Multiple users on same external drive

I want the three itunes users to be able to see the whole library of songs when each is logged on. At present when a new song is imported the others do not automatically have it shown in their song list. How can I make it so everyone sees all the music all the time despite who imported it? The file is on an external drive and all users are set to use that file folder. The drive is on 24/7 so there is no disconnect reconnect issue.

It's usually best to Partition the drive, so TM on each Mac has it's own, exclusive space. See items #4 and 5 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip.*

How do you share Aperture file across multiple users on same Mac? Seems this should be a preferences choice.

When you share your library between users, you may run into permission and ownership problems, if both users are editing the Aperture library and not only reading it. To avoid that, it helps to put the Aperture library onto a separate disk or a separate partion of your hard drive. For s separate partition or disk you can enable the "ignore ownership on this volume" flag. Then all users can access the library as owners of this library.
You might try to put the aperture library into a shared folder on your mac, but that has caused problems recently, i.e. when the library also contains video files.

  • Use same external drive for itunes in mac and windows?

    Hi,
I have a Macbook Air that has bootcamp and I use 99% of my time under Windows 7.
All of my music and movies are on an external hard drive and I have a problem using
it for iTunes under Windows and the Mac at the same time.
Is it possible to have both versions point to the same external drive?
I tried almost everything but it fails as the file paths are stored once and for all in
    the iTunes library file.
When booting under OS/X and opening iTunes, it loads the .itl file and shows all music
but of course it doesn't see anything since the path under OS/X has nothing to do with
    the one under Windows.
My iTunes lib was created under Windows and all files are stored in a variation of:
    J:\Private\My Music\iTunes[Rock | Classical | Soundtracks]
Under OS/X of course the path is totally different:
    /Volumes/DRIVE_J/Private/My Music/iTunes/[Rock | Classical | Soundtracks]
Now if I reimport everything in iTunes for OS/X it will change all the paths and then
Windows will not be able to fetch the files.
Isn't there a way to have relative paths so both the OS/X and Windows versions
of iTunes work flawlessly without caring at all about which OS is running?
    This is driving me nuts.
I'm not talking about Sharing an iTunes library over a network. I want to share the
same physical folder between Windows and OS/X
    Thanks for any help.

  • Two computers using same external drive with TM?

This will probably display my ignorance, but my daughter just got a macbook with leopard installed, and I'm planning on upgrading to leopard on my iMac.
So long as it has enough gigs, can I purchase only one external drive and use TM to back up both computers to the same external drive?

    Definitely yes.
That's what I'm doing. I have a 250GB external drive connected to my iMac, and this drive hosts the TM backup of the imac and of my 2 macbooks.
The drive is always physically connected with the iMac. Macbooks backup over network. Setup is easy too: first make sure your laptop can see the backup drive as a network share. Then set it as the TM drive. That's it.
The only issue I found is that somehow my macbooks don't do automatic backups every hour no matter how I configure it. I have to right-click on TM icon and choose "backup now". This is yet to be figured out. Other than that, everything is great.

  • 2 of the same external drives showing up in Lr

Yesterday, I mistakenly imported some trash files (html) into Lr. This caused Lr to crash whenever the image came up in the viewer on my screen. Weird, but luckily I was able to get the files out of Lr, and everything seems all better.
However, during the crash, I pulled out the external drive everything is stored without unmounting it. I know know that mac and programs really don't like that.
Now post crash, in my left nav, Lr is showing the same external drive twice. And now when I import, it goes to the second one.
What did I do and is it fixable?
Thank you very much. Image attached,
35,000 images so far, and Lr is very quick. Backing up my backups...
    Lr 2.1
imac 3.06 Core 2 Duo 4 GB SDRAM
35,000 images so far in 1 catalog
    Canon Gear

    You described what you did!
You do have but one drive, and LR is seeing double, so to speak?
I suspect, though, that it's using different folders inside the "doubled version". Use LR to consolidate all images inside of one, then delete the 'other', after double checking there are no images inside of 'it'. This all after a complete backup.

  • Can't show User/Library in external drive

I can set my Mac to show Library in Users on the main drive (terminal or keystroke) but NOT on an external drive...
How can I access User/Library on external drives?

Check that you’re in the correct folder and entering the exact text posted.
If you’re using the Go to Folder command and providing Library, it’ll open the one in the current folder. If you provide ~/Library/, it’ll always open the one in your home folder.
If you’re using the chflags command, the path will look like /Volumes/volumename/Users/username/Library/ and not /Users/username/Library/.

  • Multiple Macs using the same external drive

I have two MBP's and am trying to get the new laptop to see the libraries on the external drive. Is there any way to get the new laptop/itunes to see the existing files?

I just checked mine and I cannot access all the other users' accounts.

  • Sharing music w/ multiple users on same iMac

I have four accounts on an iMac and want to provide access to the iTunes library on an external hard drive for each user. Can you tell me how they can use the music without having to make a separate copy of the library.

Copy the iTunes Music folder to the external drive.
Leave the folder "iTunes" and the two files "iTunes Music Library.xml" and "iTunes Library" in each users "Music" folder.
Change the iTunes Music Folder Location to point to the copied "iTunes Music" folder on the external drive, for each user, here:
    iTunes > Preferences > Advanced > General.
The original "iTunes Music" folder can now be deleted from the computers main hard drive.
If the external drive is not connected and running when a user starts iTunes, the application will default back to the standard location, ~/Music/iTunes.
You can also have multiple users share the same music library by moving the folder as above, to the top level (where the System, Library, Applications and Users folders live) of the computers hard drive, if you do not want to use an external HD.

  • IPhoto Library Sharing by Multiple Users on Same Computer

Is there a "tried and true" way to set up iPhoto08 to allow my wife and I to share/access the Photo Library? I prefer not to set up external drive for library. It appears that photos I download from camera to iPhoto on my "login" do not load to the library on my wife's login and vise/versa.
Any help would be appreciated. Hopefully not too technical please. Thanks.
    Jeff

There are two ways to share, depending on what you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. then:
    Quit iPhoto in both accounts
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external HD set to ignore permissions. You could also use a dmg.
(Some people have had success putting the library in the Users/ Shared folder. If you do this make sure the file permissions are set to allow read/write access to everyone.)
In each account in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • Problem sharing media between multiple users on same Mac

My wife and I have an eMac, running Mac OS 10.4.11, with iTunes 9.2.1(4).  We each have separate user accounts.  Previously, I had imported several albums into my iTunes library.  Now, my goal is to be able to share the albums that I had imported with my wife.  Simultaneously, our available hard drive capacity is getting limited, so I decided to put my iTunes media on an external fire wire drive by Iomega.  I followed article HT1449, transferring my media (and, not the other associated library files) and that part, at least, seems to be working fine.  The folder "iTunes media" is now located on a partition of the external drive.  As far as I can tell, both my wife and I have "read and write" permissions for this partition.  Ownership of the partition volume is "ignored".
Now, as for setting up my wife's iTunes library and linking it up to the iTunes media folder on the external drive, I have followed HT1203 as a guide, changing the path of the media folder to the partition on the external drive.  But, it simply doesn't seem to have any effect.  There are no songs available within iTunes from her user account.
I would appreciate any guidance on how to resolve this.  Thank you.

Chris, won't this copy the music contained in the external media folder, to the media folder under his wife's account?
They are both using the same media folder so iTunes won't copy it anywhere.

  • How do I copy a mac user from an external drive?

At the apple store about 2 weeks ago now they rold me that the hard drive was busted and I needed a new one. So, the hard drive was too damaged to make a disk image so they made a copy of my profile using terminal to my external drive. How would I moving the profile back on my new drive.

Copy the contents of the folder on the external drive to your user folder on the new hard drive. Example - replace the Music folder with the old one. If you have folders that are the same name it should ask you if it is okay to replace the new ones. Be sure you don't have anything in the folders you replace, as you would lose any contents.

  • Multiple iPhoto libraries from external drive. How to work with them all

I'm not an expert user so forgive me. But I have tons of pictures and videos of family.
I've had to save 2 libraries on an external drive and going on my 3rd. I had to do it because the computer was running super slow and giving me warnings. Each library is about 115GB.
Now my question is: Whats the easiest way to work with all libraries a the same time? I create slide shows and videos and often need pictures and videos that are in the different libraries..... problem being, I have to close a library, open the next, import and export photos from one to the other.......
I think you get my point.....any suggestions are appreciated.

    Thank you again Larry.
Unfortunately some horrible thing just happened . I was getting ready to put your advice to work and...........
I went to verify all my libraries were in the External drive (My passport for Mac) before I did anything else.  I couldn't find the drive. I  called the company and apparently the is a problem with the drive and my only option is to try recover the data from a recovery data service....
What did just happen???? I'm still hopeful I can recover it. and I may have a back up in another drive.
So this is semi-related question. How many back ups of your pictures should you have to be safe? and How do I know which devices are reliable? I thought these two Mt Passports from Western Digital were ok? Any advice?

  • Move /User directory to external drive

I am trying to move my non-admin user directories over to a firewire-connected external drive because my my main drive is full.
I am able to copy the directory easily enough, and redefine the user path using the Preferences panel, but I cannot get permissions working on the drive. I have tinkered with the "Ignore owners" setting, but that doesn't do anything. Disk Utility keeps reporting "Owners Enabled: No".
I want the same file permissions and security as I had before. i.e. each user account is protected from each other.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions-
mac mini, ibook g3, ibook g4, imac Mac OS X (10.5.5)
i moved a users home to a usb drive recently, i did it by going to sysprefs->users->right click username, advanced options and in there, browse to new location.
You are running Leopard and the above method works there, but it doesn't work in Tiger (this is the Tiger forum!).
one word of warning - i did this for my only admin user, all worked fine, then the mac lost power for some reason (never mind why), which meant that the mount point /Volumes/USB was left there, so when it rebooted it mounted my USB on /Volumes/USB-1 which meant it couldn't find my only users home dir, which meant i couldn't log in to fix it. so make sure you have an admin user on the system that uses a local disk (internal) so you can always log in and correct.
This is an important warning for anyone who moves a home directory, no matter what method is used - thanks very much!

  • I have multiple libraries on an external drive. Somehow all the iTunes library files i.e. iTunes Library.itl, xml, itdb, Media folder, etc disappeared! Only the music files remain. Now when I start iTunes w/option it can't find any of the old libraries!

Help! I 'm using an old G4 powerbook, Mac OSX 10.5.8, iTunes ver 10. I have multiple iTunes libraries on an external drive. Everything was fine for a while, then all of the iTunes library files, i.e. iTunes Library.itl, xml, itdb, artwork folder, Media folder, etc mysteriously disappeared! Only the music files remain (thank god) So now when I start iTunes w/option key to choose a library, I can't choose any of them because iTunes won't recognize them. Because all the library stuff is missing. So can I re-create the library files? (I don't care if I lose my ratings)
Or should I create a new empty library on the external drive, then manually move all the music files to the Media folder in the new library?
I tried some stupid ideas like creating a new library just to start iTunes, then going into prefs and advanced, then under iTunes Media folder location, selecting the location of the old library on the external, to see if iTunes would then find all the music which is still there, but no workee.
I'm out of ideas, and I searched the archives.
    Help! anyone?
    Scott

I don't know if this is me adding files to iTunes when the external wasn't connected
    it is.
is it OK to just keep deleting that library on the Air?
    i wouldn't - at least not until i
    mount the external
point iTunes media folder location back to the external via preferences > advanced
consolidate my library via file > library > organize library
The ntfs hasn't seem to be causing any problems, but I've always wanted to know.
in order for your Mac to write to NTFS drives, it needs some help by installing e.g. the NTFS 3G driver. apparently that or something similar is installed on your Mac already. preferably, it would be formatted for Mac but then windows machines would need to have e.g. MacDrive installed to recognize the drive.

  • Move Users folders from external drive to a new internal drive

    Hi All,
I have a white Intel iMac running Snow Leopard. I have kept the Users folder (4 users) on an external hard disk (too many photos and movies). The internal hard disk recently died, but since all user data was on the external, I wasn't too worried.
The iMac now has a new hard disk, and I've installed the system back, starting from the original System Install DVD so that all the iApps are also reinstalled.
What I want to do now is to move the user folders to the internal drive, and use the external for backups. It seems that I can't use Migration Assistant because it only works when moving data from another Mac or another startup drive. I've looked around the forums and on the web, and the only thing I found was a post on TUAW in which the writer talked about eventually having to do this but without giving much info about how to do it (http://www.tuaw.com/2009/05/14/tuaw-tip-moving-your-home-folder-to-another-disk- or-moving-it).
Does anyone have any experience moving the user folders from an external drive to an internal drive, (or even just having a Mac recognize user folders on an external drive from another machine)?

    Hilal Malawi wrote:
Thanks, but that site doesn't have a clear answer.
Correct. As it clearly states, there are too many variables to have detailed solutions for every possible situation.
In the 'pink' box, which best matches my situation, the instructions begin with: "•You must be logged on to the account being moved...".
That's not clear at all. How do I log in to an account that doesn't exist yet? Connecting a hard disk that has a home folder to a new Mac doesn't allow me to 'log on' to that home folder's account, because it doesn't yet exist on the new Mac.
You may have to set up user accounts "from scratch." Then change the ownership and permissions on the old home folders so you can copy the contents of the sub-folders from the old home folders to the new ones.
If you're comfortable with permissions and Terminal, this may help: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20013630-263.html
