Multiple sites created in iWeb '08 / Personal Domains for Each?

If I create more than one site in iWeb, can each site have its own Personal Domain?
So far, I have created 2 sites: When I publish the first one, it shows up on the web as http://web.mac.com/myname/nameofmysite/etc (which is fine). But I would like for the 2nd site to go to my personal url.
I registered my domain name with GoDaddy, and have gone thru the process of assigning the CNAME at GoDaddy and Personal Domain at mac.com
The problem is: When I click on Visit Published Site in iWeb, it goes to my domain name (www.mydomainname.com/my2ndsitename), but still showing the standard "placeholder" home page at GoDaddy.
What do I need to do to make my ONLY my 2nd site show up at my personal url? And do I still need to do something else at GoDaddy to make my actual site appear at my personal domain url?

The site you want to use CNAME with must be the topmost site in the organizer at the left side inside the iWeb app when you publish (or the last site you publish if you are using separated Domain files).
It would be good to provide your url(s) if you want further help.
Only one CNAME type pointing can be used per account, but you can use ordinary forwarding/masking for other sites, where you just type the longer url (http://web.mac.com/username/sitename) into a form at the place which has your name.

  • Site made with iWeb using personal domain name

I have created a web site on iWeb 08 and have a personal domain name through Network Solutions.
The website was published to Mobile Me after "set up personal domain" was done. The C Name record was changed at Network Solutions to web.me.com. When I write the domain name in the browser a box comes down asking "idisk.mac.com" wants user name and password.
    1. Why is it asking for this?
    2. every ID and Password I put in, it tells me is incorrect? Ahhhhhhhh What does it want from me?
Please help - I've waisted so much time on this (since last week).
The website name is www.theplazarealty.com is you want to take a look.
    Thank you

This relates to a problem I can't find in the iWeb manual. Where is my iWeb site actually published to, so I can accurately update it using FTP software, and which method to use for publishing it to domain names?
I have created two websites for two different purposes each with a personal domain (one hosted, the other with webforwarding), and through ignorance have done all three options Publish to MobileMe / Publish All to MobileMe / and Publish to a folder (my home computer user Sites folder). As a result I have three Sites folders each containing both 'mysites'- Computer/user/Sites/sitename, or iDisk/user/Sites/sitename, or iDisk/user/Web/Sites/sitename - all different sizes, worryingly, leaving me unclear which is doing what. What is the diff between Publish All to MMe and Publish to MMe - they both seem to entail both sites totally republishing even if only one page has changed. Each time, of course, it takes several minutes or more to clear through the publishing process, and then some 20-30mins more to synchronise with FTP before I find out whether I've only used the duff old version after all. What is the difference between the three Sites destination folders? Can the difference be used productively? Should I, eg, ensure my sites exist both on my computer and iDisk as backup?
Further confusing factor is that when I log into MMe and look at my folders icon on my iDisk, which are Sites and Web/Sites, the contents of the two 'mysites' folders listed under both areas are different from the SITES/iWeb display listed below them, which seems to be a truncated sort of merger of the 'mysites' contents without their separation into two. Is that iWeb item under SITES on the folders page listing a fourth set of the contents,or what?
Now to synchronising/updating: which Sites folder to use to synchronise the websites with. Can I get updating in sync with republishing? My domain host UKcentric does not provide the CNAME options you have all talked about and they are unobtainable on my hosted domain page. I sent him the web.me.com message as described in the iWeb Personal Domain instrux, but he has persistently instructed me to use FTP software to upload and update the sites. He is not Mac-friendly, he admits. I have now used three programs, ClassicFTP, FileZilla and Cyberduck, all of which seem to be rather different and none of them has told me the sync has completed (the connection drops out, etc - it does take a long time, say 30-40mins to do, and I never know when I "resume" whether it'll pick up where it was or go back to zero start). If I am stuck with this laborious method of regular manual updating, I want to know I am using the correct Sites folder to synchronise the website with. None of this is clarified in the iWeb manual. Can anyone help?

  • Editing a site created with Iweb - with another program

    Hello,
I built a website for a friend and he wants to be able to make small changes on it from time to time and I downloaded a WYSIWYG editor and none of them are compatible with sites created with Iweb...
Does anyone have any suggestions? He runs a windows machine.
    Thank you so much!!!

Well, not really. A lot of people have their sites built for them and then, with a little guidance, can change out photos, or do a little editing here and there. So your idea certainly has merit.
The problem is, iWeb is a unique html generator. It stores everything you create in the application in a single file, (Domain.sites2), and only the application itself can open this file for editing. iWeb doesn't even create the html until you publish the site, either to a folder or to an Apple server. iWeb also changes many things into .png files--including text--believe it or not, in a well intentioned effort to cross platform better with other browser applications. So even simple text editors, which would normally be fine for changing small things in most websites, will struggle.
Your idea was a good one; it is iWeb that isn't a good candidate for it.
You must therefore now convince this person to become an Apnewbie, and buy a Mac!

  • Personal Domain for two sites on Family Pack

Can you use two personal domains with iWeb if you are using a Family Pack/.mac?
I have a single .mac now for family and would like to upgrade to family pack and have a small portion for an upcoming home business with its own personal doman.
    TIA

I think you want something setup like I have right now - and it works. I have two sites on .mac using iWeb. The first main site is designated with a personal domain. The second has one, but I cannot use it because the whole .mac preference is for all the sites. So I went to my host name provider (domainit.com) and they offer one free "forward" for that personal domain - all I did was type in the site name where it should point to. Now, it wasnt the standard "web.mac.com" because my .mac is designated with a personal domain. For that second site it is mypersonaldomain.com/site. When I enter my domain for that second site, it says the namein the browser bar, but at the bottom of the browser you can see the original full path of mypersonaldomain.com/site.
So, you dont need to have another web host (web space/storage). You can have a primary personal domain working with .mac and then have the second personal domain point to (forward) the second site (that now is a sub of the first personal domain).
Now that I talked in circles, HTH just a bit.

  • Multiple URLs for different sites created on iWeb?

When I created a second site and went to publish it, the site was given the same URL (web address) as the first site I created. Does iWeb not identify new sites with unique URLs? Essentially my question is does each MobileMe account only support a single website?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. When publishing multiple sites to to a MobileMe account the last published site will be accessible via the simple URL: http://web.me.com/youraccountname/
However each site has it's own URL which would be:
    http://web.me.com/youraccount_name/sitename
So you need to tack on the site name at the end of the simple URL.
For what it's worth I use iWebSites to manage over 40 individual sites.. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
If you have multiple sites in one domain file here's the workflow I used to split them into individual site files with iWebSites. Be sure to make a backup copy of your original Domain.sites files before starting the splitting process and move it to another location on your HD until you're satisfied the separation process is completed and what you want.
This lets me edit several sites and only republish the one I want. It's something you might want to take a look at.

  • Managing multiple sites in different iWeb versions - PLEASE HELP!

apnewbie/cyclosaurus/roddy/old toad (and any others more knowledgeable than i):
i've run into a bit of a pickle. i am hoping someone can help straighten me out. i am about to jump out of a window. here's the rundown:
(for starters, i have a .mac account and am publishing to .mac.) i created a site in iWeb 1.1.2 on my work computer (mac book pro). worked great, really lovely. thought to myself, "hey, i'd like to create another site from home, but i don't have iWeb at home (powerbook G4) - i should buy iLife 08 so i can build these things from home and not have personal files on my work computer."
so: i had a site that i created within 1.1.2 with files written to iDisk. i purchased iWeb 08 and would like to have another site, but this one is being created in 2.0. i also am using a personal domain name this time around bought with google apps and hosted by godaddy. i published the new work in progress for a test run and...you guessed it...my original 1.1.2 site was rewritten by the 2.0 site. and the 2.0 site comes up as the standard google search page for domains that aren't up and running. whooopsie.
sorry for the lengthy intro, but that's the background. i guess my specific questions are:
    1) i want to be able to maintain multiple sites from iWeb 2.0...can i open my 1.1.2 domain file in 2.0 and successfully bring that site into 2.0?
    2) what is the most efficient and easiest way to get both of these sites running in 2.0? right now i have two domain files (created on two different computers).
    3) for domain management, is it best to move from the iWeb folder in my home library to different folders (one for each site, with separate domain files, and my 2.0 domain file is NOT called domain, it's the name of the site) to another location? (and of course, i will back these up just in case.) and when i want to update a site, i just open that individual domain file, right? or will these sites publish over each other?
please help. i am at my wits end. i'm sure this is a relatviely simple issue, but i'm new to iWeb.
thanks, thanks, thanks for your help guys.
    joojy

    joojy,
    Welcome to the forums!
First of all, your original 1.1.2 site may not, in fact, have been overwritten. It is quite possible that the site remains in it's position on the iDisk, Web/Sites/iWeb/YourSite, but because you published to the iDisk (.Mac) from 2.0, a different index.html file has been placed in the root level Web directory which is causing the 404 error. Navigate to the directory on the iDisk, using the Go menu in Finder, and look to see what is actually there. Follow this path:
    Go/iDisk/My iDisk/Web/Sites/iWeb/YourSiteWillBeHereIfYourLuckIsGood
If your site is there, great; if it isn't, it's not really a problem because hopefully you still have the Domain.sites file on the MacBook Pro and you can republish it if necessary. If it is there, you can modify the index.html file on the iDisk using a text editor and get your url redirected back to where it should be.
Second, do not open your 1.1.2 Domain.sites file with 2.0 until you have a backup of this Domain file. External drives are best for this. Assuming the backup is in place, launch 2.0, choose the Domain.sites file, and click on "update". It will be updated to a Domain.sites2 file. If the site looks ok then continue on with editing/publishing.
Skipping to question (3), by all means, abandon the default location of the Domain.sites file in the Home folder's Library and get accustomed to keeping your Domain files in their own, respective folders. When you want to open one just double-click it.
You are going to encounter difficulties publishing multiple sites in 2.0.2, unless you keep all of the sites in a single Domain file. 2.0 is publishing to a different directory on the iDisk than 1.0; it publishes to /Web/Sites/, as opposed to /Web/Sites/iWeb/. Publishing a site from a separate Domain file erases previously published sites. I have been able to publish multiple sites, from multiple Domain.sites2 files, by mounting the iDisk and actually moving the Site folder back one level, into the root Web folder, and then publishing. When finished, I move it back again. If you have RSS feeds you will probably get a 'file in use' error. The alternative, (other than keeping all sites in a single Domain), is to publish the site to a folder and then manually drop the Site folder into the Web/Sites/ directory on the iDisk. Of course, some .Mac functions are lost when publishing this way.
Work through this info and post back.

  • Personal domain for one site but not another

Hope someone can help. I have my family site set up through iWeb on Mobile me. I would like to create a "new" site that would be for a group I am involved in and for which I have obtained a personal domain name. I would like to know if the personal domain name can be used for the "new" site and not for my family site. I have tried to "add new site", put in the personal domain name, but then when I look at the bottom of the screen it shows my mobileme account name and then in parens it shows the personal domain name on both my family site and the "new" site.
Hope someone knows something about this! Thanks!

Yes, you can change the URL for the domain name. I suggest you split the domain file. I use iWebSites to manage multiple sites.. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.

Once you get the two sites published separately you should be able to go in and change the CNAME to the URL of the site you want.

  • Organizing multiple websites created by iWeb

I could do what I'm about to suggest via any text editor and some HTML code, but I'd like to aks the cognoscenti here about the feasibility of doing all of this entirely via iWeb.
I have (will have more) multiple websites on the same theme. I would like to create a master web page which will access these other pages via objects attached to links that access them.
Each website would be under its own directory structure. The main page would have the familiar index.html >> home.html, utilizing my domain name's link to index.html. However, in the various directories, each index.html produced by iWeb would be removed as it appears redundant if the linkage to a domain name is not required. The links in the master web page would call home.html in each of the sub-directories. Only the master web page would link to the domain name via index.html.
    Sound reasonable?

    Hi Rusty Rat
My first site in iWeb is called
Alaskadream (It is the welcome page)
I have 4 more sites in iWeb called
    -ita (italian version)
    -de (german version)
    -en (english version)
    -fr (french version)
So a site for each language
Total 5 sites (all displaying in iWeb).
when you get to my website entering the url http://www.alyeska.altervista.org/ you get redirected to the first page. This page is an index page (master) like you want to build it as far as I understand. So from there you choose which language (thus which site) you want to visit. I skipped the index file of the other sites (link to 'One of my pages' and 'FirstPageOfTheSite') so it's getting directly into the site. All done within iWeb. No need for any html editor.

    Cédric

  • Using existing .Mac pages in iWeb to personal domain

I've tried to find a way to take my existing .Mac pages and move them to my new domain. I made these pages way back when .Mac first started. Does anyone know if it's possible to bring in your existing .Mac pages, then change them to a personal domain?

Can't be done, as iWeb cannot import anything.
If you have a MobileMe account, then it should be possible to move your homepage and place it in the Sites folder on your iDisk.

  • IWeb 08 Personal Domain Setup - HELP!!!

I own a domain through Godaddy and host my iWeb site on .Mac. I have always used Godaddy's domain forwarding to redirect www.lucascantor.com to web.mac.com/lucascantor. Now that Apple has included a personal domain feature in iWeb, I followed their instructions to set up my site so that instead of redirecting to web.mac.com/lucascantor, www.lucascantor.com simply is the url. Now www.lucascantor.com just goes to a Godaddy page. I have waited 48 hours and nothing has changed. Even if I re-enable domain forwarding, I still see the godaddy page in place of my site.
    My settings look like this:
    Apple: http://tinyurl.com/34dlp4
    Godaddy: http://tinyurl.com/33k75x
Somebody please let me know if there is something I need to change,
    Thanks!

You have two ways to use a personal domain name with .Mac:
    a) The one which has already been available for years, namely using domain forwarding and masking. I guess that is what you are doing now
    b) The new one which has you make a CNAME entry. This has a number of advantages over a), including a url in the browser address bar of the form http://www.mydomain.com/sitename/pagename.html, no forwarding/masking involved.
If the place you have your domain does not let you do b), then you are stuck with a) or you need to change the place where your name is located.
If you want something else, best host your site on a different server, as least for the next couple years.

Welcome to the discussions. No, you can't drag the published site back into iWeb — only iWeb's Domain file can be opened in iWeb. See this Apple doc on How to back up MobileMe data. It says:
Any websites you have published with iWeb should still be available within iWeb. iWeb stores everything in a Domain file, normally located in the ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder (although it can be moved). If you no longer have this file, you can view your currently published pages and manually recreate them within iWeb, but there is no way to import published pages back into iWeb. You can manually back up the Domain file, or use Backup to back it up.
    See also these Apple docs:

But Spotlight does not look in all areas of the hard drive. Download and run Find File to search for ".sites2".
