will need to be installed and they share the same Regestery keys so it will be a mess!
if you need more outputs get another card that is the same Maker either AMD or Nvidia that use the same drivers as each other!

  • Video Monitor and Graphics Card- Your using and happy with!

Wondering what the group is using for LCD monitor/Graphics card pairing for your MacPro.  Interested on those above the 27" Apple Display
    thx

Okay, I'll bite. I have a Dell 30" 3007WFP LCD with an Acer 22" LCD on each side. The three monitors run off a ATI Radeon HD 5770. The Dell 30" runs off the bigger DVI port and the two Acers run off mini DVI ports.
I had to buy two ACTIVE mini DVI to DVI adapters to make them work. The regular adapters won't work with three monitors.
    They all play happy together.

  • Multiple High End graphics cards

Does anyone know if the Mac Pro is able to use multiple Quadro FX 4500's or possibly a Quadro FX 4500 X2. And if this is not possible, would a Quadro FX 4500 in addition to one of the consumer cards work? I require at least 4 graphics outputs (2 to drive a walleye stereo wall, and 2 to use with desktop monitors) and would prefer to use the Quadros to the 7300's at least for the stereo wall and if possible I would like to get the same level of performance on the desktop monitors.
    Thanks

Based on careful reading of the recently released development notes
    <http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/Conceptual/HWTechVideo/Articles/Video_implementation.html#//appleref/doc/uid/TP40003994> and
    <http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/Conceptual/HWtechPCI/Articles/pci_implementation.html#//appleref/doc/uid/TP40003937>,
it may be possible to install two ATI Radeon X1900 XT cards, one in slot 1, and one in slot 2 (also covering slot 3). The PCI bus would be set to x8 x8 x1 x8.
The configuration would meet all the cooling and power restrictions. There are auxiliary power connectors for both slots 1 and 2.
This would give you four displays (all could be up to 30") with independent resolution and rotation.
It is not a standard configuration, so you would order the Mac Pro with one ATI Radeon X1900 XT and order the second as an add-on
<http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/6.RSLID?mco= 220D662A&nplm=MA631Z%2FA>. Note where it says:
    "System Requirements:
Mac Pro with available double-wide PCI Express slot or two standard slots". They wouldn't say that if it was only allowed in slot 1 (the only double-wide slot).
There would still be one empty slot, x8, with 36 watts available.
You might also be able to use two Nvidia Quadro FX 4500 boards if you could find a second board. That would leave 80 watts for the last slot. I don't think you get display rotation with Nvidia boards.

  • P6N SLI Platinum - multiple monitors and vid cards

I want to run 4 monitors using 2 video cards. I've been doing this for several years now but this is my first
upgrade to pci express. Right now I have a geforce 8800gts in the first -16 slot and a geforce 7300gs in the second slot. I finally got it working but I am wondering if the performance of the 8800gts will be reduced in this config. It took me several hours of  before I figured out that the switch card has to be in the SLI position to enable the second slot. (Wasnt trying to setup SLI so I naturally thought....)
If I cant run the 8800 gts at full performance in this config is it possible to use a regular PCI video card as the second card?

    Thanks for the quick response
So, both slots will be running at x8? Is that the only performance hit? I like to play fairly fast games sometimes(1 monitor) which is why I bought the 8800gts. The rest of the time I use the other monitors for monitoring the markets and general computing.

  • MacPro Graphics Card Options

Do any of the graphics card up-grades available for the MacPro justify the expense? Does FCE utilize the GPU or only the CPU?

If you're running multiple monitors a graphics upgrade will help quite a bit for those effects. Otherwise maybe not so much. It depends entirely on what you're doing and how much you're using those effects and what else you're doing with your video.

  • How can you tell if your video/graphics card is failing?

I have been playing World of Warcraft for over 7 months now (insert geek jokes here), and I have never experienced the problems that I have been experiencing with WoW this weekend.
I was hoping that it was just a connection/internet issue with WoW, but when i play on my laptop (and older Powerbook G4), screen loads aren't slow like they are on my Intel iMac.
Yesterday and today have been horrible. I'll get disconnected at least 4-5 times (which NEVER happens) and when I am finally logged into my account for game play, it's horrible lag. And even then, it takes a while for the background or other characters to load.
I'm worried that it's my video/graphics card and might be failing. How would I know if this was the case?
I am still hoping it's just a connectivity issue and has nothing to do with my card. But I don't know at this point.
    I'm very frustrated.
Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Suzanne

Wow, ok, sounds like you are on the exact same path that I'm on. I'm a WOW player also, have had my iMac since 2008 (and play wow alot, raiding, etc) and recently it fried it's graphics card. I just replied to your thread about HDDs... so please see that response.
I'm convinced it's a heat issue and I have a feeling the latest OSX update may have changed something about the fan speed that caused extra heat to build up. Just a theory.
Anyway, your options are very limited for "fixing" a screwed up graphics card. Hopefully you have AppleCare, otherwise you're looking at ~$500 to fix this.
I'm not going to bother. Just bought a new monitor and graphics card for my 4y.o. Windows machine and will be using that from now on. I'll miss the Apple display and the operating system, but the hardware doesn't make me happy at all.
    Good luck!

  • If your Intel graphics card has jumpy performance

Use Method 2 (obviously method 1 won't work for Arch)
I have an intel 915 GM in my thinkpad.  Video would not play smoothly.  I used Method 2 and it is much better.

  • Best Graphics card for a 30" and a 23"?

My office gave me a 23" ACD for my Power Mac G5 and a 19" Sony LCD for the second monitor.
I work with Final Cut and Motion extensively and want to upgrade to a 30" ACD and keep the 23" ACD as my 2nd monitor.
my graphics card is the ATI Radeon 9650. I know that will run a 30", but i can't figure out if it will run both the 30" and the 23".
And if it does, will it be overloaded?
    Thanks.

  • Z68A-GD55-G3 + i5-2500 doesn't recognize my graphic card

    Hello Gentlemen,
I've upgraded my MB and CPU to Z68A-GD55-G3 and Core i5-2500 recently and faced with big problem.
My Radeon 6950(it's also MSI, BTW) is not recognized by new system. I've connected my monitor to Graphic card and just see a black screen all the time. Graphic card's fan works.
I tried to connect monitor to integrated graphics's output and it works. I don't see my Radeon 6950 recognized in Device manager in windows.
Also, I tried my old Radeon 3870 on this MB. Result is the same, but it works fine on my second PC.
    Virtu Technology - Disabled
    Initiate Graphics Adapter - PEG
I haven't installed any virtu drivers and bios wasn't updated. Also, I haven't reinstalled my windows, but I don't believe it may cause such problem
I guess that this is due to integrated GPU and it should be disabled somehow.
    Gurus, Can you help me?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello again!
Had a conversation with a guy from service center and he said that most likely there is broken south bridge in my MB and they can't help me with this.
And warranty won't apply for this MB anymore because I had broken socket :(
Just wondering does southbridge somehow responcible for GPU?
I thought that northbridge is responcible for this and it's in CPU. So it seems to me that they don't really know what the problem is.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!
I returned a Z68 GD65 G3 because some of the pins were slightly bent.  I observed when I did my initial inspection of the MB just a few days after I bought it.  Returned it to store withing the 30 day return period.
Since your MB is now out of warranty  you may be able to slightly bend that pin to match the others.  Just be very careful. (Do at your own risks).
Are you able to get a hold of a a different cpu that has a igpu and see if you can get the display working without the video card?
I have read about problems with the display not working.  The latest BIOS should have all that fixed.

  • Mac pro - multiple graphics cards - multiple monitors - gaming?

    Hi there
Early 2008 I purchased a mac pro, with 2 8800gts and 1 2600xt. Works amazingly well, as it was originally purchased for number crunching (video cards were purchased to take advantage of openCL in snow leopard) and more screen realestate. (3 monitors)
But the thought occurred to me... I am also a bit of a gamer...
Are there any games that take advantage of multiple video cards???
Mac or windows game recommendations are welcomed!
    Thanks!

I'm sorry if my question was a little ambiguous, let me try to rephrase.
If anyone is familiar with the Nintendo DS system, you will understand that this handheld device has 2 screens.. one is used primarily as a game screen, the second screen has the game map or console or some kind of readout or whatever. Bottom line is, the game takes advantage of 2 screens.
My question to the masses is:
Are there any games in Mac OS or Windows that take advantage of multiple monitors, and therefore multiple video cards. Not SLI or Crossfire as I understand the Mac Pro hardware does not support it. My question relates to any software titles like Flight Simulators, that can render images on 2 screens connected to 2 separate video cards.
I have a copy of XPlane, and unfortunately, it only supports multiple monitors on a single video card, not multiple monitors on multiple video cards.
    So, just rehashing,
Are there any games that are capable of rendering images or gameplay on 2 different video cards at the same time?
    If so, what are they?
Cheers and sorry for the confusion.

  • Are multiple graphics cards without multiple monitors helpful?

I have a Mac Pro with two graphics cards in it, but only one monitor. (I was/am considering getting some more monitors but haven't done so yet. The monitor is hooked up to the more powerful graphics card.) I was just wondering if, in theory or practice, there's any benefit to having a graphics card in the Mac without a monitor hooked up to it? OpenCL should mean that the Mac is able to take advantage of the processing and VRAM capacity of the card even if it's not generating pixels to be output, right? Maybe I just answered my own question.

There can be if you have a GTX 680 for CUDA and use an AMD card for monitors IF the program or plugins are written to do so. normally, no.

No, Keynote takes over all the screens when presenting, and I'd think if you tried to edit in FCP when you were also running a show (if you could) it would likely bog BOTH programs down badly.
You could export your presentations into QT and have the QT player running on one screen, but still, if you fire up FCP, everything's a different ball game then.
I suggest leaving the FCP system on its own, don't try to do multiple things with it at the same time.
