Multiple windows/taskbar buttons

Acrobat X, Windows XP ...
I previously had Acrobat 6.  When I would print multiple documents from another application to PDF, or open multiple PDF documents, they would all go to the same Acrobat display, and would be selectable in the "Windows" dropdown in Acrobat.
Now, in Acrobat X, when I print multiple documents to PDF, each one opens what looks like a separate Acrobat X instance, with a new button on the taskbar at the bottom of the Windows desktop ... needless clutter!  If I open ten docs, I wind up with ten buttons.
Is there a way to make all documents just go to the same place as before, not spawning new taskbar buttons?
Thanks.

By the way, if you have Windows 7 I think you can tell it to group the separate windows into a single taskbar item, but they will still remain independent windows.

  • Two taskbar buttons when playing in Windows 7

I had an easy transition to Windows 7 32-bit, iTunes9 is playing fine...except it's the only program that when I launch it, it adds a second taskbar button at the end of the row, and plays from there. That second button is also the one that's highlighted. All my other programs simply go live from the existing button. A trivial issue, I know, but it's taskbar real estate I could use...is this a bug or another Windows "feature"?

    Hi
I recently did an upgrade from Vista to Win 7. And I have the same thing happening.
Maybe It's a bug in iTunes?.
Ok, It's not that big of a deal, but anyway. It takes up space having two icons.
You can however make it disappear when minimized by right-clicking the taskbar and go to the the toolfield/toolbar options and select 'iTunes'.
It then turns into the toolbar mini player when minimized.

  • Firefox Windows Won't Come Forward When Taskbar Button Is Clicked (Solution)

I posted this issue once before, but the thread was closed, so I am opening a new thread so that I can share the solution.
My problem was that many of my Firefox windows wouldn't come forward when I clicked their taskbar buttons. What that meant was that the content of those windows was permanently lost to me since there was no way to look at them. Reducing the number of windows by closing the ones I could access didn't seem to work.
After complaining here in the forum, I discovered that I had a virus on my computer. I believe it was a root-kit virus, but I don't remember for sure (I don't think the type of virus will have much meaning to most people anyway). Blocking windows and programs from opening is a common behavior of viruses. In fact, many viruses will prevent your anti-virus program from opening, so there is no way for you to scrub the virus from your computer.
All the anti-virus companies (AVG, Symantec, McAfee, etc.) now offer a service where one of their technicians will access your computer remotely and scrub any viruses from your computer. The cost is in the range of $100 to $150. I paid AVG $135 (I found out later that other companies were cheaper). The technician was in another country (the Philippines, I think). Despite that, the technician was very competent and did a good job of eliminating the virus. Once the virus was gone, all my windows opened without a problem. After this experience, I called around to the other companies and found that some of them use technicians in India and some in the Philippines.
So if you are having the problem of programs or windows that won't open, this is the solution.

    Thanks for posting that solution!

  • When a click a button multiple times it opens multiple windows instead of only one. Is this a bug in Firefox?

If i click a link multiple times, it should open only a window(login popup window), but it opens multiple windows.
This does not happened on any other browser(IE, Chrome, Safari, Opera).<br />
If this helps i'm using a jquery plugin popupwindow( http://rip747.github.com/popupwindow/ ).

  • Cs5 multiple documents taskbar

I put this query in the subject into the search and got two posts, one gave me some answers one was unrelated, I might of put in the wrong search keywords and it might be in this forum somewhere, if I duplicated it I'm sorry but I need to word it in my way so I can understand it. Thanks.
What I want to know that in Windows 7 Photoshop CS5 unless all of your open documents are tabbed they appear as separate documents in your taskbar. In CS5 with XP or CS3 with windows 7 this behavior is not present. Is this just a CS5 with windows 7 behavior? Is there anyway to turn this off? I work with multiple documents in Photoshop and having an extra 5 or 6 extra documents in the taskbar is not something I want to deal with. If you like this great but this is a deal breaker for me. I upgraded to CS5 for all the new features, some of which I use.
If there is no way to turn off this behavior I am going to go back to CS3 which doesn't have this or use my XP partition which doesn't use this behavior on the taskbar with CS5.
I have used some of the suggestions I have found on the web but none of them stop the behavior they way CS3 and CS4 behaves.
If you need any other info please let me know.
    Thanks in advance!

I did want to make a minor correction:

CS4, the actual predecessor to CS5, "was" coded for WIndows 7 and [unlike CS5] behaved itself when opening multiple documents.
    Nope.  This is not correct.
Photoshop CS4 released well before Windows 7 did, and even before a beta version of Windows 7 was available.
Photoshop CS4 Released:  October 2008, developed in 2007 and 2008.
Windows 7 Released:  October 2009, public betas available starting December 2008.
Note that there is no overlap here.  Photoshop CS4 was targeted for use with Vista, not Windows 7.  Vista did not have TaskBar Live Preview Thumbnails, though it did offer some "hover over the TaskBar button" thumbnail support for running applications.  I don't believe there was any capability to put an arbitrary image in those thumbnails, however - that's what Windows 7 added.

  • Taskbar buttons are disappearing

Several times in the past couple of weeks, taskbar buttons have mysteriously disappeared. This is apparently XP, where the buttons are rectangular, and each one represents a web site. On another site, I was advised to use Alt-Tab, and that usually helped, but once, it would only allow me to go to the two windows whose buttons were there. The missing buttons mysteriously reappeared in most cases (usually on the right, regardless of where they had been before) , or at least the windows were still there when I clicked on the red X in the upper right corner for the rest.
One clue is that when an ad was slow to come up on the screen--an ad which only supported the web site I was looking at, but was not what I intended to look at--I would switch to another window and then the button for the window I had been on disappeared. I have also seen the button disappear when a site froze, even if it wasn't for a very long time. This also happened on a computer with IE7, but mainly when the site had frozen permanently. I also lost the button for a window I had been on when a popup ad came up.
On another site I was asked if this was taskbar grouping. It was not. Each button represents an individual window. Sometimes there are multiple tabs, but I try to avoid letting that happen.
I could not follow some of the advice given because this computer is at a library. The person who was in charge of the library's computers did not know what was going on.

I forgot how to come here Saturday but I posted this on another site:
I got on the computer about 30 minutes ago. It was the first time it had been turned on all day, but the Internet was already up and I just typed in the site I wanted to go to. The Internet was very, very slow. The button on the taskbar eventually disappeared but the window was still there. The site required me to select a sponsor before I could continue. The sponsor's ad came up as a popup (but very slowly to begin with, with just the blue border and the name of the site, the minimize button, the maximize button, and the red X at the top), with the toolbar so I could type in a new address. At that point, the taskbar button for the popup ad appeared, and so did the button for where I had been, but on the right instead of the left, which would be normal. No problems since then.
My responses on Monday on that other site to a response by someone who claimed none of that was a problem:
Firefox, not Explorer. And whoever was here and turned everything on must have clicked on the Firefox button. It was 12:59 and the library was supposed to open at 1:00. Nothing that happened during those first 10 minutes was "normal".
Well, it just quit. It said "Firefox is sorry" but they didn't tell me how I could get a copy of this report that will be sent. And it destroyed the stuff I had saved. Oh, sure, they act like they're doing me a great big favor by restoring the session. But the email is GONE.
It would be great if I could see what happened, and maybe it would be a clue to what's going on with the buttons.

  • Why can't close open multiple docs in Word 2010 in multiple windows while having the option to close them out while keeping Word open?

End User of mine is wanting to open multiple docs in Word 2010.....first initial glance I thought it was a PICNIC issue. But when addressing it she has it set up to NOT "Show all windows in the taskbar" that option is unchecked so that way she
can close out docs in Word and not actually close Word. But with unchecking that box it only stacks the docs it won't display them in mutliple windows. This is not the case with Excel as she has the option enabled to "Show all windows in the taskbar"
but yet the enduser still has the option to close out the spreadsheet and keep Excel open. Is there anyway to keep that second smaller x in Word to close out the docs but yet open in multiple windows like Excel does?
    Please advise!
Thank you and any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi VyDrix13,
What will happen if you check the option of “Show all windows in the taskbar”?
If you want to closing document and keep Word open, the alternative is to click File > Close, right there under Open and Save.
You also can add the Close button to the Quick Access Toolbar.
If there is anything that I can do for you regarding this issue, feel free to post back.

  • ITunes setup on a NAS with multiple windows users - how?

iTunes setup on a NAS with multiple windows users?
I am very confused on what is the best way to handle this setup for my friends family.  Any help would be appreciated.  Sorry in advance as I know this is a long winded post - I have a feeling this will help others faced with the same issues or questions.
    CURRENT SETUP
I have three new Windows 7 machines networked (two desktops and one laptop) that have four users on each - as busy family with children who need the computers for homework, projects, games, etc...  The goal of this setup is that any user can log onto any computer and have there documents available to them no matter computer was free to use.  I set this up using the library function in Windows 7 and seems to work pretty well.
I have put a Buffalo Linkstation NAS on the system as well.  This was going to serve two purposes 1)  run some backup software to protect the computers and 2) consolidate the iTunes content in one place for all users.  There is also an iPad in the home that I should would be better served by accessing the content on the NAS without requiring any of the computers being on.  Dave is thinking about getting some other playback devices like Apple TV so thought a NAS would be a good way to go.
CURRENT ITUNES SETUP - I have created a new iTunes library on the NAS by holding the SHIFT button down while starting iTunes and pointed to that folder on a Share on the NAS.  There was no music on the system at the time as we are planning to copy this over from an OLD machine that is now not being used.  I have also authorized all the computers and turned on the home sharing feature (although I am not sure what good that does).
This “shift” button trick seesm to also point the default directory there without point to it in the advanced setup tab of iTunes.
I then synced one of the iPods with purchased content on it and synced that to the library after asking me to do so before an update.  All the content showed up in the library and was playable - awesome.
I then logged into each user on each machine (yikes) and installed iTunes  and used the “shift” trick to connect each users iTunes to the database on the NAS.  Everything seems to work - but I have not tested it thoroughly.
    SUMMARY
3 new Windwos 7 networked machines
4 identical users on each machine
    1 TB Buffalo linkstation
iTunes setup with the folder on a SHARE
all user’s itunes connected to the iTunes folder on the NAS
all computers authorized with home sharing turned on.
one iTunes user account signed in on each machine
multiple iPods and one iPad in the system
    QUESTIONS/CONCERNS
Is there a better way to do this on a NAS?
Would home sharing be better in some way?
I understand the NAS should show up under the shared section in iTunes - I assume that would mean that would mean each user has an iTunes library on their documents?
I have read that there may be corruption issues if users on the different machines try to access iTunes at the same time.
Will there be any issues syncing that various iPods with?
Ugh - sorry for the long post and all the questions.  I am just trying to find the best way to do this.  I wish Apple would put out a best practices document for setups like this.  Thanks in advance.

This is a user to user support forum. Your fellow users can offer solutions or workarounds based on their experience with the application. If you think it should work differently drop a line to iTunes Feedback.
For reasons unknown Apple haven't chosen to allow iTunes to be suspended in one profile and active in another. My recollection is that this applies even if each profile has a different library, although it is some time since I've committed a personal test.
I'm not sure why my suggestion make less sense that your current approach?. As I understand it currently everybody is either signed into their own account when they can do something other than work with iTunes, or they sign into the special iTunes account where they can't access any of their other stuff. You don't have to disable fast user switching. Follow exactly the same steps, but make sure everyone closes iTunes before turning the computer over to another user. Disabling fast user switching helps to enforce that action.

  • How can I have multiple WINDOWS (NOT tabs) with INDEPENDENT content?

How can I have multiple '''windows''' (''not ''tabs) with '''independent''' content?
I used to be able to open separate windows with Firefox, and the content could be completely different in each window. No matter what I did in any window, no OTHER window open at the time, nor any of the content therein, was affected. This is no longer the case and it is extremely frustrating for me.
I do ''not ''like tabs and do not use them. I prefer multiple windows plus I am so used to using them, for so many years now! But with v9.0.1 I suddenly can no longer do what I've always done with my browser without this aggravating problem constantly reminding me that I can't have what I want in firefox anymore.
Or can I? Does anyone have a solution I don't realize exists?
    Thanks,
    Sowelu

AppleScriptObjC can use pretty much everything in the Cocoa API, so yes, it is possible.
Note that a view is not the same as a window, and a window can have multiple views. There are also many ways to implement "tabs";  take a look at some of Apple's applications - they use various mixtures of toolbars, checkboxes, and radio buttons, for example.  An application such as this will be a lot more involved than what you have done so far though, using custom classes and subclassing existing ones, so be prepared to do a lot of reading and researching.

  • Firefox 4 opens multiple windows (15-25) when opening and only once in a blue moon will remember the tabs from the previous session in the first of the multiple windows.

When I open Firefox 4 from either the icon or from a link from e-mail or some other place, multiple windows open up. Usually between 15 and 25 of them. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate on both my laptop and desktop and have the same issue with both. I tried disabling the plug-ins one by one since they were all up-to-date, to no avail. My laptop has an upgraded version of Windows while my desktop has a clean install. I tried uninstalling Firefox 4 and going back to 3 and then the same thing started happening withe v3 when it wasn't before. Only sometimes, on rare occasions, will the first window that opens have my tabs from the previous session. Most times all the windows have one blank tab. The first one I can tell 'cause it does not have the orange Firefox menu button (since I'd chosen to show the Menu Bar) while the first window shows the menu bar. The troubleshooting info is from my laptop only.

Unless the schedule it's running on is every single time I open Firefox (including closing it & reopening it right away), I don't think that's the case. Also, I don't have any of these issues on the PC I switched back to v3.6 on. That one runs smoothly whether I run Ccleaner, registry optimizers, clear the cache & history or whatever. I thought after you first gave me the answer of deleting the session files that they must've got corrupted during the upgrade, but it seems that v4 just doesn't do a good job of retaining or maintaining those files without getting them corrupt or something.
If this is not an issue with everyone & I'm having it on both my PCs, then v4 has an issue with something that I install on my PCs that, I guess, many others don't although I don't know what that could be and I use everything I install or have running. So, I'm just going back to what works without having to dismantle my config one prog at a time to try to find what v4 may be finicky about.
By the way, I did check & couldn't find any cleaners that run automatically on my PCs.

  • When in fullscreen mode, bottom of Firefox window ends where Windows Taskbar would be, were it not in autohide mode.

    Firefox version: 4
    Windows Version: XP-SP3 (automatic updates)
My Windows Taskbar is in autohide mode.
When I launch Firefox in windowed mode and maximize the window, it takes up the entire screen.
When I move my mouse pointer to the bottom of the screen, the Windows Taskbar pops up.
When I select Fullscreen mode in Firefox, the top of the window behaves as it should: Menus disappear, and the toolbar area autohides, reappearing when I move my mouse pointer to the top of the screen.
The bottom of the Firefox window, however, jumps up to where it would be if the Windows Taskbar were not in autohide mode, leaving a black space. While I can move my cursor over this black space, when I reach the bottom of the screen, the Windows taskbar will not unhide, forcing me to use the Windows button if I want to execute some other command.
If I minimize the Firefox window, then select it from the taskbar, it returns to fullsceen mode and takes up the entire screen (no more black space), but I still cannot get the Windows Taskbar to pop up by moving my cursor to the bottom of the screen.
While it may seem nit-picky, this is a dealbraker for me. I set Firefox to run in Fullscreen mode, and expect it to do so properly, without having to go through all of these steps. Furthermore, since I use Windows Start button for everything (my desktop has nothing on it but the Recycle Bin), I often use it while browsing (launching other applications, using the Control Panel, or looking through filesystem, among others).
I am extremely pleased with all other aspects of the browser, right down to the toolbar area not disappearing when my mouse pointer happens to slide off of it after I place my cursor in the search box, and while I would be sad to lose all of these improvements, I will return to Version 3 if I must.
Thank you very much for your time.
    ~David Morrissey~

I'm sorry, it seems I spoke too soon. The original problem is back: Black stripe at the bottom of the screen. :-(

  • Is there a way to get firefox to warn me when exiting with multiple windows open?

When I click File > Exit in the menu, I want firefox to warn me if I have multiple windows open.
I don't want it to warn me about multiple tabs though.
Is there a way to get it to do that?
I would prefer to just hit the red X in the top right corner, which would avoid this problem, However, if it is the only firefox window I have open, then the red X will often not properly shut down firefox exe, so next time I try to launch firefox it won't work and I have to end task on firefox exe! I was told to use File Exit to improve the chances that firefox will properly close, but doing so introduces this new issue.
    thanks

    That doesn't work.
Once I set it to true, if I have one window open with multiple tabs, and try to exit, it comes up with a warning box, which I don't want.
Then if I check it to say 'don't show this again', the next time I run firefox the showQuitwarning setting has been set back to false. So then when I have multiple windows open and I file exit, all firefox shuts down with no warning.
The reason I want this is because I can *see* the tabs of the window I am in when I am clicking on file|exit, so visually, I'm not going to close anything that I didn't mean to close because it's right there visible to me at the top of the screen (the tabs are seen at the top of the screen) in the same area as where I am looking at and clicking File Exit.
But other firefox windows are not visible up there so it is easy to forget that they are open, since a lot of times I don't have any other windows open (if I *always* had other windows open then I would not forget them and be in more of a practice of checking the taskbar for them)
And this is all because I can't hit the red X in the top right corner without increasing the odds of hung firefox processes that don't truly exit (thus making me unable to start another session later without Ending Task which isn't good).
The hanging is daily but random and not reproducible, so it's very difficult to troubleshoot or fix.
