Multiplexing "Muxing" error?

I have made many DVDs from Final Cut projects with no problem until today. What I always do is just export the projects from Final Cut as Quicktime movies, and then drop them into iDVD (their chapter markers become scene selections).
This is iDVD 7.0.4, by the way.
But today, every time I try to save my current 20-min. DVD project as a Disk Image (which I always do first, so I can check it out before burning it to a real DVD) iDVD gets to the Multiplexing stage and then quits with the following error: "Multiplexing Error- There was an error during muxing preparation (project conversion)."
Can anybody tell me what such an error is, and how to correct it?

Well, I tried a quick experiment--I just opened up the Final Cut project and deleted the soundtracks that I had sent out to Sound Studio, amplified the volume, and brought back in.
After those soundtracks were eliminated, I exported the project from FC as a QT movie again and dropped it into iDVD and told iDVD to make me a disk image---and it did it, just fine.
Therefore, the trouble was my amplified sound files. Mystery solved. It was a sound problem.
Anyway, as for using YouTube mp4 videos in Final Cut, I've done it many times before and this is the first problem I've had. As you say, the quality of the video is sometimes terrible with artifacts and pixellization, but these are really just throwaway videos that I show in our history class and then junk. The narration is often more important than the pictures, and the whole idea is just to give the students some appreciation of certain aspects of history. We follow up each video with class discussions.
Now I've just got to figure out how to raise the volume of YouTube videos that are too quiet to hear in Final Cut, even with the audio level line raised to the max in the timeline. Final Cut is so full of features, only a fraction of which I use, that I wouldn't be surprised if there's some filter hidden in the program's menus somewhere that could raise the volume the same way Sound Studio does it. One thing is sure now, I can't use Sound Studio to do it, or iDVD chokes.

Internal Muxing Error - How I Fixed Mine - FYI

FYI: I received the "internal muxing error" message during a build. I thought I'd post what happened, what I found and how I mixed mine in case it helps someone else.
I was building a project using a "project template" that I've used many many times in the past. (I just drop a new menu and new assets into an old project thats been saved without any assets). The project consisted of a menu connected to 4 tracks. Each track contains a 30 min film.
About 70% of the way through I received the "internal muxing error" and the build stopped. This was when muxing Part 3. This happened each time I re-tried the build.
To cut a long story short:
I checked the built project which was 3/4 complete. I had a look at the build log and it indicated which VOB was the last and thus which one had the problem. Oddly enough a VOB for the next track had been created.
In each track I placed 1 second of black, (a special mpeg2 and ac3 assst), at the start of the track,followed by the main asset, followed by 1 second of black again. The always worked and looked good on playback.
I traced the probelm, through some trail and error to the 1 second of black at the end of track 3. eg; removing it resulted in a clean build, putting it back resulted in the build failing.
I wanted to keep the 1 second of black at the end of the track, so I ended up trimming the video asset just enough so that it was about 1/2 second shorter than the audio asset, and adding back the 1 second of black at the end of the track.
Oddly enough, this build worked. I burnt the dvd and it was fine. Everything worked.
I really don't understand what causes the "internal muxing error" message. (I've printed some other posts and will read through them in detail when I get the chance). And I really don't understand how what I did fixed it. And as I've used this "project template" dozens of times in the past I don't understand why it suddenly failed, besides new assets everything was the same, and even the new assets were "standard", nothing new about them.
So there it is. Weird.

Multiplexing & Burning Error

I am new to idvd and have made one short movie successfully. Now I have one that is 137 min and 4.29gb. I am trying to get it to burn on DVD+R DL. I spent 2 days on it and it pops out the DVD and says multiplexing & burning error.This happened a couple of times. The status still shows 7 plus minutes, but the disc is out. I am not sure what is going on. Any ideas? I reviewed it all and have 21 scenes,and everything seems like it should work. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!

I have found that the DVD+R discs don't work for me, I found that only DVD-R worked. Try that, and if that doesn't work post here again and I'll see what else I can dig up for you

Internal Muxing Error

Hey guys,
came across something very interesting today.
for the first time i received this error when building my project.
initially i thought it was a bad VTS, since i was just re-using the same one as a template. i deleted it, created a new VTS and same muxing error.
keep in mind that i was using many, individual encodes, not just one long stream. i figured that one of them was corrupted, but which one was the question, since the error is pretty general.
i thought that maybe the file was corrupted, header info maybe but it was all good, since i know the telltale sign in DVDSP of a corrupt header info or a file.
someone in the DVDSP posts suggested to view the .VOB's in the VIDEO_TS since it still build, but to see where the end of video was (as in scene).
i took the VOB into mpegstreamclip and saw that towards the end, my timecode jumped ahead about 7 frames. i also noted the timecode in mpegstreamclip and crossed referenced it with DVDSP (i had to revert my video stream timecode to 00:00:00:00 in DVDSP, since this is how mpegstreamclip views it). then thats when i saw something amazing!
turns out that the mpx3000 was adding an extra GOP! ONE EXTRA GOP (in my case 15 frames). there was NO audio associated with this mystery GOP. also, it was at the end, NEVER at the head of a file.
i did what is a big no no, i trimmed the file 2 GOP's but had to also trim the audio. i HAD to make sure that the audio was synced to video as well, since this doesnt happen automatically, or create a new, full audio file like the spruce that comforms perfectly in Spruce (sigh).
i saved and compiled again. suffice to say there was a total of 8 files that had ONE EXTRA GOP! i trimmed 4 seconds of video that were associated with nothing!
i did a batch encode on the mpx3000 and for some reason, added 1 GOP to these files. when i went back to check my out points from the batch list, all was good!
i also tested these files in a standalone VTS, and it build just fine. the trouble seem to come when i butted the files next to each other!
i made sure all audio was synced to video, made sure that i had no other errors and i was good to go!
just thought i would share!

I have had similar issues in the past
Sometimes using MPEGAppend cured it
A couple of times I zoomed in as much as possible on the timeline and actually saw gaps in the timeline which cured it.
And yesterday ran into real weird one when proofing the DVD on a set top. The counter would run wild back and forth between numbers on a section and tons of stutters and stop. So I figured bad burn, tried again and same thing.
Sure enough when I went back to playing in DVD Player on the Mac and in DVD AE it would crash them both. Re-encoding the file cured the ills, but man this stuff gives me stomach aches. Just when you start feeling comforable with workflows and things all clicking, BAM. Kept the bad burn to look at more at some point
But I guess this is what makes ithis all fun

Multiplexer prep error with audio

I am trying to burn a DVD and when I click 'burn' the message:
multiplexer prep error pops up saying that there is not enough free disk for encoding the remaining assets. When I remove the motion (audio) I am able to burn the DVD, but would like the music as well. My project is showing that it is only 15:35 minutes long.
Another question: I would like to be able to burn a DVD from a DVD - how do I do this? Can I do this?

How much free space on your hard drive? You should have 20GB+ free.

What is "Internal Muxer Error" - How to fix it???

I'm trying to burn a simple/basic project: 5 short films (one 15min, the others under 4min) that I put into a template - and I have no additional menus save the first. I have no transistions or anything else complicated. Just the menu and the movies.
Here's the backstory: I had built this same project before, successfully burned at least 10 DVD's of it, and then moved it from my hard drive to my external hard drive. When I went back later to burn some more, I re-connected the assets with the project and tried to burn again - only to get this "Internal Muxer Error" that stops the building/formatting. I went through all the preferences and all other options - I retraced my steps as best I could, to no avail. So I resorted to moving my assets back onto my hard drive and I re-created my project from scratch.
And I'm still getting this "Internal Muxer Error" in the "build" stage of the burn process - even though I did the same things to this new project that I had done when I first started.
What is this error and how can it be fixed? I noticed a thread about the error below, but I didn't understand a thing in that discussion. And my project is different from that one because I am not using multiple angles or anything spiffy. I think I'm making about the most basic project you can come up with.
Any help/suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you so much in advance.

Multiplexer preparation error message

After transferring my iDVD 3.01 app from one G4 to another, I have prepared files on that machine for creating a DVD. When attempting to burn, I get an error message: "Multiplexer preparation error: Not enough free disk space for encoding the remaining assets"
This is puzzling, as the sole movie file is 11 GB and it resides in a partition with nearly 10 GB of remaining space available. I tried deleting the file from the iDVD project and moving the file to an empty 38 GB partition and then reimporting it to the project - same message.
I should add that as there is insufficient space on the Mac HD (startup disk) I have installed the 1.+ GB iDVD app on the aforementioned partition, as well as the project files. The 2nd G4 is old, and the startup disk is only 20 GB, though of course I've since added more and larger internal disks.

That's pretty clear isn't it? Not enough free space. Creating DVDs requires LOTS of free hard disk space!

Did you recreate the iDVD project in the larger partition? It's probably presently stored in the Documents folder on the boot partition.

Mac OS X likes to have from 10% to 15% of a hard disk kept free for OS use ( I assume this means the partition that contains the OS).

A unique Internal Muxer Error problem

I'm using DVD Studio Pro 4.1.1
I've searched through threads and have found that people have gotten this message, but never under the circumstances which I got it at.
I have a stand alone DVD recorder that records DVD-RAM discs. I was hoping to record my favorite TV show and then rip it to my computer so that I could:
1. Cut out the commercials without having to sit and watch it, I could just cut out the commercials using MPEG Streamclip
2. Get more on video on my DVD
So, I ripped the MPEG2 from the DVD. It was recorded in XP mode, which fits 1 hour. Since the show is 30 minutes, I figured I could fit 3 episodes on a disc (I'm very picky about video quality) because without commercials they'd be about 20 minutes each.
I used Toast Titanium 8 to rip the video from the DVD-RAM disc, and it rips it as a mpeg2. Now, I know DVD Studio Pro 4 cannot handle MPEG2 video that is already muxed, so I demuxed the video and the audio. I pull them into DVD Studio Pro without any issue and got everything set. I just have a basic menu, no chapter markers for each title, nothing. The total file size is a little larger than allowed, but that's okay cause I can just compress it when burning it with Toast, that way the disc is 4.36gb at the highest bitrate possible.
When I go to build though I get the dreaded Internal Muxer Error.
The video is encoded at 8.9mbps, and the audio is AC3 192kbps.
Now, I would just use Toast to make the DVD but Toast keeps wanting to re-encode it because I don't think it will burn anything about 8mbps.
Heres the info of the m2v file from Quicktime:
MPEG2 Video, 640 x 480
FPS: 29.94
8.94 mbits/sec
Could the FPS be the issue? I mean, the DVD RAM disc plays fine on my DVD Recorder.
Does anyone have any suggestions? If it's encoded at too high of a quality, is there a way to lower the bitrate slightly? I've worked in video for a while but have never had to take a mpeg2 video file and re-encode it, usually any re-encoding I'd do with DVD2Xone or Toast Titanium, using their disc image compressing. When re-encoding the mpeg2 itself with Toast the quality was bad and it was filled with interlace looking lines, except bigger.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It may not seem like much to you but what your doing is illegal and someone (maybe me :)) will be losing money on something they put much work into - really.

Muxing error

Hello All. This my problem. Working in fcp created project close to 4.5 GB. Exported to QT then compressed using DVD setting for 150 min. in order to send to DSP. When I pulled into DSP, and created menu and chapters I began to build. I received a muxing error. So as I began to work backwards. I discovered the orginal quicktime movie audio lagged in various spots. I began to work further back and then tried to make each chapter into individual m2v and ac3 files. I then tried different combinations of each chapter to find where the muxing error occured. Once I determined the chapters that had muxing errors I went back to the FCP project and checked each audio setting of clips and audio. All were the same. I've never had a muxing error. We did change cameras half way through the project, but they were the same Canon and same settings (I believe). In fact we've never changed the audio on the camera. Any advise would be great.

After I exported as a quicktime, I then opened with compressor. I used 150 best quality for dvd. Somewhere between FCP and a qt movie, the audio began to lag. I can only combine a few chapters in order NOT to get the muxing error once inside DSP.

Interal Muxer Error (Again)

So I'm trying to build a rather large DVD and I'm getting the dreaded Internal Muxer Error. I've read through the other threads asking for help with this problem and turned up nil so far. Hopefully someone can help me ASAP as I'm fast approaching a deadline.
The backstory...I had 23 DVDs that were submitted for a film festival. My job is to create one DVD melt that can serve as a screener for the judges. I used Cinematize 2.0 to extract the .m2v and .aif files for what was to go on the screener. I converted the .aifs to .ac3 with Compressor. Each is about 10 minutes or less. The total size of all the files is 8.69 GB when viewing info in Finder.
When added to DVDSP the total disc size actually says 9.5 GB. I have 2 tracks, with each having about half the clips, so 14 clips and 11 chapters in track 1 and 12 clips/12 chapters in Track 2. I have two menus that link to each of the chapters. Two VTS folders each with a menu and the track it links to.
I know I can't fit the reported 9.5 on a dual layer disc (i have the proper media and drive) but I wanted to create a build of it and then use DVD2oneX2 to shrink it down so it would fit on a Dual Layer DVD+R. Since my build keeps cancelling at about 14% I haven't even gotten this far. I tried eliminating all the chapter markers and that didn't help. Have dumped the PAR folders, nada. Fix invalid markers on build is checked in Prefs. Assets on external firewire, have built to both external and interal with same results. Here is the log:

I've begun the process of eliminating assets to find a potentially corrupt one. So far I think I've localized it. It cancels on the 4th chapter, which is the 5th clip in the timeline. After that everything builds okay, so I know there are no problems in my second VTS.
What's the best approach to fix my problematic asset? Hopefully after I do that there won't be other corrupt assets further down the timeline that I find out about. I guess I could add all the other ones in there and see if it builds okay, then I would know if it was completely isolated to that asset. Will try that now and hope it works! I'll be up all night, so if anyone is around, please chime in, thanks!
EDIT: I put my other assets in, minus the 4th one which I think to be corrupt, and it gave me the error again. Now I think that perhaps its not that asset, but anything beyond that certain point on the DVD. What kind of problem might I be having in a specific point on the Track? I know I read earlier something about faulty GOP structure/boundaries and an easy way to fix them. FWIW, the point in the timeline that the build can't seem to get past is around 00:30:48:07. I know frames are irrelevant in DVD spec, but the more info the better I guess.
EDIT #2: Ugh, I just tried making the track ~equal to the length of the failed build, but only using the assets that were in the timeline that built successfully (AKA known to not be corrupt). It cancelled. This gives credence to the idea that its that particular point in the timeline causing the issue and maybe not the assets afterall. Hopefully I've narrowed it enough for someone to swoop in with a fix. hopefully.

Get Internal Muxer Error

I have completed many copies of my DVD and have finally corrected all the errors that I can find and now when I go to Build in DVD Studio Pro in will not finish. It gives me an Internal Muxer Error. I thought this was just the audio, so I eliminated all the audio and it still does it. The main changes I have made are corrections in spelling. This is about 2 hours long, but is made of 16 separate timelines all put on one track. Does anyone know what is happening?

You should be able to hear the AC3 file
Can you hear the aif file play in Quicktime Player or iTunes?
Also double check the AC3 settings - A data rate of 160 or 192 is usually good, you should set Dialog Normalization to -31, preprocessing to none

Double check to make sure the audio is in the right track (it can happeen) and
make sure you did not place the audio in an audio track that you somehow disabled
I had this happeen recently on some AC3 files thaat I used in a DVD SP 3 project - no sound but it worked in DVD SP 4.
Did you do the troubleshoot - repair permissions, delete prefs, etc.?

Stage 4 Multiplexing - Media error in Power calibration 0x73,0x03

Try to burn a DVD the project I made. Everything is fine until it goes to stage 4 Multiplexing & Burning - the system shows a Media Error in the Power Calibration 0x73,0x03 when this come up it will eject the dvd. I never had a problem like this. System always worked fine. Any help on this? Thank you, John

Multiplexing Error
Multiplexing error is a very complex problem due to many things (long long list following) - one common but not obvious reason is that material on the iDVD menu goes outside the TV-Safe area (or just touching it).
So first - turn on TV-Safe area and move any object well inside of this.
Wide screen stretched - usually (as I think) it is due to making a 4x3 movie in a 16x9 wide-screen project OR the other way around. This forces one to on flat-screen TV (or other) set the presenting view right - My has 4x3, wide-screen, zoom and auto-wide-screen and I have to switch this by my remote for some DVD I've made "wrong" way.

A. Using strange letters in video project name e.g. +,/; etc. keep to a-z and 0-9 strange letters in project name e.g. +
as described by Donnyboy69. Does the title of your project have any symbols or decimal points in it. If so, that is why you are getting the error. I had a project that had a + sign which caused the same problem. I renamed it without the symbol and low and behold, it worked.
B. Location of Chapters
• Can’t be at start or end of movie (Skip first/start one - iDVD sets this by it self. At the End - no need)
• Not in a transition (or within 2-3 seconds from it)
Important when from iMovie HD6 or previous - Now also observed when using FCE 4

Back again. Here is what I have found to work. I also have and use a LaCie DVD-R/RW DL external drive and a LaCie external hard drive as well. Since yesterday I have tried a few ways to burn a themed iDVD project having four 56 minute movies on it, amounting to 226 minutes onto a DVD DL disc, capacity 240 minutes. Apple tech support really didn't know what to do but gave me a very good tip. I had two options left. Apple tech support's tip was to try disc image. One of the replies on a thread with this subject said not to, but my experience today is good. Put your project onto "Burn to disc image," under "iDVD, file." Yesterday encoding took me 23 1/2 hours. Overnight for iDVD disc image, encoding took 21 1/2 hours (again) while I slept. This morning I tried to copy/burn disc image to a DVD with Roxio Toast 7, and it stopped near the end of the burn with some kind of "error" message. So then I tried Utilities> Disc Utility> Burn icon, and followed it through. Be sure to click the DVD DL drive in the window "Burn disc in.". I had one other problem though. At the end of a 46 minute copy, it started to verify, and at the end of verify it rejected the burn. So I tried again, and when "verify" appeared, I clicked on "Skip." The disc finished burning and is doing fine and well. A long and tortuous process, but at last something works. I made several additional copies using Disc Utility. Best wishes. Chuck, Chicago.

(Not a 'guy' but I will answer!)
First, I do not think that mixing wide-screen and standard makes a difference in iDVD.
Second, you should use a better brand of DVD disk. Also, many of us have experienced fewer problems on playback with DVD-R disks. Recommended brands here are Verbatim, Maxell and Taiyo Yuden. Memorex and TDK are not consistent and may not give you a correct burn. They apparently have fewer layers in the composition of the disk. I have always used Verbatim DVD-R disks and have not had any burn problems.
Also, choose a slower burn speed, 4x or less.
Third, to determine if the iDVD project will burn properly, create a disk image file (from within iDVD, go File->Save as Disk Image) and test it. Mount the disk image and then open DVD Player (in Applications) and view your project. If it plays correctly, you can then burn the actual DVD disk from the disk image file using Disk Utility.

I did everything I've seen suggested, but a friend (who used to be an Apple Genius) suggested that I do a safe reboot (by holding down the shift key until you see the spinning gear on gray background, then release, then restart when your start-up screen appears).
It worked, and I got a clean burn from iDVD.

Well, I finally got it, and it was odd enough to post here incase anyone looks this topic up again. Many things were tried, including burning the unedited film, the edited film without titles and chapter markers, abbreviating the chapter markers in case length was the issue (remember the old iMovie used to truncate them when moving to iDVD?). In the process, I noticed that one, and only one, chapter marker was on the same line as the title marker. All the others were on the line above. The only way I seemed able to change that was to clip a few seconds of film. After that last clip, the offending marker took a place on the line above, as were all the others. That run published, compiled completely and burned. That's one for the books.

To add my experience with Multiplex Errors using iDVD (7.0.4), I recently created two iDVD projects
Video from both passed from FCE 4.01 with chapters
One project worked fine in creating disk image file
The other gave Multiplex Errors
I tried suggestions to remove special characters and no chapter marks at beginning, but nothing worked
Note that I've used iDVD for dozens of projects and this is first time I've run into Multiplex Errors
Anyway, for problem project, I tried an experiment where I removed all chapters in FCE and passed to new iDVD project
This time multiplex errors gone
So had something to do with chapters
So now I tried numerous experiments to remove individual chapters and try again creating disk image with new iDVD project
After numerous tries, I was able to narrow problem down to 1 "Bad" chapter mark

When I removed "bad" chapter mark (and others in), no multiplex error
As a final experiment, I moved "bad" chapter mark about 5-10 sec's beyond original point and passed to iDVD, the multiplex errors now magically went away and I was able to finally create my disk image.
I have no idea why this worked, but thought I'd mention here in case someone else runs into similar problem.

In addition to Bengt's fine advice, burning errors can occur if you have located any of your menu buttons wholly or partly outside of the safe TV viewing area. Go to your main project menu, then click on View/Show TV Safe Area, to check. Drag into the safe viewing area any buttons that are outside the safe viewing area.

Multiplex Error-There was an error during muxing preparation
One thing that worked for me was to export the video w/o chapter markers as a self contained movie (thereby not loosing the edits & etc). Then make a new FCE project and import that movie into a new sequence and add the chapter markers. I've used "-", "&" and "," with no problem in the chapter names. Removing the markers or exporting without them did solve the problem but renaming them with just numbers 1,2,3....5, did not solve the problem and since this problem seems to happen with with iMovie as well, it would suggest the problem is in the video or audio and in combination with the chapter markers iDVD just can't handle it. The only other possibility is that both iMovie and FCE share the same or similar chapter marker code that some how is corrupting the markers.
Summary - What to try
1. Chapters
• Only A to Z and 0 to 9 in chapter title
• No Chapter mark at very beginning of movie
• No Chapter mark in or within 2 seconds from any transition in movie
2. TV-safe area for buttons (no one outside this)
3. Safe re-boot
4. No other external devices connected - that are not needed
SDMacuser adds to this
• On #4 ... No ext. devices. Some think this applies mainly to ext. FW. Not the case. Also applies to ext. USB2 as well (not to mention flash drives too).
Do not leave 3rd party devices / camera / camcorder plugged in unless it is being used with iDvd's One Step process. Certain web cams can trigger this also (especially ones with added features like LED light/s that draw additional power from the FW or USB bus).
5. Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-up hard disk
6. Make a DiskImage first - reduces where problem originates
7. Trash iDVD pref. file
8. Make a new iDVD project
9. Movies in project with same aspect ratio e.g. 4x3 or 16x9
10. No other programs/applications running during iDVD process. e.g. Internet, screen & energy savers

Muxer error on WLS shutdown on Solaris 8

Hi,
We're running WLS 5.1.0 (sp9) on Solaris 8 with JDK 1.2.2_07. When we shut WLS
down we get the following muxer ThreadDeath errors at the end of the shutdown:

WLS is the onle process using these ports so it shouldn't hit this problem. Our
only recourse is then to reboot the server itself after which WLS starts okay.
Obviously we don't want to have to reboot the server everytime we shut down WLS.
Has anyone else encountered this problem? Any help greatly appreciated.

Problem during burning multiplexing/burning error appers, please help!

I made a movie in imovie that is 1 hour long and contains still pictures and video. It also contains music all the way through it. I exported it to idvd then tried to burn it. It took almost 7 hours for it to get to the burn phase and then it pops up an error saying "problem during multiplexing/burning".
I have made movies in the past and this never has occured, and I have 30GB of HD space.
Any thoughts??

you can use mp3 ...it will simply take longer to encode though ......

Multiplexer/burning error

I'v used idvd many a time but this time idvd goes right through it's process (rendering etc) and as its starts to burn to dvd a window scroll's down saying "BURNING FINISHED, Errors were found during the burning process. The Error -34506 was reported. Multiplexer error, There was a problem during Multiplexing/burning"
