Multiple usb interface devices in Garageband

Here is the question.
we are a church trying to utilize an H4n recording device to tape all services.
This can go onto an sd card then copied over and edited in Garageband. What we wish to do is utilize the H4n to record directly to Garageband but it only uses the two channels to do so once USB is setup for it. What we would like to to perhaps use 2 devices connected to the macbook via a usb hub, this would in theory give us the option of recording via built in mics on H4n on one and channels 1&2 on the other.
Is this feasible or should we use atmoshpere mics connected via the soundboard and go that route??
Regards and thanks

  • Errors when using multiple USB-8473 devices

    I am trying to put together an application that uses five USB-8473 devices simultaneously on one PC. I can't seem to get more than two of them running without getting error -1074388956 (object handle invalid). Any two of them will run together, but when I go from two devices to three, I get the error every time. I have gone through and made sure that the object handles I am providing to ncReadNetMult are the same ones generated by ncOpen. Is there some limit to the number of these devices that can be run at the same time on one PC?
    It is not a USB issue (though they are all on the same powered hub) because I am only writing 4 frames/sec on each device and get the same issue without any modules attached.
    I need to run five at a time so I can talk to five modules with the same address at the same time.

    Marcus,
    Can you please clarify your comments regarding the USB hub? Specifically why you believe the hub is not part of the issue? I looked into the spec for the USB 8473 and these devices are rated at 250mA and 5VDC per module. Can you please check the rating of your hub? If you are trying to run 5 modules simultaneously, you will need the hub to output 1250mA to power all 5 modules. One of the common current output ratings is 500mA per hub - thus your ability to run only 2 modules.
    One way to eliminate the hub as the root cause is to try to connect multiple modules directly to your computer. I checked on my system and found that each of my 7 USB ports is rated at 500mA each. To check on your computer simply go to the Device Manager and expand USB Controllers. This will let you know how many internal "hubs" are on your system. When you right click on a hub, select "Properties", and click the "Power" tab, you will see the current rating of the ports assigned to that internal hub. If you have 3 (or more) available ports that meet the power requirements, then you should be able to test with three (or more) modules to see if the issue is present without the external powered hub.
    To me it sounds as though your hardware requires more current than the hub can supply.

  • Recently I've been getting repeating static noise through USB connected devices in GarageBand

    I've been using GarageBand for recording for the past year.  Only recently have I encountered an issue with the use of ANY usb connected device.  I'm using a Macbook Pro Retina 15" and the connected devices I've encountered the issue with are a Blue Snowball Mic, M-Audio Axiom 49 Midi Controller, and guitars plugged in via a Rocksmith Cable... pretty much any time I record through USB I get a repeating static noise approximately every 35 seconds that lasts for 2-3 seconds.  The noise is very prevalent and sounds very much like what cell signal noise sounds like.  I tested putting my iPhone into Airplane mode hoping that would solve the issue but to no avail.
    I've been using this same exact setup for over a year and only in the last month has there been any problem like this.
    Anyone else seeing this problem and does anyone know of a solution... it's pretty much rendered GarageBand useless for recording at this point for me.

    Fixed my own problem... if anyone else has this issue and sees this all I had to do was update to ML 10.8.3 and it took care of what ever bug was in the system.

  • Cant hear song playback while recording with external USB Interface Mic in Garageband

    Hi there
    There must be something wrong with my settings in Gargaeband/Mac Sound Settings.
    I have Garageband 9 (V5.1) running a song I have already recorded using a USB keyboard.
    I want to record using my external mic and my USB Audio Interface, so
    I select New Track> Real Instrument
    I plug in my Yamaha Audiogram 3 USB AUdio Interface and I get a pop up stating
    "Garageband is scanning your system for audio devices, and has detected a device named "USB Audio Codec"
    If you want to use this device do not disconnect it during the scanning process.
    Do you want to use this devise No/Yes."
    I select Yes and INPUT SOURCE changes from
    Mono 1 (Built-in Microphone)
    to
    Mono 1 (USB Audio CODEC)
    I can see the signal lights lighting up on the audiogram 3 when I talk into the mic, so theres no problem there.
    Also when I hit record I can record audio using the mic, and can see the levels (and the audio wave I am creating being drawn on the screen) but I cannot hear the track itself when I am recording using the mic. Nor can I hear the track or the new mic recorded audio AFTER I have hit stop.
    The only way to hear the song again with the newly recorded mic track is to unplug the Audiogram 3 (Then I get another Pop-up stating
    "The audio device "USB Audio CODEC" has been disconnected!
    Do you want to switch to Built-in Audio or quit Garageband?"
    I select USE BUILT-IN AUDIO)
    Then the input source changes back to
    Mono 1 (Built-in Microphone)
    And I can hear the track again.
    So my problem as you can see if that I cant hear the track while recording using the microphone with the Audiogram 3.
    But I can record video with audio using the audiogram 3 USB Audio Inteface and mic using photobooth when I select change Sound>Input to USB Audio Codec in system preferences
    It therefore assume it must be a problem with the internal audio settings of the mac/garageband.
    Can anyone advise?
    thanks!

    In order to hear yourself while you are recording, you need to set Monitor to "ON" under the Track Info panel.
    Also, what are your sound output settings?  It sounds like you haven't selected the right output source.
    If your speakers or headphones are plugged into your audio interface, then you need to go into Preferences -> Audio/MIDI and select your audio interface under Output as well as Input.  If your speakers or headphones are built-in or plugged directly into your computer, then you need to select Built-In under Output.
    I have a sneaky feeling that you are in the latter scenario, and that when you plug in your audio interface Garageband is automatically switching both Input and Output over to your interface, which means no sound output as long as the interface is plugged in.

  • USB output devices and GarageBand 08

    I have seen several posts discussing that Garage Band 08 does not use the USB Companion 5 speakers as an output. Does anyone know if there is a way to get Garage Band to use USB as an output? Additionally does anyone know if Apple has any plans to support USB output? I have some expensive speakers going to waste with Garage Band.

    Not from what I have seen in the threads and throught my own personal experience. My Itunes plays great through the Bose Speakers. In Garage Band if I choose Built in as the Audio Output Channel...no probs...if I change it to USB Bose or Match Systems settings which are also USB....Garage band hangs and I get the rainbow wheel of death when I do anything.

  • Multiple usb mics?

    i'm looking to do some home recording and i was wondering if anyone knows if garageband 3 will support multiple usb audio devices? ideally, i'd like to plug in two samson usb condenser mics and record simultaneous vocal and acoustic guitar tracks.
    keep in mind these will be plugged in directly -- i know there are some issues with hubs, so i'll avoid that route . . .
    thanks!

    You can do that, all you have to do is create an "aggragate device" in the Audio/Midi utility and pick that as the audio source in GB. It will have two channels (the two mics) that you can assign to tracks.

  • Problems with creating a USB boot device for Windows 8.1

    My iMac (late 2012) running OSX Mavericks is encountering problems creating a Windows 8.1 install disk via a USB thumbdrive. The drive has 8gb of space available, which is enough to fit windows. But when I choose my ISO image and select the drive I recieve an error message. The error is 'Bootcamp only supports 64-bit Windows installation on this platform. Please use a ISO file for 64-bit Windows installation.
    I'm certain this ISO definately contains 64-bit, so I'm slightly confused.
    I've followed instructions found in other discussions talking about adding an extra line of information to 'info.plist' found inside the Package Contents for bootcamp, but that has also not worked. If I try that, Bootcamp crashes upon being clicked every time.
    Any help is appreciated

    First up: a question. How did you fix the crashing Bootcamp Utility? It would help out this guy: https://discussions.apple.com/message/23523783?ac_cid=tw123456#23523783
    Next up: A possible solution (also posted here:https://discussions.apple.com/message/23523783?ac_cid=tw123456#23523783)
    =====================
    It's possible you have a Windows ISO for both 32- and 64-bit. In this case it's probably detecting the presence of the 32-bit installer and forgets to look for another 64-bit version.
    A way to work around this is to not use the Bootcamp Assistant utility by following the listed steps:
    The way installing Windows should work either way using the Legacy BIOS mode:
    - Get a Windows ISO or DVD and copy the contents over to a freshly fat32 formatted USB stick of at least 4GB.
    - Download the Apple Bootcamp Support Software (4.x or 5.x, 5.x only supports 64-bit, get that if you are going 64-bit);
    - Copy the content of the Support Software folder over the the same USB stick from the first step. It should fit just right (it did on my 4GB stick with 2MB te spare!);
    - Use disk utility to partition your disk. Make sure the partition for Windows is Fat32 and at least 30GB;
    - Reboot your machine while holding Option/Alt at the chime;
    - You should be able to select either your OSX HDD or your USB stick labeled "Windows" -> Select Windows and press enter or click the arrow;
    - The Windows installer should now load, format the previously made Windows partition to NTFS;
    - Continue on your way.
    Can you try what I typed above? If it doesn't work, can you let me know at what step things go differently than described?
    Edit: This is based on the logical conclusion that any Mac that was shipped without ODD should be able to boot from USB.
    Edit2:
    One other note is that Mac's have trouble booting from USB when multiple USB storage devices are attached. So make sure you connect only one storage device.

    Best of luck to you!

  • Software needed for the USB device, "USB Interface Controller TEST2.0"

    My mother recently acquired a digital camera. She acquired it from a second-hand store, which did not include an interface cable or software. The manual (and the USB port on the camera) indicates that a male-male USB cable is necessary for photos to be copied to the hard drive.
    I was not successful in locating such a cable at any local electronics store (I assume such a cable is now out-of-date). I purchased one from a seller on eBay. The brand is "e circuit electronics".
    Upon powering up the camera with the cable connected to it and the computer, the following message appeared:
    "Software needed for the USB device "USB Interface Controller TEST2.0" is not available. Would you like to look for the software on the Internet?"
    I clicked "Yes". After an approximate two-minute wait, another message appeared stating:
    "Software Update is not able to connect to the Internet. Please check your configuration and try again."
    I deleted, "Software Update Preferences" in the Preferences folder inside the System Folder, without solving the problem. How do I solve the issue of allowing Software Update to connect to the Internet?

    Thank you for your continued assistance, BDAqua. Unfortunately, the driver you linked to does not seem to be compatible with the camera. It is a driver for the V20 model, whereas my model would correspond to be a V2755, as referenced from a list of other Vivicam models when during a search at the Open Drivers web site.
    From the system requirement about the card reader you gave me, it will not work, as this system is running 9.1. I am hesistant to upgrade this computer to 9.2, as I have experienced system unstability with that version, with even the 9.2.2 update applied.
    In the mean time, I have e-mailed Vivitar regarding this issue, but have as of yet received a reply.
    I am not certain as to other specifics to give you, in order to solve the Software Update problem. Please elaborate.
    Yes eww, the computer in question is able to fully connect to the Internet for all that I need. I am fully aware of the difference between a computer connecting to the Internet, and a computer connecting to a digital camera. I have 15 years of Macintosh experience.

    Hi fellow gurus,
    Trying to pass-through two USB devices. One works just fine, but two produces an error.
    They are the same type from the same vendor and libvirt seems to have no way to differentiate between the two, as it only uses the <vendor id='0xnnnn'/> & <product id='0xnnn'/> strings and not serial number of the device.

    As I understand it, host:bus.addr is an alternative to host:vendor_id:product_id. So if I wanted to pass both of these thumb drives:
    $ lsusb
    Bus 001 Device 002: ID 1e3d:2093 Chipsbank Microelectronics Co., Ltd CBM209x Flash Drive (OEM)
    Bus 001 Device 003: ID 1e3d:2093 Chipsbank Microelectronics Co., Ltd CBM209x Flash Drive (OEM)
    I would use host:001.002 and host:001.003 . Note I said would use, because I've never tried it.
    And usb_add is a qemu monitor command. See sections 3.4 and 3.5 of the doc you linked for info on the monitor.
    All this being said, I don't use libvirt stuff so I don't know if it has the capability to specify USB devices by bus.addr or whether or not it enables the monitor.

    I am buying an audio interface with Firewire output, would I feed this into Firewire,USB or Thunderbolt for Garageband?

    I don't have a H4 but do have a H2. Did you set the H4 as a audio interface, after you plug it in choose interface in the H4 screen?
    Did you choose the H4 input channel in the track info?

    Is it possible, to add multiple USB devices using a hub to Time Capsule (as stated for Airport Extreme)?

    The Time Capsule is an AirPort Extreme with a built-in hard drive, so you can add multiple USB devices if you use a powered USB hub.

  • USB port issues, interface devices "unmounting"

    I've had this problem pretty much since day one. Anytime the display goes to sleep on the intel iMac, the keyboard and mouse freeze up. If it goes into a screensaver, there seems to be about a 20-25% chance of this occuring as well. Reconnecting them solves it, but that is entirely inconvenient.
    At Apple's suggestion, I tried connecting them into different ports, not the mouse into the keyboard. This had limited sucess, it still always caused the problem on display sleep, though the screen saver seemed to work okay 90+% of the time after doing this.
    Aftwards, I have put Windows XP and Linux onto the machine - they both suffer the exact same problem during display sleep and screen savers. I'm convinced at this point it is definitely a hardware issue. The only two USB devices are the mouse and keyboard, there are no firewire devices connected.
    Additionally, I have since connected the keyboard and mouse now into a self powered USB hub. The problem persists, though at least I can just flip the hub on and off to reset the devices immediately, rather than having to swap around any of the cables.
    I've seen a few other topics regarding this on the forum, but most seem to be corrected by Apple's suggestion of not daisying the interface devices, but mine remains.
    One additional note, this problem has never happened while I was doing something on the machine, or just left it idle in a few power usage mode.
    iMac Intel Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    an amend to the previous, it does seem to occur if I leave it purely idle for long periods of time with no powermanagement on, it just doesn't fail if I'm actually using it.

  • Aggregate Device doesn't recognize my Tascam US144 USB-interface

    Hi! I hope this is the right category to post in...
    Well, I would like to create an aggregate device with my Tascam US144 USB-interface as input and the built-in MacbookPro-speakers.
    The problem:
    When I open the "Create Aggregate Device"-dialog and create a new device it doesn't list my US144, so I can't include it into my aggregate device.
    It would be really awesome if you could help out.

    I am having the same issue.
    Ive called Tascam, the phone tech claimed they are unaware of this issue and told me to talk to Apple.
    Ive called Apple and they believe it is in the driver support of Tascam - which I particularly believe more.
    Has anyone found the answer to this?
    I was trying out a M-Audio interface hardware yesterday that was showing up in the aggregate device list with the USB icon (US144 does not).
    Was anybody able to use the Soundflower option to map the inputs from US144 to the Apple Default In?
    I advocate a call campaign to TASCAM to get their software engineers working on a support for this!!
