Multiple text blocks in PDF

The PDF I created from InDesign is making 3 text blocks per line! My client needs to edit his menu. Almost every word is a text block. It's only one text block in the InDesign file. I'm using CS6.

Agreed that they seem to be overselling the editing. It has never been easy to edit, but also depends on how the PDF was created. It may be that the creation process you are using from InDesign is the issue, not Acrobat itself. However, I would not look to Acrobat for a lot of editing, other than for minor corrections. Just how are you creating the PDF from InDesign? Are you setting up the parts for the user to change as form fields rather than basic text blocks?
It is typically recommended that all changes be done in the original software and the PDF recreated. Often that might be WORD or LIBREOFFICE for many folks. There are issues that have to be watched even there, but it is really the preferred approach and not to edit the PDF, no matter what the claims that are stated.

1) to be able to set the font face of the destination file ( destFilename)

We didn't say it doesn't work. We said it isn't supported.
There are a number of other ways to make a PDF. The one which would
give the most control is if your application directly printed to GDI,
controlling the font directly. This could print to Adobe PDF.
You could look for an application that gives control of font for
printing.
You could use a text-to-PostScript system and distill the result. You
could even look for a non-Adobe text-to-PDF.
Working in the unsupported and dangerous world you chose, the font
size for text conversion is set (and this is very bad design from
Adobe) in the settings for Create PDF > From Web Page. There is no API
to this.

How do I add multiple text block records from text file?

The data manager documentation (page 151) for MDM 5.5 SP3 indicates that one or more new text blocks can be added to the Text Blocks object table from files. It is noted that the files must be plain text files.
I use notepad and create a text file with two lines as follows:
Test 1
Test 2
When I try to add the text blocks following documentation mentioned above, it only adds one record for the Data Group I have chosen and the record contains the entry "Test 1" from the first line in the text file.
How can I add multiple records to the data group from a file?

From my testing it appears that you need to have one text file per text block record in Data Manager.
I wrote VBA macro to so that I could input my text blocks into an Excel spreadsheet and then the macro will take the contents of each cell in a highlighted column and create one text file per cell.
Then using Data manager, I can select all of the text files at once and it will import them, creating one record per text file.

Multiple text blocks in a Photos page

HI everyone,
I have created a photo page with over 100 photos. I would like to be able to display a paragraph of text followed by a block of photos, then another paragraph of text followed by another block of photos, etc. Ultimately I need 7 blocks of text, each followed by about 20 photos. This is easy to do in Aperture, but I can't seem to make it work in iWeb. Any ideas?

Phil ~ This suggestion is neither elegant or efficient, but anyway...
Create a dummy image of very small file size. Then repeatedly drag that dummy image to the Photos template's photo grid where you want a paragraph of text to appear.
Then cover that block of dummy images with a paragraph of text. In order to obscure the dummy images underneath, you'll need to also set this for the text box:
+Inspector > Graphic tab > Fill > Color Fill+
Alternatively, create a color-filled Shape to cover the dummy images ~ then you'll just need to create a plain (unfilled) text box to place over the Shape.
You'll probably need to make the text box a graphic text box, so that the alignment is not altered when a viewer changes their browser's text size. You can force your text to be a graphic by, for example, in the Inspector, adding an invisible shadow to one of your text's punctuation marks.
Obviously you'll have to repeat the above for each of the seven blocks of text and twenty photos, while making liberal use of iWeb's Arrange menu. But according to this:

You can put up to 500 photos on a Photos page, but the photo grid will be paginated and navigation arrows will appear on the page according to your settings. You can have up to 300 photos on a photo grid without pagination occurring if you set “Photos per page” to 300.

Problem with copying and pasting text blocks in Fireworks CS5

Until recently when I copied and pasted a text block in Fireworks CS5, the block would retain all formatting applied to the copied text block, font, size, color, etc. Now, the pasted block reverts to some default setting. Oddly, if I copy multiple text blocks, the formatting is retained as expected, but not if I copy a single text block. I cannot find a preference that affects this, and I cannot figure out what might have changed. The current behaviour is definitely not desired, and is dramatically affecting my efficiency. Anyone experienced something similar or have any ideas how to correct this? Thanks.

Sure, thanks for replying so quickly. My workflow is simple. My problem is limited to copying and pasting within Fireworks. I typically select an entire block with the main selection arrow but I sometimes use this one too depending on the context. I usually just use the keyboard CTRL-C then CTRL-V to paste. Previously (and I have been using FW for years, it's always been the same) it would paste an identical text block directly over the top of the copied one, and it looked exactly the same, same font, same color, etc. Now, it pastes a new block in the center of the document and all the formatting has reverted to what I guess is the default, in this case Myriad Pro 12pt. The behavior is the same no matter which arrow I use to select the text block. I tried Edit>Copy and Edit>Paste, the effect was the same. The Duplicate function seems to work as desired, but I had never noticed or tried that command before reading your post. Using the keyboard to copy/paste is such an ingrained habit I'd much prefer to continue using it as I always have instead of trying to retrain myself. (I'm old, retraining is hard!)

Most often I copy and paste directly on the canvas, but occasionally will do it within the layers panel. Both now have the same undesired effect. I also tried creating a new document to see if it was a corruption in my current file, but the issue persisted to the new document as well.

In Acrobat XI, how can I select and move multiple text/image blocks simultaneously on the same page?

I work with student-generated PDFs that require all content to be within a specific margin range. Occasionally tables and figures are indented or otherwise spaced incorrectly so that the content violates the margin requirements. In Acrobat X, I could use the select tool to draw a select box around all of the text and lines within a table, for example, and just slide the entire table over a bit to meet the requirements without sending the PDF back to the author for a correction. This didn't always work, but often enough that I was able to use it on a daily basis.
Is there a way to select multiple (but not ALL) text blocks and image pieces on a page, so they may be moved simultaneously? If I have to select every text block and line (or every point and line within a graph) and move them each individually, this is going to be a nightmare.
I have Acrobat XI for both Mac and Windows, but tend to use the Windows version more often.

Hey, I'm using Acrobat XI and I can't multi select like I use too do with shift as always. Now I get a green note every time I want to multi select with shift + click as always. I also use Pitstop and I get the same green notes.

Pages 5.1 (1769) is failing to render text blocks on printing as .pdf, what can I do?

Sometimes all blocks are rendered properly and sometimes text blocks and images are missing. It appears to be random. It's happening when I open a document and when I print documents out to be saved as a pdf.
Has anyone had this problem? How is it solved?

The fact that renderings for print are very different from page display would seem serious. Print is unreliable. Blocks appearing on screen are moved or missing when printed or the document is saved, closed, and then reopened. This occurs at random. Is there anywhere in the Apple world to log a problem? Are others experiencing similar problems? Arrrrrrrgh! I have little enough hair already.

First of all, there is no such thing as Acrobat CS6 or Acrobat CC 2014. We assume you are referring to Acrobat X and Acrobat XI respectively.
Secondly, how are you determining how many text blocks are in the PDF file? By use of the text touchup/edit function in Acrobat? If so, how this edit function displays text doesn't necessarily correspond to the actually underlying text fragments in the PDF file. In fact, sometimes it combines fragments based on heuristics. Those heuristics have varied with different version of Acrobat.
PDF as a file format doesn't know the context of the graphical objects such as text. There is no concept of a line, a sentence, a paragraph, a column, etc. in terms of text. Runs of text are context-insensitive. You will get “breaks” when switching between regular and italics or when unusual paragraph justification is involved.
Is the actual problem in trying to edit the text or something else?
If you post a file, and indicate what text we should look at, we can confirm what is actually going on in your file.

PDF to Word black background in Text blocks

I converted a pdf flyer to Word for editing date and location of an event. Three of the blocks of text that I wasn't going to change looked like they were in text blocks with black backgrounds. I was unable to change the black blocks and had to do a color fill to cover the blocks. It was frustrating and not completely effective. Why did this happen? What is the resolution ? I anticipate converting many such flyers with new dates and times and I do not appreciate this glitch in the conversion process. What is my next step?

Disabling OCR made no difference. Black boxes are still there. Though many of the pieces of the document can be ungrouped, the black boxes cannot - so they remain uneditable.

Prevent words / sentences from breaking apart to multiple type blocks?

When I open an indesign file exported as an eps, or open a pdf in Illustrator; almost aways the sentences or words will become separate type blocks. They will be in the correct position, but be one letter or multiple letter blocks. Is there any way to prevent this from happening?

No.
This is because the PDF or Postscript file format does not support the layout capabilities of Illustrator within one object. Each line of type is a new object, as is anyplace where kerning has taken place, even if that kerning is automatic and build into the typeface.
You can select all the text objects, then paste them into a newly created text frame. You will probably need to add spaces where line endings used to be and returns t the ends of paragraphs.

Multiple photo block issues?

When I put multiple photo "blocks" in an iWeb Photo page, iWeb seems to do two odd things:
1. The slideshow only sees one of the two blocks - can't tell the pattern, whether it is the one on top or on the bottom.
2. When I click on the individual photos the wrong picture comes up.
For example, take a look at my work in progress page. I created it by placing a bunch of photos in the first three rows, and then creating a brand new row at the bottom for the last two photos so they are even and symmetrical instead of along the left side of the page and uneven. When you click on Slideshow, you can't see the last two photos, and when you click on either of the last two photos, instead photos from the top come up.
Anyone know a solution to either of these problems?

IWeb only allows one photo group per photo page.
You can manually edit the photo.html file, to consolidate the two photo groups. But you have to do it every time you re-publish your site.
Open your photo.html in a text edit and search for:
onclick=" startSlideshow('0')
You see the first photo group index is from 0 to 8 and the second group is from 0 to 1. Change the second group to 9 & 10.
As for your slideshow, you have to add the second group pictures into the slideshow.html in your 'UW Arb' folder.

Can I format a paragraph in illustrator, with multiple text sizes?

I have a number of paragraphs in illustrator that have the following...
a title = Arial bold 18 pt.
body text =Arial reg 14 pt.
and indents with bullets
It seems that illustrator only supports one font, size, color, etc. for each Paragraph style. I would like to be able to set the title to Arial bold, 18pt, Blue, and the body text to Arial regular, 14pt, white, with different leadings, within the same style setting. Does anyone know if this can be done?

What are you guys talking about? Since when does InDesign support multiple text attributes for a single Paragraph Style? At least in CS3 InDesign's Paragraph Styles have settings for nested Character Styles and drop caps, but you still define one set of text attributes for the Paragraph Style itself.
In principle it's basically the same in Illustrator. If you want to actually have multiple text treatments in one paragraph, you apply Character Styles to text ranges within the paragraph. Illustrator's implementation of it is pure crap in that inheritance and style redefinition does not work correctly, but the fact remains you certainly can have multiple text treatments in one paragraph, but it is not done with a single Paragraph Style. If using Styles (as you should) it is a matter of nesting Character Styles within paragraphs that have Paragraph Styles applied.
But I strongly suspect that what Mr. Harley is describing is not really a single paragraph at all. He wants different text sizes, different indents, and bullets. That clearly involves multiple paragraphs.
Harley, in part of your description of what you want, you seem to be referring to a single textframe object as a "paragraph." A paragraph is a range of text separated by a carriage return. When you define and apply a Paragraph Style, the carriage return defines the range of the Style. When you define and apply a Character Style, the selected range of characters define the range of the Style. You can use multiple Character Styles within a paragraph that has a Paragraph Style applied.
But you are talking about the need to define several Paragraph Styles to use in one block of text, or "story" (one or several textframe objects). You just need to define three Paragraph Styles:
Heading: Arial Bold 18 pt.
Body: Arial Regular 14 pt.
BodyBullet: Same as Body, but with different indents. Set a tab at the bullet location and at the left indent. (You type your bullet characters; you don't just select "bullets" from a setting.)
Type all your text, using carriage returns as you would expect. Each carriage return marks the beginning of a new paragraph. (This is as true in Illustrator as it is in InDesign, Word, or anything else.) Click inside a paragraph and apply the appropriate Paragraph Style.
Now suppose you want to use a convention within your document that emphasizes certain words or phrases by painting them magenta instead of whatever color is defined in the Paragraph Style. Create a Character Style. Name it Emphasis. In that Style, set the character color to magenta. Now swipe across a word in one of your paragraphs and apply the Emphasis Character Style. The whole paragraph still has the Paragraph Style you applied to it. But now the color of a few characters is overridden by the Character Style you have applied to those characters.
Again, like many things in Illustrator, its implementation of Paragraph Styles and Character Styles is very sloppy compared to other programs. But it is not true that 'InDesign can apply multiple text treatments in a single Paragraph Style, and Illustrator can't.' At least not up to CS3.

Using Javascript to change multiple text field names

I have a pdf with multiple text fields. I need to change all the text field names (General -> Name) so that they are unique so that when I combine multiple pdfs together, the text fields will stay intact. Is there anyway to do this using javascript? Thanks!
