Multiple Windows Installs Using Parallels

I'm getting ready to buy a new MacBook Pro. I need to be able to test websites in various combinations of Windows and IE. Can Parallels run multiple versions of Windows on the same machine? I'll need at least two separate installs of XP and one of Vista.

I believe so but I think you should look into VMware Fusion as I use this and i believe it is faster and nicer but thats my opinion of another option so check it out!

How do you reassign a device to Mac OS once it has been assigned to the Windows OS using Parallels?  I've tried ejecting device and plugging in again.  I've tried restarting Mac and shutting down Mac completely, but never get the device window to pop up to select the Mac for the device.

  • Would it be possible for time machine to back-up files from 3rd party software such as windows platform using parallel?

I'm wondering if it would be possible for time machine to back-up files from 3rd party software such as Windows XP using parallel software especially if it is isolated from mac?  Any advise would be greatly aprreciated.

Short answer - yes Time Machine will backup everything within the Mac OS system.
Longer answer - Parallels creates a pvm disk image "Parallels Virtual Machine" which Time Machine backs up.
Due to the changes to the pvm file Time Machine is unable to read the minor changes and will somtimes do a full backup of it each time Time Machine runs and can chew through Back up drive space quite quickly.

  • Can 2 gb ram on 2.4GHz  run windows 7 using parallell desktop

If I buy the new 13 inches 2.4GHz with 2GB RAM, is it enough to run Windows seven using Parallel Desktop or should I have 4GB of RAM?
    Thank you

When running a virtual machine such as Parallel you'd be better off running as much memory in the Book that you can afford. 4GB should be enough but 2GB you may find a little troublesome.
Also look into Sun's "Virual Box" it is a free VM. Not as many bells and whistles as Parallels but work very well.

  • Using Mac Word for Windows software using Parallels

    Hello,
I'm using Parallels. I'm running a Windows program. The program has an export to Word function. I do not have Word on Windows, I just have  MS Office on the Mac side. When I Export to Word in Windows, it says I need to have Word installed. Is there a way to have my Windows software utilize Word using Office for Mac?
    Thanks!

Sorry, but no. Save the file on your Mac OS X volume if you have third-party software on Windows that enables you to write to a Mac drive. Or find out if you really need to have Word installed in order to export a file from your program to a Word compatible file.

  • Multiple Windows installations on Bootcamp

I am presently running Windows XP via Bootcamp on my 13" MBP. I'm considering a change to Win 7 but didn't want to just dump XP and replace it with 7. Is there a way to setup multiple Windows (or even Linux) installations and have them all selectable on startup instead of just having the present choice of OSX or Windows?

Mac and MBR doesn't support 3 unique partitons.
Windows will have its own dual boot menu. OS X won't see all three.
You generally always have Windows boot menu when you have more than one partition.
Mac EFI boot manager in this case, by shrinking Windows, you won't.
Boot Camp doesn't support triple boot, but there are people that have.
Just search for Triple-boot on forum or Google or check Ubuntu forum and guides.
Virtual machines are always a lot easier, whether under Mac or under Windows. I doubt you'll really find you need XP in the end.
The normal method is to shink what you have, assuming it is large enough, to create a sub-partition in XP to hold Windows 7.
    http://www.techspot.com/guides/143-dual-boot-windows7/
Normal structure is the GPT, Mac OS X, MBR, Windows, plus EFI partition(s) at the end of each user volume.
Backup, experiment, and proceed. But be ready to restore your hard drive partitions.

  • Multiple Windows accounts using a single Library

I have not found a way to solve this problem but I am convinced that it is my lack of Windows expertise, so hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. I am talking about the iTunes Library and NOT Music Folder.
I have two login accounts in my WinXP environment. I want both of these accounts to have not just access, but full control over iTunes - add music, create and delete playlists, etc. In effect, I want iTunes to see both accounts as if they were one user. There is no issue with simultaneous access and conflicts because the machine is not configured to allow fast user switching(and it can't be - our IT dept won't allow). This also prevents using any sort of solution which uses iTunes music "sharing".
I had no problem locating the iTunes Music Folder in common space so both accounts can access the actual music, but for now, I've had to copy the iTunes Libray.itl (and the XML lib file) into the second user account's Docs and settings\account\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\ path. Then I try remember which was changed last and manually sync - painful and error prone.
I tried copying the iTunes folder and library files to common access space (all users), and then creating shortcuts, renaming the shortcuts to the actual files names (dropping "shortcut to"), and putting the shortcuts in the locations where iTunes expects to find the "real" files. This is how I got it to work on the Mac - with aliases - but I guess that aliases and shortcuts don't exactly behave the same.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks - TK

  • Elements 10 Suddenly will not open. Should I uninstall/deactivate and re-install or will I never be able to use it again? On windows 7 using parallels on Macbook Pro and never had this problem ever.

I ran trouble shooting and conflicts. It now keeps wanting me to switch to a different windows OS rather than 7 which is what I am running and how it worked previously. The only thing I have done in the last several days that may have freaked it out is downloading flash because my flash kept crashing in google chrome (i did days of trouble shooting before doing this. Thanks to Adobe I've used up about 4 days of non productive trouble shooting and now this!). It simply doesn't open anymore - not even an error message.
Just wanted to confirm that the next step should be deinstall/deactivate and then try to reinstall. But worried Adobe has rigged it so that only works if reinstalling on a different computer. Should I anticipate any problems in un & re install?

eventually prompts to select which version to use.
That person is misreading the prompt. It merely tells you that if you DO want to uninstall old versions, you should stop the install now and go do that first because the installer won't do it (and you really don't have to--you can uninstall later if you decide you no longer need the old version). It never says you MUST pick a version, although many people misread it to mean that.

  • How do i install windows xp using parallels

I have a new macbook pro and I need to run windows.  I bought parallels from Apple and Windows XP online.  The windows disc I got says "Reinstallation CD" for Dell laptops only.  I called and told them I received the wrong disc, explained what I needed, and they sent the exact same disc.  When I install it, I get a message that asks me to insert disc 2.  They didn't send 2 discs.  How do I get windows on this computer?

You need to purchase a non-OEM version of XP (if you can still find one). Some OEM discs simply won't work. I'm running Parallels 8 now with an XP VM and had it running since Parallels 6. Updating Parallels didn't affect my XP installation at all. Maybe Amazon may have a full version of XP? I don't know...
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Can Windows 7 using Parallels be recovered from backup

Was wondering if anyone ever had a major failure on their iMac, and decided to replace the machine, and then write their backup disk onto a different machine (in my case, running Snow Leopard, so would find a replacement machine, most likely an iMac that would run Snow Leopard).  Will the Windows 7 environment on Parallels work afterwards?  Or will Windows 7 balk at the new hardware environment and deep six itself?  If that's the case, what do you have to do to get it all up and running? I do have the original Windows 7 disc.  Right now I am cloning the drive using Carbon Copy Cloner, as Apple's onboard backup was too troublesome to deal with on this setup.

Your Windows VM should transfer just fine.

  • My auto-login into Windows 7 using Parallels 7 lost the password entry.  Can't find it in Keychain.  How do I reload Windows 7 without messing with the other programs?

After a Windows 7 auto-update the computer restarted and stopped at the Windows 7 logon screen.  I thought I used my Mac system password when I first loaded Win7 but it won't accept it.  I tried using the Parallels password and it won't accept that.  I checked the keychain and didn't see an entry for Windows 7 login password.  Will reloading Win7 corrupt any programs on the Windows side?  Will inserting the Win7 CD automatically start the reload and write over the old install?

you need to post this in a Windows Seven forum. It is a Windows problem. ,There is a way to Reset your password but I don't have a link to it.
Try Sevenforums.com a very good Win 7 forum.
Google search Reset Windows 7 Admin or user password.
Then once you have reset it WRITE IT DOWN.

  • Can I use Windows XP using Parallels?

    Greetings, all...
OK, I know that I can't run XP using Boot Camp under Lion and my new MacBook Pro - but can I use it running Parallels? I bought XP but have no desire to purchase Windows 7 at the outrageous prices that Microsoft charges. I got Parallels in a 'bundle' that I purchased through MacWorld, so I already have it.
Just wondering - before I go through the laborious task of finding my ancient XP disc.
    Thanks,
    Clinton

so tell me if that worked. because Parallels support is telling me that the reason that parallels won't work with a VM from my xp oem cd on my new rMBP and mountain lion is because it's OEM and not bought "retail" from microsoft. but it's working fine on the old mbp and snow leopard and parallels 7.

  • ITunes in Multiple Windows Profiles using same library files.

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate with iTunes 7.1.1.5.
I have two windows users created on the machine and I have my iTunes library files installed to c:\iTunes both user accounts see the music just fine. The issue that I am having is when I attempt to purchase music from the iTunes store. iTunes in each windows profile will purchase music and download it, add it to the purchased playlist. The issue is that the other windows profile cannot see this purchased music. I have verified that the downloaded music was in the c:\itunes folder, but each windows profile seems to have a different purchased playlist.
Is there some secret to having two windows profiles on the same computer use the same iTunes library?
    Thanks
    ~Shane
      Other OS

Anything downloaded for the library of one profile must be added to the other profile by hand. iTunes does not support doing this automatically, no folder watching feature like other clients have.
iTunes library files are the itunes.itl and itunes.xml file within the iTunes folder for each user.
A good reason for this is podcast subscriptions. Each user can be subscribed to the same podcast. Downloads will be duplicated but this allows one user to delete episode without affecting the other user.

  • Question about two Windows installs using the same Apps

    Hello all .
I know this is more of a general Windows question, but being I am going to be utilizing any solution found on a MBP, I thought I would post this here.
If the world was perfect, this is what I would like to do.
Make three partitions on my MBP, the OSX partition, a 20 gig windows partition (no os), Boot Camp on a smaller partition (like 4 gig or something), and then run parallels on a 4 gig virtual partition.
Then, install all my apps once on the 20 gig windows partition, and have both instances of windows share them. Does anyone know of a windows registry utility that would allow this to be possible?
    Thanks in advance!
P.S. in case your wondering why I would separate the 20 gig partition form the OS, I think it would be easier to share the apps if both OS’s thought they were installed on the “E” drive (not have one think it’s on the C drive, and the other think it’s on E).
    MacBook Pro 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hahaha, you may be right, but there has to be some option to have windows run natively, and in a VM, without having to install all my apps in two locations. That would just take up way to much hard drive space.
