Multiple sound outputs

Hi... I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the correct section.. but here goes.
I have purchased a small usb sound card for my macbook to set up as a secondary audio output for use with some dj software I have on my macbook Pro.
I basically need the os to see two separate sound outputs on my system.
I want to use the usb sound card as a secondary  output for a set of headphones that i want to use to preview tracks.
I have done some research online and believe that it has something to do with setting up an aggregate device, but I can't seem to get the setup correct to make it work.
Any assistance would be appreciated..

Hi Lang23,
If you go to the iLife Garageband Community, you will find the answer to your question there! That is the place where the sound fund's work!
Kind regards

  • Multiple sound output streams?

Hi list. I've got a question about sound output. Specifically, when I do voicechat with things like iChat or Ventrilio, I want that to use my USB headphones for its audio output, even though I'm also listening to iTunes on my normal analog output.
Is it possible to use multiple output streams like this? And if not, why not?

Okay, never mind. I found it as a per-application preference. Silly me.

  • Traktor Pro multiple sound outputs

Hi everyone. I am in the process of setting up Traktor on my MBP.
Can anyone confirm if i can route the main output to a bluetooth speaker AND have the headphone cue routed via the headphone jack? At the moment i can get the master output to the bluetooth speaker but no joy in getting the headphones output working...

Create an aggregate device of your Built in and Firewire devices in AudioMidiSetup.
Install JackOSX, set it's preference to your new aggregate driver, start the router, set AMS to use Jack for I/O, open an app to play your music and connect its output send channels to whatever system playback channels you want in Jack Connection manager.

  • Registers as HDMI sound output?

Hi, I am using a Macbook Pro 13 in Retina. I have been using an HDMI cord to plug sound in, but after disconnecting the HDMI cord... my Mac still is registering the HDMI cord as the primary sound output?
There is no sound even when I plug the HDMI cord now. I have restarted the computer multiple times. Help!

  • Multiple Audio Outputs

First off before I get to the point...
I would have submitted this through the iTunes feature request form, but it's been removed. "iTunes feedback" is now simply "what would you like to buy".
Anyway... I've got two audio outputs on my system - built in audio which goes to the internal speakers, and USB audio which goes to some better external speakers. I'd like to use the internal ones for regular stuff, and the external ones for "real" audio apps.
Most "real" audio apps are smart enough to detect external speakers, and let you select them explicitly, while non-audio apps just use the default, so it works fine...
    Except iTunes doesn't support this.
Why can't I explicity select the Audio ouput I want to use. It's not a security/copyright thing, as I can already output to the device by setting it as the default output.
iTunes should spot multiple audio out devices, and pop them up in the Computer/airtunes button.
(actually Airtunes SHOULD be a regular audio device, and then this would all work as it should, but that's a different argument, which I'm not going to win).
    Ian

You can select your sound outputs using system preferences. select sound , select device output.
or you can go into utilities and open audio midi setup and choose your system output.
    Hope this helps:)

  • Installed Ensoniq AudioPCI SB32 - now I cannot play multiple sounds simultaneou

I started with an el-cheapo on-board sound card (SiS 708). I just installed a Creative Ensoniq AudioPCI SB32 and can no longer play multiple sounds simultaneously.
For example: if I am playing an MP3, WAV, or otherwise an audio file that uses the sound card's WAV output, other sounds such as the Windows event sounds or sounds assigned in my FTP application. I *could* do this without a problem using the SiS 708 card.
    More info:
    - I did leave the SiS 708 installed. Could this be conflicting?
    - I set the default I/O sound devices to the Creative Ensoniq in the control panel
How can I play multiple simultaneous audio again?Message Edited by epp_b on 0-07-2006 07:48 PM

I have tried the following things:
    - Uninstalling and disabling the onboard sound
    - Installing the latest version of DirectX
I can't think of anything else (there are no updated Creative drivers that I can find)

  • Multiple sound devices mayhem (wiki not helping)

In my computer, there are 3 things wanting to pretend to be sound devices:
*) The motherboard (HDA Intel PCH ALC892)
*) The USB webcam, logitec quickcam 9000 Pro --> Microphone only, yet this thing manages to confuse Linux into thinking it's a soundcard, thereby disabling all sound
*) The nvidia graphics card. Don't ask me how a graphics card can make sound, but does a hdmi port maybe have the ability to make sound or so??
Anyway, while using Skype, sometimes microphone works, sometimes it doesn't. I want my own microphone (plugged into the motherboard on the rear side) as mic, NOT the webcam, and definitely not the graphics card. Sometimes, the microphone is device 0,0, sometimes it's 1,0, and sometimes it's called "default".
Also, whenever booting into KDE, it gives some window about "forgetting" sound devices it detected last time.
Every boot, they're all there, but I think they sometimes swap positions or names.
I actually want ONLY the motherboard as sound device, and want Linux to treat the webcam as video only, and the graphics card as graphics only. And I want it to stabilize, so that I make it work in alsamixer, xmms and skype ONCE, and then it remains working forever without randomly changing.
Any ideas what I can do here? Thanks!
The wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ad … chitecture) isn't helping, it's asking to edit a file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf that doesn't exist and isn't very clear about what format the name of the sound device to give should be, and the alsaconf they mention in the wiki is now disabled in arch...

You can also give your different sound devices fixed indices (fixed order). If not exists, create a file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf or /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf or whatever .conf and define the order of sound slots:
    #/etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf
    options snd slots=snd-hda-intel,snd-usb-audio,...
First slot: card 0, second slot: card 1, ...
There is another handy option to give your devices neat custom names like
    #/etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf
    options snd slots=snd-hda-intel,snd-usb-audio,...
    options snd-hda-intel id="onboard"
    options snd-usb-audio id="logitec"
    Hope this helps!
Edit: more about multiple sound devices here at the alsa wiki.

  • Multiple sound channels

I'm just about to buy a new iMac.  Can I get it with multiple sound channels for DJ mixing?

I believe the audio output of the iMac can output a 5.1 channel "digital" signal now.  There are no Options available for other output variations.
    Hope this helps

  • Sound Output from Logic Express 8 with new USB Guitar Pedal

Hello, everyone. I am guitarist. I have just bought an effects pedal from Vox called the Tonelab ST, which has a USB out. When I connect it to my G5, Logic sees it okay, and selects it as the audio device in the Preferences pane. The problem is that it shuts off my sound output and reroutes it through the USB pedal. If I hook the pedal up to my amp, I hear both. I tried adjusting the sound output through the System Preferences, but that is okay. If I start a different program (like iTunes) it plays through my system like normal. Does anyone have any suggestions?

You need some pro help. I'm only a stand-in while others aren't addressing your difficulties. I would suggest poring over the manual.
Some thoughts: I have seen demos of folks using multiple output options and switching among them. Me, i'm only using one input (my mixer) and one output (my mixer). I run my guitar into the mixer to record while running other tracks out to the mixer to monitor. When I've recorded a part I play back the entire thing through the mixer. I used a Firewire Solo (which I do not recommend) as the analog/digital converter between the mixer and computer. Now I'm using a little USB gizmo that came with my new Behringer mixer and i address is as "USB Audio Codec" in Logic.
So in Prefereces > Devices > Core Audio I have it set to "USB Audio Code" and this functions as BOTH my input and output. Well: How to get multiple outputs. I think you'll have to go to the part in the manual that addresses "Environments" and add another output mechanism, specificall distinguishing between your preferred output options.
In your above post you say you record something and it "sounds great". How are you monitoring this to conclude how it sounds? Outside of Logic? I asked whether you were routing your playback audio (of your "input 2") and you didn't say. It is routing to "Output 1-2". Does "Output 1-2" in the mixer display bounce up and down indicating output activity? Does the "Master" fader in the mixer display bounce indicating output activity?

  • Suddenly no sound output from speakers ?!?  Option vanished?

My sound suddenly stopped working.  I have never had problems with it before.
When I go into Preferences > Sound, and select Output tab, the only option is "Digital Out - Optical Digital Out Port".
There is a red light glowing out of where the headphones should go, but with nothing plugged in there, there is no sound through the speakers.
I have NEVER used any sort of optical sound device, so I have no idea how this situation came to be or how to fix it?
If I plug in headphones into the jack, the Sound Output Tab changes to "Headphones - Headphone Port", and the sound works through the headphones, but when I unplug, it switches back to the Digital Out- Optical", and the built in speakers never work or appear as an option?
    Any ideas?!
    Mark

OK  - this is weird - I tried rebooting and unplugging headphones several times, and repeated this multiple times over several hours last night, but the red glow started again immediately.  I left MacBook asleep all day today, and when I came back and opened it up, it was playing through the speakers?!
So I'm not sure I get it, but it seems to be OK for now - thanks!

  • MBP Retina No Sound Output device found

I use my MBPR with thunderbolt monitor and often use the 'Display Audio' option when plugged into them.  2 days ago, when I unplugged the thunderbolt monitor, there was no longer an 'internal speakers' option in the sound prefs pane.
It does still show the 'Display Audio' option when plugged into the TB display, however that is the only audio option now, other than any available airplay devices in range.
I did SMC reset & PRam reset, multiple times to no avail.  I then called apple support and they walked me thru the same things, as well as eventually deleting these 2 plists from the library > prefrences > audio folder:
    com.apple.audio.SystemSettings
    com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings
This also did not return the audio device to the sound prefs pane.
I had a friend with the same laptop, same specs, send me his version of those plists, as mine were missing sevral keys that his had.  None of that worked.  Wondering if anyone else has seen their internal audio device disappear on the MBPRs?  I read up on HDMI audio threads, but the their problems seemed to be with MB Air & not very relevant to this problem.
    Thanks.

    Hi-
Does the G4 make the start up chime?
In System Preferences/Sound/Output, is the "Mute" button selected? Is the volume set?
Do you know that the internal speaker worked before you got the G4?
Have you tried headphones or speakers in the sound output jack?
If the output jack isn't shown in the preferences, and you have no chime on start up, you may have hardware problems.
Just for fun, try a PRAM/NVRAM reset:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
Maybe the sound problem is why the machine only cost you $20...........

  • Can not change sound output. Help Please

Well, i've been digging all the forums lately in web. my problem is, i can't change my 'system' sound output to my sound card which is Native Instruments Audio8 Dj.
Let me explain my problem decently. I do the usual procedure, system preferences > sound > n then select the output. but nothing happens. it is always set on internal speakers or headphone or whatever plugged in to the *Built-in Output*. I try switching from audio-midi setup n that doesn't work as well. The system perfectly recognizes the sound card, i can get output from sound card with applications which have their own output settings. But i cant change the system output. I have the latest version of soundflower loaded(this might be causing the problem who knows), i used many soundcards before(or maybe even ex-drivers?) n they used to work until i updated to snow leopard. I also tried trashing the files in macintosh hd > library > preferences > audio >>
and those files *did not regenerate* after restart(like 10 times), so i had to copy them from my imac.(hehe). i tried resetting pram or nvram.(didn't do any good too)And also i tried trashing soundpref.plist which didn't do me any good neither. Now i need that sound card to give me my system output. I don't need drivers of any other ex-sound cards or whatever. My drivers are up to date. And im pretty sure this ain't an hardware fail.
    So, any ideas? Thx.

I am having the exact same problem. I have spoken with Apple Care and they are having my case reviewed by "Engineers," apparently. Its very frustrating as I cannot listen to iTunes or any of my video games through my really nice monitor speakers. FYI, I had this problem without installing Sound Flower, since then I have installed it in the hopes that having something different to select it might work but no changes. If I hear any good news from Apple I will be back to let you know. This seems to be a very rare problem as I have only found one other post about this issue.

  • The sound output does not work on my ipod

    Hi There,
I have an Ipod 4 th generation and the sound output no longer works on any device.  I've reset and reinstalled the software but nothing appears to work?
    Any ideas please?
    Serial number: 9C6463XJV9R
    Thanks Chris

If none of the 5 R's helped address the issue, it's likely hardware related.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
As to what exactly is damaged/faulty, no there is no certain way to tell.  It could be the iPod's audio chip or something else on the logic board.
Either way you'll need to have your iPod serviced/replaced either by Apple or a third party company.

I saw your post regarding the motherboard problems. If the HP service centre has told you that audio port is damaged you will have to replace the motherboard if you want sound. Page 75 of the Maintenance and Service Guide will show you how to replace it. The part number for your motherboard or system board as they are called in notebooks is 683031-501. You can order the part from HP PartsSurfer just search for the part number.

  • Help with sound output via HDMI

My sound output via HDMI suddenly stopped worked to my TV set. I've reset the PRAM and the SMC. When I go to sound control panel for sound output, the setting is on Headphones. When I try to change it to SV420XVT1A (the tv) it immediately jumps back to headphone. I also tried a different HDMI cable to a different HDMI port on the tv. This just started after the Mac Mini had been turned off for a week. I'm using Lion and it's an 8GB Intel Core 2 Duo. Any suggestions?

I actually discovered this answer about 5 minutes after I posted the question. Thanks a lot for your help!! Funny thing is that it had worked all along with something plugged in the headphone jack but suddenly stopped working. Again, thanks!
