Multiple speakers off single Airport Express

Dudes,
I have an Airport Express (AX) hooked up to my stereo.
Is it possible to run multiple speakers off it (using a splitter, or some such thing)so that I can have a little set of speakers in the kitchen as well as the living room?
Thanks,
JC

I think it would work too. Haven't tried it though.
The express is converting the digital input into a analogue voltage, which the stereo is amplifying.
If you split the cable (I'm assuming the splitter is not powered?) then remember that resisters in parallel reduce the resistance of the circuit (http://www.physics.uoguelph.ca/tutorials/ohm/Q.ohm.intro.parallel.html), which is what you would achieve.
As such to generate the same voltage, given the reduced resistance, the express has to pump more current (Ohms law). That's a bit of a simplification because it isn't a simple direct current, but the general rule applies: If you wanted to split it into 50 stereos I'm sure the Express wouldn't be powerful enough to pump enough current.
Two however, I think you would get away with. The second speakers would also need to be powered ,like your stereo is, of course.

  • I want to play multiple speakers off one Airport. is that possible?

I have an Airport express in my living room, but i want to have wireless music in my kitchen and bedroom. Would i need to buy an amplifier and connect it to the airport or can i play multiple speakers off one Airport OR should i buy multiple Airport's to achieve this?

You can either use multiple AirPorts or use an audio system that pipes music to speakers throughout the house.

  • Multiple stereos off of Airport Express

I was wondering if there is a way to connect my airport express up to a optical cable on my stereo and to the headphone jack from my harmon kardon soundsticks. This way it could run more speakers at once, is there a special cable that can split from the airport express into optical / spdif and rca / auxiliary. Thanks

I don't think such a cable exists. Why not run the optical cable from the Airport Express to your stereo, then run a standard analog audio cable from the "line out" output on your stereo to the Harmon Kardon Soundsticks.

I have a WiFi network, my living room speakers are connected directly to Airport Express, so how can I get the wireless bluetooth speakers to play at the same time in my bedroom?

Did you ever get this to work?  My guess is that the speakers are out of bluetooth range at that distance.

Ok, if you are connecting the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) to the existing wireless network, then the DSL in the next room is most likely a combination DSL modem and wireless router. Thanks for clarifying that for me.
Although they may only be separated by a single wall, the building material used in that wall may be enough to prevent the AX from receving a "good" signal from the DSL router.
Since I don't know what computing equipment you have available, please check out this AirPort User Tip: AirPort - Optimal Base Station Placement to see if you can get some SNR measurements at the location of your AX. To do this properly, you will want to power-off the AX and only get these measurements for the DSL router.

  • If I have my iMac internet sharing turned on, the Airport Utility won't recognize the Airport Express I want to use to stream iTunes to my stereo.  When I turn the iMac internet sharing off, the Airport Express appears but calls itself a base station.

If I have my iMac internet sharing turned on, the Airport Utility won't recognize the Airport Express I want to use to stream iTunes to my stereo.  When I turn the iMac internet sharing off, the Airport Express appears but calls itself a base station.  I just bought the Airport Express and it's not clear how I should set up my System Preferences for Sharing.  Thx

Yes. Unfortunately the stereo is too far from the wired ethernet connection   My iMac is connected to the internet using an ethernet cable from the DSL modem (plugged into the wall, not wireless).  The Airport Express is plugged into an outlet 25' away from the iMac and connected to my speakers.  I've turned on the iMac Airport wireless Internet Sharing, hoping to stream iTunes to the Express connected to the stereo.  The iMac Airport picks up several neighborhood networks so I know it's working (and I connected my iPhone wifi to it just to check as well).
When I use Airport Utility to set up the Express, the only time Utility recognizes the Express is when the iMac Airport is off.  When I turn on the iMac Airport, the Airport Utility immediately loses the Express and asks to rescan.
Maybe that explains my problem better.

    Hello Hornet12,
Indeed, iTunes 10.2 or later will be required to utilize AirPlay.

No, you cannot seperate the audio and video stream.
You can use optical audio to a sound system (I use sony sound bar) and play the audio via that.

  • Is there any way to stop the delay between different sets of speakers when using airport express?

Is there any way to stop the delay between different sets of speakers when using airport express?

Unfortunately, I don't have either a Slingbox or iHome speakers so I won't be able to reproduce any of the issues you are having. With the fact that you live in large apartment complex would still lead me to believe that Wi-Fi interference may be the reason that you are having streaming issues.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like iStumbler, or AirRadar to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible.

  • Single Airport Express with Multiple iTunes Clients ?

Is it possible for an Airport Express to be controlled by more than one copy of iTunes or does it have to be a unique pairing?
I have an office of Mac users who want to be able to play from their desktop iTunes libraries to an office stereo connected to an AE. Obviously they can't all play at once... But will they all be able to see a single AE and stream to it on a first come first served basis?
I can't find anything relevant on Apple site or by googling. Everything is about one copy of iTunes to Multiple Airport Expresses (Expressi?).
    Thanks in advance
    greg.

Yes, they can play music through iTunes off each of their desktops. Here's the catch...if someone has the AirportExpress picked as their selected speaker, nobody else can play music through it until that user changes the AE speaker back to "Computer" via iTunes on their desktop. All of the other users would see a message that another computer is using that speaker.

  • Can connect wireless speakers to my airport express

im looking to have 2 aiport express units in my house, one for the kitchen area and one for the bedroom/bathroom. i understand i will not be able to stream 2 different playlists through the 2 different airports at the same time, is that correct?
if i have wireless speakers can i stream music to both the bathroom and the bedroom from one airport?
and finally, i have an apple mac, other than that, and aquiring the APE, is there anything else i need to buy, apple-wise, that i will need to make this work?(other than speakers of course)
thanks for your help in advance

That is correct. You cannot stream different iTunes playlist to separate AirPlay speakers. You can, however, stream the same playlist to multiple AirPlay speakers simultaneously.
if i have wireless speakers can i stream music to both the bathroom and the bedroom from one airport?
Unless these "wireless speakers" are AirPlay-enabled, then I believe the answer is no. That is because the speaker would have to be physically connected to the AirPort Express via the appropriate audio cable to receive the stream from the base station.
and finally, i have an apple mac, other than that, and aquiring the APE, is there anything else i need to buy, apple-wise, that i will need to make this work?(other than speakers of course)
Basically, you just need an iTunes server (iTunes host computer or iOS device) and an AirPlay speaker (AirPort Express, Apple TV, or other dedicated AirPlay devices from other manufacturers) to stream. What you currently have should do the trick.

  • Multiple Speaker Problem with Airport Express

I'm having an issue with my Airport Express in selecting Multiple Speakers. I have one Airport Express located in the Living Room, and have no problem playing music on that directly from iTunes. However I cannot play there and on the Mac at the same time. An error message comes up:
An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker "Living Room". An unknown error occurred (-15000).
I can clear the error and then go back to listening either in the living room or on the computer, but not both.
I have tried reinstalling everything...iTunes, Airport, Mac OSX, you name it.
    Any ideas anyone?

I may have a solution for you Shannon. My solution, found after a lengthly Apple Support call, applies to Tiger 10.4.11 however it likely applies to Leopard as well. The problem is with your Firewall settings which may be blocking UDP access and or have it operating under a Stealth Mode. It must be set to allow UDP Traffic.
In 10.4.11 under System preferences/Sharing/Firewall under the Advanced button there are three checkboxes "Block UDP Traffic" "Enable Firewall Logging" and "Enable Stealth Mode". Uncheck all three of these boxes and it should work.

  • ITunes sees remote speakers attached to airport express, but can't connect

"An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker "Airport Express". The network connection failed."
    iTunes 9.1(79)
    Airport Extreme Base Station
Early model Airport Express connected to remote speakers
iTunes see the speakers in the drop down menu, and the airport express is connected to my network. I restored the airport express to factory defaults and started over. Same thing. Firmware shows as being current. Express has steady green light.
Any ideas? I am getting ready for my iPad, and need to get this fixed.
    Thanks in advance.

Same problem for me. Ever since I upgraded to 10.6.3 and iTunes 9.1, about once per week I'll get the error message when trying to get iTunes/Airtunes to connect to my older Airport Express (running firmware 6.3) "An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker <insert speaker name here>. The network connection failed." (No error codes are given.)
Airport Utility sees the offending Airport Express just fine (and there's a green light on said AE).
Curiously, a newer AE-n, elsewhere in the house (running firmware 7.4.2) does NOT exhibit this problem.
Simply restarting the offending AE does NOT clear the problem. Restarting the main router - a Time Capsule DOES clear the problem. Alternatively, toggling off the Airtunes functionality on the offending AE, restarting it, then toggling Airtunes back on, and finally restarting it DOES clear the problem (as an alternate to restarting the router). No matter how the problem is cleared, it returns within a week. It's frustrating that the problem cannot be recreated immediately.
Probably not relevant, but the computer on which I'm running iTunes (a Mac Mini) is connected to my TC via ethernet, not wirelessly.
I've tried the suggestion of disabling ipv6. No effect.
I fear the only solution will be to scrap my older Airport Express and replace it with a newer n-model. But before I resign myself to the $100 fix, any more ideas?

  • ITunes doesn't connect to remote speakers on my Airport Express?!?

Can you help me solve this technical issue? I have a Linksys wireless router with another device as a wireless repeater (to extend my wireless network). On the other end of this wireless network is my AirPort Express with the AirTunes enabled.
I can ping my AirPort Express from my iMac. But, my iTunes is not successful connecting to the speakers. Can you suggest some remedies for this? Thanks in advance.
    James

Thank you for the quick suggestions. Here are the facts:
    1) iTunes host are on the same network subnet as the AX. I can see both of them on my router. The iMac which the iTunes is running can ping the AX. In fact, the remote speaker is listed in the popup window that shows the built-in Speaker as "Computer" and the name of the AirTune on the AX.
    2) No firewalls between the host and the AX...as far as I know or can tell, all ports are opened within the home network.
    3) The AirPort Utility can see the AX and let's me update the configuration without any problem.
    4) OS X Firewall on my iMac is set to Allow all incoming connections
Again, I'm stucked and confused because my iMac can find the AX thru the AirPort Utility as well as from the iTunes by listing the AX's speaker in the Remote Speakers list.
Why then it cannot connect to it to play music is very big mystery...help! I really like to play music in my backyard.
