Multiprocessing taking ages to skip existing frames

Hello
Just recently got a new system and am new to multiprocessing.
8 cores, 24GB RAM, Windows 64bit Ultimate
Running After Effects CS5.
I am rendering out PSD sequences.
If I turn MP on and give it 5 cores to work with it will take an age to skip existing frames. It skips 5 at a time and takes almost as long as if it were actually rendering the frames freshly.
If I turn MP off then it skips the frames like lightning! But obviously just rendering 1 at a time.
Am i missing some blantantly obvious setting somewhere?
Any help would be much appreciated and this issue has effectively removed the possibility of sleep for me for the next couple of days!!

Thanks!
I am currently doing a render right now so cannot test but I think it also exhibits this behaviour even when using stills in a 3d comp with nothing but masks applied.
Fingers crossed though it is a rogue effect somewhere there that I can eliminate.
On a complete side note do you know of an equivalent plugin effect to Shadow/Highlight? I use it a lot but it knocks out MP which is a little frustrating.

  • Adobe After Effects CS6 takes FOREVER to lock existing frames before rendering

    My After Effects CS6 locks up for 3 minutes "Locking Existing Frames" before it even begins to start rendering, every time I need to preview anything - even at the lowest possible quality.
    The render goes perfectly normal - it is not the rendering that is the problem - it is the "Locking Existing Frames" process BEFORE rendering that freezes up my computer for 3 minutes, and ruining my life.
    I am using Adobe After Effects CS6 on a Mac Book Pro with a 2.9 GHz Core i7 processor (2 cores) and 8 GB of RAM.
    Please help me understand what is happening when it is "Locking Existing Frames," and what some solutions could be to reduce the amount of time it takes to do this.
    ALSO: I have scoured the Web for hours looking for the answer to this problem, and to this point it has never been solved.  If you can solve this issue, Adobe should give you a promotion and $1 million.

    Hi Rick and Greg,
    Thanks for the quick responses.  Below are all the details to all your questions.  Also - just to emphasize again - my rendering goes super awesomely fast.  It is not the rendering.  It is the "Locking Existing Frames" process before the rendering that is ruining my life.
    FREE MEMORY:
    This is brand new Mac Book Pro with hardly anything stored on it.
    The 8 GB of RAM is split into 2 memory slots, each with 4GB of RAM
    3RD-PARTY CODECS:
    I am not aware of any third-party codecs in this system.  I imported some fonts (ITC Franklin Gothic) and some video files (see below), but I am not aware of any third-party codec installed on this system.
    DISC CACHE:
    My Disc Cache is enabled
    My maximum disc cache size is 69 GB
    I do not have a seperate "fast hard drive" or "SSD" seperate from my main hard drive, where I store my footage.
    MPEG SOURCE FILES:
    If by source files, you're asking about the video files I imported:
    2 MP4s (5 sec. each)
    3 QuickTime .mov (3 sec. each)
    1 Audio-only FLV. (2 minute background music throughout video; used to be a Premiere working file)
    MULTIPROCESSING
    Turned off, but still locks up forever before rendering.
    ADDITIONAL FUN FACTS:
    Here are some additional observations that might help:
    It doesn't just take a long time to start rendering; it freezes my entire computer for the duration of the "Locking Existing Frames" process - putting my entire life on hold for 3 minutes, every time I need to preview a minor detail... It's a nightmare.
    The video is 1 min. 45 sec. long so far, and has 15 sec. to go.
    The video is comprised of 99 percent motion graphics, and 1 percent actual footage (Occupy Wall Street hates my footage)
    The complexity in this video is that there are a lot of compositions inside of compositions inside of compositions, but even when I go to the very beginning of the first comp - where the only animation is a line being drawn with the "Stroke" effect - it still takes 3 minutes to "Lock Existing Frames."
    Again... The rendering goes super fast after the "Locking Existing Frames" process.  The problem is NOT with the rendering.  The problem is the "Locking Existing Frames" process BEFORE the rendering starts.
    This is my job and I can't do efficiently until I solve this problem, so I will be very responsive until we can identify the issue.
    Thanks again for all your helpful responses!

  • Wine is taking ages to load

    Wine is taking ages to load in my machine. When i run winecfg, for exemple, it takes about 10min to show me a window.
    $ winecfg
    wine: creating configuration directory '~/.wine'...
    Failed to open the service control manager.
    -> hangs here for about 10min
    I already enabled (and disabled) the DRI module in xorg.conf, but it didint helped anything. Delete the .wine folder is not the solution either because im having this problem since i instaled wine (but i erased the folder, anyway).
    $ wine --version
    wine-0.9.30
    So ... any tips?

    I have the same problem as you. I installed wine through pacman and when I do 'winecfg' , I have to wait a really long time until it loads. I don't understand why this is so. In all of the other linux distributions that I tried, wine started up quite fast (gentoo, ubuntu, zenwalk, fedora core, etc) Could someone please tell us why it takes a long time for wine to open. Thank you.
    My WINE version is wine-0.9.33
    PS: I am not sure if this would be the cause, although I don't know why it would do anything but, I am running the 32 bit Arch Linux on a 64 bit machine, and this is because I need to use wine for a certain something that I have to do for my school, so I don't want to use Arch64. I know that it is possible to get wine to work in 64 bit Arch, but I have no clue how to update the package along with the rest of the system, and I can't seem to get a chroot environment to work.

    I really need your help. I'm 14.
    I really need to put new music on my iPod and I have plugged it into my computer and its taking ages to back-up and it wont let me do anything until its done. It will take over 3 hours if it keeps on going like this. Please help me. I don't know what's wrong with it.
    It might be because I haven't backed it up in a while but the reason I haven't is cause it takes this long! Anyone know what to do?

  • Universal Worklist items open in new window instead of existing frame

    After our recent upgrade we noticed that workitems in Universal Worklist open in new window instead of existing frame.  Do you know if there is a system or universal setting to make all the workitems open in existing frame?  I know we can change the settings for parameters launchInNewWindow and openInNewWindow to "no" in XML files to fix this.   However, my concern is that I would need to do this for each and every task we use.  (still doable but wondering if there is simpler solution)
    Example:
        <ItemType name="uwl.task.webflow.TS12300097.SAP_R3_CUSTOM_DEV" connector="WebFlowConnector" defaultView="DefaultView" defaultAction="launchWebDynPro" executionMode="default">
          <ItemTypeCriteria systemId="SAP_R3_CUSTOM_DEV" externalType="TS12300097" connector="WebFlowConnector"/>
          <Actions>
            <Action name="launchWebDynPro" groupAction="" handler="SAPWebDynproLauncher" returnToDetailViewAllowed="yes" launchInNewWindow="yes" launchNewWindowFeatures="resizable=yes,scrollbars=yes,status=yes,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no,directories=no">
              <Properties>
                <Property name="WebDynproApplication" value="LeaveRequestApprover"/>
                <Property name="WebDynproDeployableObject" value="sap.com/ess~lea"/>
                <Property name="newWindowFeatures" value="resizable=yes,scrollbars=yes,status=yes,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no,directories=no"/>
                <Property name="openInNewWindow" value="yes"/>
                <Property name="display_order_priority" value="5"/>
              </Properties>
              <Descriptions default=""/>
            </Action>
          </Actions>
        </ItemType>

    We downloaded uwl.standard.xml from UWL admin.  Made a copy and renamed file.  Changed all "launchInNewWindow" from "yes" to "no".  Uploaded new file in UWL admin.  Re-registered systems, cleared cache.  Not sure what exact line changed the behavior but the workitems no longer open in new window.
    We are still experimenting with file in our sandbox environment.

    The total density number for the MKT_OP_DBF.M_ORIGIN_NB column don't look very good:
         Range cell density:           0.0000034460903826
         Total density:                0.0053334921767125
    Notice the total density value is 3 magnitudes larger than the range density ... which can indicate a largish number of duplicates.  (NOTE: This wide difference between range cell and total density can be referred to as 'skew' - more on this later.)
    Do some M_ORIGIN_NB values have a large number of duplicates?  What does the following query return:
    =====================
    select top 30 M_ORIGIN_NB, count(*)
    from   MKT_OP_DBF
    group by M_ORIGIN_NB
    order by 2 desc, 1
    =====================
    The total density can be used to estimate the number of rows expected for a join (eg, TRN_HDR_DBF --> MKT_OP_DBF).  The largish total density number, when thrown into the optimizer's calculations, may be causing the optimizer to think that the volume of *possible* joins will be more expensive than a join in the opposite direction (MKT_OP_DBF --> TRN_HDR_DBF) which in turn means (as Jeff's pointed out) that you end up table scanning MKT_OP_DBF (as the outer table) because of no SARGs.
    From your description it sounds like you've got the necessary indexes to support a TRN_HDR_DBF --> MKT_OP_DBF join order. (Though it wouldn't hurt to see the complete output from sp_helpindex for both tables just to make sure we're on the same sheet of music.)
    Without more details (eg, complete stats for both tables, sp_help for both tables - if you decide to post these I'd recommend posting them as a *.txt attachment).
    I'm assuming you *know* that a join from TRN_NDR_DBF --> MKT_OP_DBF should be much quicker than what you're currently seeing.  If this is the case, I'd probably want to start with:
    =====================
    exec sp_modifystats MKT_OP_DBF, M_ORIGIN_NB, REMOVE_SKEW_FROM_DENSITY
    go
    exec sp_recompile MKT_OP_DBF
    go
    -- run your query again
    =====================
    By removing the skew from the total density (ie, set total density = range cell density = 0.00000344...) you're telling the optimizer that it can expect a much smaller number of joins for the join order of TRN_HDR_DBF --> MKT_OP_DBF ... and that may be enough for the optimizer to use TRN_HDR_DBF to drive the query.
    NOTE: If sp_modifystats/REMOVE_SKEW_FROM_DENSITY provides the desired join order, keep in mind that you'll need to re-issue this command after each update stats command that modifies the stats on the M_ORIGIN_NB column.  For example, modify your update stats maintenance job to issue sp_modifystats/REMOVE_SKEW_FROM_DENSITY for those special cases where you know it helps query performance.

    Lost my I phone and got a new one today. I've restored it from iCloud and got it working. My apps are taking ages to load though. They say waiting, but have now been like that for 2 hours. Help please?!

    Try This...
    Close All Open Apps... Sign Out of your Account... Perform a Reset... Try again...
    Reset  ( No Data will be Lost )
    Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
    Wait for the Apple logo to Appear...
    Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... ( But can take Longer...)

  • How can I increase existing frames?

    Hi,
    I have 8 movie clips on my stage with 25 frames each. Now, I would like to extend tha length of each movie frame to 100. How can I do that?
    Thanks.
    And also please let me know how to decrease the existing frames as well when required.

    to add frames:  right click on frame 100 and click insert frame or insert keyframe or insert empty keyframe.  if you select all the frames (press and drag) in all the layers, you can do this once to add frames to all the layers you want to extend.
    to remove frames:  right click and click remove frame.

  • "Locking existing frames" very slow

    When RAM previewing in the latest CC 2014, it says "Locking Existing Frames" for about 5-10 seconds every time, even if all the frames in the work area are already rendered.  Sometimes the green bar indicating rendered frames disappears immediately after hitting RAM preview again.
    I can't seem to reproduce the problem in another project.  I have 64 GB of RAM in my 2012 Mac Pro and an SSD for my disk cache (which I've also tried turning off with no effect).  An old post on here said people had this issue with CS4 and it was usually fixed by turning off audio and/or video layers.  This did not help.  I deleted all footage and audio so it is just two precomps with illustrator files and shape layers mostly.  Some 3D layers, but nothing crazy.  If I RAM preview the precomps they don't have this problem, it's just in the main comp where I have them sequenced together.  The main comp I'm trying to render is a bit long (2+ minutes) but I tried trimming it down to 10 seconds and this didn't help much.  I have Open GL and Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously off as well.  I tried duplicating the comp and when that didn't work I imported the project into a new, clean project file.  No luck.
    Anyone else having this problem and found a solution?  I'm open to any ideas.

    Thanks for the response, Rick.  I'm on OSX 10.9.5 and AE CC 2014.1.1 Version 13.1.1.3.
    I actually already deleted all of the footage out of the main comp and out of the two precomps I left in there.  The footage I had in there before is Quicktime 1080 ProRes 4444 using RGB+A which I've used many times before without this issue.  There are no audio files in there either.
    I am doing some character animation and other stuff with Illustrator CS6 files and shape layers.  There are some nulls and solids and quite a few expressions for the character rigs (IK, etc).  Some 3D layers and cameras are involved.  I'm using very few effects- mostly fills and tints and the Puppet Tool.
    Anything else you need to know?

  • Skipping/droped frames on print to video

    I have a ~5min project I put to tape, I want to know if there are any settings that can be done to the computer to maximize its power, such as screensaver, power settings, etc, or is it more a FCE settins isse. I have it on "safe play" and high video quality. I get a few instances where it hangs and skips. I will ultimately put it on DVD. Not sure if the tape issue would apply to the DVD as well.

    There could be lots of reasons for skips, dropped frames, etc. Start with this - make sure that you have done both of the following to your sequence -
    Sequence > Render All > Both
    Sequence > Render Only > Mixdown
    Then save your project and reattempt print to video.
    Also, I have found PTV fairly problematic and long ago switched to just playing the timeline out to tape. You can't do device control that way, but that's a minimal inconvenience.
    When you are ready to export for DVD, you want to Export as Quicktime Movie, not as Quicktime Conversion. De-select the "Make Movie Self-Contained" option if iDVD is on the same computer as FCE.
    And yes, when you are working with video, you do want to turn off your screensaver, display sleep, computer sleep, HD sleep, Appletalk, other apps, etc. - anything that would otherwise take attention from the cpu, controllers or memory.

  • Taking ages to delete user account on macbook pro?!

    Hi,
    I'm deleting an old user off my macbook pro and setting it up for another user, however it is taking AGES (25minutes so far....) to delete. The System Preferences won't let me quit as it says it's still working and under the account it does say "Deleting account" However I now cannot click or highlight this account.
    I'm not convinced it's still working as it's taken so long. Is this a normal length of time to wait?
    Thanks

    I was uploading a 15 GB file to creative cloud, it's taking ages, so I decided to send it by mail.

    The FAQ is at http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/creative-cloud-connection-faq.html#id_74925
    Is there a file size limit?
    With Creative Cloud Connection preview, you can upload files up to 5 GB. If you attempt to upload anything larger, you can see some unexpected errors.
    With the Creative Cloud website, you can upload files up to 1 GB. If you attempt to upload anything larger, you can see some unexpected upload failures.

    Did you check your security software (firewall)?
    A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
    Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process.

  • Why is rendering "Multiple frames simultaneously" so slow when "Skip existing files" is enabled?

    Hi,
    I've tried rendering several comps (usually HD res, some 4k) with these settings both with networked computers and on just one computer and it always seems to take much longer to render.  Mostly, AE seems to stall when it tries to figure out what frames to skip (from what I gathered).  I've also tried many memory/processor settings using Adobe's recommendations below.
    http://blogs.adobe.com/toddkopriva/2010/10/please-try-recommended-memory-settings-for-afte r-effects-cs5-and-give-feedback.html
    Any idea why this may be?  We really wanted to take advantage of the many cores and RAM our machines have in our studio.  We're using Mac OS 10.6.4 mainly on Mac Pros and AE CS5.
    Anyone have any good benchmarks for this?
    Regards,
    Jason

    Hi Todd,
    Wow, thanks for looking into this. I thought I was crazy or simply nobody cared since there were no replies.  Good to know that Adobe is aware of the bug and hopefully they will fix it in the next update.

  • Slow motion is skipping a frame help !!

    I am trying to make a skate edit when I slow motion a trick then let it play in regular time the end of slow motion skips plenty of frames what do I doooof

    Not a particularly complete answer ... ...
    though from what you've stated it's not a particularly capable machine. These programs are resource/hardware intensive.
    To "render" a timeline, you select a section, right-click, and from the options that pop up choose "render" that section. It means that PrPro will create a "preview" for that area to use in playback, though any time you change anything on that bit you'll need to render it again.
    NOT the same as render-out meaning to export out for other use.
