Multiple OS's on one Mac

Greetings!
Part of my home network consists of a Quicksilver Power Mac. To make a long story as short as possible, , I need to keep 10.2 because of some Apps i Like, I want to keep OS 9 becaus I'm a sentimental sop and I have to install a version of OSX to which I can use Backup (.Mac). Backup for 10.5. does not work very well with anything below 10.4 and I'm using my Quicksilver as a backup server for my (now 10.5, formerly 10.4) iMac.
OK, I've got my nice, new install DVD with 10.4....
I wanted to leave OS 9 & 10.2.8 on the original 40 GB Drive and install 10.4 on the added 200 GB drive (which is connected via a controller). Tiger installs ok & is listed as a possible startup location in sys pref. but when trying to start everything ends at a gray screen with a gray apple . No turning wheel etc. Starting from the small drive (OS 9 or 10.2) is ok. Checked permissions and drive, zapped pram
I suspect that I will have to install 10.4 on the smaller drive (plenty of space left) for booting, but would like to keep the 10.2 configuration for certain purposes. Any ideas?
Thanx for any input on this
Jacques

Needed more space and got a 200 GB Drive before realizing that the built-in controller could not access  that much...
Connecting the drive to the built-in controller would force me to reformat the drive (smaller) and lose quite a few backup files.
What I'm dreading is shifting everything to the 200 GB drive (CCCloner), formatting and partitioning the 40 GB drive and re-installing OS 9 & 10.2 in one partition and 10.4 on another. This would be the ultima ratio if booting off the 200 GB drive just won't work, but since it is listed in sys pref I suspect you may be right about the bad install
oh, btw, I did format the drive MacOS Extended/HFS+

  • Multiple IP adress on one mac address?

    Hi!!
I have a WLC 2504 and AP 1602. Is it possible to give the client multiple ip addresses with one mac address. If yes, how it's made on WLC or AP?

In certain cases there is a need to have multiple IP addresses responding beyond a single client wireless association. For example, some video cameras will have an internal communication module that tied to wireless interface via ethernet. Some PoS devices may have similar requirement.
In WLC there is an option WLAN->WirelessID->Advanced->Passive Client.
Now I am not sure if this will work with multiple IP addresses tied to the same MAC or not.

  • Talking amongst multiple computers with only one .mac acct

We have multiple computers but only one .mac account. We would like to isight/ichat with our home-based computers from our laptops (ie: talk with the kids at home while we're on the road...) but can't figure out how to make it work. Do we need to set up SEPARATE .mac accounts ("Family Plan") in order to isight/ichat amongst our computers or can we arrange it all, using only one account?

    Magpie is right.
You can get FREE AIM Name(s) here.
You can also get additional free dot mac names if you like. The names will continue to work as iChat names after the free trial (and other dot mac features) expire.

  • HT204074 Multiple Apple IDs on one Mac

I have 2 different user accounts on my MacBook Air. Both users have their own iTunes Library with their own AppleID.
Is my understanding correct that it is not possible to use both accounts independently as only one Apple ID can "use" the Mac at a time ?
Furthermore, if user A has its Apple ID associated to the Mac, user B is unable to use iTunes Match on the same Mac for it's account (at least not for another 90 days) ?
Thx in advance for any solution allowing user A and B to share one Mac (including iTunes) as if it was two physically seperate computers. The goal for me would be to have 1 Mac used by 2 users (each one having it's own account) with 2 Apple IDs (ID 1 for user A - ID 2 for user B).

    Hello Kevin and redskylux-
Just wanted to add another post and try to gain some group traction: Apple support has lately been refering users to "check the Apple forums" for solutions. As such, I am hoping Apple management will be parsing and reading these forums for suggestions on improvement and current issues with their products.
From the perspective of system administration and isolating financial responsibility to individual user accounts, the process Apple employs to limit future transfers, even to separate user accounts, on the same machine for 90 days is simply draconian. A server operating system is dedicated to the idea that multiple user accounts are supported on a single physical machine. Apple's current methods would severly retard the abilities for mutliple users to make use of the same machine for using iTunes and related content. For example, user A is allowed to log in to a machine and make use of iPhoto, MS Excel (under Office for Mac), and many other programs while user B is also using an account, via VNC or other remote desktop product from an iPad or a different location off site. That's the whole point: multiple users to the same machine to co-utilize resources.
The iTunes account scenario and a 90 day wait between transfers is a seriously ridiculous constraint. How about every Apple employee who uses a piece of software on an Apple server, must first check to see if any other Apple employee has used the desired software within the previous 90 days? If so, user A must wait until user B has not used the software within the previous 90 days. Sound like a terrible situation? It is!
Come on Apple, surely you can devise a better method.
Separate Mac OS X user accounts, each with separate Apple ID's must have independent access to the materials associated with individual user accounts on the SAME Mac OS device. The above process, at the least, would allow a local backup of iTunes content to a single machine. Having all content backed up to a single machine supports the opportunity for keeping an organized localy controlled backup.
Perhaps the solution will be to create multiple copies of virtual machines on the Mac OS X device and then each user can (with a virtual MAC address) have their own Apple iTunes account on the same machine, without having to sit and wait 90 days for Apple to release the lock?
Hope you find a solution: I am planning to test out the VM solution (real Mac OS X which contains multiple VM Mac OS X machines)

  • Can you sync multiple IOS devices to one Mac?

Is it possible to sync, say, both an iPod Touch (or iPhone) AND an iPad to the same user account on one Mac? I assume it must be possible, otherwise what would folks with an iPod/iPhone and an iPad do?
What are the caveats, if any?
How about two different IOS devices associated with the same MobileMe user account? Any issues there?

No problem with any of this at all, including mobile me
You can choose different sync options for each device if you wish, and MobileMe can be set up on multiple devices with no problems, they will all keep in sync with each other.

  • Multiple users on computer - one .mac account

ok, I've seen other posts addressing similar issues, but not this specific one:
I have two users on my computer and one .Mac account. I would like each user to be able to edit and post to the same website using iWeb.
I thought that I could move the Domains.sites file to a shared location, but I can find no way of pointing iWeb to that location and then remembering that location later.
    any thoughts??

This might not be the right way but since I was having similar issues today, this something that worked.
I placed the domain.site file on my time capsule and the Imac which I created the pages with remembered the site.
On my mac mini I can access the site it if I open the domain.site file directly using the finder and it will then open iweb on my mac mini. If I open iweb directly, it seems to remember previous iweb sites that I created but not the current one.
    Hope this helps.
If anyone else has another way please let us know.

  • Can I have multiple iTunes accounts on one Mac?

My daughters got iPods for Christmas, and we are wanting to set them up with their own Apple IDs, but only use one Mac computer for syncing, etc.  Will this work?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Seperate iTunes accounts should be dealt with by using seperate user accounts on the Mac itself. You shouldn't be logging in and out of iTunes accounts in the same user account.

  • Multiple Apple Tv's One Mac.

If I have three Apple tv's will I be able to sync from one mac?
With the new movie rental format if we rent a movie on one apple tv will we be able to see it on the other two in other rooms?

So if i bought another apple tv for my bedroom (currently have a 40gig in living room), i couldn't rent a movie in living room, then finish it in bedroom, or vice versa?
Curious of another scenario - if i BOUGHT a movie via itunes, and stream it to apple tv in living room. Stop the movie with 20 minutes left, want to finish it in bedroom..if streamed from itunes, would it pick up right where i left off?

  • Multiple iTunes Accounts on One Mac

For years my kids have shared our family iTunes account.  However, they are getting to the point where I want to give them their own iTunes gift cards as presents for purchases, as well as giving my wife her own card to purchase items.  If I buy one card for the family account, invariably either my wife or one of the kids will use the card up without the other being able to purchase what they want.
So I just want to set up iTunes so that they each get their own iTunes account and they are able to access their prior purchases that were made on the family account.  Both kids have mac laptops, iPads and iPhones (a bit spoiled I know, but mostly hand-me-downs).
Ultimately, my question is whether each kid can have their own separate iTunes account and still have access to their old purchases from the joint account and access to their new content?  Really, it's whether macs and iDevices can play content from different iTunes accounts.
I've tried to sort through the forums to find this, but can't find if this was addressed before.  Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Multiple Apple IDs on One Mac

We set up macs for our faculty and staff. We, as computer support, have our own Apple ID and install some basic software that was, i.e. Microsoft Remote Desktop. Our users have their own login and can associate that with their Apple ID. But then they are prompted to update the Microsoft Remote Desktop software that we have installed, but can't because it is associated with our Apple ID.
How should this be done in a business environment where you have a helpdesk and different users who use the same machine?

  • Sharing Itunes Music Library among Multiple User Accounts on One Mac

I have 3 user accounts set up on the computer and one itunes account authorized on all 3 user accounts. I have the music library files placed in the shared folders and permissions set up to allow all users to read & write the music. However, only my user account (the main account with admin privileges) is able to access the music unless I log into my user account, run iTunes with sharing enabled, then exit to the login window. Then the other users can access the shared iTunes library. I have preferences setup to use the same library folders.
An earlier version of iTunes used to allow me to do this, and iPhoto still does allow a similar setup with my photo library.
Is there a way to fix this?
    Thanks!

I have an iMac at home with 4 users. I've recently struggled with this and thought I had a working solution ...
I created a new iTunes folder off of root. I then logged in as each user and set the path on their Advanced Tab to /iTunes/iTunes Music/ and dragged and dropped their local iTunes Music folders (~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/) into iTunes. This copies files that aren't there but skips anything that might be in two peoples library.
Then iTunes 8.1 came out and now things are broken. I've rebuilt the index by doing an Add to Library but my Podcasts don't download any more. 8-(

  • Multiple ip addresses on one Mac Server

we have 2 ethrnet, 1GB network, on 2 separate switchers, diffierent IP range, what iam looking for is to set the primery eathrnet port on the server and client MAC PRO, only for internet traficing usage, the secondery port use for open directory traffic and file share traffice.
To let you know i had these problems during installing the previous idea, first the open directory cant locate a clear path on the secondery eathernet port, since the open directory takes 2 IP (public IP and Private IP) in same time, second the client cant access the net work account, also the client cant see the server DNS.
I will attache an discreption drew concerning my OPEN DIRECTORY on MY SERVER.

By default, every service will listen on every interface, so you're going to need to jump through several hoops to secure your system.
For the most part your answer lies in ordering the interfaces and in routing.
Given a system with two ethernet ports, en0 = 10.1.1.1/255.255.255.0 and en1 = 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0 with a public router at 192.168.1.254 you should set it up as:
    en0:
    IP Address 10.1.1.1
    Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
    Router: -NONE-
    DNS: Your INTERNAL DNS Server
    en1:
    IP Address: 192.168.1.1
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Router: 192.168.1.254
    DNS: Your INTERNAL DNS servers
Additionally, en1 should be dragged to the top of the list of interfaces.
Now the OS will use en0 for all 10.1.1.x traffic and en1 for all 192.168.1.x traffic as well as external/internet traffic (since it's the only interface with a router address).
As mentioned above, this won't stop the service listening on both 'public' and 'private' interfaces, so you'll still need to take steps to stop advertising your Open Directory data to the 'public' port, but the basic network setup should work.

  • Multiple PPPoE connections on one Mac

    Hi,
I have two PPPoE type connections on my MBP; one is meant only for downloading whilst the other is my main browsing, mail, etc account.
The problem I have is this, before getting the second ISP account that I use for major downloading, I had just one PPPoE connection that I used for everything. Now that they are separate, I have the main one (the one I use for my mail and browsing, etc) set to connect when needed, hence it connects automatically when my MBP starts up due to the fact that my mail starts up on login.
I can manually disconnect it and connect the other account (downloading account) then use that connection for whatever it is that I download or stream, but the problem comes in when the other PPPoE account connects (because I never close my mail, only hide it).
So I am a little concerned that the wrong PPPoE connection might be used to download/stream my media. And, yes it is important that the accounts are used for different processes. With two PPPoE connections active (never knew that was even possible), I have been left with the option of removing the "connect when needed" option from my default connections meaning I now (It sounds lazy, I know...) I must click connect for each account when they are needed and that being as soon as I switch my MBP on.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, thank you much!
    Kal

Never mind, I figured it out. Set the service order appropriately.

  • Multiple iCloud accounts on one Mac

I would like to set up an ical calendar to sync all the schedules of my family members. We all have iCloud accounts. This worked before in mobileme, but since the iCloud upgrade it no longer works. Any suggestions to get this working again?

The simplest way to do this would probably to set up Private Sharing: one of you would publish a calendar and the others would subscribe to it with write privileges. Please see
    http://help.apple.com/icloud/#mm6b1a9479
and expand 'Share a private calendar or reminder list with specific people'.

  • Multiple Time Machines on One Mac

I have an iMac with two volumes.
I would like to use two "Time Machines" consiting of the two external FW 800 drives (one is 1TB; the other is a 2TB).
Can I the 1TB external drive for one (1TB) volume on my iMac, and the 2TB external drive for my other (2TB) volume on my iMac?
    I f so, how?
    Thank you.

Time Machine backups up everything on the MacPro, so both user accounts are being backed up.
Each user can only access their own respective backups....unless they have the log on password for the other user and log on as the other user.
When the MBP comes back from repair, then it will resume backing up to the "other" backup drive that is normally used with the MBP.
