Multiple threads on a Master Page CS3

Hi,
I have defined a master page containing naturally 2 pages left and right.
On each page I have set 3 text frames. Top, Middle and Bottom.
I have threaded the top left to top right, middle to middle and bottom to bottom.
The idea is to AutoFill the top, then the middle then the bottom.
I have Placed a text tile into the top text frame with AutoFill (shift in Windows) and it filled up the top text frame correctly creating some 139 pages.
Back to Page 1.
Tried to select the middle or bottom text frames....nada.
Can't do anything with them. They remain dotted unselected text frames and I cannot select them and Place my middle text and bottom text.
(When I remove the middle and bottom frames on the master page, and define a text frame page 1, I can fill it but without Autofill that would automatically repeat the text frame in the same size and relative position on the following spead pages. I have to manually place text frames page by page with the right size and location and continue filling manually.)
Any ideas? Can I have multiple threads originating on the master page?
Many thanks,
Mickey

I'm not totally sure I understand your question. Are you trying to have text run from top-left to top-right to center-left to center-right to bottom-left to bottom-right before making a new spread, or are you trying to have three separate sets of threaded text? I sense it is the latter, since you seem to want to place multiple pages before coming back to the next set of frames.
Master text frames can be somewhat confusing in how they work, particularly if you are used to other applications where you must have a frame selected to place text. In InDesign you don't need to pre-select a frame for any sort of "Place" operation, and the program will even create one on the fly if required at the point where you click a "loaded" cursor.
Alternately, you can drag a frame with the loaded cursor to your desired size and shape, or, if a frame happens to be available you can use it, including frames on the master page, by moving the loaded cursor over the frame and noting that the cursor itself changes shape to include parentheses. Exactly what happens when you click the loaded cursor depends on what you are placing and the action you take.
Placing a graphical element uses the top-left corner as the reference, so if you click and release the loaded cursor that will become the top left corner of a frame the size and shape require to place the object at 100% scale. Dragging and releasing the cursor will create a frame the size and shape you drag, and the object will be placed within it with the upper left corner in the upper left, and scaled to 100%. If the frame size does not match the object, it will either have empty space or the object will be cropped.
Placing into an existing frame is similar, except you can create a frame in advance with scaling or filling rules applied, or even reflection or rotation, along with any effects you might want to add (putting a frame that's pre-styled in this way onto a master page can be a real timesaver in some situations).
Placing text is a bit different, but similar. If you click and release the loaded cursor, InDesign will create a new text frame with the top edge at the point you click, and the frame will be made to fill the column guides (every page has at least one column that fills the margins) down to the bottom margin guide. Text will fill this frame from the top according to whatever the default frame insets are set to. Default alignment appears not to be honored.
If you click and drag a frame, that frame will be filled, or if you click over an existing frame, that also will be filled, but in this case any vertical justification options that have been applied to the frame will be honored.
My students last year discovered what appears to be an un-documented ripple in placing into an existing frame. If you happen to click the loaded cursor on a guide a new frame will be created using the on-the-fly rules (you can actually see the cursor change back to not having the parentheses as you cross over guides) so I always recommend clicking well inside away from the frame edges or any ruler guides when trying to place content into an existing frame.
Hope that helps.

  • How Do I Globally Edit Multiple Chapter Master Pages In a Book?

I'm working on a new edition of an existing book; the new edition will have a new trim size.  I have 40 or so chapters, and I want to change the master page of all the chapters and part headings of the book.  It's been about five years since I've done anything in FM, so I'm having a hard time figuring out how to change the page and flow size of all the chapters in the book.  Is there a way to do this globally?  Or, to do it to one chapter and copy/paste those master pages to all the other chapters?
    Thanks!
    John
    www.controlgeek.net

See the recent thread (about same issue for Variables).
    Editing multiple chapters at once.
Same technique, just specify only Page Layouts.
And you'll probably want chapter1.fm to be the controlling instance, rather than cover.fm

  • Everytime I copy pages from one ID CS3 doc to another, it re-applies the master page objects!!

    Please Help,
This is a topic I would really like to get to the bottom of.
We have InDesign CS3 templates for creating our reports.
These templates contain around 10 different master pages with grey placeholder image boxes and text boxes with dummy text.
When we copy pages from one ID document to another, all the master page objects that were originally assigned to the pages are re-applied!!
Resulting in lots of grey dummy boxes and text boxes re-appearing on top of the page items!!
It's so annoying because we always customise the pages once we've pulled down master pages to work on, so when we copy pages across to other documents we have to apply the blank master to be able to kick out all the master objects easily.  Then we need to add the page numbers and footers back onto the blank master page.
My question is, is there a way to switch this off, so when I move or copy pages from one document to another, nothing happens relating to master page objects, the pages simply just copy across as they are?
Please help!  If not I may have to ask an external developer to write a script to fix this, it drives 900 of us crazy!
thanks in advance for any help.
Or am I just being ridiculous and not actually realising you can switch this off, doh!

Just a bit of further clarification on this issue (very few people really understand what's going on with master pages and overridden master page items):
When you override a master page item, the object is moved to a local page, but a connection is maintained with the original master page item. This a) allows for the override to be removed (and return the object to its original state). This also, b) allows for changes made to the original master page item (other than the changes made to the local item from the point that it was overridden) to effect the local item as well.
When the connection to the master page item cannot be maintained, the local item gets disconnected totally from the master page, and becomes a regular, run-of-the-mill page item.
In light of this, there's three ways you can end up with duplicate master items:
Reapplying a master page (or applying a new one). When you reapply a master, all overridden master page items get detached from the master, and the original mster page item appears again in its original state. Most of the time this produces unwanted duplication of objects. To fix up your page, you have two options: a) Delete the master page item, and b) copying the contents of the original to the new master page item. The disadvantage of "a" is that you end up with an item which is totally detached from the master, and changing the item on the master will have no effect on the local item. The disadavantage of "b" is that it's a lot of work...
Moving a page to a different document. When you move a page to a different document which has the same master as the one originally applied, the master in the new doc is applied, and the effects are identical to reapplying a master page (i.e. overridden objects are detached). If the applied master (i.e. a master with the same name) does not exist in the new doc, the master is transferred over to the new doc along with the page, and the connections to the master page are preserved (well, re-created actually...). The workarounds in case #1 apply here as well.
When page sides change in a document, the objects on the facing page appears.
What happens here is a bit confusing, but here's an approximate explanation:
When you apply a master to a page or spread in InDesign, what you are actually doing is applying an entire spread to an individual page. You can thing of a master spread as an overlay (or more precisely: underlay) on the page with a window cut out to the exact page dimensions.
When the page side changes that "window cut-out" shifts to show the master spread items which correspond to the position within the spread of your current page (i.e. recto or verso). All objects which exist outside the window shift out of view (but still exist!).
When an object is overridden, the position of the object is defined by its location on the local page, NOT its position on the master spread. When the page then changes sides, the object remains where it was on the page (even though the object it's connected to on the master spread moves out of the window of view). A corresponding object on the facing page of the master (if it exists) will then show in addition to the overridden one.
Now remember: contrary to the first two cases, both objects are based on master ones: one visible one and one invisible one.
Dealing with this third case requires much more care than the first two.
The obvious way to deal with this would be similar to the first two, but if you remove the local object and transfer the content to the new maste object, the invisible master object on the non-visible page was actually removed, so when the page sides change again, the object will now be connected to the now-invisible master page item, and the correct master page item will be gone!
The "correct" way to deal with this would be to transfer the content to the new master page item and remove overrides (not delete!) on the local item (which will make it disappear, because it moves back to the invisible page). Of course, when page sides change again, it becomes necessary to repeat the entire process.
If the local object gets deleted, then your master spread is missing objects with no visible indicator of the fact. This can lead to confusion when the document might be edited at some later point in time.
I believe that this complicated and un-intuitive behavior of master pages is part of the reason people tend to avoid using master page items. Documents tend to get messed up in really odd ways... It's a real shame, because extensive use of master page items has a lot of potential for streamlining workflows and saving an awful lot of time. This behavior really puts a damper on really using master pages as templates.
Getting master page items to work the way they "should" was a big part of what I was trying to accomplish with AutoFlow Pro... When the master page items are defined as such (i.e. given a unique name), AutoFlow Pro solves all three of the above issues by keeping overridden master page items connected to the master page items on the currently applied master (and when a new master is applied as well!).
(When I have a bit of spare time, I think I'll write this up on my blog with some visuals to make this easier to grasp...)

  • How do you apply a master page to multiple documents at the same time?

How do you apply a master page to multiple documents at the same time?

    Hi friends,
Thank you for trying to help me out.
Let me explain it a bit to remove the ambiguity.
I have 10 documents nested under a book. Each of these documents have 'n' number of pages. I want to apply my custom made master page "First" to the first page of all these 10 documents in one go. The remaining pages of the documents have to be in default "Right" master page format. How will I do it?
I tried selecting all the documents and importing the formats from another document with the custom made "First" master page. The master page format is getting imported but the first page of all the documents still remain with the default "Right" master page format.
I think now my question is more clear...

  • How do I populate my date fields placed on Master Page for multiple pages?

I have a dynamic form with flowing fields. I inserted date fields using the Master Pages tab within Adobe LiveCycle Designer ES2, Windows 7 OS. I have only 1 Master Page. Everything on the form is working properly, except when I have multiple pages, the date fields are blank on all but the first page. One of the date fields has javascript in the exit event to calculate the second date field. I can manually edit the subsequent page(s) date fields, but I don't want the end user to have to do that. I want the date fields on the new pages to equal the date fields on the first pages. Below is my output with notes to provide a visualization of what I'm looking for.
Many thanks in advance for anyone who can help me with this issue!
    Caroline

    Hey Mandy,
Yes, both date fields are on the Master Page. The first one is set to "User entered - Required" and the second to "Calculated - User Can Override"
And that's right, I used your script to calculate the second date field. The only thing I changed was the field name, and used 6 days instead since I wanted the calendar days to only run a full week, like start on a Monday and end on Sunday.
    Thx,

  • Import multiple Word docs to multiple pages with same master page?

Hi, I should start by saying I have no scripting experience.  However, I am wondering if there is a simple script available for the following issue:
I have set up a master page with three linked text boxes. Right now, I use Cmd+D to select a word file, and then Shift+click in the first box to place the text on the page. But I have 125 pages that are exactly the same layout, just different Word files to be imported. I could repeat this process 125 times, but I am wondering if there is a way to tell InDesign to create 125 pages using Master Page X and import one file for each?
    I am using InDesign CS5 v 7.0.4 on Mac OSX Snow Leopard v 10.6.7
Thank in advance for any help you can offer,
    NW

I was able to import the word documents as long as there was only one text frame on the master page. However, when I created multiple text frames (the text in the word document needs to flow from frame 1 to frame 2), it always imported into frame 2 and skipped frame 1. In case it is helpful to understand what I mean, I attach two screenshots. The first (sans text) is the master page, and the second is Page 1 after running the script. I added the labels Frame 1 and Frame 2 to Page 1, not the Master, because otherwise the text gets imported into the frame with the words "Frame 2". I suspect I have to label the frames in InDesign and then add something to the script that says insert into the Frame 1, but I'm not sure how to do that.
It wasn't clear from your narrative in June that the text frames were linked, and that the text needed to flow between frames.
The script, as implemented, only overrides one text frame, (textFrames[0],  which is the top-most text frame in the stacking order), and then places the text in it. Clearly that's not correct for your scenario.
You mention 3 frames but only mention flowing between 2 frames.
Anyhow, it sounds like you want the script to override all 3 text frames, and then to place in the first textframe.
The first is easy, the question is really what should happen when there are more than 3 text frames -- should it override all text frames, or only some. You could specify which ones with a Script Label, or you could do something more clever. For the moment, let's just override all text frames.
Then you have to specify which one to place into. You could just select the frame you want and Arrange > Bring To Front. Or we could specify frames[2], which should be the 3rd-from-the-top (after frames[0] and frames[1]). I'll do the latter, but feel free to keep the script the same and do the former:
    var
        d=app.activeDocument,
        p=d.pages,
        i, frames;
    for (i=0; i<p.length; i++) {
        frames = p[i].appliedMaster.textFrames.everyItem().override(p[i]);
        frames[2].place(new File("/path/to/page"+p[i].name+".doc"));

  • Rearrange pages when printing adobe form with multiple master pages

    Hello!
    Good day to you all.
I have an issue in regards with printing my adobe form with multiple Master pages. I have 4 master pages:
    1st master page: a
    2nd master page: b
    3rd master page: c
    4th master page: d
all with different headers and footers all having the same contents (items). I don't have issue with one page content (it just prints 4 pages with different headers and footers). The issue comes out once the items exceed 1 page.
What happens is that the preview/print shows (example: 3-page item)
    a1-a2-a3-b1-b2-b3-c1-c2-c3-d1-d2-d3.
What i need is to print these such that all 1st pages of the 4 master page to be printed first, then all the 2nd pages, then all 3rd pages. Please see below:
    a1-b1-c1-d1-a2-b2-c2-d2-a3-b3-c3-d3
This is because we will be using carbonless copy paper during printing and it's possible that it would be printed on batch jobs. Please suggest ways to do this.
    Thanks a lot in advance!
    Best Regards,
    abap_peer_dangs

    Hi,
Is that requirement of multiple pages as groups only at the time of print or at print preview also...?
Can you have a Print button on this screen or you should be using the Abobe toolbar's Print button..?
Well if this on a click of a button in the form and the requirement is only at the time of print and not on print prieview I can have a JS script which does this...
Let me know if this suffice, I can try with a local file and send you the script.
@ Chris: I didn't understand what do you mean by reported, I was eager to hear and learn a solution from you may be a new approach which I am not aware of ...?
    Cheers,
    Sai.

  • How to set unequal columns using master pages in InDesign CS3?

How to set unequal columns using master pages in InDesign CS3?

I don't have CS3 anymore but I don't think this has substantially changed in the last few versions of InDesign.
Choose View > Grids & Guides > uncheck Lock Column Guides. Then drag the column guides to the position you want.

  • Multiple Master Pages - how to apply to forms?

    Hello!
I need to build a form with two pages, one with portrait orientation and the other one with landscape orientation.
So I created two Master Pagers, one for each, with correspondent orientations.
The first page is ok, following the portrait Master Page definitions. Now I want to apply the landscape Master Page definitions on the second page - I haven't found where to do it.
Please, where do I change this?
Thank you very much for any hints.
    Marcos

    HI Niall,
I'm glad to have found this thread as I have some forms which need 3 Master pages and something is wrong but I can't figure it out.
The 1st Master Page is portrait and will be used for the first two pages of content.
The 2nd Master Page is landscaped and will be used for the third page (or more) content.
The 3rd Master page has 'fixed' Revision History content and just is what it is, and is ALWAYs last on every form we do.
So I was able to get the first two content pages on the first Master page (portrait) and it looks fine.
    So far, so good.
    Now for the problem:
The next "content" page is landscaped, but I cannot put content on it. In fact, if I click on that page, the Master Page is highlighted.
If I delete it, the 2nd Master Page is deleted as well.
    Moving on:
The next page does use the appropriate landscaped Master Page and looks good.
The final page is the Rev history page, as expected.
NOTES: on the difficult page I have tried to use the information you have here but it doesn't work as it appears to be a Master Page.
How does a master page show up in the Design View and not allow content to be placed on it? How can I remove it?
Thanks an awful lot - hope your weather is better than ours!
    Slan!

  • Dynamic form with multiple master pages

I have a 7 pg form that has different data in the footer area. I placed the footer info on it's own separate master page and set the page to the corresponding page numbers. I moved the content area above the footer section so my content can flow to the next page properly. But my problem is since I set the Pagination area to "Place: Top of Page "Page 2" and the rest accordingly, I'm getting an almost blank page with the data from the previous page and the next page pushes to a separate page of its own for every page. Not sure how to make the form flow continuous, this is my first time having to do a form this way. Typically I set the pages when I'm done to "Following Previous" instead of "Top of Next page" in the Pagination Place field for each section and everything works fine then. I've never had to deal with a different master page for each page in the form.
Any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
    Jim

If you have 7 pages with different footers, wouldn't it be easier to have the footer also part of the body page instead of Master page.
Unless you are adding dynamic content at runtime, you can keep the footer in the body page itself. That way you can avoid multiple master pages.
If you still have issues, you can share the form, so I can have a look at it.
    Thanks

  • One Master Page made for multiple files

Can Master Pages be made, to be used in multiple files? If possible, how?

sort of. You can use Move Pages to copy whole master pages between documents, or you can connect the files using the Book function, and then sync Master pages for all documents in the book.

  • CS3 to CS5 Master page issue

Hi, we just got CS5 at work and we're testing the compatibility with our CS3 projects.
Almost everything seems fine aside from this weird problem, i got a master page graphic on master page C that is appearing on a master page B (in the document not in the master page panel). In fact, in every chapter of my book, everytime that Master C is applied on the right page, the left page seems to use that master page too, but its suppose to be B.... and the page panel says B... i can select the graphic, unlock it and delete it... which.. does not seem to be the right thing to do.
is there an option that says that spreads must use the same master pages or something?
In the screenshot below, i'm trying to show the page panel on page 200, that says B, but as you can see, there's a graphic behind my text frame that comes from the page on the right...
    Thanks in advance!

I think the solution for  this is go to page panel and right click on pages and uncheck option 'Allow selected spread to shuffle' (red box), so you now drag the page down (orange box), I think this will solve the problem for now, but if  that happen with a lot of  pages, you will need more time to do that with all pages

hope it is clear and  useful

  • Apply multiple master pages to multiple layers

I have a document that has multiple layer and I need to apply a different master page to each layer.
Layers are as follows and in this order:
         USA Pricing
         No Pricing
         Euro Pricing
         Yen Pricing
         and so on.
I have a master page created for each versions layer. I lock all layers except the USA layer and apply the USA Pricing master to that layer it looks great.
So I lock that layer and unlock the next layer and apply the applicable master to that layer and so on but, even though the other layers are locked what ever master
I last applied is the one that sticks to all layers.
How do you get the master page to stick to each layer without using the Master page override to each layer and making it become part of the page?
If you do that and then you have a change to the Master page on a specific layer/version you have to edit every page and can not simply make a global change on the applicable master!!
Thank you in advance for any help that can be given.

Do you mean that only one master page can be applied per page and that it is automatically applied to all layers of that page?
"so it sounds like you need to create a new master page with the attributes you need for each layer included in one place."
I don't understand what you mean by this? I have created multiple master pages that have everything I need on them to be applied to each layer!
They just don't stick to the individual layer! Maybe it the "included in one place" part of your reply that will work but, I don't understand what you mean by that!

  • JS: CS3-Change text on master pages

    Hello all,
I am new to JS and I really need help. I have spent hours researching, but without much success. I have written code in VB before but I am totally new to JS so please be patient with me. Here is what I want to do.
I publish a monthly trade magazine. Every month when it is time to create the next issue, I open the one that was just completed and do a Save As for the next month. I then go in and delete all the articles and just move around the ads. I have about 20 master pages (left and right combined) and I have to go in and do a find/replace to change the issue date on the top. I don't want to do a Replace All in case it is somewhere else in the document.
For example, I am about to create the April, 2008 issue. The document will be named 2008-04.indd. I will go to the master pages and find 'March, 2008' and replace it with 'April, 2008'. I am thinking I should use Script Labels and name each text frame on each Master Page so I only change those instances.
Any thoughts, suggestions, ideas...? Any help would be appreciated. Just remember to talk to me like you are dealing with a 5 year old. Scripting with JS in ID is totally new to me.
    TIA,
    Nancy

You don't need a script. All you need is a couple of text variables, one with the month, the other with the year. Each month you just change the value of these two variables.

Depending on your needs, you might be able to loop through all the docs
in the book, and apply the A Master a to all blank pages.
That would be an option. But is it not possible to insert a master page instead of a blank page while updating a book?
