Multiple SSIDs, but the 802.1x network always weaker

Just now starting to poke at this- we have an open-auth network and an 802.1x network. In areas where we are more hot-spotty and a client can only see a single AP, we're getting a fair number of reports that the 802.1x network is weaker in signal out of the same AP than the open WLAN is. My first thought is that it's likely in the way that RSSI/"bars" are displayed on individual clients, but we're also hearing that the 802.1x nework in these spots was too weak to use, but when jumping over to the open network, the connection was usable. Has anyone else had to deal with this perception?

Lee
As the signal strength is normally calculated from the beacon transmitted by the AP and it is the same regardless of authentication used. Are the users seeing only one AP or one SSID. the real question is what is the signal level in tha area that you are having trouble. According to the manufacturer what data rate is supported at that signal level, what data rate does the client show. Are they running the latest drivers. What does the event log on the AP say about the connection.
Hope this helps.

Same with Bluetooth, as long as you're looking at the screen, it will be searching. As soon as you exit the screen it stops, so quit looking at that screen. You know your refrigerator light? You open the door and it's on...trust me, close the door & the light goes off .

    Hi team,
I  have multiple SSID, but want users of a single SSID to be redirected to a HTTP or HTTPS URL (LAN SERVER for authentication)
I am very curious and it is important. I want to see how to achieve this with CISCO WLC !!!

I wanted if someone connects to WLAN "MO-GUEST" automatically the user should be redirected to http://10.229.3.99/login.html and once authenticated by 10.229.3.99 , he/she should be allowed to access anything as normal. [ actually i just want automatic url redirection for the first time for the user of wlan "MO-GUEST"

  • The pdf file that i am converting has multiple pages but the conversion only exports the 1st page into excel.  How do i get the product to include all pages on multiple sheets?

    Hi,
The pdf file that I am converting has multiple pages but the conversion only exports the 1st page into excel.  How do i get the product to include all pages on multiple sheets?

    Hi christinek,
Can you please tell me how the PDF that you're converting was created? Sometimes, PDF files created by third-party PDF generators (that is non-Adobe applications), don't contain all the tags and file information necessary to ensure a proper conversion to Excel. There are no settings that you can change in ExportPDF to adjust how the file is imported.
You can tell how the PDF was created by choosing File > Properties in Reader and looking for the PDF Producer on the Description tab. If the PDF was created by a third-party, it just may not be written to spec. Please see Support Policy for PDF Files created by non Adobe applications.

I'd start with the following document, with one modification. At step 12 after typing GEARAspiWDM press the Enter/Return key once prior to clicking OK. (Pressing Return adds a carriage return in the field and is important.)

  • I have a dualband Airport Express. Why is my Macbook air default connecting to the 802.11g network instead of the n one?

I'm using a dualband Airport Express:
    http://www.apple.com/airport-express/specs/
Recently, I've noticed that my wi-fi speeds vary alot. I went into About this Mac---> System info -----> system report and went to wi-fi. Turns out it says my current configuration is on the 802.11g network. Under other connections, it lists my identical wi-fi as 802.11n.
How can i make it connect to the 802.11n connection by default?
    Much appreciated,

G-band networks generally will have a stronger signal than n-band.
Tell it to ignore the g network and only connect to the N-band network.
Open Network System Prefs, select WiFi, and click Advanced...
    Click on the WiFi tab.
Find you g-band network in the list and delete it.
Check the box to Remember networks this computer has joined.

  • Can I use multiple SSIDs on the same intranet in close proximity?

Can Multiple APs running the same or different channels be used with different SSIDs to create seperate wireless networks on the same intranet?
Example: 4 APs running on the same floor of a small building, 2 APs using SSID named ABC using channels 1 &6. The other 2 APs using SSID named XYZ using channels 1 & 6 or even 6 & 11.
Will this scenario work to create two seperate wireless networks on the same intranet or will this cause problems with all wireless traffic?

For you to understand, the channel is a subdivision of the "physical" medium. The SSID is a logical subdivision that is stacked on the physical medium/frequency/channel.
You can run several "logical" networks (based on different SSID) on one single (physical) channel/frequency. Clients of each "logical" network won't see and won't be able to talk (radio level) with the clients of the other "logical network" /SSID. However, if they operate on the same channel/frequency, they will interfere and your throughput will be affected since they nevertheless share the same (physical) frequency.
It's very similar to the difference between IP addresses and MAC addresses. You may have 2 stations in the same "collision domain" (MAC level; Physical network; subject to collision with each other packets) while they can't speak together without a router because on an IP standpoint they are not in the same subnet (logical network).
So, your solution will work, both networks will be independent at a logical level, but when both 'logical networks" share the same frequency ("collision domain(!)") the throughput will be affected subsequently (all stations of both "logical networks" are operating on the same frequency/channel).

  • HP Color LaserJet 1500L - drops off the 802.11n network

My HP Color LaserJet 1500L drops off the network (it just stops printing). This happens when it is plugged into the usb bus of my new 802.11n base station or directly into the usb bus of a computer. The only way to fix it seems to be to plug it directly into a computer and unplug the usb plug and replug it, or to add the printer again. This problem has occurred in the past, but over time, and after various upgrades to the operating systems and hardware, etc, the situation tends to change. Before I installed the 802.11n base station the printer was staying in contact with my computers, but now it is misbehaving again. I doubt there is a real solution out there now, because it happened before and I never did discover a direct fix, but I thought the problem to be worth posting. This problem does not happen with my Canon PhotoPrinter iP6000S, which sticks to my network like glue whereever I plug it in (airport express, airport extreme, direct to computer, etc.) The HP loses contact with either of my computers in exactly the same way.
Mac Pro Intel Core 2 Duo, and iMac Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   airport express, airport extreme 802.11n, cable modem
iMac Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

To use the OS X standard network protocols (Windows/IP printing), you must have either a postscript printer (the driver in that case is just a ppd for the OS X postscript output) OR, a driver designed to work with CUPS (CUPS driver). HP doesn't provide CUPS drivers for OS X (who knows why, since they do for linux).
You need to install foomatic and ESP ghostscript:
    http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/foomatic/
    then, install the foo2oak driver:

  • I can't set up because it defaults to move my stuff from mobileme, but the mobileme redirect it always goes to is CLOSED.

Once again, Apple assumes majority == everyone.
    NO.
Unlike everyone else on earth, I HAVE NOT moved my junk from mobileme yet. So now, when I log in for the first time in ages and go to set up iCloud, the mechanism always redirects me to move my junk as the first part of setup. BUT the redirection target is a goofy "closed" sign, that takes me to icloud.com, where we repeat the cycle ad infinitum.
Has anyone else been through this and resolved it?

The transition process is over. In this case it could be that your account is not available anymore.
I have to quote another forum member who read abour a solution which already worked for some former mobileme users... just try: "Go to System Preferences > iCloud on your Mac and try to sign in with your address, enabling Mail in the checklist. This should set the address up to work with that account. Note that Lion 10.7.2 minimum is required for this (or iOS5)"
I hope it works for you?

  • I want to forget a network, but the "forget this network" option is not available.  What do I need to do to get this option to show?

The "forget this network" option is not available on my iPod touch, can someone tell me what I need to do to have that option show.
    Thanks :-)

You must be connected to the network you wish to forget. If you are, head to Settings -> Wi-fi and click the > next to the network you are currently connected to.  At the top of the next screen is the button to "Forget this Network."

  • I have managed to sync my iPhone 4 to my btyahoo calendar with caldav.  All entries appear on the phone calendar on the correct date, but the time given is always 5 hours later than the (correct) time on the computer. How can I rectify this?

Why do the times for each event or appointment appear on the phone calendar exactly 5 hours later than the correct times entered into the Yahoo calendar on my P.C?  Is there a way of rectifying this, either on the Yahoo calendar site, or on the iPhone?

You got the new iphone?????   I have same problem.  I transferred audiobooks to device to find no audiobooks on device (despite it being in iTunes as if it was).  Have you found a solution?????   I even tried to change import settings on format transfer but hasn't worked.

  • HT6195 Update without sense. About 6 weeks ago I got heaps of ads by using Safari. The update didn't end this. So I got Firefox and the problem is gone. Apple should guess about to help their customers but the reaction is as always "nothing..."

You will see my message up there.
    Thank you.

The Safari 7.0.3 update did not include anything regarding pop ups >  About Safari 7.0.3
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Security tab.
    Select:  Block pop-up windows
If the ads refer to Genieo, then you need to remove malware >  The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide : Genieo
I have block pop-up windows selected and have not had a single pop up.

  • How to execute "netsh wlan connect SSID", but SSID has space and quotation marks?

    Dear all:
I have a wifi roruter with SSID test "3"
But when I execute following command netsh wlan connect "test \"3\""
the netsh reply: 未將設定檔 "test " 指派給指定的介面。
Sorry my windows7 is chinese version, but as you can see, netsh detect my SSID as
    test, not test "3".
Does everybody know how to use netsh to connect to a SSID, and these SSID has space and quotation mark both?
    Regards,
    Joseph

    Hi Joseph,
Firstly, please modify your SSID name to make sure it do not contain spaces or special characters. SSID name is the router setting. please go there to change SSID name.
In addition, If only one SSID is specified in the profile, then the specified SSID is used to connect, and the ssid parameter is not required. If the profile specifies multiple SSIDs, the ssid parameter is required.
Therefore, I would like to suggest you run command as this syntax:
netsh wlan conncet ssid=Your SSID of the unsecured wireless network name=Your current profile name
To do this, please refer to the section “connect” in the following document:
Netsh Commands for Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) Preliminary
