Multiple use of internet cable (Pro Mac – Laptop)

Hello,
I'm working from home with a Pro Mac (Early 2008) and have a broadband internet connection with a Motorola SB100 SURFboard cable modem.
My wife who works with a Macbook Pro laptop (3 years old) would like to have internet access at home as well. So we both need to be able to share the cable.
The cable companies web site requires:
(1) 10Base - T multiport Ethernet Hub
Category 5 Cable and RJ45 Jacks
10 Base-T Ethernet card
But when I called the company I got told I don't need a hub, but a router.
Now I'm a bit confused what to buy. Any suggestions which models would work for both (tower and laptop) Macs. Do we need both, a hub and a router?
Also, I don't think I would need a new Ethernet card, but to be honest I don't know what a 10 base-T card is. My wife doesn't have a Ethernet card on her Laptop. Which model would work for her?
Thanks so much for your help!

Hi
That cable company literature seems pretty outdated to me!
Actually, right now, if you wanted, you could connect the Macbook Pro to the second ethernet port on your Mac Pro and share the internet directly from there. But I suspect you'd prefer a more flexible solution. So yes, you need a router. What about wireless - would you appreciate being able to connect to the internet from the Macbook anywhere in your house? Check out any inexpensive 802.11g wireless router, such as a Linksys (eg WRT54G) or D-Link (eg WBR-1310) model. You'll have the Mac Pro wired from the router, and the Macbook Pro will be wireless.
Note that I recommend a "802.11g" router - there's a newer, faster wireless system called 802.11n, but if your laptop is three years old, I don't think it will be supported.
Post back if you need any more details or specific router recommendations!
Matt

Yes, if the AirPort Express is set up to create a wireless network that uses the exact same wireless network name as the other router and the same wireless network password as the other router.

    Hi
I can understand you very well. For me its a shock if 90 IE windows would appear on my little notebook screen. SCREAM !!! :O
However, did you install any 3rd party applications which could open the windows?
I think this is not a normal system state and if it appears since view days so you should try to roll back the OS to the early point.
Furthermore you could try to check in the MSCONFIG what background processes runs on the OS. If there are some very strange processes you should disable it and you should remove it from the autorun.

  • Why can't I use the Internet on my Mac?

I need help. My MacBook Pro as recently stopped using the Internet.
I went to a hotel to stay the night, and I tried connecting to their Internet on Mozilla, and it just keeps loading and loading and loading. So I tried Minecraft, and it kept loading and loading and loading and eventually it said,  "could not connect".
I am now at my grandmother's home and it is doing the same thing. I tried Opera, and it still didn't work. I finally tried Safari and it still just loaded.
I tried to perform a software update, I though it would help, but I need Internet for that too.
I could really use some help here. Please let me know.
I am going to Apple on Monday if we can't fix it.
    Help me please.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Using the data cable with Mac OS 10.5.4

Is it possible to use the data cable to connect my Nokia N70 to Mac OS X Leopard? I want to use it as a GPRS modem, and can do so via bluetooth, but get very slow speeds. Therefore, I'd like to try using the data cable.
There isn't a Mac version of PC Suite (Mac Suite?!), is there?
    Thanks in advance.

no, there's no Mac Suite product. however, i'd consider that a good thing since my fiancé's PC Suite has YET to be able to connect her to the internet via USB or Bluetooth (!@#$'ing windows). she's got an N82 and windows vista home [adjectives ad infinium] and the latest N-series pc suite.
for her, we had to switch to WalkingHotSpot. that and JoikuSpot are essentially the same product. while this isn't an option on the N70 (no wifi), i thought i'd at least point out that PC Suite on windows doesn't seem to work well either.
now, about that USB connectivity: yes, i would think it SHOULD work. i'll try settin up my n95 in this manner (though i use WalkingHotSpot or bluetooth modem as needed)
what version of macos are you running?

    N95-1 ---> N97-NAM ---> N900 ---> E7-00 + N900 (I use them both)
(N95 was pretty good, N97 had potential but utterly failed to deliver, N900 is absurdly good. Those of you wondering, "should I try N900/Maemo/MeeGo"? The answer is a resounding YES)

  • Connecting To Internet On A Mac Laptop

    Hello,
I have a BEFW11S4 Ver. 4 Router, On a Windows XP desktop. I am trying to get internet connection on my MAC laptop. Ive put
the network and WEP password into my laptop but it doesnt connect. No matter what. I called linkseys and they told me that
i needed to change some settings but they couldnt help me because my warranty was expired. Please can somebody help me with my issue.
    Thank you,
    Andrea

As the Wireless Security on your Router is set to WEP. So whenever you Connect to the MAC computer with WEP security you need to Input the "$" before the security key (Eg: $1234567890), when prompted for the WEP Password... and then you need to click on Join... This will make your MAC Computer Connect to your Wireless Network...

  • Has anyone ever used an invisibleShield on a Mac laptop?

I have just ordered a White Macbook and am concerned about the yellow discoloration issue. I was thinking of ordering an invisibleShield from www.shieldzone.com and I wondered if anyone had any experience with the product? They just released the 13" Macbook shield in the last day or so.

are you sure heating cause discolorization? I doubt it because iBook has the same materials on surface as well. even macbook heating get more than iBook, it's not too much higher to damage the surface.
by the way, as far as you keep vent clear, invidisible shield will be fine. I just visited that site. there are three options they sell. but I don't recommend that you buy bottom shield. for top plate where Apple logo is glow, and touchpad, palm rest, it will be fine. I also consider to get one, too.

  • Can I call a mac laptop using my iPhone 5? For free?

I'm away on holiday soon and want to use FaceTime to call a mac laptop. How do I do this? And is it free?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Without any problem. To be able to call a Mac, this computer must have the FaceTime app, included with OS X Lion and Mountain Lion, and available for Snow Leopard in the Mac App Store.
Calls work in the same way as you do to call to other iPhones, iPods touch and iPads with FaceTime, but select an email address instead of a phone number (I'm not sure if you can use a phone number to call to a Mac with OS X Mountain Lion). FaceTime is completely free, unless you aren't connected to a Wi-Fi network on the iPhone; in this case, you may be calling using your carrier's network, and you may have to pay

  • Trying to use Wireless-G Router w/ Mac OSx (WRT54G2)

    Hi,
I just got a Linksys Wireless-G Router, to use with my Apple MacBook laptop. I got the laptop new back in January '08, and the router is new as of today. The Model Number is: WRT54G2.
I have a Windows desktop PC that I have been using at home, it has a cable modem connection through my cable company (external modem).
When I tried putting in the installation CD for the router today into my Mac, it didn't show up (the CD did, but the programs wouldn't start). I came to the Linksys website, and saw that the Wireless-G Router's CD only works on Windows (I have Windows XP on this desktop I'm using right now for Internet.) But, of course, the laptop that I want to use the wireless connection with, is a Mac.
I don't currently use the Internet on my Mac at home (only at places like the library with free WiFi access).... so I don't currently have my Mac plugged into any kind of modem whatsoever right now.
The help wizard on the website is so confusing. I am just wondering....how on earth can I possibly get my Mac laptop using the Linksys Wireless-G router system?? Where do I plug the blue ethernet cable into, etc.? I can't use the Installation CD on my Mac, so it says manual installation is required, but I dont know what to do.
I would reallly appreciate anyone's help! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Access the setup page of the router by launching an
Browser and type on the address bar, 192.168.1.1 and press enter. When
it prompts for the username and password, leave the username field
empty and provide password as "admin" (Without quotes)
    click on ok.
On the main setup page the ""Internet Connection Type"" should be
on ""Obtain IP Automatically - DHCP “. Click on the Save Settings
    button.
Now click on the sub tab ""MAC address clone"".
    - Click on enable
Click Clone & click save settings
Check WAN Ip on Status page of router ....
If getting Valid Ip .... try going online
If not ... power cycle for 4-5 minutes & then again check the WAN Ip address .....

  • Plugging my guitar into my interface, i have huge latency problem en gb 08, mac laptop os5.8

please help, when I plug my guitar directly into my  tascam us 144 interface the latency problem makes it  almost impossible to record a decent track. I am using  GB 08 on a mac laptop with  OS 5.8

You can, with the right sort of connector, physically plug a lead from your guitar directly into the MacBook. The problem, as I understand it, is that the signal produced by your guitar (Hi-Z) is not what your MacBook's input jack is designed for (line level). You need something like a direct box or an effects unit that will boost the guitar signal to line level (depending on the make/model, even some stompboxes may do this) or a cheapo audio interface that provides at least a Hi-Z input for your guitar and a line-level output from which to run a cable to your MacBook's line-level input; you can also plug your guitar into something like the M-Audio Jamlab which goes into your MacBook via USB.
    Cheers,
    Carl

  • What is the correct installation sequence for my ATI Radeon 9800 PRO MAC AGP 128MB into my Quicksilver 867 G4?

    Hi.
I just got my used ATI Radeon 9800 PRO MAC AGP 128MB card.
What is the correct installation sequence into my Quicksilver 867 G4 running 10.4.11 on one drive 10.5 on another?
The original NVIDIA GeForce2 MX - 32MB SDRAM went bust.
Is the driver build in 10.4?
Do I remove the old driver?
If I need to install the driver that came with it, (10.3.6) should the card be installed first?
    What about firmware updates?
Thank you for all your time and patience.

Instead of getting a wireless card for the Mac Pro, you might want to consider getting an 802.11ac wireless bridge device that would enable you to connect more than one device to it by Ethernet cable and to eventually take advantage of the faster 802.11ac wireless standard.
