Multiple power adaptor failures

I'm posting on here partly out of frustration, and partly in the hope that someone may be able to help.
I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro 13 inch, that up until July of this year (2013), I was very happy with.
However, in July my power adaptor failed. I had a dimly lit LED and when clicking the battery icon, I was told "Battery is not charging", "Power source: Power Adaptor".
I took my MacBook to the local Premium Reseller (on apples advice) and they replaced the adaptor.
The problem re-occured only a month later. Same problem, same advice, same replacement. This happened THREE times, each time about a month since the previous occasion.
These adaptors were treated well. Rarely used in a different location, and kept free of kinks or stresses.
This month, the problem repeated, AGAIN. I took it to my local service centre and this time they diagnosed a logic board failure, and replaced the part under applecare. They also provided ANOTHER new adaptor.
I picked up my MacBook yesterday. The problem repeated itself today.
I am starting to go slightly mad at this point. The most apple will help over the phone is to tell me to visit the repair centre again and hope for the best, but I'm at my wits end now.
If anyone has any idea what the problem could be, please let me know, because I'm really getting nowhere at the moment with applecare.

That a UPS unit would have prevented your logic board failures. Properly designed power supplies do not need a UPS unit in this country. In some third world countries where the power is unreliable on a daily basis with large power swings, they are a must have.
In my opinion, the G5 iMac's were a poor design with inadequate heat dissipation, weak power supplies and logic boards. Most of them ran for years, but an inordinate number of them had multiple failures. The new aluminum models are a much better design with most of the high heat components located at the top of the machine.
I had no hardware problems with my eight year old Dell...but I'm still sticking with Apple because of their superior software performance.
Good luck with what ever you decide...virg

  • 2011 Macbook Air - Multiple logic board failures - possible causes?

I have a 2011 i7 macbook air - 7 months old.  About a month ago I went to use the computer after allowing it to sleep and it was totally dead.  Apple authorized repair center said the logic board failed and needed to be replaced.  Fast forward a month and I finally get the machine back.  It works fine for 6 hours, I put it to sleep, and soon as the screen went out, I hear a pop, fizzle, then the machine is dead again.  The authorized repair center wants to replace the logic board again, which should get me up and running, but its not likley that that is the root CAUSE of the problem here, since it happened twice now.  I suggested to them that perhaps the power adaptor, battery, or some other component is the issue and they don't think so.  I'm located overseas, and every repair attempt takes 1 month b/c of parts (total joke if you're listening apple!!).  My biggest concern is that they replace the logic board again, I'm out of commission for 2 months now, and it just fails again.  Does anyone have any suggestions on the possible causes of this problem?
As FYI - I'm using the same power outlet and power strip with another laptop and haven't had any similar issues.  Thanks for the help!

I have logic board problems too. I have had a late 2010 mac book air for 2 and half years. Its been a great machine in general - although it did go back within the warranty period for the track pad
Now it has logic board failure - symptons are the sound going and  the battery is dead and it is unable to charge which means every time you put the power lead on the computer thinks it is starting from scratche.
I have been quoted over £400 for the repair!  Like the above post I do not believe that this part should fail - and if it does then it is a major design problem and Apple should be doing something for us. I just dont know where to start.
I have used macs for 14 years and owned eight along the way. Most have them have lasted many years with full functionality  the record was my G3 imac which was still working after 13 years.
I really cant believe the situation I am in and rather think I have bought my last mac!

  • Anyone having Power Supply Failures with 4305's

For some reason over the last 6-8 weeks I am getting multiple power failures on my 4305DMPs, replacing the power supply/wall plug brings everything right back but I'm wondering if there is a bigger problem.
All DMP's are connected to APC power bars with Surge Protection, and the LCD Screen continues to work fine. The DMP will just quickly flicker both Red and Green Lights, and remain unresponsive. We have tried cleaning teh contacts on the power supply but have had no luck.
I have had to swap 10-12 of them now, these have been working with no issues in the field for over 3 years.
I guess I am just wondering if anyone else has had this problem, a search on here didn't reveal anything.
    Thanks,
    Jh

I haven't heard anything about this on the 4305, but just pointing out that this is a 2-year old post.
We're using some Linksys POE -> 5V splitters and they've been humming away for years. I listen to feedback about reliability, but it would be helpful if a specific part # / manufacturer on the brick were identified along with any complaints about it.
As far as replacements, be sure to use the right specifications, other DMPs operate off of 12VDC but the 4305 uses a 5-volt adapter.
    Input voltage: 5V
    Input current: 3 ADC
Power consumption: Peak: 12W; average: 5W

  • Using power adaptor plugs with iBook charger

I bought the iPod USB Power adaptor from Singapore and it came with a power adaptor plug that is used in the States. Can I use that plug and slot it into my iBook charger? Will it work? I've tried putting it in and the connection's fine but it doesn't look like a perfect fit externally.

    Hi Ernest,
    Three criteria must be respected:
    1) Voltage and Power compatibility:
The electrical specs on the iPod USB Power adaptor must match the ones that come out of the iBook charger. (you may need a magnifying glass, but they read somewhere, it's the law) Most probably all this stuff is International 100-240V/50-60Hz, but you must make sure.
However the Amperes (or the Watts) values often differ, so watch this carefully.
    2) No loose contact:
Although shapes can look weird, if at least contacts are always touching tightly, that's fine.
    3) Security:
If you can see enough metal for the cat to put her nose on it... ... ...
Another solution is to warn the cat
--> Find a shape adapter if electrical specs match:
Adapters are not all multiple, expensive devices. Find a cheap one that fits only between Singapore and the US.
    Hope this helps.

  • DOA power adaptor - service followup failre

I bought my first Apple yesterday at the Apple Fifth Avenue (NYC) store. I battled 95 minutes of New York City Christmas traffic and parking-hunting to try a Mac Book Pro. When I got home, I unpacked it, and discovered the power adaptor was DOA.
I was surprised because I had heard so much about Apple quality. I was more surprised at the phone service. After waiting about 25 minutes, my call was handled by someone who had trouble understanding my address. He then said he needed my credit card because they would charge me if I didn't sent the dead adaptor back in time.
I don't need the dead adaptor, and I also don't need the hassle of taking it to the post office heaped on top of the hassle of having to invest my time and effort to remedy Apple's quality control failure.
I'm braving the Christmas traffic and parking one more time. To take the machine back to the store and return it for a refund. It's back to HP for me. One failure is 8 machines, and they were easier to deal with.
What a disappointment. The Mac Book Pro is beautiful looking and probably would have been fun to learn about. Those of us who have not been Apple people sometimes wonder how much of the Apple myth is true and how much is myth. I am sorry to be disappointed, in part because I despise Microsoft.

Sorry for your bad experience. I had many bad experiences with the one Dell computer I owned, so I feel your pain. Apple's policy on returning defective parts is the same all over. In my experience they have sent me the replacement part with a FEDEX return package that was picked up at my house. They took my credit card, but did not charge it as the part was returned.
Perhaps you should clarify their return policy on your power brick. I suspect that once you give them your card, they will send you a new one.

  • Different notebook power adaptors

    HP Pavilion DV6-6138TX, Windows 7 64-bit
I use the included 120W/18.5V/6.5A power adaptor included with my laptop, however, it is quite bulky and often not the best to travel with.
I also have access to the smaller 65W Smart AC Adaptor (spare part # 463958-001), which my laptop recognises and accepts. It does notice that it is a weaker adaptor, and suggests I change back to my bigger one.
However, if I am traveling around (university, for example) using basic word processing functions (i.e no heavy games), is it safe and okay to use the smaller 65W adaptor with me, since it is much easier to travel with?
    Thanks, Brandon

    BL5965 wrote:
Is there any reason why it wouldn't be compatible with the 90W Slim adaptor, or standard 90W Smart adaptor?
Power is calculated as a straight multiplication of (Power) = (Amps) x (Voltage). My guess is that either the voltage or amp setting for those other two 90W adaptors is not recommended for the DV6000 series laptops.
Both the 90W Standard and Slim have an output voltage of 19.5V (4.6A), so is incompatible with your laptop.

By the way, I am aware of possible performance issues/charging time issues with using a lower wattage adaptor, but I am more concerned about problems such as fire caused by the adaptor drawing more current than it can handle, to try keep up with the laptop.
Again, it is not recommended to use the 65W charger. The draw your laptop will place on the 65W charger could cause damage to itself or your laptop from heat as the adapter tries to give your laptop the power it wants.

  • Power adaptors on new MacBooks - very annoyed

Over the weekend the adaptor for my MacBook stopped working. Ok, I had today booked as holiday so no problem, I’ll just go to the applestore on Regent’s Street [London} and get them to give me a new one. Sur, that’ll be easy.
First, book an appointment. Then sit on a bench for 45 mins waiting for my name to be called. New power adaptor needed. None in stock, but they manage to find one from somewhere. Great. Job done.
Five mins ago this one stopped working.
    WORDS FAIL ME!
Is there a way of getting one without waiting for so long in the store?

    First Magus wrote:
If the one you just tried quit you need to have your MacBook checked. There may be something wrong with it to cause this failure to occur again. Take it in with the adapter and have them check both out.
I agree. Two adapters failing with the same MacBook suggests that there is an issue with the MacBook rather than with the adapter(s)…

  • Power Adaptor. HELP!!!!

I tried to reset my iPod and now it says connect to external power source. Is there any way i can get back to the menu. I've tried multiple times to reset and it keeps coming back onto the "connect to power source" icon. Help please
      Windows XP Pro

You may be able to complete the process via a car charger, or via a powered firewire port on the computer (with the required 6 pin cable of course) if you have access to either of those. Or maybe visit an Apple store if one is nearby.
Other than that, your iPod cannot be used until you complete this process.
Older iPods that required this step were supplied with a power adaptor as standard.

  • Battery charging and power adaptor issues

I'm having slight issues with both my power adaptor and the battery itself.
First I think I have cord issues as the light status can change from dim green to red or bright green if I move the cord around.
Second, my MBP is having trouble recognising if power is going to the battery or if it's charging etc. It can recognise if there's no adaptor connected at all, but if there's an adaptor connected, it has trouble seeing if there's power coming from the adaptor even if the light is on. I.e. it can stay at 100% and supply comes from the power adaptor and then suddenly drop to 80% power and start charging agan. One issue that happened earlier today was the adaptor was connected, and the battery indicator was at 100% with supply from the adaptor. Suddenly the MBP shutdown, and when I rebooted it was at 17% (I've tried repeating that in case of a dodgy battery but I couldn't)

If that doesn't help, the problem could be the adapter, the battery, or the I/O board (or a couple of less likely things). If you can borrow another adapter and/or battery, try them to see where the problem is. Or, if you're near an Apple Store, take it in and they'll diagnose it for you (for free, but they will charge for repairs if you need them and don't have AppleCare).

  • Problems with new Mac Book Pro 13'' +power adaptor

    Hi there,
I'm new here and first of all I'd like to appologize from my lack of technical language, since my only interesst in computers is that they don't give me problems so I can keep not knowing too much about them.
Ok, so I bought the new Mac Book Pro 13'' exactly 2 months ago cause my old and long travelled Power Book G4 died. I didn't hesitate to spend the money to buy the new one, cause I was so happy with my experience with the old one and in my mind returning to PCs was not even considered.
BUT...I'm not totally happy about my new laptop...from day 1 Safari would just close itself but I didn't give too much thought about it. After this, not only Safari can close up to several times a day, but also iphoto or any other program that I use for work. But that's not all..One day it would take minutes to start running and it would go extremely slow...another day it would start also very slow but also it wouldn't show the tools bar on top or my folders. Another time it would show me, instead of the normal starting page, a page where it would ask me to accept or not a kind of revision for hardware. After so many problems of course I pressed yes...everything seemed normal, then computer started and seemed to be running normal again (aside from this safari and other programs that shut down). Today my computer, when moved, just went totally blank but fortunately I could start it with nor problems after it.
So...anyone knows what the problem must be?? Should I take it to a Technical service ??? and there's another issue...i'm handing in m phD in a week so I can't just be without computer now, and in a week I'm flying to Canada where I also will need my computer for work...what can I do???
And the second problem...the power adaptor from the beginning seemed to act funny sometimes...sometimes charching, sometimes not, I would follow the instructions in the support part and after being several minutes changing one cord for the other, to keep it 1 minute disconnected and so at some point it would start functioning again. But this happened seldom so also I would think it was a protectiion mechanism of the adapter. But, when this is happening more often than not, then it gets annoying. Also I've been transporting it in a careful way since I bought it to find that after only 2 months in the cord (from the computer to adaptor) you can see the internal cable as if there was some cut...a third one seems to be appearing too. I've taken it to the technical support and the guy who was helfpul but also honest said he couldn't do anything for me cause since there were those cuts, he could always be said that it was a misuse of it-an accident and then he would have to pay the replace himself. Well, it's not!!! My old adaptor has been transported in a way less careful way and it's survived with NO problems for 5 years. The material is clearly different from the old cord. This one because it's new, I only need to put it in a special bag air protected. Honestly I don't feel happy to pay 80 € for an adaptor that I don't know if it's gonna last me only 2 months or that I know I can't transport normally. The guy suggested me to ask in forums and to call directly to the apple technical service.
Again, has anyone had any similar problems with the adaptor???
    Rosanna

Take it to an Apple retailer and have the computer repaired.  It is still in warranty.

  • I have a 1st Gen, MacBook Pro from 2006. For the last few years I've had to us my power adaptor as my battery no longer works. Now my power adaptor looks like it's coming to an end. Even though it's securely fitted, it often switches off.

I have a 1st Gen, MacBook Pro from 2006. For the last few years I've had to us my power adaptor as my battery no longer works, and shuts down after 30 seconds it. Now my power adaptor looks like it's coming to an end. Even though it's securely fitted, it often switches off.
I am planning on buying a new MacBook Pro later this year, but for the meantime I'm not sure if I should buy a new power adaptor, or if this is a problem with my MacBook Pro. Also does anyone know where I can buy a battery in the UK for 1st Gen MacBook Pro.

OWC has batteries for 1,1 generation MacBook Pros and they ship internationally - http://eshop.macsales.com/.
Your best bet for a power adapter is to get one from Apple. Third-party adapters just don't seem to be reliable (or safe). You can also buy a replacement battery directly from Apple, of course, but they're a bit more expensive.

  • Charging in Europe w/ Belkin power adaptor.  Do I need a voltage converter

Hi. I am taking my nano 3 to Italy and England and hope to charge it with the Belkin rotating power adaptor that allows me to charge by plugging into the house power here in the States. I know that I need to get adaptors for the outlets, but do I also need to get a converter? The Belkin Power Adapter does have 100-240V Input and 50-60HZ AC. I'm getting conflicting info.
    Thanks,
    Tim

but do I also need to get a converter?
    No.

  • Power adaptor and battery HOT!

This is the message I sent to Apple a few minutes ago. Maybe some of you can have some answers as well. Thanks!
    "Dear Apple,
First of all, I would like to kindly express my apologies for using the feedback form to send you some thoughts about my MAC. I did not know who else to address to.
I have bought my MAC in September 2009, through the Apple Store online. It has been delivered in Norway, where I am living in the present.
Unfortunately, I have never been very satisfied with it, due to two main issues.
First, I have noticed a problem with the battery and power adaptor since the very first day. They are both heating up very fast, after just some minutes, and then the mac is really, really slow (even if I have just one open application). I have tried a few times to go to a service provider in Oslo, but they said it's working fine. The first time I had a visit with a service was in the first week after I bought it. Then, when I had this screen problem, so I took advantage and I asked them to check again the battery (they had it for a week or two). They said it was fine. A few weeks ago I visited 3 different services with the same issue - no problems found.
Of course one could say that this is the proper way of working of a mac, but how can a mac work so slow when they all say it is so fast? I have asked around and none of my friends had a similar problem, since they've purchased it.
I decided to write you now due to the fact that a few days ago I had to use a friend's mac for some hours (which is older than mine, a simple MacBook; plus, he uses it much often than me). It was working perfectly! Not at all slow, no heating.
Then yesterday I had my power adaptor plugged in for half an hour - then I saw that the mac was not charging (how come?). When I touched the power adaptor, I literally burned my finger. Of course I got scared as well. I tried to change the power adaptor with another one - it did not get so heat up, but the battery of the mac was still burning, as usual. I used to keep my old PC in my lap, with the mac it was always impossible, unfortunately.
With lots of regrets I am writing this message. I have never felt that I had a 'real mac', like the other friends of mine, although I was so excited in the beginning. I sincerely hope that I am a unique user.
Now I am planning to sell it to someone (I don't think I can get even half of the price now, since it is pretty old) and get back to some usual PC. With all the regrets in the world, again, because some of the features were indeed really cool (like the trackpad, for eg).
Thank you for reading this! Good luck with your future products! And may God rest in peace Steve Jobs, I hope the business will not be affected.
    Best regards,
    Cristina Moldovan"

45W is definitely not correct for any 15" model. Here are the correct model power adapters:

Yes it can hurt and potentially create a fire hazard if you use the wrong adapter. Get the correct one.
As for the display resolution the 867 Mhz TiBook was released on this release as a:
