Multiple versions of labview on 1 computer

Hello,
I have just purchased LV 8.2 and am about to install it on my computer.  The old version of LV I currently have on my computer is 7.1.  Can I run both versions on the same computer or is it beneficial to take off LV 7.1 first before installing the new 8.2.  Any opinions?

Azazal,
You can certainly run both versions on the same computer.  I have 6.1, 7.1, 8.0, and 8.20 installed on this machine and I regularly have more than one version open at the same time.
However, Paulo is very correct by saying that toolkits typically only install for one version of LabVIEW and that you need to be careful not to open your VIs in the wrong version of LabVIEW.  If you were to open and save a LabVIEW 7.1 VI in 8.20 you would be unable to open it again in 7.1.
Matt, great links - I'm going to repeat that first one here in clickable form:

  • Managing Multiple Versions of LabVIEW on same Computer

With a new version of LabVIEW coming out every year, and service packs every 6 months, what is the best way of keeping different versions of LabVIEW (8.6, 2009, 2010 SP1) on the same computer, without being effected by new installations?
I have read up on some people using virtual machines to do this. From past experience with virtual machines, I remember only being able to
use a single monitor with the VM. However, it is very helpful to have 2 monitors when programming; are there VMs that can run in 2 monitors (just like
    a normal OS?)
    Thanks for the input.

    Hi Jim,
I have installed multiple versions of LabVIEW on the same PC.  When doing upgrades, such as a service pack, it does not affect other installed versions.  This was done as a regular install in the OS, not using Virtual Machines.
I have been doing this since 2001, and for some customers, they have versions ranging from 6.1 to 2009.  Only in one recent situation has there been an unusual event with multiple parallel installations.  It was due to a DAQmx driver installation (long story).
Overlaping drivers should not be an issue.  The issue with the DAQmx driver was that I forced to revert a LV8.2 driver by cheating on the installation.  It worked for 8.2 but screwed up something in 2010.  That was because I did not install the DAQmx drivers the way they were supposed to be installed.

  • Multiple versions of PSE on same computer.

Can multiple versions of PSE be installed and used on one computer, e.g. PSE5, PSE8, PSE11, and PSE 13.  Will there be conflict or other kinds of problems?  Are the different versions in any way connected or are they each entirely stand alone with "touching" each other?  Or, another way of putting this is, do I have to uninstall prior versions of PSE before installing a newer version on the same computer?  Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Is this true of the organizer as well as the editor?  If files are stored in the organizer of one version, are they readily accessible for editing in another version?
That has nothing to do with several versions. Files are NOT stored in the organizer. They are somewhere on your drive(s). If you have a single Elements version and several catalogs pointing to the same files on your drive(s), each catalog will be able to access the same files... until you move, rename or delete them from another catalog.

  • How to install Spectral Measurements and Modulation Toolkits for multiple versions of Labview

I installed NI-RFSG, NI-RFSA, the Spectral Measurements Toolkit, and the Modulation Toolkit.  I have both LabVIEW 7.1 and 8.0 installed on my system.  I developed an application in LV 8.0 and now I need to revert it to LV 7.1.  The problem I am having is that add-on toolkits seem to only have been installed for LV 8.0 because there are several missing VIs and controls when I try to open the LV 7.1 version.  I tried re-installing the toolkits, but this is not fixing the problem.  How can I get the installer to install the toolkits for both versions of LabVIEW?
    Thanks for your help,
    Cherie

    Hello Cherie,
it's a know issue. You can read it in the modulation toolkit readme :
    Two Versions of LabVIEW Installed
The installer supports installation of the Modulation Toolkit into a single
version of LabVIEW; installation of the Toolkit into multiple separate
installations of LabVIEW (for instance LabVIEW 7.0 and LabVIEW 7.1 installed
on the same PC and in separate directories) is not supported or recommended.
An unsupported means of doing so though involves manually copying files from
one LabVIEW installation to another. To do so, you can install the
Modulation Toolkit to the home directory of one LabVIEW installation, and
then manually copy the installed files to the other LabVIEW installation.
The following list includes pertinent directories and files. Copy all files
from these directories, including any subdirectories, using the equivalent
relative paths to the LabVIEW home directory for the target.
    <LabVIEW Home>\vi.lib\AddOns\Modulation\*.*
    <LabVIEW Home>\vi.lib\AddOns\NISML\*.*
    <LabVIEW Home>\examples\Modulation\*.*
    <LabVIEW Home>\resource\objmgr\NIMTAttribs.rc
    <LabVIEW Home>\resource\objmgr\NIMTAttribs.rch
    <LabVIEW Home>\help\lvmod.txt
    <LabVIEW Home>\help\lvmod.chm
    <LabVIEW Home>\help\lvdmt.txt
    <LabVIEW Home>\help\lvdmt.chm
Note that this listing does not include all installed files. Also, copying
files in this manner is not equivalent to a full installation into the
alternative version of LabVIEW. Most notably error text unique to the
Modulation Toolkit will not be updated and the Example Finder listings will
not show the Modulation Toolkit examples.

  • Can you run multiple versions of Message  on one computer, i.e. one for each phone line on our account?

Does anyone know if you can run more than one Message+ on one computer, one for each of our phones?

        CATTULLOS
Great question! The way to do it is, you will need to open up multiple browsers. (one for each phone number) The only thing you would need to do is log into www.vzw.com for each individual number to be able to send the text messages. Keep us posted let us know if this helps.

  • Multiple Versions of CS on a Computer

I have both CS 5 Design Premium and CS 5.5 Design Premium (Upgrade) on my computer. Can I uninstall CS5 from my computer to free up hard drive space or do they share files and I should leave them alone? I know you can install CS 5.5 as an Upgrade by itself granted you verify the CS 5 serial number. And when I upgrade to CS 6 can I uninstall all previous versions?
(I am running Windows XP and 7)

Yes, you can. Just keep in mind that it will mess with file associations and your icons will appear stranger plus things like browsing stuff in Bridge may not work. You can fix all that manually or by reinstalling CS5.5 afterwards again.

  • Finder shows multiple versions of same shared computer

Ever since upgrading to Yosemite my finder shows multiple versions of my computer in the "shared" panel of each finder window.  So, instead of just saying "Bedroom Computer," it says "Bedroom Computer," "Bedroom Computer (2)" "Bedroom Computer (3)," etc., five times in total.  I've tried renaming the computer in the sharing System Preferences panel -- the newly named computer appears in the side panel, but the multi-numbered versions of the old-named computer remain in the list as well.  They disappear if I turn off Wi-Fi, but re-appear when I turn wi-fi back on.  Any suggestions as to how to get rid of these phantom computers would be greatly appreciated.

The Mac that was causing the issue isn't on the network at the moment so I can't say if restoring all my base stations has helped the initial problem, but now I see something new.
Oh Darn, now I don't seem to be able to insert images.
What I'm seeing is my Mac Pro listed in “Devices” and in “Shared” in my Finder side bar, and no it fails to connect to itself if I try.
Wondering if this could be the new way to represent things when I'm using wi-fi and ethernet connections simultaneously.

  • Multiple versions on one computer?

    Hi!
I am a new Macbook user that I bought to start developing Mac software.
I would like to use multiple versions of Mac OS X on my macbook if possible.
Can this be done so that I would have 10.3, 10.4 and 10.5 of Mac OS X installed and select the version on boot.
    Thank you!

Just to build on what TP has mentioned... the reason for this is that older versions of OS X are never updated for newer hardware. As all Macs ship with the most current OS on them, there is never a need to update previous versions of the OS. There have been a number of significant hardware updates since 10.3 (I don't believe any version of 10.3 was ever released for the Intel Macs). If you had an older MacBook that came with 10.4, you could get away with installing both 10.4 (using the version it shipped with) and 10.5. If you have a more current MacBook, 10.5 is pretty much your only choice.

  • How to download multiple versions of iTunes from a single computer?

Is there an Apple ftp or other site where any current version of iTunes can be downloaded?   I have a 32 bit Windows computer that can't do downloads, so I have to use another computer to download iTunes. If I try to download from a Mac it only offers the Mac version and my other Windows computer only offers the 64 bit version because it is 64 bit.  I could not find any link on the pages to download other versions of iTunes.  If I disable javascript I can see options to download all the versions but then the download button does not work.  So if anyone knows of a direct link to the different versions of iTunes and Quicktime, I would love to know what it is so I can get the updates I need.

See the further information area of Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for direct download links for iTunes. iTunes no longer needs QuickTime so you could simply uninstall it. Otherwise this should do it: QuickTimeInstaller.exe (V7.7.5).

  • Identifying and Converting from an older version of LabVIEW

I have an old .vi program that I am trying to access and run now. I don't know what version of LabView it was written in but I do know it came off of a Windows 95 computer.
    Any Suggestions?

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You said "trying to". Does that mean you've been unsuccessful? On what OS are you trying to run it?
When you open an old VI in a newer version of LabVIEW, if the VI isn't too old, then it will open. If you close the VI you'll get a dialog asking you to save it. The "explain changes" will tell you the version of LabVIEW used to write the VI.
If you cannot open the VI because it's too old, and your LabVIEW is too new (e.g., opening a LabVIEW 5.x VI with LV2011), then you can post a request in the Version Conversion board. If the code is really old (e.g., LabVIEW 3.x or earlier), chances are you will not be able to get it upconverted since versions that old require a special toolkit from NI that is not publicly available.
