Multiple Qs- Boot camp, Force running a CD, VM Fusion

I will first apologize for what is going to be a fairly long post but would be grateful if you experts out there could help me out.
1. I just got a MAC after just getting using a PC after I was persuaded it would be an easier system to grapple with. I am trying to run a CD textbook that would usually autorun from my PC but is not running on my MAC. On a PC I would go to the Run function to make it run but I am not sure what to do in MAC. When I checked it out on "About this MAC" it said OS9 Drivers NO and S.M.A.R.T. status unsupported. What can I do as it is a major textbook of mine and I can't afford to buy another copy.
2.I got my machine 2 months before the Leopard was launched and have the Tiger OS. When I tried to install Office CD I had it would not install. I did a search and decided maybe I needed Bootcamp but all the links are taking me to the Leopard software. Will I still be able to get Bootcamp without buying Leopard, or can I install Office without it.
3. My friend persuaded to buy VWFusion but it turns out it is a partition software and I don't think I'll be savvy enough to go back and forth without harming my computer. Is it neccesary to install it if I can't get Boot Camp
As I said, very long post but I'll be grateful for answers to my Qs.

You want to run a PC application, you need to use a VM like Fusion or Parallels and a copy of XP or Vista, which should be able to handle most office apps.
If you want to run Windows natively, you have to partition one of your drives and install Windows. That can be done without BootCamp in order to install Vista. No idea if XP will work.
I'd try the VM approach first, don't activate until you've had a chance to get it working, whichever route you go, skip that for 30 days.

  • Critical Boot Camp info - run as admin user

FYI, the Boot Camp installer runs mostly fine as a "normal" user (ie, a user with no administrative powers). This is how I normally run OS X, because I'm a bit paranoid Entering an admin username/password when needed works fine for me most of the time.
Anyway, the Boot Camp setup program will prompt for an admin username, and happily burn the drivers disk and partition the hard drive. However, when it comes to start the installation, it will say that "No installer CD was found." I beat my head against the wall for 2 hours trying to make it work. I burned different copies of the disc, with different volume labels, deleting the $OEM$ directory, etc. Finally it occurred to me to try logging in as my admin user, and running the Boot Camp setup program from there. BOOM, it rebooted into Windows Setup using my original Windows disc. I almost fell out of my chair
So, basically, you need to actually be logged in as an admin user for the installer to work.
Aparently I'm the only one who doesn't normally run as an administrative user (I can't find any other posts about this problem)... I realize that doing so is fine, but to me it feels a little bit like running as root
    Hope this helps someone.

    THANK YOU!!!
I was having the same problem, and thought it was because I was using an MSDN disc. It's bootable, but includes Home Professional and Tablet versions all on one disc, so I figured it had to do with the alternate volume label and/or directory structure.
Your post saved me many wasted hours.

  • Windows Vista Boot Camp always running

I just recently purchased a macbook air ( 1.86, 128gb ssd) and I've been extremely happy with it. I was wondering if people have noticed that the fan is always running when using Vista but not in OS X?
    Is there a solution?

I have the same machine with Vista running via Boot Camp and Fusion. Although the fan does run more frequently than when running Mac o/s, it certainly doesn't run "all the time" as you report.
Note, however, that I only use Vista for occasional browsing with Explorer and to run one app for which there is no Mac alternative; could be that it's the app you're running that makes the fan more active?

  • I want to use Boot Camp to run a tax program that will only use explorer. Whick windows program do I need to install in Boot Camp

I want to use Boot Camp and windows 7 or 8, preferrably 7 to run a tax program that will only let me use explorer.  I am using a Mac Book Pro with OSX Maverick 10.9.  There are so many windows programs out there it is confusing which one I need.  I don't think that I will need Office.

I would use Windows 7 any full version except the trial, or a branded Dell, HP, etc. versions

  • Installing Parallels when Boot Camp already running Windows

I'm considering installing Parallels on my MacBook Pro, which I already have partitioned with a drive running Windows using Boot Camp. What I need to know is, do I need to eliminate the partition with Boot Camp and if so, will I have to completely reinstall Windows and all my Windows software? I don't want to waste the partition that's dedicated to the virtual drive, rather I'd prefer to have the entire hard drive available to MAC. I really want to have parallels, as it's easier for me to be able to work on Windows and MAC applications at the same time, without having to stop-shut down-restart each time.

Parallels can use your existing Boot Camp partition for the VM, if that's what you're asking. However, if you want to have all one partition (without the Boot Camp one), then yes, you'll have to reinstall Windows when you install Parallels, unless there's some way to "import" your Boot Camp" setup that I don't know about.

  • Can I run Excel 2007 in Boot Camp and run XLSM files?

Since I have found no way to run Excel 2007 files with macros (xlsm format) on a Mac using Excel 2004, 2008 or NeoOffice, does Boot Camp offer support for running Excel 2007 with V.B. Macros? How about in Fusion or Parallels? Anyone know? Any PC switchers out there who have done this?

I read somewhere that there was a problem with certain incompatibilities in the hardware. I guess the only thing to do is just install everything and test the macros. It'll work or it won't. I'll post the results when I have them. Thanks.

  • Boot camp error running!

    Hello
i'm trying to run bootcamp but didn't work showing an error
You must update your computer's boot rom firmware before using this setup assistant!
    SMC Version (system):     1.30f3
    Model Identifier:     MacPro3,1
I tried to download the update from here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237 but it says this computer doesn't need this update !
    how to update it ?
Thanks.* i purchased this copy of mac!

obviously the error is in error!
    zap the pram
as long as you install Windows 7 on its own hard drive you don't even need Boot Camp Assistant except to download Apple drivers. Just boot Windows DVD and format and install. voila.

  • HT1846 can i install boot camp and run explorer 9 on my mack

I need to be able to use Internet explorer (7 or higher) on my Mac.  If I install boot camp and windows will I be able to?

    Yes.
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows.  The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.  It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • Can't get Boot Camp to run since updates

I did all the updates as a good Apple user now I find I cannot boot up my Windows disc. When I restart computer holding option key the screen goes white and nothing happens. What should I do?

Something appears to have not installed correctly when the "updates" were installed. Can you tell me which updates did you installed before the issues began? Was Windows already working normally prior to the updates? By the way, which version of windows did you install?
Meanwhile see if you can do the following:
right after you hear the startup sound press and hold the ALT (Option) key until a menu appears on the screen.
It should let you choose between Mac OS and Windows.
Choose Mac OS and press Enter or click the little arrow below it to start into Mac OS.
Once you are in Mac OS choose System Preferences from the Apple Menu and go to Startup Disk. Choose your Mac OS volume there to make your computer auto start from that volume next time.
Close the menu again and you are done.
You can use the Boot Camp assistant to delete your Windows partition, recreate it and reinstall Windows afterwards if the windows installation never worked right in the first place.

  • Boot camp Yosemite Win 8.1 3tb Fusion Drive problems

    Hi,
As many other have reported on the internet I am having problems installing windows on my iMac 27' late 2014 3tb fusion drive, where the partition I create falls outside the 2.2tb limit that prevents windows to be installed when selecting disk under the windows installation (i.e, same problem as Win 8.1, iMac Retina 3TB Fusion, Yosemite, Boot Camp fail!).
Is my understanding correct that this issue was solved in the OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.3 or was all they did to make sure boot camp could create a partition, but windows still couldn't find it?
I am using Yosemite 10.10.2 and I am wondering if for some reason they didn't include this update?
Has anyone successfully installed windows through boot camp on a 3tb fusion drive on yosemite, without 'manually' dividing the 3tb fusion into two partitions, and then creating the windows partition within the first partition?
    Many thanks
    iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10.2), 3tb fusion drive

You are correct. Please see - iMac (27-inch, Late 2012): Boot Camp alert with 3TB hard drive - Apple Support.
BCA should work. If you are running into any issues, can you post the output of the following Terminal commands?
    diskutil list
    diskutil cs list
sudo gpt -vv r show /dev/disk0
sudo gpt -vv r show /dev/disk1
    sudo fdisk /dev/disk0
    sudo fdisk /dev/disk1

  • Boot Camp 2.1 ruined my fonts - Fusion or Parallels for CS3 - need help?

As Boot Camp 2.1 has been known to cause problems with Adobe Open Type fonts, I need to run Windows XP and Adobe Photoshop CS3 on a virtual machine.
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8414651#8414651
Which one would better suit my needs, Fusion or Parallels?
    Thanks!

    Trisha K:
Parallels and Fusion pretty much use the same principle to use Windows as a virtual machine. I use VMWare Fusion and it pretty much serves my needs as I only use it when I am logged into OSx and need to boot into Windows to run MS Office applications. I personally prefer running Windows natively with boot camp.
Please note that both Parallels and Fusion will share/split RAM with OSx. I am not sure how this will affect the overall performance of Adobe Photoshop. You may sacrifice some speed and performance while using Windows in a virtual machine environment.

  • Updated drivers in Fusion/XP - now Boot Camp hangs

Background: I have Fusion 2.0.6 on my MacBook, with a Win XP SP3 VM on a Boot Camp partition. So I can either boot directly into XP and run it native via Boot Camp, or run it as a Fusion VM with Mac OS. Works like a champ. Until now, that is.
I'm still running Leopard, but I used the Snow Leopard DVD to install new Boot Camp drivers on my XP VM. That is, I mounted the DVD in XP and ran Boot Camp's setup.exe. I did this with the Fusion VM, not Boot Camp, which was probably a really bad idea. The good news is XP still runs fine under Fusion. But now if I boot straight to Windows, it hangs. No blue screen or error message, it just hangs. It doesn't respond to the mouse or keyboard at any point during boot-up, so I can't even coax it into safe mode. Any advice? Other than I'm hosed?

I have been repeatedly advised by Apple that future Boot Camp upgrades may not install properly if users have installed different drivers manually.
I had experienced this myself on my late 2007 MacBook Pro, and I had to roll back the drivers in order to upgrade Boot Camp.
Many issues have been reported about driver conflicts in Boot Camp on the unibody MacBook Pros, and Boot Camp is definitely due for an update. For these reasons, I have chosen not to manually update drivers on my unibody MacBook Pro.
    I hope that this helps!
    Good luck!

  • Javascript fails exclusivily in browsers running on boot camp

    Hello guys
I'm a Flash and mobile apps developer, and I recently came across very disturbing behavior, while running some of my work on MacBooks which are using boot camp.
For many of our projects, we utlize SWFAddress open source JavaScript library. Let me just paste WIKI description, because they phraze far better than I possibly could:
SWFAddress is an open-source JavaScript library that enables Adobe Flash/Flex and JavaScript/AJAX websites and web applications to support deep linking, a practice that enables users to link to a specific section or page of the content. Its importance is because such Rich Internet Application platforms provide only a single URL to access the specific content, and any user navigation within the content cannot be uniquely identified, or shared by means of the URL. When the developer of the content integrates with SWFAddress, users are able to use standard browser navigation functionality, share and bookmark unique URLs that represent the currently displayed section or state of the content. The library is commonly used on Flash websites and web applications being the only available deep linking JavaScript library for Flash on the web. SWFAddress has been found to be used by over 10,000 websites as of 2010.
I notice that the above script won't work at all in any browser as long as boot camp is running on the user's machine, while it performs without problem on any Os and browser , whether it's a iMac, Macbook, PC desktop or PC laptop. I tested it in old and latest browser, with same results. Please do know, that I have checked the issue across multiple machines and it is 100% consistant on each. I can't possibly see the reason behind it, but there is something about Boot Camp that causes the browser to fail to perform properly, and I wonder if any of you have any idea, why would it happen?
These libraries has been writter and rewrittern to be bullet proof and cross os compatible, and they do work like charm. Except for mac and boot camp combos.
    Take for example: http://www.drawingart.org/
Select any link you like and press the back button. It will take you nicely to the previous Flash section you just came from. But if you test it on any macbook running boot camp, it will fail regardless what browser you use. I also though it was related to single machine and I blamed the installation, but a week ago, two totally unrelated projects and 4 unrelated clients reported the very same problem. So I'm more than certain it's not an isolated case, it's exclusive to brwosers running on OS with boot camp.
Please share whatever clues, hints you might have. I will sincerely appreciate your expertise.
    Best regards
    Seba

Alright, so here's the deal. I used bootcamp to download XP a few days ago, and noticed that since we (a family member and myself) couldn't get any of the drivers for ethernet, etc, to work because we couldn't use internet, we decided to download Windows 7 on the partition that Boot Camp created for XP. Well, everything works fine and dandy, but I have no iSight usage, nor do my speakers, or headphone port work. (There's a little red LED shining in the port) I can live without the iSight, but I do need sound for some applications. Is there a fix for this?
(This is on my Macbook, 13.3 inch, Core2 duo, late 2007.)
Edit: forgot to add that this is the 36 bit version of Win7 I'm using. Or 34. I can't remember. It was less than 64. And I'm very sure that I had Boot Camp 3.0 and updated to 3.1

I understand your post to mean that you used bootcamp to install XP and to install Windows 7. If my interpretation is correct, I may have found the reason for your difficulty.
I do not use Boot Camp or Windows®.However, if your system info correctly shows that you are using Mac OS X (10.5.8) on a Intel 20" iMac (late 2008), this article from Apple's Boot Camp Support Page seems to say that you would need to upgrade your Mac OS to 10.6 in order to use Windows 7:

  • Can you run Boot Camp and Fusion at the same time?

    Hi,
I had boot camp installed on my mac pro and loved it. I decided to get greedy and install Fusion using the boot camp partition. The Fusion install went ok but then Microsoft started to get fussy. Every time I would do something on Fusion it would ask me to "Re-activate Windows" when I logged into boot camp. Maybe if I saw Fusion fully working I wouldn't want to run boot camp any more but I think I want to have the option to run either. Right now I only have 1 gig real memory on my mac pro and Fusion seems a little slow compared to native boot camp. Can I run both boot camp and fusion without having to buy two native copies of Windows XP pro? I don't want a "sensible" answer, I want an answer that takes into account how Microsoft treats this re-activation situation.
I guess Leopard might make this all obsolete, but until then .....
    ... Flash Gordon

You need to make sure to install VMware Tools into your virtual machine (while booted into Windows via Fusion). Once you do this you shouldn't have to continually activate Windows when going back and forth from Boot Camp to Fusion. I've seen this discussed over on the VMware Fusion discussion boards, so you may want to look there for more details.
Also, if Windows starts telling you it's been activated too many times, you can call Microsoft and they'll give you an alternate activation key. The phone number is listed on the Windows error screen. I had to do it and they were very accommodating. I just told them I was running Windows in a virtual machine, and there were almost no questions asked.
You don't need to buy 2 copies of Windows to run both Boot Camp and VMFusion.

  • 5 year old Imac running Snow Leopard with Boot camp.

My IMac will not boot up when I turn on?
The grey apple logo screen and Apple Jingle occurs but I get no desktop or Finder Window and the computer turns off after about 5 minutes of trying to start up.
I inserted Snow Leopard Start Up Disk and tried running Disk Utility - however the Internal Hard Drive is not accesible and shows as being unmounted.
Furthermore - there is NO Start up Internal Hard Drive to reinstall the Snow Leopard OS to.I see my External Drive and Boot Camp partition ONLY.
Could this be a  Hard Drive Failure?
However, when I turn the Computer on and Hold the Option key I have no issue booting Windows via Boot Camp and running Windows XP?
What can I do to resolve this?
I would be so greatful for any help to solve this issue.

It looks like your OS X partition is damaged, but not the hard disk. Although your OS X partition is unmounted, you can select it and repair the disk from the Mac OS X DVD. If it doesn't work, you will have to erase the OS X partition and reinstall OS X
