Multiple Users, 1 iMac, 1 iPhone

Is there a tutorial which explains how OS X handles multiple users/accounts on the same physical machine with regard in particular to iPhoto, AddressBook, iTunes, other "built-in" apps?
Now that my wife has an iPhone, it seems her user account has "taken over".
Mobile Me has not made it any easier. Does Sync work on a user by user basis, or on an overall-machine approach?
Any help/direction appreciated.

Every account has it's own space, so to speak.
Look in the MacHD/Users folder - you will see a subfolder for each user on the machine.
Each users folder contains folders for documents, prefs, libraries, mail files, internet favorites, browser extensions, etc. They are entirely self contained; users folders do not 'combine'
Other users cannot access any other users sub folders in
/users/username/~
Each user can elect to share (or not) all or part of their respective iphoto and itunes libraries to other local users.
Documents that a user wants to make available (as read only) to other users on the machine can be placed in MacHD/Users/Shared.
Now, if for some reason, your wife logs in under your account id, then connects/syncs her iphone, it will cause issues, especially when she logs back in under her account and connects and syncs the phone.

  • Multiple users on imac

I have a new iMac and I'm thinking through user accounts.  I don't want to have separate user accounts if I can avoid it, and I'd rather not have separate iTunes accounts either.  But if we have one big iTunes account, can we designate different apps to go on our different devices?  I will have two iPhones and one iPad working through the same account.  But my daughter and I will have different music and different apps on our phones.  I've never tried to use one iTunes account for multiple users before so I'm not sure if that's even possible! Thoughts...?

You can auto sync whatever you select to each device.
Only way is to manually sync

  • Can multiple users on iMac running Yosemite access features, i.e., iPhone calls, using individual apple id's?

We have a iMac that is used by 3 different people, each with a separate log-in. Under Yosemite, can the individual users access the new features of Yosemite, i.e., iPhone access,  using their individual Apple ID's?
If yes, how? What does the sytem administrator need to do to give each user access to the features when they log-in?
If not, then what the heck, Apple?

Thanks for your response. I want to make sure I understand this . When installing Yosemite, it requires the apple id.  This would be the apple ID of the admin doing the install. If admin enters their Apple ID, then the functions related to their Apple ID will be the default. User B logs in. What  does he do to  set up his Apple ID to synch functions between his iPhone and the OS? I understand that if he has admin privileges, based on his account profile, his settings should not override the previous admin set up because they are separate accounts, so it is just how the other two users activate the new Yosemite features that I'm unsure about. Will this work for all new features including iCloud drive?

  • Iphoto install multiple users on imac

I bought thelatest version of Iphoto for our Imac at home, but I cannot get it on the other accounts without needing to buy an install for each account.
Is there a way of installing iPhoto on each user account?

If it's installed by the Administrator of the Mac then it's on all the accounts.

  • IMac with multiple user accounts "cannot associate apple id for ....."

I have an iMac with multiple user accounts each with an Apple ID and individual iTunes library and Itunes match linking to iPhones iPads etc.
I bought songs on my iPhone yesterday, on trying to listen to them on the iMac (my user account) this morning I get the "cannot associacte Apple ID for another 31 day" meassage.
Is there any way round this? or is the answer only purchase via iTunes on the iMac in the individual account. Why do Apple do this?

I'm guessing it's for piracy reasons.

I'm assuming you have the lastet OSX version 10.9 "Mavericks." Here are some useful links from Apple I think will help:

I suspect you have a newer iMac than the pre-2006 models this forum covers (the forum labels are unbelieveably vague). If you can confirm that yours is newer than 2005, I can ask the Hosts to move you the the forum for current iMacs, which gets many more views.

  • Hello,  I have iMac from Oct, 2010 and have OS 10.6.7 and multiple users.  Mail icon was accidently removed along with program.  Mail 4.4 is on other users but when I reloaded software my user got Mail 4.3. Mail 4.3 did not work with latest OS. Ideas?Matt

Hello,  I have iMac Itel i3, from Oct, 2010 and have OS 10.6.7 and multiple users.
About 3-4 days ago the Mail icon in dock had question mark and was accidently removed, along with program on my user.  Oops.
    1. Mail 4.4 is on other users and works fine, but for me it does not work and tells me V4.3 does not work with latest OS X.
    2. I reloaded software from my user with original disks  (Oct, 2010) and got Mail 4.3 again. Mail 4.3 did not work with latest OS.  I am unable to load Mail.  Gives Yellow error message.
"  You have Mail version 4.3 (1081/1084). It can’t be used on Mac OS X Version 10.6.7 (Build 10J869). For more information, click the Help button."
    3. Tried to update software and look for update for mail 4.3 on Apple site to no success.
Hate to go to MS-Entorage ( I may need to learn something new and alien) mail program since contracts are in Mail/Address Book.
    Ideas?

    Matt,
I would download and run the 10.6.7 combo update.

You need to create a user account for your wife (or yourself depending on who has the current user account). When syncing, each of you should sign in as a separate user, login to iTunes and then sync. I had this problem when my sister got an iPhone. When we did her initial sync, everything on my iPhone showed up on hers. Apple gave me this solution.

  • How can I sync Iphone to a PC calendar then have multiple users share that calendar? Is there an application that does that?

How can I sync Iphone to a PC calendar then have multiple users share that calendar? Is there an application that does that?

If it is actually an exchange calendar, and it's not linked to a specific user, it should be possible to simply add the exchange account to each device in question and have that exchange account only sync the calendar.  Then every user has access to the same calendar and can add/edit entries to the calendar as needed.
The same would apply if it were a Google calendar added via Exchange.
If the calendar is not actually on Exchange, but rather added from an outside source, it will depend on that outside source where the calendar originates.

  • Multiple users, and two ipods on one Imac g5

I have an Imac g5 with 2 gigs of ram have multiple users and two Ipods, I have looked through the discussions pages about this but still cannot make the music in my account show up in my daughters account also I cannot get her ipod to work on her account. Help me please I have tried the fast switching, and dragging from the home directory. I know it must be something that I have done wrong. I think I must need very specific directions that are more inclusive than what I have used thus far. Ipod video 30 gig is my daughters and the new Ipod shuffle 1gig is mine.

What do you mean by synchronize; music, apps, calendars, email, etc? Do you two share the same Apple ID on all devices? An Apple ID can support up to 5 computers and many iDevices.
    I hope this helps.

  • Sharing music w/ multiple users on same iMac

I have four accounts on an iMac and want to provide access to the iTunes library on an external hard drive for each user. Can you tell me how they can use the music without having to make a separate copy of the library.

Copy the iTunes Music folder to the external drive.
Leave the folder "iTunes" and the two files "iTunes Music Library.xml" and "iTunes Library" in each users "Music" folder.
Change the iTunes Music Folder Location to point to the copied "iTunes Music" folder on the external drive, for each user, here:
    iTunes > Preferences > Advanced > General.
The original "iTunes Music" folder can now be deleted from the computers main hard drive.
If the external drive is not connected and running when a user starts iTunes, the application will default back to the standard location, ~/Music/iTunes.
You can also have multiple users share the same music library by moving the folder as above, to the top level (where the System, Library, Applications and Users folders live) of the computers hard drive, if you do not want to use an external HD.

  • I have an iMac with 2 internal drives and set-up with multiple user accounts.  How do I create a path to store data files on my second drive within an application?

I have an iMac with 2 internal drives and a multiple user account set-up.  Hw do I create a path to store data files on the second drive within an application?

This is the Mac mini forum not the iMac forum however...
Applications written for average users like Photoshop, Word, i.e. GUI based applications provide a 'Save' dialog box which while allow selecting second drives or any drive. The dialob box initially shown might be in the simple mode but you just need to click on the triangle to show the full set of options. You should then see the different drive names amongst other options.
If your referring to an application your writing yourself then you need to build a pathname. This can be in one of two styles depending on the programming system your using. This could be a POSIX style path or a Mac style path.
    POSIX = /Volumes/volname/foldername
    Mac style = Volname:foldername:

Oh nice, there's a PassKeeper application for the iPhone and iPad.  Simply install it and it should talk you through steps, otherwise their website is probably a great place to check.

I really like the application 1Password, and it works across all the products, Mac, PC, iPad, iPhone.

  • Can I alter security settings for multiple users of fingerprint reader on iphone 5 - i.e. if i allow my daughter to set her fingerprint, can I stop her from accessing itunes store to make purchases???

My daughter wants to access my iphone 5 by adding her fingerprint. Can I alter the security settings so that she cannot make itunes purchases etc?

Not if you want to be able to continue to make iTunes purchases too. You can lock out access to iTunes store using Restrictions (which always needs a passcode to change, Touch ID won't work for changing/removing Restrictions) but that means no one can use any of the restricted features.
iOS has no concept of multiple users with differing access levels like this. Touch ID stores multiple fingerprints, but they're supposed to be all from the same person, the device's owner, not multiple users.
You're going to have to buy your daughter her own iPhone... ;-)

  • HT4847 Can I have multiple users's family devices backed up to the cloud e.g. 2 iPhones and 2 iPads under the same iTunes account

Just got a second iPad for the home.
Can I have multiple users's family devices backed up to the cloud e.g. 2 iPhones and 2 iPads under the same iTunes account?

Yes, but it's not usually recommended to share an iCloud account within a family.  If you do, any data you sync with iCloud will be merged and you, for example, will end up with each other's contacts and calendars on your devices.  Also, any action taken on one device (such as adding or deleting a contact) will be replicated on the other devices.  You will also all be sharing the same 5GB of free storage for all your data and device backups.
Normally it's best to use separate iCloud accounts for each person's devices.  This will keep your data separated, and allow each person to have their own free 5GB of storage.  You can continue to share the same iTunes ID within the family; the ID you use for iCloud does not need to be the same as the one your use for iTunes purchasing.  (Each person should also use a separate ID on their devices for iMessage and FaceTime to avoid getting each other's text messages and FaceTime calls.)
