Multitasking Problems

Whenever I have say 5 apps "running" in the background, and they have been sitting there for let's say and hour, when I go to close them out, one (usually Phone.app) will make my whole phone crash. I will press the red X, and within 30 seconds, the phones display will drop out and the phone will crash. Doe this happen to anybody else? this happens to me EVERY SINGLE DAY!
And as for things I've tried, I have restored my iPhone 4 about 4 times to factory settings so far with this last one as setting it up as a new phone. Still isn't working right.

Frankly, I would expect the device to crash. It does smack of sawing off the branch that you're sitting on....
I think you're misunderstanding how some of the native apps on the iPhone are implemented. Things like the phone and such you can never completely stop.
But you can stop the part you're using to interface with that app. So if I fire up the Phone and make a call and then press the Home button to leave I can go back to where I left off if I wanted to. But I can also shut down that part of the app however the main phone app itself is never shut down you just don't see it in the "apps used recently" or things running in the "background" section.

  • Deleting applications on ios4 causing freezing?

    Hi all
I do not know if anyone has experienced this. However I have the iphone 3gs 16 gig white handset. I am running ios4. I have noticed that when I try and delete applications from the multitask doc at the bottom where the red delete indicator is showing. it wont let me delete all applications from the multitask section. It simply freezes my phone. I have to hold the on and off button and home button and let it go when I get the apple logo, to resolve this issue. I have also noticed that sometimes when i try and play a youtube video within safari, i cannot seem to exit the video or sometimes if i am viewing a website, it does not switch from veritcal to horizontal mode. I have done a restore and the problem is stil there at times. Mainly the multitasking problem not so much the safari problem. Can anyone recommend anything to me to help solve this problem?
    thanks in advance

I have an E73 and no issues with the light sensor...I think.  Concerning the supplied memory card, have you tried reformatting it?  I recently had a problem with one of my purchased 8 GB cards slowing down.  I use the cards for file storage only: pictures, music, podcasts, etc.  Saving or deleting files on the card took a very long time, and the application appeared to lock up for roughly 20 (?) seconds with no progress bar.  Examining the card with a program like Windows' chkdsk revealed several errors on that chkdsk ultimately couldn't fix.  So I backed up all the data, reformatted the card, copied the data back, and it's been working perfectly since.  Just like hard drives and other storage, memory cards can fail, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're beyond saving.
On the other hand, I'm sure you've seen threads here about faulty phones.  If the phone itself can fail, then the memory card can, too.  You never know.   Hope that helps.

  • Since I have installed iOS 6.1.3 on my iPhone 5 I have sometimes problems to start a phone call. Everything looks fine, but no ring tone... A workaround is to stop phone app in the multitasking bar. But this is more than inconvenient ;-) Any solution?

In this cases everything looks fine, but no ring tone is there and after sometimes the phone informs me that no connection can be estabilished (its a German phone, therefore I am not sure about the message in English systems). A workaround is to stop the telephone app in the multitasking bar (double click on home button, hold the app symbol pressed for some seconds, close app). Next several call work after this.
I am not sure if an incomming call would work in this mode...
Faces anybody the same problems or has solution for it?

    Basic troubleshooting
    Restart
    Reset
    Restore with backup
    restore as new if required

    hi mate,
have you checked if there are any firmware updates available via Nokia Suite on PC? if there are any, please update to latest version offered. failing that, you can try re-installing your current firmware thru Nokia Suite. failing that, you may need to perform a three-finger hard reset, bear in mind this wipes everything, so please make backup to PC and/or online storage first.

  • Multitasking and folders problem

I just upgraded my 3GS to IOS4 and set up most of my apps in folders. I wanted to try the multitasking, but when I do it only shows me the apps that aren't in folders?
This can't be right, what have I done wrong?
    Thanks

  • HT1933 I am having a problem where EVERY app on my iPhone suddenly started crashing and NONE of them are now usable.

No clue why.  Includes apple apps.  I have no idea *which* of the 500 apps I should select to report.  None were new at the time it started…, etc.  Just doing the same old things with the same old apps one day (and no recent updates) and the next day everything was crashing within 5-65 seconds of opening the app. It's been that way ever since. Usually crash time is closer to 5 seconds after touching the app.  Occasioinally I can get up to 30-40.
I have tried removing individual apps and avoiding using individual apps (particularly those that I always use; again, this is inexplicable.)
I have tried resetting the phone (2 button hold)
    I have tried restarting.
I have tried using only apple apps.  The phone app is the only one that is mostly usuable; if they called me, and the phone app crashes, it puts the green message bar at the top and usually doesn't disconnect, but it's hard to test and I rarely use the phone.  Sometimes after a phone call the iPhone will remain stable for as much as 20 minutes.
I have tried using only one app.
I have tried restoring to a backup.
I have tried restoring and using it with *no* backup.  It seemed to work for nearly an hour, even after redownloading a few old apps to the phone via 3G; problem is I have a handful of apps with data in them that is very important to me and I do not know any other way to back them up and get their data back on the iPhone.  If I can isolate these apps' backup data and reset everything else, I'd be willing to try it.
I was convinced it was a hardware issue until I got the brief apparent success with restoring with no backup.  (above)
I need new ideas… I can always bite the bullet and get a new phone, but I really want to find out how to make sure this problem doesn't crop up again.

Have you tried clean up the apps in the multitask window?
On you iPhone, force close all the Apps in the multitask window.
Follow these steps to force an app to close:
From the Home screen, click the Home button twice.
Tap and hold on the app.
When it starts to jiggle, tap the to close it on eby one until all cleared
Now do a Soft reset of your iPad:
Hold both Home and Sleep button for around 10secs until you see the Apple logo then release. After it returns to Home screen, try your Apps again.

  • More than one VI at a time (i.e. multitasking)

    Hello.
I currently work in a lab where we use LabVIEW to control an multifunction instrument. We use the sofware both for data acquisition (through Ni-DAQ) and for physical control of things like stages, and frequency generators (e.g. through GPIB). There are a few programs that do very simple things (like move a stage with a joystick, or turn a laser on and off) that I would like to run continuously in the background while I run other more specialized software (like a data acquisiton routine). However, when I run more than one VI at the same time I run into very bad timing problems. Some of my programs require this kind of multitasking and I have implemented it using a sort of Master loop (similiar to the Master/S
lave paradigm discussed on the NI website).
If I were to purchase the compiler and build executables out of some of the VIs, would I be able to run these in the background while LabVIEW runs other VIs without running into timing issues?
Also, if I build executables from some of the VIs would these VIs be able to access global variables that LabVIEW is using (I assume the answer is no, but I figured I'd ask).
    Thanks,
    Josh

First, do you know where your timing problems are coming from? Are some of those background tasks very processor intensive, or is the problem that you're sharing subVIs that aren't reentrant (and hence may be "blocking" each other)? Have you tried multithreading the application yet (running the motion control in one thread and the laser control in another, for instance)?
Splitting your tasks between multiple executables might help, but it will almost certainly increase the overhead of each background task, and you will not have common access to global variables. You could, however, work around that by instituting a common data repository as one of your background tasks (presumably accessed through a messaging interface).
In fact, I would probably suggest
this as a method of performance optimizing your application anyway -- if you are using globals extensively for parallel operation, they might be part of the blocking problem.

  • IPhone 3GS On-Screen Keyboard Problem!

The number, space bar and return key on my iPhone 3GS on-screen keyboard is not working until you tilt it to landscape mode! When I tap the number key, it activates the cap key. When I tap the space bar, depending on weather I'm taping the left, middle or right, it will activate the "X, C or B keys, respectively and when I tap the return/done key, it will activate the backspace key! This problem happened suddently about two days ago!
What on earth is the problem and can anyone please help me?
Thank you very much in advance!

Try pushing the "home" button twice rapidly to get the multitasking bar to open. Hold on the icon for the app store for a few seconds until you get the option to close it. Then try reopening it and see what happens. That will probably fix it.

  • Multitasking on iPod Touch 4G, running iOS 6.1.2, nearly impossible. Opened,  background apps do not seem to stay in memory and must "reload" every time I switch back to them. Also, intense battery drain (imo).

Let's say I'm playing Words with Friends, and also Angry Birds. I may want to go back and forth between the two. When I do so, the app that was in the background needs to reload again. There is no quick access or ability to quickly resume where I left off. And the reloading means that the app restarts from its opening screens...so if I was working on a level, I have to start all over again. And quite often, a game like Angry Birds will lag greatly when I first open it...moving almost in slow-motion.
I don't know if this is typical behavior when playing multiple games, or if I have an issue with my device. I've rebooted and even reset and restored, all to no avail.
There doesn't appear to be as much of an issue if I'm playing one game but also have the music player open, or Safari, Notes, Reminders, etc. Those will resume just fine, though there may be some lag when opening/re-opening them.
So I guess the problem seems to lie within 3rd party apps, and not the apps that are part of the iPod/iOS.
The other problem is battery drain. I do all of my music listening via Bluetooth, so I expect that to have a greater impact than if I were using plugged in headphones, and I have location services turned on. But I have most notifications turned off, all email accounts set to manual and not push, screen brightness turned down and auto brightness turned on, "ask to join networks" turned off, auto-lock is set to 2 minutes but I almost always turn off the screen immediately after setting up my music listening (since I do so at work), volume limit turned on, EQ turned off, sound check turned off,
With these settings, my battery can drain 20% or more within 10-15 minutes of game play. And these are not what I would consider memory intensive games--just Words and Angry Birds.
I've installed (and recently uninstalled) a couple of battery meters from the Apple Store as well--freebies. Carat, Battery Doctor, Battery HD, Battery Magic.
Carat and Battery Doctor seemed to offer the most pertinent and accurate information so the others were uninstalled long ago.
The Accelerate tab in Battery Doctor show the amount of memory in use, and the amount of available memory. The vast majority of the time, the memory in use is approximately 94%. I will occasionally choose to "accelerate" which supposedly frees up memory, but this "bump" lasts only a brief time and I'm not sure it's a great idea.
Even with absolutely nothing open or running, my used memory is generally still above 80%.
Carat, if anyone is familiar with it, shows a J-Score. My J-Score is 17, which means that my performance (according to Carat, anyway) is better than only 17% of the users who have Carat installed. In other words, 83% of people are getting better performance from their devices. It also has "battery hog" and "battery bug" sections. It doesn't detect any hogs or bugs.
I use my iPod Touch in rather limited ways. A typical day consists of approximately 5 hours of music listening via Bluetooth and 30 minutes to 1 hour of playing the aforementioned games. The occasional note and reminder, perhaps a brief check-in with the weather, and that's about it. And wifi is in use only when at home (there is no hotspot at work). Still, I need to charge it every day. I'd be keen to do more with the iPod if I could count on it to last more than a day.
I've read up on multiple forums and blogs for tips on prolonging a battery charge, and believe I've taken everything into account, and applied whatever I could. I've even reset the network settings and try to discharge the battery completely once a month (for supposed battery calibration).
I'm really hoping people can offer some suggestions or comments on whether this is typical behavior or if my battery is going, or even offer some additional tips.
With iOS 7 on the horizon, I'm hoping the upgrade will offer some resolutions (I've read there is better multitasking), but considering how weakly my device performs at this point, I'm not entirely convinced that an iOS upgrade will actually make any improvements.
    Thanks a lot for reading.

No, the app does not have to completely restart. It gets shifted in its open state into storage. Similar to how a computer uses the hard disk when it has insufficient memory.
What complicates things is that sometimes memory does not get returned for reuse when you close an app. Thus yo should periodically double click the Home button and "delete" unnecessary apps from the multitasking dock and power off and then back on the iPod.

  • Problems with Media and my Blackberry Bold, is it time for me to give up on RIM this is really annoying

    Hello RIM,
Over the past year since owning a Blackberry, I have had on-going issues with syncing my music between my (2) bolds, so I know this is not specific to the hardware, I have also managed 400 BB's on a BES before so I have a fair idea of how to do things and troubleshoot issues.
    1. My music many times has sounded severely distorted through my car speakers, with lots of bad crackle that hurts my ears
    2. Transferring media between my device and my computer is actually really annoying and now I can't even find my playlists on Windows 7
    3. This should be seemless, it should not be buggy and I can't believe, having done so much support with your hardware and software that this continues to be a real problem for me
I have a playbook, 2 blackberry bolds (I had to buy another 1 because Mobilicity does AWS only and Bell was just plain mean to me so I gave up on them).
I am ready to go on ebay and get rid of this stuff because whilst I mostly use it as a phone (the reason I went with BB), it is important that I am able to do other things with it, without having to go through a dozen articles and issues just to get things to work, these should have been ironed out in the bug reporting process.
So I have reinstalled both Itunes and BB Desktop Manager, both manually and via repair and tried even recopying over my playlists, this doesn't work.
I can't believe the lousy support and buggy software, come on RIM, there is no excuses in this market, PICK UP YOUR GAME and update the BDS or I am done and so will the many other people who won't even take their time to write anything about it on here but vote with their wallet.

Well you know the playbook is actually pretty cool but didn't seem to be ready to go out on time and being a late entrant to the market I would have expected them to showcase the playbook better, especially like how Nintendo gets out there and gets everyone playing with it hands on, there are some things about the Playbook that actually make it unique but it has been poorly marketed.
Unfortunately getting BDS and everything to work properly should not be an issue, I have already spent thousands of dollars on hardware and my phone provider, what am I actually paying for here? So I will spell out some things that make the Blackberry Playbook special and what I would have been pushing had I been in charge of marketing. Firstly I would have had a few different campaigns going, one that targeted business corporate customers, regular business customers and the public that use them as their choice of smartphone and open to potentially buying one.
     1. Flash works really great, come on blackberry, why couldn't you team up with Facebook on this one? Facebook looks better on a Playbook than any other tablet I have seen, in fact the web looks better in general.
    2. Stereo speakers(dual), movies sound great, music sounds great and so do games, in this area, Playbook has the upper hand.
    3. USB & HDMI out - Allows much easier portability of presentations and transferring of files and now I believe there is the Wifi Sync as well.
    4. Blackberry Bridge - You know it's like RIM got backed into a corner on this one, but you know, I think this is the most secure way to operate a tablet, I love how when I turn off bluetooth on my bold, my personal and private information is removed and I can pass it to friends and family without my personal communications being looked into, with the other tablets, it's pretty hard to have different people on them, without probably creating different profiles, with the Playbook, you could share it between a team and it would seamlessly operate between them.
     5. True Multitasking - You know, you can play music, whilst playing a game and you can switch between applications, this funtions pretty awesome. I put on some cool music and loaded up a game on the device and someone whom had an Apple device was sincerely impressed he could listen to music whilst reading or playing games etc. This could also enhance Business Presentations that require audio in the background whilst displaying and going through different information / files or charts.
    6. QNX OS - I mean wow Blackberry, this Operating System is fantastic, I love it, this was an EXCELLENT choice and this I will give you 5 stars on, I can't wait to see what QNX can do on the Blackberry and I would not be surprised if the QNX OS became a major OS against the others, it definitely is polished and apps just install and are ready to go in no time.
RIM has been ahead of the game and because of it's great name with-in business circles they have almost sold themselves and whilst it's nice to see that RIM has sold over 250,000 units with-in the first week this could have been drastically improved by realizing when getting into a NEW market, they need to do the proper marketing and get the devices out there with subject matter experts to educate people whom are checking them out so they can share that information with their friends.
Google paid a very large price with their Nexus One because they where over-confident and thought they would sell based on their name alone, this could have been a learning curve RIM did not have to deal with. There are actually other nice things about the Playbook, the apps that are in their app store are pretty cool and when Android apps are available it will be cooler.
I like the size of the tablet I can comfortably reach accross the screen to hit all the keys on the digital keyboard making it any larger and I couldn't hold it in my hands with the same comfort; copping out to apple fan boys thinking they must have a 10.1" tablet is not necessary, this is the perfect size to sit in your hands, some people think they are small but if they actually watch a movie or play a game on it or look at websites by "Playing with it themselves" they will react differently and actually suggest if your going to do a 10.1" tablet, also keep the smaller sized one as well.
    Suggestions :
    - Working on building in more extensions for gaming such as Unity so that games like battlestar galactica online etc could be played online and directions could be replaced by using the gyroscope.
     - Hire more people if you are having problems meeting deadlines, these companies, including Apple are taking risks to win the market, if your going to take a swing at your competitors, please make it a punch and not a jab, the biggest thing you still have on your side is the market you already had and the market share you have been losing and since we all upgrade our devices so often at this time, come out with something special and we will continue to support you. Okay now that I have that off my chest I feel better. DAMMIT !

  • 5.1 Surround over HDMI: Solve one problem, another rises up.

UPDATE 1:  After a good night's sleep, and after doing a bit more reading on alsa-project.org (big props to this page), I managed to get a much better ~/.asoundrc together.  It solves all my problems, and I can do everything I need.  I've preserved the post below in case anyone else runs into these issues, and I'll post my solution as a response to this post.
UPDATE 2:  Looks like I celebrated too early.  Got more strange problems.  Screw it, I'm going back to PulseAudio.  I just wrote a wrapper script to kill and restart Pulse for applications that really, really need ALSA.
Okay.  I've almost completely worn out my fingers trying to get this working.  I feel like I'm playing Whack-a-Mole.  This is a bit of a lengthy post, but I'll try my best to describe every problem I've encountered in as much detail as I can, followed by the solutions I found, followed by the problems each solution brought with it.  By going through everything this way, mole by mole, hopefully it'll be easy to follow along and help me come to a universally working solution.
    Summarized Version of Problems:
5.1 surround works only on specific applications which are robust enough to allow me to manually specify audio output options, and only if ALSA isn't configured at all
once I've configured ALSA, sound works on every application, but it's all downmixed to 2.0 stereo from this point on
installing PulseAudio lets me choose 5.1 surround as a default, but brings with it its own problems and drawbacks, namely the lack of passthrough support for encoded streams
    Long-Winded Version:
I have my computer connected over HDMI to an AVR with a 5.1 surround speaker system.  At first, I didn't have anything configured in ~/.asoundrc (or its global equivalent, /etc/asound.conf).  Neither file existed, so everything was running off defaults.  I got the name and device number of my card from aplay, ran speaker-test and played a six-channel test file in mplayer.

Everything seemed well, all six channels played from the correct location on both tests, but I did realize that the device number of the card was 3, not 0.  A lot of applications that aren't as configurable expect the default card/device to be set properly, and audio won't work in those applications without specifying that in ALSA's configuration.  Knowing this, I set the following in my ~/.asoundrc:
    pcm.!default {
    type hw
    card HDMI
    device 3
    ctl.!default {
    type hw
    card HDMI
    device 3
This, however, ended up causing more problems.  Oh, it made sound work on everything by default after that, but only for one application at a time!  That surpised me, as I thought ALSA's big advantage over OSS is that it can multitask.  Running the speaker-test the way I did earlier turned out fine, but when I tried playing that test file in mplayer, things got weird again. I've also tried '-af channels=6' in place of '-channels 6' but the same result happened.  It does the same thing without the '-ao alsa' option, I just specified it to trim down the output, so that I wouldn't be copying and pasting all kinds of other errors about not finding OSS or JACK or other things I don't have installed.
If I symlink /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p to /dev/snd/pcmC0D3p, it'll fix the problem, but that feels like one ugly kludge.  I'd have to do it again over and over every time I reboot, too.
Not sure if this would help matters or not, but if anyone knows how to change my card's device number from 3 to 0, I'd like to try that as well, but I'm not sure how to do that sort of thing.  I'm just guessing it might be worth trying, since everything looks for card0/device0 by default, and that kludge I tried earlier did have an effect, so maybe if we can just switch those device numbers with each other, everything would work smoothly without having to force anything through ALSA's configuration at all.  I believe card0/device0 belongs to the Host Bridge... is there a way to have them trade their device numbers for one another's in a safe manner?
I can also get it to play if I specify the device like I did in my first test, using '-ao alsa:device=hdmi', but that defeats the purpose of getting good defaults set if I still have to set everything by hand before I play something.  If I try playing the test file without any options, like so:
    $ mplayer Nums_5dot1_24_48000.wav
... it will play, but only in two-channel stereo, and the parts that should happen in the center, rear and LFE channels get downmixed into the left and right channels.
I can get it to work in aplay, though!  All six channels!  Not that I plan on using this as my primary multimedia software.
    $ aplay -c6 Nums_5dot1_24_48000.wav
The only solution I found so far that allows me to have 5.1 audio by default is to install the PulseAudio server, which is able to find a sink/source named 'alsa_output.pci-0000_00_03.0.hdmi-surround' and lets me choose that as my default.  Only problem with this is that PulseAudio has its own problems.
Aside from the crackling sound issues in some Wine games, Pulse also has a much bigger drawback -- a complete lack of passthrough support, meaning I can't use encoded streams such as Dolby DTS and TrueHD with PulseAudio.  I have a Harman/Kardon AVR and I'd like to get my money's worth out of it, so I'd really like to figure out a solution in ALSA without using Pulse at all.
Does anyone know how I can have my cake and eat it, too?  I just need 5.1 surround, by default, in ALSA without PulseAudio.
HUGE thanks to anyone who tries to help here.  This is really making me sad and frustrated, I've been using Arch for quite a while now and this is the first real big stumper I've come across that forced me to post a thread.  Otherwise I've been having a wonderful time.
Edited because I tried something different that removed *some* issues, but the above problems still remain.

Well, I thought I fixed it doing this...
    pcm.!default {
    type plug
    slave.pcm "dmixer"
    pcm.dmixer {
    type dmix
    ipc_key 1138
    ipc_key_add_uid true
    slave {
    pcm "hw:0,3"
    format S32_LE
    channels 8
    rate 192000
    period_size 9600
    buffer_size 38400
... but then realized it strangely makes applications that run at 640x480 have no sound at all.  No idea why the video resolution is screwing up the sound, but that's what's happening, because if I set the resolution any higher, the sound comes back.
I'm going back to PulseAudio, I feel like ALSA is mocking me.  I wrote a wrapper script for the few times where pure, Pulse-less ALSA will be necessary for me.  Here it is, in case it helps anyone else.  I've tested it with XBMC, it turns off Pulse and allows ALSA to pass through encoded streams unhindered.  It also works with some Wine applications that have scratchy audio glitches in Pulse.
    #!/bin/bash
    echo "autospawn = no" > $HOME/.config/pulse/client.conf
    pulseaudio --kill &> /dev/null
    "$*"
    rm -f $HOME/.config/pulse/client.conf
    pulseaudio --start &> /dev/null
I'm removing the SOLVED tag because technically I didn't resolve any of my original issues, I more or less gave up on what I wanted to do and found another way to satisfy my needs, but it still isn't as elegant as I had hoped for.  In any case, I'm done with this issue for now and the forseeable near-future, but if anyone has anything further to add, feel free.

We are fellow users here on these user-to-user forums, you're not talking to iTunes Support nor Apple.
Have you tried closing all apps via the iPad's multitasking bar and then doing a soft-reset and seeing that helps ? To close all apps :
iOS 7: double-click the home button to open the taskbar, and then swipe or drag each app's screen from there up and off the top of the screen to close it, and click the home button to close the taskbar.
iOS 6 and below : from the home screen (i.e. not with any app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of each app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
Soft-reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Okay, so I try to open an app, but for some reason, I can't close out of the app, multitask, or even shut of my iPod, so it won't lock, but I have the time set to two minutes but its been half an hour and it still didn't lock. Please tell me if fixable.

I try to open up a texting app, and now, it won't lock, exit out (or crash suprisingly), multitask, or even power off. I also had auto lock set to two minutes and it has been about a full hour and it has never locked. If there is someone out there who has the same problem as me, and knows how to fix it, PLEASE TELL ME!!! I have a lot of texts that need to be answered... I also use the Assisstive touch and please tell me if that affects anything about these problems.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
