Multiplexing/Burning forever

I've been using iMovie and iDVD for over a year now, and have never run into a problem like this. I am trying to burn a 1 1/2 hour movie to dvd on best quality, using the easter egg, to a disk image/external burner. I've done this at least nine times in the past (same length), and for some reason, it isn't working now. I have been dealing with this issue for over 3 weeks now and it is getting very irritating. My movie is not applying chapter markers appropriately (linking to an earlier marker) and is dropping sound for half the movie.
I have done the following to try to resolve the issue:
Delete .plist files for both iMovie and iDVD
Reinstall both programs
Create a new user account and try it from there
Reinstall the easter egg
Reposition the chapter markers
Extract audio in iMovie and lock it to the clips
Reformat external drive
Updated to QT v7.0.2
Downgraded to QT v6.5.2
Specifications:
eMac 1GHz G4, OS10.3.9, 384MB RAM, 27GB avail on boot disk, 120GB avail on external, QT v6.5.2, iMovie and iDVD v4.0.1.
My media was imported directly from my camera into iMovie (on the external) without actually recording to tape. This has worked a number of times in the past. At this point, I must consider possible data corruption. I exported another movie in iMovie for web streaming and it came out fine. I think the problem is either with iDVD or with my media files, or possibly a security update. HELP!!

I've been using IDVD for a while and have experienced the burning problems you have. Have hope for I have figured out a few things that helped me.
1. Transfer your movie from IMOVIE from IMOVIE program by clicking share- IDVD
2. In IDVD click preferences and put on background scanning and select performance quality if movie is under 60 minutes
3. In custom file on IDVD click statis . Do not start burning until rendering says done.
4. If your having trouble with a file on IDVD start a new one sometime the file gets corrupt Moving picutres and audio in and out while you are working on it. It saves tons of frustaration by just re-doing than trying to fix the old one. The good part is you know exactly what you want so it is easy to re-do.
5. Always have motion off when you are working on the IDVD file
6. If it is an older file before IDVD 4 click advance-scroll down to delete ecoded assets click, it will work better with upgrade IDVD4.0.1
7. Make sure you have double gb of dvd on your hard drive
8. Turn off all program, virus scanners, I even unplugged are cable modem so the cpu can only work on the dvd while burning. Don't run other programs, turn of screen savers and sleep mode while burning
Hope this helps : )

  • Multiplexing/Burning Issues.

    Grrr..iLife '06, what a dissapointment! I now have 3 machines that won't write DVD's..and yes, they did before. <end of rant>
On my Powerbook 1.33 (the only machine where iDVD doesn't almost immediately crash) it will go through a LONG rendering and encoding process and somewhere along the way spit the disk out with the messages: Burning Finished Errors were found during the buring process. The twirl down arrow then says: "The recording device reported the media error: Power calibration area error. (0x73, 0x03.)"
Other times it does the same thing with the message that errors were found in the multiplexing/burning process.
The program then continues 'burning' w/out a disk, is unresponsive and in most cases has to be force quit.
    I've tried 2 different DVD's thinking I might've had a bad one.
    Ideas?
    G5 1.8, G4 PB, eMac   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Thanks for the response. I did all that (from that post earlier today..fonts and such) and believe it or not, the problem appears to be the media. I was trying to use printable Memorex DVD's and they just won't work on this machine... When I switched over to 'regular' Imation 8x DVD-R's.. The disk wrote just fine.
Now I gotta see if I can get this working on the G5 since it seems to like the printable disks just fine.
    Weird stuff.

  • Multiplexing & Burning Error

I am new to idvd and have made one short movie successfully. Now I have one that is 137 min and 4.29gb. I am trying to get it to burn on DVD+R DL. I spent 2 days on it and it pops out the DVD and says multiplexing & burning error. This happened a couple of times. The status still shows 7 plus minutes, but the disc is out. I am not sure what is going on. Any ideas? I reviewed it all and have 21 scenes, and everything seems like it should work. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!

I have found that the DVD+R discs don't work for me, I found that only DVD-R worked. Try that, and if that doesn't work post here again and I'll see what else I can dig up for you

  • Another headache - "problem during multiplexing/burning - buffer underun"

    Hello,
After many iDVD issues, I finally got the burning process of my DVD project.. half way through it spit my DVD out and gave me these errors:
"Errors were found during the burning process:
The recording device reported the illegal request: Buffer underrun. (0x21, 0x02.)
There was a problem during multiplexing/burning."
What is this supposed to mean and how can I just burn my DVD?!
    Thank you
    Chris

It's been awhile since I had this error crop up, but I know 2 things that caused it for me.
    1) Bad DVD media. It happened a lot when I was using some cheap, off brand DVD-R's. More expensive Sony DVD's (white) are much better and more consistent. The time wasted with bad burns from bad DVD media is not worth the time.
    2) It could even be a problem with your DVD burner going bad, but not as likely. I did have one SuperDrive replaced because I started having problems even with good, recommended brands of DVD media. However, try getting some better media first. Don't buy a lot. Try out a small package of DVD-R's or buy a disc from a friend to try out a brand.
Another possibility: Lack of sufficient, free hard drive space. Here's what iDVD 6's help file states:
"When you burn a DVD, iDVD needs temporary space on your hard disk to store the encoded files for your project. To burn your iDVD project to a single-layer DVD disc, you should have 8-10 gigabytes (GB) of free disk space on your hard disk, depending on the size of your project. For double-layer discs, you need 15-20 GB of free disk space."
Apple's support forum describes "buffer underrun" in more detail at:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25750
You might also want to defragment your hard drive (with a 3rd party utiility such as TechTool Pro) so that you don't have a fragmented hard drive when burning a project.
Speed rating of the DVD media- I've seen reports that some SuperDrives work best with media rated the same as it's maximum burn speed (e.g.- 4x, 8x, etc). I would recommend trying to find media that matches your SuperDrive burn speed, or no more than twice the burn speed.
    I hope this helps.
You didn't mention which version of iDVD you were using or which operating system. Sometimes other users have tips for you based on that info.

  • IDVD having problems "during multiplexing/burning"

    Help please:
iDVD is not burning DVDs for me.
it goes through the whole process seemingly fine, then at the end shows the error message: "problem during multiplexing/burning".
    I have a G4 emac. 800 Mhz 10.3.9
external Lacie dvd burner (that burns fine on wife's imac)
I was having this problem earlier, then erased the hard drive to start clean. Didn't seem to help.
I upgraded the Lacie driver, etc too.
    thoughts?

Ah then if Toast has a connection issue and iDVD is having issues when burning, it would appear that your issue is unrelated to iDVD and instead a system or hardware problem. Unfortunately that might be too hard to diagnose here in this forum, at least not with a ton of non-iDVD related back and forth questions and answers.
Did you play the disc image on your computer to see if the titles made it into the disk image? My guess if they didn't make it onto the DVD blank, then they are not in the disk image either, although maybe they were?

  • Problem during burning multiplexing/burning error appers, please help!

I made a movie in imovie that is 1 hour long and contains still pictures and video. It also contains music all the way through it. I exported it to idvd then tried to burn it. It took almost 7 hours for it to get to the burn phase and then it pops up an error saying "problem during multiplexing/burning".
I have made movies in the past and this never has occured, and I have 30GB of HD space.
    Any thoughts??

you can use mp3 ...it will simply take longer to encode though ......

btw ... don't convert mp3 to aiff (that would be doing things backwards). For example, read these links:

  • Multiplexing/Burning for 6+ hours?!!

This is now an iDVD v. 4 project.  I had bad luck with the same one using version 7.0.4 which burned and seemed to play well enough after an endless 6 hours of encoding until one of the movies (3 30 min. movies encoded at 'professional' level for longer length) stopped midway through.  I got a "cannot play disc" message in DV Player and it quit.  This was a project I was supposed to be making a bit of money from....I figure my accumulated time  now comes to less than $2 an hour..thanks Apple!
In iDVD v. 4 I used to be able to make very nice DVD projects.. I have no idea why this is messing up.  After encoding assets for about 5 hours, it's now been at the multiplexing and burning stage for over 6.  I see advice in the discussions to trash the plist and what not, but none of this was something I did in the past, and nowhere in iDVD help do I remember seeing cautionary advice. In this version, I see no option to save as a disc image...maybe there's another way? What is going on?  It's now past bedtime here in NYC, and I'm just going to leave it going, but expect to find a "can't burn disc" error message, and yet another of many coasters so far in the morning.
Yes, I am using Maxell DVD-R media.  I am burning at 4x, and I have 9 GB free space on the Macintosh HD I'm running the project on.  I'm wondering what's going on?  If I quit the project, I seem to run the risk of losing all those hours of encoding.  Maybe the app is corrupted?  The HD Disk Utility check says the drive seems to be OK.  What if I uninstall and then reinstall iDVD?
    I'm wiped out...

    Thanks, OT,
I've seen your similar posts with the same advice.  In idvd 4 there is no File menu option to save as Disk Image, and in fact, I never used to use it.  In v. 7 there is the option, but the resulting DI had problems...see below. I didn't know DVD Player could read a disk image...will try that, too.
When I closed down the above all-night running multiplexing, there was a little message stating that my DVD drive wasn't supported by Apple.  And sure enough, the About This Mac menu said the Pioneer 110D didn't, ether.  Funny, because I used it all the time to copy DVDs.  The thing was, I reconstructed the idvd project in this computer in IDVD 4 after not being able to complete it successfully on the other machine using v. 7.  That machine has been having hard drive issues, and I'm not able to repair with Disk Utility.  I'm going to try installing a new HD and reinstall all the '08 iapps, plus DVD SP 3, which offers even more versatility.
I kind of take exception to Klaus's contention that my G4 and OS 10.4 are obsolete.  The software and machine worked fine, as was intended.  I'm blaming the failing boot drive at this point.  In other words, idvd 3 or 4 did what it was supposed to do, except that later versions like 7 offered more user input.  His point that I ought to have more HD space is well taken, but again, the system I had with my Sawtooth, and it's 20 GB drive produced a good number of dvd projects some years ago.
I also have a '91 Corolla, which runs fine, gets me from points A to B economically and comfortably.  I'm sure there are those who would think it obsolete.

  • Calling Old Toad Multiplexer/burn problems

    Old Toad (and others),
Since you. are. the. man. on this forum, I thought I'd try to get a bit of advice, if you or anyone else can help. This is my first leap into iMovie/iDVD - I've been running Macs for 15 years though. I'm shooting a Canon HDV-30, 24 fps, 1080i. I'm importing and creating an extremely simple project of my son's basketball games. There are no cuts, no monkeying around with video/sound quality: just simple fade transitions between time outs, quarters, etc. I pulled this "large" movie into iDVD - 50 minutes worth, had a single team picture as a slideshow with one mp3 song on top of the slideshow, kept the "best performance" option, and created no chapters (aside from the single one automatically created by iDVD at the start). I get through all of the burn sequence until an error message pops up, 'multiplexer error, unable to complete burn'. That may not be an exact quotation. Most of my six or seven tries the disc is left completely blank. One time, however, I got about 2:53 on the disc. This time mark did not correspond to any transition.
I've repaired my permissions. I have not reinstalled iDVD '08, however. The movie was imported to an external 400 firewire drive. This morning I did get iDVD to burn a disk image onto my desktop (startup drive) and burned that to DVD, but the result was only a series of unix video files. (I have plenty of drive space on all three drives (two internal, one external) - on the order of 80 gbs per.
As you can tell, I'm a complete novice when it comes to knowing what going on 'under the hood' or how to tackle this systematically.
Could you point me in the right direction?

You know, this really requires an extensive explanation as to why iDvd works best from the boot volume and why the pro apps don't need this since they employ one or more scratch discs. I'd offer up more details but I have a Dr. appointment in just 30 mins.
Essentially, if you plan to use 24 fps then you are shooting pro equipment and editing with apple's pro software. (mixing and matching is not good in this situation IMO).
The i-apps are intended for consumers and utilize 25 fps or 29.97.
OT often posts later in the day and sometimes at night. I'm hopeful he'll see this soon and post / add a few comments as well. Good luck on this.

  • Burning Process Stuck On 'Multiplexing & Burning'

I'm trying to burn a DVD and it seems to go through all the stages just fine until step 4 I think it is when it says 'Multiplexing and burning', and the busy bar thing just keeps moving and I left it for like half an hour and it doesn't do anything. I don't hear the disc start to spin or anything. Anyone know what's up?
I've burned DVDs in the past with no real problem, and even one twice as long as this, so I know space shouldn't be an issue...

With my G4, many times I'd start the burning process before heading to bed and often it would be finished in the morning. I'd give it lots more time.
Here are some general hints for success:
Lots of memory helps; and you'll need 10-15 gigs of free space on your main hard drive for scratch space.
Buy good quality disks - I've seen recommendations for Maxell, Sony, Verbatim, TDK and a few others based on testing. I primarily use the first two and usually don't have trouble.
    Give yourself lots of time.
Turn off your screen savers and energy savers; don't let your hard drive go to sleep.
Get your computer healthy and ready for some heavy lifting. (video work could be the hardest job your computer can do) MacJanitor followed by Apple's DiskUtility's Repair Permissions is my routine.
Most of the time iDVD is working, it is encoding (compressing) your video to fit on the DVD. Create an image .img file (patchburn for iDVD 4 and older) and use Toast or Apple's Disk Utility to burn it to disk (saves disks and is a more reliable "Preview"). Burn slower than the highest rated speed of your burner (eg. 1 or 2x on a 4x burner).
I keep my projects under 60 minutes (for highest resolution).
I import into iDVD rather than export from iMovie (fewer errors).
    No other apps open.
Let it encode and burn while you go to bed; it can take awhile, esp. on older Macs.
If you use iDVD for burning the DVD (and don't make a disk image), don't quit iDVD even when the DVD is burned, until you've played the DVD in a regular player (it's much easier to burn another disk and check to see if the problem was a bad disk, than to go back through all that encoding again by quitting iDVD).

  • Burning problems

I have been using iDVD successfully for quite a few years now, and I am having trouble for the first time. I have v. 4.0, and everytime I try to burn it quits as soon as the multiplexing starts, or it will burn the entire content of the video, then open the DVD Player, and iDVD will "quit unexpectedly". So I can only burn one copy at a time, and it takes at least three hours to encode the asset and multiplex/burn. So, not only am I wasting DVD's, it takes forever to burn multiple copies. Please help!

It is easy to forget things or fall into an unexpected trap with iDVD. First make sure there is about 20GB free on the internal HD.
Then I suggest you use Easter Egg or "Hurz and Pfurz", a popular workaround which is available as a free download from
    http://homepage.mac.com/geerlingguy/macsupport/mac_help/pages/15-burn_idvdother.html
    iDVD5 has this built in.
I also suggest you get another free download Mac Sweeper which you will find on http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/Mac-Sweeper.shtml
Now I would recommend the following steps:
    1) Shut down/Restart without any applications running.
    2) Run Mac Sweeper carrying out all the optimize options including repair permissions and, under clean, empty caches.
    3) Launch iDVD and the project
    4) "Burn" a copy to disc to hard disc using the Easter Egg workaround.
    5) Go to bed and have a good night's sleep.
    6) When the run is finished (always for me 1 hour in less than 8 hours) examine the DVD image and play it using the DVD player in the applications folder
    7) If and when satisfied and burn a copy using Disc Utility, full instructions on
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42724
but you just use the second half to burn the DVD.
This approach means you can readily produce multiple copies. I have taken to burning the DVD without any other applications running as I think too much going on may cause bad spots on the disc.

  • IDVD Stage 4 Multiplexing problem resolved.

I think I've resolved (at least one reason) for the 'takes forever' problem with the iDVD multiplexing/burning (stage 4) - which, reading this forum, it seems a lot of other people have problems with also.
After approx. EIGHT HOURS just in stage 4 it finally spit out the tray with the DVD disk burning completed. I then tested the DVD (as I always do) with my TV & DVD player. The DVD was FAULTY! Although the movie started & ran perfectly, the skip facility would not work properly (I'd used chapter markers) - also the fast forward 2x 4x etc. wouldn't work properly & the DVD player timer was not running.
I then decided to play the movie right through (1 hour 17 mins total) - it ran perfect up to the first chapter marker position, where the movie FROZE & I could hear a 'jumping' sound as is it was trying to search. This gave me a clue - luckily I hadn't saved the final changes in the project, so I started from scratch WITHOUT ANY CHAPTER MARKERS. Now stage 4 was only FIFTEEN MINUTES (more normal) & the movie tested PERFECT FROM START TO FINISH! I burned a few more, all timed at 15 minutes & tested O.K. It must be a 'bug' yet I've done many DVDs with chapters & they are fine, so I don't know why. Anyway, I hope this helps some others. By the way, some time ago I downgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.3.4 which resolved a lot of iMovie problems.

    eMac PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I think you did what I was doing. Did you add a
chapter marker at the beginning (within the first few
seconds) of your iMovie? If so, remove it.....iDVD
adds one automatically called "Beginning" (which you
can later change to whatever you want), and it may be
causing a conflict with your chapters. Don't worry
that the first chapter mark in iMovie is really your
    second chapter.
Try it, and let us know if it works.....I'm trying
the same thing, but am still getting other burn
errors that's preventing me from checking to see if
this tips solved my chapter problems.....
Thanks for your reply and YES I DID put a chapter in right at the beginning, so I'll remember your advice in future.

  • Error message when burning HD with iDVD

When i try to burn a HD movie directly from iMovieHD( v. 5,02) with iDVD( v. 5.0.1), i get an error message code OX8002006D, followed by another:
"Burning Finished.---errors were found during burning process."
and "there was a problem during multiplexing/burning"
and the disk is ejected blank.
With a Standard Definition movie, using the same DVD-R or DVD+R disks(4X) and same procedure, i have no problem. The movie was only about 2 minutes long with about 19 GB available.
Anybody out there who knows what's wrong?
    Hans

There are a bunch of folders within your home folder, you may want to decide what exactly you want to back up or not.
Besides your personal folders (Desktop, Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures), you may want to decide whether you need to back up the library folder. The library folder generally contains preferences for most of your applications, and also caches and applications support files. These can become really big in some cases (Mine is more than 8GB, will not fit on a dual layer DVD). And the Library>Caches folder contains temporary files that will change from time to time, this might be the cause of your previous error since the shortcut is no longer valid.
Once you chose your files and make sure they will fit on your blank CD/DVD, you can just do what you did before, drag the folders to a Burn folder, make sure you are not running any other apps, so they won't be modifying the files.
There are programs you can use to backup to CD/DVD, Disc burner like Toast will span across several discs if the data does not fit on one. For a more automated solution, Carbon Copy Cloner (http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html) can backup to disc images which you can then burn to discs. I personally don't know a lot backup programs that provide good support for CD/DVDs, so I'll leave this to other folks.
If you are going to backup regularly, I would recommend spending some money on an external drive. You can find quite a few free software for automated backup and saves money and time on burning CD/DVDs. Plus you have the advantage of being able to boot from the external drive should anything bad happened to your internal one.

  • IDVD 7.1.2 will not burn a iPhoto11 slideshow

Is there a problem between iphoto 11 9.2.1 and iDVD 7.1.2?
I created a slideshow using iphoto and using SHARE IDVD (which the iDVD software was open) it moved the slideshow over to my theme project in iDVD.
I could view and play.  Now I wanted to burn it to a DVD.  The iDVD when through all it processing makes it to Multiplexing & burning.... does the asset parsing, then goes into multiplexing, from there  I get an error message "Multiplexer Error... error during building.... the disk is still untouched...".
So looking at your last download fixes for idvd in july 2011 update was to fix the slideshow problem and it has not.  Is there a problem between iDVD and iPhoto 11?  Will Apple come out with an update, or fix, or a new software that one will have to purchase?
    Waiting on Apple

It appears that there is a missing part of the system:
      Library not loaded:
    /Library/Frameworks/NyxAudioAnalysis.framework/Versions/A/NyxAudioAnalysis
Download and use  Find Any File  to search for NyxAudioAnalysis.  If you find it and it's in the correct location reboot and try iDVD again.  If you don't find that file you can try reapplying the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 updater to see if that will install that file.
