Multiple users on one mac sharing one itunes library

Hi, I read through this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3753008 and was able to have two users share one itunes library on one computer (yay).  However, for the new user, she can't add any music files to her itunes even though I already made sure that she had read/write permissions for the shared folder.  Can anyone help?  Thanks!  (I recently upgraded to mountain lion on a 2009 macbook, if that matters at all.  Thanks.)

During the last months... did you get the answer yet, i also would like to know if this is possible

  • Adding a new user account or just sharing one account?

Hello - looking for the best practice with this - my wife has an old PC laptop which is nearing the end of its life. She will probably just share my iMac with me. If so, her photos will be imported into iPhoto and her iTunes library will have to be migrated over. She also has an iphone with her own set of contacts in it. Three questions for folks out there who have multiple users on their macs:
    1. Would it be best if she just had her own account on the mac or can we just share one account?
    2. If we go the route of two separate accounts, will Time Machine be able to backup this new account?
    3. Can one iTunes library and one iPhoto library be shared across two separate accounts?
    Thank you.
    Steve

    1. It is usually best to have two separate accounts.
    2. Yes.
    3. Possible, but usually simpler to maintain separate libraries.

  • One of my movies I bought shows up on my mac in the itunes library but not on the apple tv.

I own about 30 movies on my apple tv and one of my movies I bought shows up on my mac in the itunes library but not on the apple tv. How do I fix this issue and get it to show up on my apple tv?

    Two things to check
    1st
    Settings
    Mail, Contacts, Calendars
    AccountsHow many accounts are there?
    2nd
From Home screen press Mail app
Press the top left button (next to Inbox)
You'll see all the Inboxes for the accounts present
You'll know either way whether one or more accounts has been setup.
SIDE NOTE: Not too sure about MobileMe though, might be integrated with iCloud, not sure.

I have multiple users on my Mac and I was wondering how you tell the system to retain all the user names so they don't have to enter their email addresses every time ???

    Email addresses into what?
Each user should have their own account and password to log in.  Each is independent of the other.  So for Mail each has their own Mail account if they set one up in Mail.
That's the way it should be set up.  Are you using a single account and allowing multiple users to use that one single account?  If so then in Mail at least you could set up individual mail accounts.  But everything else in the system is shared.

  • I have multiple users on my computer with separate iTunes libraries.  can we share?

I have multiple users on my computer with separate iTunes libraries.  Is it possible to share the libraries?  The "share library" preference doesn't seem to work.

Hi b noir, I also have two users on one pc with two different iTunes libraries.  But I also want to put them onto an external hard drive so that I can free up some memory on the pc.  So I figure I need to consolidate the two users iTunes libraries first before moving to hard drive?  But not quite sure how to do that on the iTunes 11?  Thanking you in advance!!

  • How do you share Aperture file across multiple users on same Mac?

How do you share Aperture file across multiple users on same Mac? Seems this should be a preferences choice.

When you share your library between users, you may run into permission and ownership problems, if both users are editing the Aperture library and not only reading it. To avoid that, it helps to put the Aperture library onto a separate disk or a separate partion of your hard drive. For s separate partition or disk you can enable the "ignore ownership on this volume" flag. Then all users can access the library as owners of this library.
You might try to put the aperture library into a shared folder on your mac, but that has caused problems recently, i.e. when the library also contains video files.

  • How do I transfer one playlist from my itunes library to my ipod?

How do I transfer one playlist from my itunes library to my ipod. I do not want to sync my whole library music. I tried to set to *manually managing music* and drag the playlist. Doesn't work. If I try to sync *selected playlists* it wants to delete all the other music that I have on my ipod.
    Any suggestions?

Ha, it worked. Thank you anyways!

This should be in the iPod Nano forum https://discussions.apple.com/community/ipod/ipod_nano. You are in the iPhone forum. I'll ask the mods to move this for you.

  • Updating itunes library occurs with sharing an iTunes Library

    Hi,
I have two macs, one of the macs has the iTunes library on a hard drive connected to it, lets called it "Mac1". I have another mac called "Mac2" which I mount the hard drive from "Mac1".
So I go about and make sure iTunes is not running on "Mac1", then go ahead and start iTunes on "Mac2". After I'm done and shutdown iTunes, if I restart iTunes on "Mac1" I get the message "updating itunes library" which takes a while since I have a large iTunes library.
Any ideas? I'm very careful to shutdown on iTunes on one computer before starting it up on another.
Thanks for any input, this is driving me crazy

I think I may take your suggestion and just have separate libraries.
you can use _*Home Sharing*_ to keep them in sync.
also, there are 3rd party tools such as
    PowerTunes
    TuneRanger
    Syncopation
however, a "one-iTunes-library-with-multiple-computers" approach is doable. click here for information.

  • Who is Sharing my iTunes Library?

I was wondering if there's a way to find out who is sharing my iTunes library on a local network.

You can make your copy of iTunes ignore other shared libraries on your network by unticking the checkbox next to Shared Libraries under the Edit > Preferences... > General tab.
Of more concern might be the network secutity implications if your machine is sharing a network with unknown others.

  • Sharing multiple user accounts to AppleTV on one Mac

I can't remember if I did this before with software 1.0/1.1, but I'm sure the possibility of having two concurrently active iTunes libraries on a single machine has been discussed as one way of separating out content.
To do some more testing on software 2.00 + libraries I have just created a new user account with a new iTunes library, and registered it as a shared AppleTV library on AppleTV 2 running 2.01 (I've not updated to 2.02 yet for a reason).
    So imagine this setup:
    Single iMac.
User Account A - called iMac - the main sync/share library.
User Account B - called Test - the sharing library.
Both Users iTunes apps open (switching between users obviously without logging out).
AppleTV listed under devices in both iTunes instances.
Both iMac and Test libraries solid white in 'Computers' setting on AppleTV.
Can play iMac content logged into User account A having switched from B.
I select My Shared Music - long wait - says it's not connected to shared Test library, and checking Computers 'Test' is now greyed out.
Switching to user B the AppleTv is still listed under Devices. I still cannot connect to My Shared Music and 'Test' Library remains greyed out. I can still while logged into B play the sync/share content of User A - I had expected I would be able to do the converse.
Both iTunes libraries show the other library under shared libraries in iTunes.
    This is baffling me.
    Rebooted etc etc etc.
iTunes can see the shared library of the other user account but AppleTV can't.

Just to be clear, are you saying you can't connect to the test library regardless of which user account you have active.
    That's right.
The main sync/stream library content is available on AppleTV regardless of which account I'm logged into on the iMac. I have nothing at all synced so know that I'm seeing the "main" iMac library streaming.
Both libraries show up as shared libraries in the other's iTunes shares, and I can load the 'test' library under the other account iTunes instance and play music back which proves to me that the other account isn't dormant.
I've just updated iTunes as I hadn't done the last update but no difference.
Am now updating AppleTv to 2.02, I just hope that that doesn't disable simultaneous audio via optical and HDMI.

  • Sharing an iTunes Library on one Mac?

I've one Mac on which Bob would like to use the
iTunes Library of Alice with Alice agreement.
Alice has already enabled the sharing on her account.
But Bob doesn't see anything when looking for shared
    Libraries.
    How is this possible?

Thank you for this great piece of documentation
which help to find a path to stop stupid duplication
of huge libraries. A search within the Apple Support
with the string "Sharing iTunes Library same computer"
    gave no useful information.
    Now I have a mostly similar problem I don't find a
word about in the Apple web support.
Bob is able to add to his Library any number of
piece of musique from Alice. But when he wants to add some
albums, the albums aren't imported. The pieces
of musique included in all the albums are included
in the "Library" but the albums contents definitions
    are lost.
How is it possible to access to a large set of
well organised albums from another user's account?

  • HT202213 multiple admin users on one iMac using central iTunes library & Merging iTunes accts

    Hi guys.
Instead of just trying to share itunes across several devices. i'm also trying to share itunes and one library across multiple users of one iMac without having to ask for permission everytime somebody wants to listen to music.
Also, since starting a family, we'd like to combine our separate itunes accounts into one master account for the household. is there any way to merge itunes accounts and permissions for songs and apps?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thnx

You can't merge iTunes accounts, purchases are tied to their respective Apple ID.
Not sure about the other, you'd be better off posting to the iMac or iTunes section.
