Multiple Music Files: New to MAC

I am a new MAC user (long time PC user) - I have brought my music over from my PC and it is stored in several different folders in "Documents". I have dragged these folders to iTunes and now have all of my music on. On my MAC in "PLACES - MUSIC - iTUNES - iTUNES MUSIC" I now see all of my songs. Can I now delete all of the folders storing music files from the "Documents" folder? I don't want to delete if I am going to lose it all and have to start over. Thanks for the help!

Yes you can delete the ones outside the iTunes folder. iTunes makes copies of what you add to its own folder structure and no longer uses the original, so the original can be deleted.
To check a track and see where iTunes is accessing it, pick the song in iTunes, do a Get Info on the track and in the first tab at the bottom it will show you the file path. If the path shows it getting to it in the iTunes -> iTunes Music folder structure, then you can safely delete any other copies on your hard drive.

  • How can I completely remove music files from my mac? (sorry if repost)

I am currently enjoying a 15' MacBook Pro (Mac Os X 10.6.4) and have upgraded to Itunes 10. Recently, I decided to delete all my music files and start over. To avoid duplicate files I followed the advice on this link - (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1224) ; However, when I downloaded Itunes 10 again, my music was still there. Please help! I really want to start with a clean slate and have the peace of mind, knowing that there are no hidden music files on my mac taking up space. Looking forward to some great help.

Recently, I decided to delete all my music files and start over.
Why? Much easier to clean up what you do have.
To avoid duplicate files I followed the advice on this link -(http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1224)
That simply removes the iTunes application. It will not remove any of the library or media files.
All the media files and library files are in /Music/iTunes/ folder.
Recently, I decided to delete all my music files and start over.
Do you have these music files stored elsewhere? You do not get to redownload any iTunes store purchases.

  • Will music match alter the music files on the mac if they were cd imports in lossless format?

Will music match alter the music files on my mac if they were cd imports in lossless format?

Songs on your computer do not get replaced. You have to delete then redownload them
If the songs are not Matched, they will be uploaded from your computer in whatever format they currently are.
However, the iTunes Match license states, "If the song is not successfully matched, your copy of the song will be uploaded to Apple in the same format or a format determined by Apple" so they could get re-encoded.
If the songs do match and you downlaod them, they will be 256 kbps AAC.

  • Can I transfer music files from my mac to my new pc?

I was wondering if there is any way I can transfer my iPod files from my mac unto my pc (without deleeting them). How do I do this and can someone provide me the link to the original (4 GB) iPod Mini software like on the disk, because I seem to have lost mine.

Probably the easiest way to use an iPod on both Mac and Windows computers is to format the iPod (using iPod Updater) using the PC. This will force your iPod to use the Windows file system (FAT32) which both the Mac and PC can read from and write to without the help of additional software. Of course then all your software updates for the iPod will have to be done on Windows. If you need to use a Mac (HFS+) formatted iPod on a Windows PC, you'll need to install some 3rd party software such as XPlay 2.0 (which you can get from MediaFour Software). This will enable your Windows PC to read a Mac-formatted iPod.
However, please be aware that Apple does not officially support cross platform use.
The iPod updater software is here.

  • Need help transferring Music Files & Playlist from Mac Book to iMAC

I am having difficulty transferring my music files and playlists from my Macbook to my iMAC. All of the music goes over well but the playlists, comments and ratings do not. Any assistance in this area would be greatly appreciated.

Copy the entire \Music\iTunes\ folder from your MacBook to your iMac.
The link posted by WoggleDog deals only with moving the iTunes music folder on one computer to a different location to use on that same computer.

  • Multiple music files locations- need to be consolidated!

I currently have music in 5 different locations on my internal hard drive (don't ask). I just purchased an external hard drive, and would like to consolidate all the music to that drive in one location. How do I do this without having to "repoint" itunes to the new file location for every single individual song? I can't do that 4,000 times- I will lose my marbles...
    Thank you...

Just did this myself. Change the location where you have told iTunes to import files to. Then use consolidate option. It will take a long time depending on total size of files to COPY. Once change is made and verified you can, at your option, delete the original files. After doing this you must always have external drive attached and ready before opening iTunes.

I just got my first mac 3 days ago so can't figure anything out. I just got married a couple of weeks ago, my brother-in-law filmed it with his Sony HD?-SR11 and he sent me a hard drive with the 3 different clips that he had filmed. I can't get anything to play, I usually am computer literate but not on this thing (yet). Any help would be appreciated please be specific! Thanks in advance,

  • Multiple Music Files in Slideshow

  • Can I simply copy and paste an existing library file from XP to a Mac and then copy and paste the music files themselves? Of course, the music files will be in a different location...

    Hello Gurus,
I have an aged XP machine with a large music library in ITunes. iTunes will not run any longer (tried uninstalling and reinstalling etc to no avail) but the music files are backed up onto an external drive so all safe. I have purchased a Mac which of course already has iTunes installed and I can copy the music files onto the Mac, but can I simply copy and paste the iTunes library files from the XP machine to the Mac so that all of the playlists, tags, ratings etc transfer, or do I have to start again?
    Thanks for the advice.

Sounds like you have a split library. Ideally you would make this portable before attempting to move it to the Mac. See make a split library portable for details.
Perhaps you can get iTunes running on the old box long enough to sort things out...
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
You will also want to deauthorize the XP system once everything is working properly on the Mac.

  • Renaming Music Files

How does one rename a music file on a mac? In a folder, can I click to let the artist, album, track info show up? On a PC, one could edit the tags and rename a music file by right click > properties and also sort the files by album info, artist name, track, genre, etc. info. How is this achieved on a mac?
When I edit my music tags in itunes, it seems to be only temporary because once I delete the file from itunes and re-add it, the file name and info is the same as before and needs to be edited again.
    Thanks for the help.

Hi canht. Renaming in iTunes is the right way to do it. Ditto trashing and rearranging. To do it otherwise, in Finder for eg, can mess up your iTunes library. Of course you will have to rename again if you trash something and put it back. Trashing it trashes its name as well as the song.
To change details in iTunes, click on the track, hit ⌘ I, click the info tab and edit accordingly. For all the tracks in an album if you want to add the album name/artist/genre for eg, click on one track, hit ⌘ A, then info etc. You will get a box asking if you want to edit multiple items. Hit yes or OK. Good to go.
    Have fun!

  • Help Locating music files after transferring  using Windows Migrartion Assistant

I am new to mac I just bought a new MacBook Pro Friday. I have an iPod, iPhone, and an, iPad that I need to get setup on my Mac. The way I have them setup on my Windows 7 PC is I can select wich iTunes library to open by pressing the shift key while clicking on the iTunes icon. My first question is can I set that up like that on the Mac as well? Also I used Windows Migrartion Assistant to transfer my music files from my windows 7 PC to my Mac after the transfer was finished I cannot locate the music files on the Mac anywhre. Can anyone help.

Apparently the old external drive is going bad. I turned it off and waited an hour or so and restarted it, and all my files were back. I have copied them to my PC hard drive to be safe. However, my iTunes is now totally screwed up. Although the music files are back where they were (for now), iTunes cannot find any songs except the few that were copied to the new drive when I did the consolidate. I tried the Consolidate Library again and it stops because it cannot find the files. Am I going to have to point iTunes to the location of every song, one at a time, for over 2800 songs?
