Multiple shared music folders...need organization...help?

In a recent effort to organize my itunes library, I discovered that we have not one, but four shared music folders between our imac and macbook pro. I discovered that each folder contains different parts of our music library, with some artists or songs overlapping in each. Further digging showed that not all music owned exists in a folder...I actually had to search for some songs in finder. I'm worried about losing music and having duplicates of songs. Any suggestions?

It's the same with me. Just discovered, I have 15 additional users created. I'm most eager to learn why this is happening because I have not been able to 'auto login' using my own account.

iTunes has not had a sidebar for over a year. You can see one (as iTunes 10 used to show) by doing View > Show Sidebar from iTunes' menu.
But I'm not sure if that is your issue. You do not need a sidebar to do home sharing. Are you running the current iTunes (11.1.3)? Have you turned on sharing in Preferences? Have you done File > Turn on Home Sharing?

OS creating multiple user/library folders - need help

My computer has decided on it's own to revert back to it's original default settings causing me to lose all the changes that I have made, as well as forcing me to redo the set-up procedures for Mail, Safari and other browsers and applications. This is happening every day after I log off. In looking around for answers I found that Home/User is creating multiple libraries as I keep resetting the computer. I now have 8 library folders all with different contents. I'm sure this is why the computer is reverting to default. Do I delete the extra folders? How do I know which is the one to keep? The one with the most items? I was poking around the apps and other sections, but I don't remember moving or changing anything. I will have to start over again tomorrow and I will then have 9 folders. I would really appreciate someone to help me out of this dilemma.

Can I create a folder on my desktop that containg the original files and a "new catalog" for each "shoot"
I'm hoping to create a workflow where the folder would contain everthing needed to access and edit/develop images at any time. After I finished a shoot the folder would contain a the original images, the catalog with previews and develop setting and any exports. I would then move that folder to an external hard drive and note on an Excel (Numbers) spread sheet where it is.
Now in the future I could find the drive, connect it any computer and begin working on an image since everything is there.
If the answer is yes is it as simple as "creating" a new catalog via file/new catalog in the folder I just created for the client?

Yes, even if you don't put the double-quotes on those words

Assuming that the computer has Lightroom installed, then this would work. You might need to reconnect the photos inside of Lightroom.

Need help merging & consolidating 2 iTunes Music Folders on the same drive

I have2 iTunes Music Folders on the hard drive of my iMac. Each folder is 80+ gigs and there are many duplicates in each folder. Currently iTunes is pulling songs from each folder. I would like to combine the contents of each folder in to one. What is the best way to do this, with out making a complete mess of my iTunes library.

Best way to organize/use multiple Music folders

I have a situation where I want to keep all of my classical music separate from the rest of my music. I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion as to the best way to go about doing this. The way I have done it is this: I created a new user account on my computer, and while logged into that account, I import all of my classical music into iTunes. This creates a separate music folder in the new separate account. Then, in order to access that music from my primary account, I enabled myself to access that folder by giving myself permissions. Is this the best way to go about this? Is there a way to create separate iTunes music folders from within the same user account? If not, is the way that I am sharing the best way to go about it? Would it be better to copy the music folder (or drag it) to the public folder, or shared folder?

I've used (and use) the smart playlist option for many things. I would use it in this case, but I have a ton of classical music and I don't want to fill my main music library list with so much classical music. I sometimes listen to music straight from the main music library, and then there is the problem of it playing a rock song and then a classical, etc. Also, it becomes much more difficult to navigate through my main library when there is so much more content in it. I know with the use of smart lists, you can really create well organized music sub libraries, and I do use this feature often. I use it in my non classical library, as well as my separate classical one. I create lists for the different composers, or the era, such as Baroque, Romantic, Classical, etc. Also, Sonatas, Concertos, etc, and even musical instrument. Anyway, I guess my point is that it is just easier to keep the classical music separate. I had all of my music integrated on my last computer, and was often frustrated by it.
Thanks for the suggestion though. Any other thoughts you might have on the topic would be welcome and appreciated.

Setting up a new Free Software Project, organizational help needed.

I need some help with a project I am working on.
I have been working on this project for some time now. I have written a program using JDK 6 and Eclipse.
The actual software is not the problem here. The actual problem, as I am starting to find out, is how to distribute this program.
I think I have organized the actual files incorrectly. Since I have been working on this program for some time now, its gotten a lot bigger then
I originally thought it would be. Also I have been using SVN and sourceforge, so I have been reluctent to make drastic changes to the layout of the
source code.
But I am starting to see that I need to adapt the source code to some standard if I am to either get other to help me or to release the program.
And here is where your help comes in.
I need to know how to organize my files.
I have organized the *.java files in a somewhat orderly fashion, but from what I understand most source code is organized into "src", "lib", ect folders.
This is what I need the help with.
My program uses some external jar files that contain some methods, functions and class I use.
I also have some images and icons used in the program.
There are also files that are created, written to and read from the program, which I need to keep.
What is the best way to organize these files and is there some sort of "standard of free software" out there?
I would appreciate any help on the matter.

Are you JARring your project when you make it into a binary? You can JAR it the same way with your source, as well. As for the folders that you are talking about, I'm not an Eclipse user, but doesn't the IDE organize your files into packages and such while you are working on a project?
My perspective comes from NetBeans. When I create a project, the IDE automatically creates an Ant file and also organizes the project into packages. For example, if I start a project called StripNewLines, my Main class will be located in a package called stripnewlines, which I can refactor later to something like net.mycompany.stripnewlines, for example. Then, when I need to include resources such as files or icons, I go into my file manager and simply create new folders under my project's source tree. For example, my project file tree may look something like:
+ StripNewLines/
+ dist/
+ lib/
+ StripNewLines.jar
+ README.TXT
+ src/
+net/
+ mycompany/
+ stripnewlines
+ Main.java
Once I get done adding my files and icons, it might look like this:
+ StripNewLines/
+ dist/
+ lib/
+ StripNewLines.jar
+ README.TXT
+ src/
+net/
+ mycompany/
+ stripnewlines/
+ Main.java
+ files/
+ LICENSE
+ README
+ art/
+ file-open.png
+ exit.png

Once I've added those files and icons to my file heirarchy in my file manager, NetBeans will automatically update the project and add the packages net.mycompany.files and net.mycompany.art. Then I just have to access them by their paths to use them in my application.
Once you've gotten your application completed and compile it to a jar file, you can drop to a shell and use the `jar` command to "pack up" your source tree. By doing it this way, you have a single file for download as a binary and another single file for download as a source archive. Obviously, if you are using libraries, you will need to zip up or tarchive your lib/ folder and JAR file for the distributions, so that your external libraries will also be available to your application on another machine.
Anyhow, just some thoughts. I do hope this helps you a little and doesn't confuse you more.

Shared libraries AND private music folders?

I have had my iTunes set up using a Shared folder for about three years now with great success being shared across 4 users on one Mac. Each user has their own iTunes folder and their own iTunes library. The iTunes Music folder is an alias (link) back to a folder by the same name in my Shared user account. As content gets added, I periodically run "Add to Library..." from the other accounts to pick up the new content.
Now enter a maturing high school freshman daughter who needs to add a whole bunch of stuff I don't want access to. Namely, she has Berlitz German and Spanish language CD's that provide THOUSANDS of words - each as a separate audio track and each with a photo of that word stored as Album Artwork. So now, not only do I have thousands of 2 second tracks such as "pero" and "nacht", but my Coverflow has thousand of pictures of these objects. In addition, she has also started using GarageBand to make her own music, which also makes it's way into my previously pristine and well-managed shared Music Library.
So, the question is, how can I allow a user to have BOTH read/write access to Shared Music Folder, AND have access to private Music folders within their account?

No, but you can make a second copy of the song file, and have each library only see its own.

Hello,
There are no files like that in that folder (com.apple.safari). They all have long numbers with .jpeg or .png at the end. That's what I meant by I cannot find any files like those mentioned in all the helps I read today. BTW-it's still crashing - no particular pattern to it at all.
The only two things I have downloaded recently is a new version of Flash and a Mac-driven update to Office.

If the file was not originally from iTunes, you'll need to redownload it from it's original source or rerip it from the CD. Files can sometimes go bad and become corrupted. As to how or why that happens, there are a number of ways.
What format are the problematic tracks in? Have you tried converting them to another format in iTunes?

Consolidating music ERROR Need help!

When I go to consolidate my music into the iTunes folder I get a Error message.
+"Copying music failed. The file name was invalid or too long"+
Any one have this problem and know how to fix it? I want to clean up my hard drive and this is one of the steps i plan on taking, but its not working.

The problem is what is says in the error message, one or more of your music file names, including the path, is too long for iTunes.
Check through your music folders to look for long file names, List view is best for this.
If you don't fancy doing it manually, I came across this utility;
