Multiple Target (Backup) Drives

I have an external 1-TB drive I used for more than a year until the power supply died. At the time I needed an immediate backup before extended travel. I used a spare 250 meg external drive and started a new backup series. It has been 3 months and I have finally gotten the Power Supply replaced. (I needed to pull a file from early this year.) I was able to choose the 1-TB drive and retrieved the file. I decided to continue current backups with the original TB drive, but Time Machine does not recognize the drive. Does anyone have a clear understanding of how drives are identified? I can select the old 1-TB drive, but I'm afraid it will wipe the previous backups.
At this point I am tempted to buy a 2 TB drive, clone the recent Backup drive (250 meg) and continue with that drive... (Put the old TB drive in the safe) Anyone have a better plan?
Thanks, Sam

You're on the right track.
Just select the new drive via TM Preferences > Select Disk. Time Machine will not erase the drive. I would strongly recommend, however, that you use different names for the two drives, so you're sure which one is which. (Time Machine keeps track by the UUID so it doesn't really care about the name).
To rename a drive, right-click it in a Finder Sidebar.
Time Machine figures out what to do based on what's on your system, and what it finds on the backup disk you point it to. (That's how you can have separate, independent backups on two different TM drives.)
Normally, it will just do a usual incremental backup of everything that's changed since the last backup +*to that drive.+* If it's been a few days, it may have to do a "deep traversal" to figure out what's changed, which just takes a bit longer in the +Calculating changes+ phase (and if you're on 10.6.3, you'll see "Scanning nnn files" on the TM Preferences panel.)
After 3 months, however, it might do a new, full backup, which means it might have to delete a number of old backups to make enough room.
At this point I am tempted to buy a 2 TB drive, clone the recent Backup drive (250 meg) and continue with that drive... (Put the old TB drive in the safe) Anyone have a better plan?
That will work, too. The one thing you cannot do, is merge the two sets of backups.

  • What is the proper procedure to backup to multiple external hard drives if one wishes to rotate drives such that you may store one in a fire safe?

Description:  If I want to back up to two external hard drives using Time Machine, what is the proper procedure to follow such that I could keep one attached to Time Machine for daily backups, and one that I attach monthly such that I can back it up monthly, and then store it in a fire safe.  To do this, what are the exact steps to follow?
    Research in Progress:
I selected the "?" icon in Time Machine which took me to "Mac Help - Time Machine Preferences" section.  I reviewed this section, including the "Select Backup Disk, Select Disk, Add or Remove Backup Disk."  It says, "If you haven’t set up Time Machine, click Select Backup Disk to set up a backup disk. Repeat the steps for each backup disk you want to set up."  I did add two backup disks.  It goes on to say "If you already set up Time Machine, your backup disks are listed, and information about each backup disk is shown. To select, add, or remove backup disks, click Select Disk or Add or Remove Backup Disk."  Well, what is lacking here is what happens when you "Remove" the backup disk.
As I have read this section, it raises additional questions:
    What are some cautionary statements.
What happens after you remove a backup disk?  Will Time Machine recognize it later?
What is the proper procedure for removing and ejecting one of your external hard drive when you use it with Time Machine?  What happens if you don't "remove" a backup drive and instead just drag it to the "trash can, i.e. eject it" and later reconnect it.?

Time Machine supports multiple backup drives including network area storage volumes (NAS) as well as physically-connected external backup drives.
In , System Preferences, Time Machine, add the second drive by clicking Select Disk.
All available connected drives including connected network drives are displayed.
Select the additional drives, one at a time.
Connected Network drives are displayed on the desktop only when actively being used by Time Machine for backup.
When prompted, select 'use both' when adding the second drive.
Then choose Select or Remove at the bottom of the list of available devices and network volumes to add additional drives.
Time Machine then automatically rotates backups among the available designated devices and volumes.
If the drive is physically not present, Time Machine skips to the next available backup drive.
To DISMOUNT a drive to take it off-site, it is NOT necessary to remove it from the Time Machine preferences.
When the drive is NOT in use, dismount it by Command+clicking that Drive icon on your desktop (or in Finder) and then "Eject".
    That's it.
After 10 days with no backups to a given device, Time Machine does display a message and (as I recall) asks if you want to remove that drive from the rotation.
You can never be too rich or have too many backups!

  • Multiple Computers, one main backup drive?

Can multiple computers backup to one main backup drive?
I have a G5 desktop with a 250-GB drive (Mac OS X) and a 750-GB drive (which used to contain iTunes until I moved it to a new iMac).
So I was planning on using the G5 as the drive for Time Machine to back up to. I have my iMac, and two MacBooks using it.
Is this going to be problematical? Such as when more than one machine attempts to make a backup?

Time Machine can back up multiple computers to the same hard drive.
There are two options... one you can physically move the backup hard-drive around among the computers.
The second option is that you can backup over the network as long as all computers involved are running Leopard. To do this connect the backup drive to your G5. Turn on file sharing on the G5 for that drive. On the other computers connect to the shared drive from the Finder sidebar. The run System Preferences and in the Time Machine Preference pane select "Change Disk" and choose the network backup drive as the destination.

  • Time machine multiple backup drives question

Time machine to backup to my 2TB MyBook drive.  I wanted a second backup on a portable 1TB, so in time machine settings, I selected the 1TB drive, and then clicked the "Replace" button, instead of the "Use both" button.  Currently the 1TB drive is backing up from scratch.
So will I be able to select my 2TB MyBook drive after the 1TB is backed up and disconnected?  I mean, can I resume time machine backups where I left off?
Most of what I've read (after the fact) seems to suggest that I should have clicked the "Use both" button, then just removed the 1TB drive.
    -Thanks

I find tm doesn't remember the drives anyway. I have a dedicated drive for lion and mountain lion as I have both lion and mountain lion installed on  my mac. When I'm in either os and connect the appropriate drive and start tm I still have to go in and select the drive. Tm says there are no older backups, but there are, until the new partial backup completes. Then it lists al the backups on that drive.
Now maybe if you leave tm on all the time it might work differently but I don't care for it creating local snapshots and I only connect the externals when I want to do a backup.
So bottom line is you shouldn't have any problem when you connect the other drive. At that time, when you have to select that original tm backup drive, you can click the option to use both.

Yes you can make multiple backups on one hard drive, for example if you’ve 1TB hard drive installed in your PC and you’ve two Mac Machines with 500GB drive each then you just make two backup images with size of 500GB each.

  • Transferring data from 750GB backup drive to new MacBook Pro with 256 Gb PCI-e flash storage?

Yesterday my late-2008 aluminium unibody MacBook died - absolutely and definitively.  I've tried SMC reset multiple times to no avail.  However, it served me well for almost six years and it's now time to move on.  I've decided to buy a 13 inch MacBook Pro Retina with 256Gb PCI-e flash storage.  Obviously, it will come with Mavericks installed as the operating system.
When it died, my MacBook was running OS X 10.8.5, the original hard drive had been replaced with a Western Digital 750GB, 7200 rpm drive of which I believe about 350GB was used. I keep two x 1Tb Lacie Rugged backup drives, each of which has both Time Machine and SuperDuper Bootable Clone backups.
    My questions are these -
    1.     How should I proceed to transfer my data from my external backup drives to my new MacBook Pro Retina, given the difference in storage capacity of my existing backup drives and my new MacBook Pro?
    2.     I have over 32,000 photos in my iPhoto Library which, obviously, consume a big slab of disk space.  I'm not sure how I go about 'quarantining' the iPhoto Library so that it doesn't use all the flash drive storage.
    3.      One of the Lacie Rugged's has a 'triple interface' - i.e. USB 2, Firewire 400 and Firewire 800.  The other has a USB 2 and 2 x Firewire 800 (IIRC).    The MacBook Pro Retina has two USB 3 ports and two Thunderbolt 2 ports. I want to continue to use the Lacies as my backup drives.  Am I better off to use the USB  ports or should I invest in a Thunderbolt to USB cable?  Does it make any real difference in terms of backing up (which, in my case, doesn't have to be all that speedy).
    4.     What else should I be thinking about? I know I'm bound to have overlooked the most obvious problems but can't think what they may be ...
    Cheers

USB3 is backwards compatible with USB2, so you can use the old USB cables.  For faster data transfer rates, Firewire 800 would be available using this adapter:

Firewire 800 is about twice as fast as USB2, theoretically.

  • Can't upgrade catalog from Elements 8 -thinks photos are on backup drive...

I've just bought LR3 (and upgraded to latest 3.2 release), and now I want to import all my photos from my Elements 5 collection (just over 10,000 photos - mostly RAW). All the photos are actually stored on a network share from my Windows Home Server machine, all accessible as \\home-server\photos\. Elements 5 has no problems with accessing them this way, and I can also access them fine from Lightroom, but I obviously want to retain all my keywording.
As there doesn't appear to be any way to upgrade a PSE5 catalog to LR3, I followed a recommendation I found on this forum (I think), and have downloaded a trial of PSE8. I have successfully upgraded a copy of the PSE5 catalog to PSE8 format, and then view them all in PSE8, so step one is a success. When I launched LR3, it then gave me a new option to upgrade an Elements catalog - this was a step forward. So, I took the option to upgrade the PSE8 catalog to LR, but after attempting it I see a window that says:
"Lightroom has successfully upgraded one Photoshop Elements catalog photo, but was unable to upgrade 10729 additional photos because the photos were moved to inaccessible Photoshop Elements backup drives. If you wish to manage the Photoshop Elements backup photos in Lightroom, please use Lightroom to import images from the following Photoshop Elements backup discs."
The photos are most definitely not on "backup drives". I've never backed up photos from Elements (my backups are done separately from my Home Server). Lightroom can see the relevant shares, as I've imported a few photos directly onto that share from a card reader, and have also imported some photos on there in a "leave in place", but (as they are RAWs) I don't get any keywording this way.
I'd be most grateful for any suggestions, especially as I won't be able to do anything in PSE8 when my trial runs out....

Thanks for that - that certainly agrees with my findings so far.
Do I take it you've had this confirmed by someone from Adobe then? Is it an intended limitation, or just an acknowledged bug?
I really hope it isn't an intended limitation, as it would mean that this high cost professional-targeted app (LR3) is not capable of something that the consumer level one (PSE8) does with ease. Surely it isn't that unusual to store your photos on a network drive.....
If this isn't likely to be fixed soon I guess I'll have to :
Backup (network drive based) photos and catalog
Use PSE8 to move the whole directory tree to internal hard drive
    Upgrade PSE8 catalog in LR3
Use LR3 to move the whole directory tree back to the network drive
Not ideal, but it should get the job done...
Yes, confirmed by Adobe.  It's a design limitation *of the PSE upgrader*.  You can use LR3 to store images on a network drive, you just can't store the catalog there.  I don't expect this to be fixed soon, so I'd go with the workaround if I were you.
I'm not storing my catalog on the network drive though, just my photos. Even with the catalog on an internal drive, LR3 still fails to upgrade any photos that are on a network drive.
I have though now spoken to a helpdesk chap at Adobe, and he has confirmed that Lightroom is not able to upgrade photos on a network drive. Seems like a really poor show to me, but I don't suppose I can do much about it...

  • Best backup drive for college student

Need recommendation for backup drive for college student using MacBook Pro.

    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components: 1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences; and, 2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    Synk Pro
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • Existing Backup Drive re-mounted; now TM creates DMG on my desktop

What am I doing wrong? I decided to unplug my external drive that had been backing up TM for about 2 days. When I re-mounted it, although TM still recognized it as my backup drive, it started a new backup file on my desktop. Clearly I want it to not only recognize my backup drive, but also to continue to create and use the backup history from the same archive. What do I need to do?
    tia.

    webweave,
    Welcome to the Apple discussions!
Generally, as discussed above, having 2 mount points for the same disk in the volumes folder won't prevent a successful backup. But in your case (#15!), that's a problem. More often than not, they are being created by Time Machine because you already have one or more instances of the Time Capsule disk mounted on your desktop. Ejecting the TC disk when it is not needed is the best way to avoid creating multiple mount points.
If you have any further questions, please post them in a new thread. You can refer back to this discussion with a link if necessary.
    Cheers!

  • Multiple TM backups

Is it possible to backup a single computer twice on separate external hard drives?? in other words, performing the same backup on two drives.....just to have two copies of all the info....thanks

    symbianpsion wrote:

Yes and no. You can back up to 2 drives by taking turns, but they won't be the exact same backup. You can change the target Time Machine drive through Time Machine Preferences. Each drive will get a full (takes quite a while) initial backup, and then get its incremental backups whenever it's the current drive. So, if you want to swap drives every day or every few days because you keep one off-site or something like that (I have a friend who, as part of his job, takes one of the two office backup drives home with him every day).
But, keep in mind you do have two copies of everything- the one on your computer and the one on the Time Machine machine drive. The chances of both drives dying at the same time are infinitesimal.

I have a lion server set up to host storage for time machine backups. Is there a limit to how many different computers can back up to the single server to back up. I am only backing up the users folders . The backup drive is an external Drobo with 6 TB. Right now it seems to back up my users all day long. I set their time machine interval to every 5 hours but it still runs all day long and is very slow. Server is on a new Mac Server mini.

AFAIK, there is no user limit.. it is simply a question of the network load. AFP is a fairly clean protocol.. but TM is not.. it does a lot of testing of the backup.. infact your setting of 5hour gap could well make it worse.
I would sort out the clients that are doing 100GB backups to a different backup location.. no matter how fast your network.. 100GB takes time to backup.. and over wireless forever.. it will never end.
I guess some of these clients are on wireless?? I would separate the TM of wireless to those that are wired. No more than 4 or 5 wireless clients to a target device. Otherwise you are saturating your network with backup data. And use 5ghz.. so close by.. it is much faster than 2.4ghz and you will get much better transfer rates.

  • Slow Booting to Macbook Pro Used as Backup Drive

Hi!  I use a 27" imac for my business and have a used MacBook Pro i bought to take with me to conferences and such. I had a brilliant idea to boot the MBP to target disk mode and clone my iMac hard drive (SSD) onto the MBP hard drive.  Then when i boot the MBP, it simply boots to the backup drive.  I can then do what i need to at my conference, and clone the drive back to my iMac.  This actually works really well.  I tried it this past weekend and all went smoothly.
The only problem is that booting and working with the backup drive is painfully SLOW.  I figured that since the drive was internal, it would be basically just as fast as the MBP is when booting to its native drive.  This is not the case.  Is this just inherent to booting to backup drives?  Is there anything i can do to speed it up?  I have 4GB of RAM in the MBP now, and it has a standard HD (not an SSD).  Would upgrading RAM or switching to SSD speed it up any when booting from the backup? Would either speed increase be worth the cost?
Any help you can give would be great.
    Thanks in advance!
    Andy

The problem is the bottleneck of external drive technology.   Only two technologies are as fast or faster than internal SATA.     eSATA drives that are faster, and Thunderbolt.   If the drive you are connecting is on a slower bus, you'll probably see only asynchronous communication and that can slow things down.

  • Time machine backup drive out of space

My time machine backup drive is full. The computer will not back up to it, telling me that the drive is full. I thought the software would start deleting the oldest backups and continue using the drive. Is there a setting that I need to change?

Here you are. It is a lot of data, but I think I have only captured from the start of the last attempted backup to the failure.

This has been happening since then. (Her computer data has the name “Linda” which you will see occasionally.

  • Do i want to use my external hard drive as a backup drive?

i just got a 1TB external hard drive and as i installed it, i was asked if i want to use it or bootcamp as a backup drive. i bought the hard drive to put all my extra video files onto and i don't want to waste any space, but should i use it as a backup drive or should i use bootcamp, which i haven't setup yet (but plan to in the next week or so).

200GB should be plenty, i am only backing up my word documents, and some applications. everything else i have can easily be re-added if i do happen to lose it.
Please reconsider. You're missing one of the major features of Time Machine, not available elsewhere.
Here's what you'll have to do when (not if) your internal HD fails, or some other catastrophe occurs, without a full backup of your entire system:
Install OSX from your Leopard or Snow Leopard Install disc.
Go through the set-up procedure: setup your Internet connection(s), email accounts, etc., including account info, passwords, server names, etc.
Download and install the "combo" update, to get back to your current version of OSX.
If you didn't purchase your Mac with the latest iLife apps, find the disc they're on and restore them.
Find all the discs for 3rd-party apps and install them. Re-enter any purchase keys.
Find the websites for all downloaded 3rd-party apps, download and install them. Re-enter any purchase keys.
    Restore whatever data you saved.
Re-enter all your preferences and settings.
Wonder what you missed, and find out the hard way . . . for months or longer.
However, if you let TM back up your entire system, there's one simple procedure to recover it to the exact state it was in at the time of any backup, even if that's a previous version of OSX. For example, any open Finder windows will reappear in exactly the same locations, with exactly the same contents. See #14 in the FAQ for details.

  • Firewire issue--Backup drive not found w/Time Machine after imac sleeps

I've had a lot of problems with Time Machine on my G4 imac since starting to use it a month ago. I think I have isolated the problem:
Time Machine functions properly while the computer is in use, and it has no problem after a restart or shut down, but if the computer goes to sleep and then TM runs its hourly backup, I get an error that it cannot find the Backup Drive. Once this happens, TM will no longer work until I've deselected the drive in TM, unplugged it, plugged it in again, and reselected the drive as the backup Drive. Sometimes this requires a shut down or restart too.
    Here's what I've tried:
    1. connected the drive via USB--it operated without a problem
    2. unplugged all devices from the computer, shut down, waited, 20 mins, restrted, plugged the external drive back in via Firewire--the problem persists as described above.
    3. deleted the TimeMachine.plist file, restarted--problem persists.
I've read that the Firewire port can be reset with other procedures such as zapping the PRAM or updating the firmware. I've also read that new problems can arise after reseting the PRAM so I'm hesitant to do this. Can anyone shed some light on the PRAM option?
I cannot find where the firmware updates are located on the mac site. Could someone point me in the right direction? I've looked under downloads and after searching, came up with a long list, but nothing was labeled clearly. Each listing mentioned firmware in the header, but it seemed to always pertain to a certain issue (eg. superdrive, or installing appleworks). I could not tell what was the most recent firmware released for my machine, and I fear installing something retrograde that will create new problems.
If anyone has any thoughts on how to deal with the firewire problem, or if you think my issue with using a FW connected drive with Time Machine might be rooted with something else, please comment.
    Thanks!
    HM

It's possible a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app can fix it, but they're expensive (DiskWarrior is about $100), and there's no guarantee it can do it.
Am prompted to reformat but I don't have a good understanding of what this means and how to do it.
That will erase it.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #5.
It sounds very much like the disk is beginning to fail, although it's possible there's a bad port, cable, connection or power supply (if it has its own).
I'd suggest getting a new one, and using it for your Time Machine backups; once you have a good backup there, reformat the old one (and select Security Options to write zeros to the whole drive -- if that fails, you know the drive is toast).  Use it for secondary backups, per FAQ #27.   If it has failed, get a second new one for secondary backups.
