Multitasking question

How do I close an app without having to go into the multitasking tray and closing it there?
Maybe I don't want the app to stay running in the background. Is there a shorter way to close it?

The apps don't "stay running" in the background. They remain frozen and resume once you reopen them.

  • MBP Multitask questions

Hi, I do a lot of multi-tasking - and a decent amount of video watching, not editing. Don't do much photo editing either, besides just very basic stuff.
I "heard" MB's, multitask a lot better than the Windows OS.
    I'd be getting a refurbished base model, 13.3" (2.26/2GB/160). I currently have a Sony Vaio with 4GB ram, 320GB-HD, and 2.2 C2D.
When I multi-task, both cores are running at nearly 100% load, almost always. With Apple OS, does it more effectively and efficiently multi-task? (ie. I don't need 4GB of ram [although on W7, I use at least 75% of the ram], faster processor, etc.?)
Just trying to grasp the differences between the OS's.
Thanks for your time, and hopefully this is in the right place..

I would say that fixing the grease fixes the problem. Please go check out Phil's site at
    www.mbpro.info
and see the graphs for yourself. You will also find the info for downloading the appropriate widget there. I think this site will answer any questions you have about the heat issues.
Let me know if you still have questions after going there and I will be happy to answer them for you.

  • Multitasking and Skype question

I am very happy that the Skype app now supports multitasking. However, there is one thing about Apple's implementation of multitasking that confuses me. My understanding is that the OS can arbitrarily decide to terminate a background app to free up resources.
So, my question is, if you are waiting for a call on Skype, how can you be sure that Skype is actually running in the background? My understanding is that in iOS there is no way to figure out what tasks are running in the background (double clicking the home button gives you a list of both recently used and tasks that are active as background tasks).
Do you just have to cross your fingers and hope that you are not running any memory intensive tasks that may cause Skype to automatically be terminated?
    Does anyone know?
    Thanks!

After you reboot your iPhone, no user apps are running (e.g. Skype), and thus no user apps have registered for any of the kernel services. You'll need to restart the user apps you're interested in having running, i.e. Skype. Normally you shouldn't have to reboot your iPhone, unless upgrading the OS.
When an app registers itself for a background service, it also registers with the kernel to be able to be "woken up" exactly where it left off. (The latter is available as a separate API, and is used by game apps.) Yes, it is automatically started, from where it left off, or as the user app callback indicates, when the background kernel service wakes it up. (User apps in the task bar are suspended and NOT executing on the run queue of the kernel.)
A runaway kernel service would be detected when you see CPU Idle usage at 0% and CPU System usage at 70-80% with the rest in Nice and User CPU usage.
Of course any software has bugs. This is why we (iPhone owners) occasionally see battery drainage. I suggest getting A+ System Monitor, a free app, and monitoring your CPU usage and Load (1/5/15 minute number of processes running average). The app also runs at the same time you have the task bar open (double-press the Home button). A CPU Idle usage above 80% is excellent. Average I've observed is about 90%.

  • Planning for Macbook (pro?) Questions about recording audio + multitasking

    Hi Everyone
I am seriously contemplating switching to a Mac book (Pro?) in the next few months, and I want to clarify issues about recording audio.
I record music and other stuff at our local church using a mixer and feed stereo straight into a pc which records using the excellent Adobe Audition (... well it works for me  :-)
To start with I expect I'll be using GarageBand and later look at other solutions such as ProTools I used to use on the PC.
    QUESTION
I would welcome experienced users to comment on how well GrageBand or similar can multi task while recording is taking place. In other words what can I do - Not do, while recording.
    Be honest please.
I worry I might get an exagerated reply from an Apple evangelist and I'm not seeking perfection, just knowledge of practical experiences.
I'd like an idea of what limits present users have found running recording apps like Garageband or similar.
As an example :  what experiences running large wordprocessing application or Internet (e.g. FTP or Safari) while recording?
    Replies appreciated
    Pete

If it's an important recording or a once-only opportunity to record something then I would seriously advise against multi-tasking on any computer, PC or Mac, whilst recording.  Dedicate all processing power to capturing the recording, and if you want to browse the web/update your resumé whilst recording then use another computer!

  • IOS 4.0 Question - Multitasking

So I suppose my vision of multitasking was different from Apple's.
When I switch to a different app via multitasking, the app I was just on restarts. I was hoping the app would remain where I left off. Why is that? Is it just the way apple designed it?

The apps have to be designed to support multitasking. Expect many of your applications to have updates in the next few days.

  • New to IPhone and have a few Questions?

To start I want to say that I am a long time (25+ years) veteran of technology but am new the the IPhone. My IPhone is not Jailbroken and would like to keep it that way if I can. Allthgouh I did jailbrake it with blackra1n for about 30mins then I did a factory reload and let it be as it started acting stupid once I started installing apps from unofficial sources.;) Im a x86 nerd and NOT a MAC guy. I haven't sat down at a MAC/Apple in about 15/20 years.
I just got my first IPhone 3Gs/16GB. (Coming from a BlackBerry Curve 8310) the other day and although it is taking some time getting used to, I think I will like it more then I do once I get used to it.
Anyhow I have a few questions to start off with. I did some googleing already but just want to make sure I understand a few things.
All though I did the BlackRa1n jail break thing and installed a few apps then it locked up and failed to turn on or something so I did the whole reload from itunes and now its all good. Anyhow.....
1.) It appears as if one can not run a program from the home sreen and have it run in the background while doing other things? Take the many SIP Clients I have played with in the last 48 hours. Once I open the SIP Client and connect if I hit the physical button below the screen the program closes, thus the sip client no longer works. Pretty much most if not all apps iv installed from the App Store act like this. Is this the case? Does the IPhone not mutitask at all or verywell?
2.) Are there any SIP Clients that work over 3G? All the ones iv tried say they are for WIFI only. The SIP Clients work fine when on WIFI. It sounds like this is Apples way of controlling/monopolizing the voice/data/voip aspect of the platform/device. Im sure they would lose a lot of money if everyone did what I am trying to do.Just my opinion.
3.) Maybe I play with it to much but **** the battery dies fast. Is there anyway to optimize the battery at all other then for me not to use it as much?
4.) How can I remote lock it if I lose it or it gets stolen? I read somewhere this could be done.
5.) Are there any other Shells/HomeScreens/Themes that can replace the standard 4x4x4 row icons?
6.) The speaker phone (when on a call) seems kinda low even when turned all the way up. Is there any way to make it louder?
7.) I am using the built in VPN client to connect to my works PPTP Windows 2003 VPN server but the client randomly disconnects through out the day. Is there any way to have some type of keep alive set or are there any other VPN Clients that I can use?
Sorry for all this just thought I would ask for feedback.
Many thanks for any help anyone can provide,

1.) It appears as if one can not run a program from the home sreen and have it run in the background while doing other things? Does the IPhone not mutitask at all or verywell?
The iPhone SDK does not permit ANY 3rd party apps from running in the background or multitasking. It does provide for push notifications which can simulate certain background activity in terms of receiving external notifications while the app is actually closed. This works reasonably well with IM apps, news, sports, weather, travel updates and some peer-to-peer games.
2.) Are there any SIP Clients that work over 3G? All the ones iv tried say they are for WIFI only.
Just how would the SIP server connect to the cell carrier 3G network? Do you know of ANY that do??
3.) Maybe I play with it to much but **** the battery dies fast. Is there anyway to optimize the battery at all other then for me not to use it as much?
3G voice and data connections are culprits. Avoid email push and frequent fetching. See this Apple article for detailed suggestions.
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html
4.) How can I remote lock it if I lose it or it gets stolen? I read somewhere this could be done.
MobileMe Find My iPhone will locate, set a passcode lock and optionally wipe all data from your iPhone. You have to be a MobileMe subscriber.
5.) Are there any other Shells/HomeScreens/Themes that can replace the standard 4x4x4 row icons?
No. Apple does not permit this.
6.) The speaker phone (when on a call) seems kinda low even when turned all the way up. Is there any way to make it louder?
You can troubleshoot your iPhone as described in the User Guide - restart, reset, reset settings, restore. Or, get hearing aids
7.) I am using the built in VPN client to connect to my works PPTP Windows 2003 VPN server but the client randomly disconnects through out the day. Is there any way to have some type of keep alive set or are there any other VPN Clients that I can use?

  • General and specific questions on the applicability of Sun Studio 11

Hi. In an e-mail letter from Sun Microsystems I read about Sun Studio 11 to "utilize its record-setting parallelizing compilers." From this message I was attracted by the possibility of adding something like parallel processing, not by changing the processor (hardware), but by adding Sun-Studio-11 software to a Linux operating system. Now I already have a Fortran compiler, the Intel Fortran Compiler for Linux, which is free and can handle Cray-style pointers, a feature hard to find in a free Fortran compiler.
1a. So for the most basic of questions, without having parallel-processing hardware, just an ordinary processor [a 1-GigaHertz (GHz) Advanced MicroDevices Duron central processing unit, in my case], is it possible to have parallel processing and thereby increase one's computing speed by installing Sun Studio 11 in a Linux operating system?
1b. If so, by what factor could one expect the speed of computation to increase over not having Sun Studio 11 installed? (If the gain in speed is dependent on the type of computations being performed, I imagine possibly using a Fortran code to perform numerical calculations using and perhaps searching for minima or maxima in a two-or-more-dimensional surface. So please give me an idea of the sort of gain in speed one could expect for these two types of activites, calculations using formulas and searches for minima and maxima among already-computed quantities.)
1c. Again if so, how could one just by adding software have parallel processing without two or more hardware processors? In other words, what is the basic working principle of the software to make the simultaneous performance of multiple tasks (multitasking or parallel processing) possible?
2a. Does Sun Studio 11 include a Fortan compiler?
2b. If so, must one use it to have parallel processing with Sun Studio 11?
2c. Or will the Intel Fortran Compiler for Linux work with Sun Studio 11 to have a parallel processing capability?
Concerning hardware requirements I read that Sun Studio 11 requires a minimum of 512 MegaBytes (MB) of memory, presumably Random Access Memory (RAM). My Hewlett-Packard, ZE1110, Pavilion, notebook computer has 256 MB of RAM, but is expandable to a maximum of 512 MB of RAM. So in this respect it is in principle at least technically possible for me to meet the minimum system requirement for Sun Studio 11 with my computer, if I choose to increase its RAM. Somehow accommodating the cost of such a RAM addition, including whether one may have to buy two, matching, 256-MB RAM modules or just presumably one additional 256-RAM module, is another requirement. But before spending money for such an upgrade, one should first thoroughly investigate other matters to determine if other things are going to work and to determine what gain, if any, one could expect in computing speed with Sun Studio 11 and an additional 256 MB of RAM; then decide, based on such data, whether the purchase is personally worth the money or not. That's one motivation behind this posting; another motivation is for me to learn some things.
Lastly I would like to here thank whoever was thoughtful enough to provide the Sun Download Manager (SDM) 2.0, which allows the pausing and resumption of the 207-MB download studio11-lin-x86.tar.bz2 for the Linux version of the Sun Studio 11! Using a slow, dialup, Internet connection like mine having a maximum speed of 28.8 kilobits/second, this makes it possible to download that file over a number of Internet sessions instead of having to have an uninterrupted, 19-or-more-hour Internet session. Besides the invconvenience of tying up one's telephone line for that long a time, it might be even be difficult to have such an uninterrupted Internet session for that long a time. I have at least started such a download using the SDM 2.0 potentially over multiple Internet sessions. Whether or not I carry it out to completion could depend on whether everything looks good with Sun Studio 11 for my particular situation. Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for both of your postings here. I'm mostly trying to learn something here.
From Maxim Kartashev: "For example, if one thread (or process, or lwp) frequently performs an I/O operation, then the other thread (process, lwp) can utilize processor resources to perform, say, some computations while first one waits for operation to complete."
I think I might understand what you meant above. I guess lwp in the above context stands for light-weight process. And I think you may be talking about a potential gain in speed with just one, ordinary processor. I guess you meant that one program, or perhaps group of programs, could perform input/output processes at the same time it is performing calculations because different parts of the processor are being used in these two groups of processes. Then on "while first one waits for operation to complete" I guess you meant that if the input/output operations finish before the computations finish, then thread 1 that was performing the input/output operations will have to wait until the current computations ordered by thread 2 are complete before thread 1 can utilize the computational resources for its own computations; i.e., two threads can't use the same computational resources of an ordinary processor at the same time. How is my thinking so far, Maxim, right, partly right, or all wrong?
Now if the above thinking of mine is right, then it appears that one could have some gain in speed doing things like you suggest with just one, ordinary processor. And if so, I imagine that the gain could be a maximum of a factor of two for a program that requires spending as much time in input and output as it does in computation; i.e., keeping both the computational and input/output resources working all of the time without the input/output resources waiting on the computational resources or vice versa. How is my thinking here?
If the above thinking is correct, just for purposes of discussion with just one, ordinary processor, not a dual processor, and a program which does nothing but computations there would be no gain in speed using Sun Studio 11 and a Fortran compiler over not using Sun Studio 11. In other words, to increase the speed of computation one would have to buy a faster computer, buy parallel processing hardware for an existing computer and use parallel-processing software, or somehow figure out how to harness two or more computers to work for you at the same time with instructions from one piece or perhaps set of pieces of code set up for parallel processing using two or more different computers. The latter case would be a computer analogue or "two 'heads' are better than one," not human heads, but computers. How is my thinking here?
Here I am still assuming that it is possible for one processor to be used to do two different kinds things at once. However, I don't see how one Fortran program could instruct two things to be done at once. This is because I have not seriously studied parallel processing, I suppose. That is I am used to a sequential set of instructions that proceed from top to botton down the lines of code; i.e., one instruction or line of code can't be executed until the line of code before it has been completely executed. That is the computing "world" with which I am familiar. So how about someone here teaching me with an example of parallel-processing Fortran code how parallel processing works, explaining what instruction or group of instructions tells the computer to execute input and computational instructions at the same time?
Based on the encouraging information from one or more other people I have been able to use the Intel Fortran for Linux 8.1.024, if I remember correctly, in a computer with a 1-GigaHertz (GHz), Advanced MicroDevices (A.M.D.), Duron Processor. So this is at least one case where it is not essential to have an Intel processor to use the Intel Fortran Compiler for Linux 8.1.024.
Is the Sun Fortran compiler free for personal use? And can it handle Cray-style pointers?

  • Performance-testing-videos and general questions

    Hey,
I've been trying to evaluate if it would be reasonable to use the packager for developing commercial products.
I would like to show you some videos of my results.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsprSZY-HEM   --> iPhone/iPod
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJNcz58690c   --> iPhone/iPod
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hH3vnhOWcs  --> iPad
From my prespective this seems the maximum that can be done with the packager concerning performance.
-There are 3 parallax scrolling background layers.
    -Scrolling is somewhat smooth
-Performance is ok, gameplay in the demos doesn't feel sticky.
-no slowdowns for up to max 30 enemy sprites on screen.
    - basic pixel based collision with an image is possible - though only for 2-3 sprites registered for collision at the same time.
I am not a very profound programmer and i am sure a lot of my code could be optimized.
What I would like to ask is:
    1) Has somebody been able to squeeze more out of the packager?
    2) Since packager apps have problems with multitasking on iOS and strategies to save and restore the apps state on reload/focus seem buggy - would it be professional to produce apps with the packager?
    3) If you start (and stop) several different packager Apps the device performance (iPhone/iPad) will come to a grinding halt because of memory issues when multitasking. So the question would again be, can you sell software that will only perform under certain circumstances?
Those of you who have Apps in the store, have there been any negative comments on those issues?
    Please comment freely.
    Thanks,
    Simon

in my opinion, flash is a viable option only if the application being developped
    1. is not graphic, memory or cpu intensive
    2. is trying to get rapid deployment into ios/android/wm7 market with relative ease
    3. relative easier programming/graphical UI (Flash much more user friendly than xcode)
then yes flash is your solution.
However the 1. thing varies greatly on hardware and what your app can achieve. the bottom line is that apps in flash are and will always be slower than native apps merely because it launches a flash player to run your app. hopefully next update can address the issue with performance rather than an API update pack.
I would rather have better performance.

  • I don't have a question so much as a comment for APPLE. I am a new iPhone 5s user and it has many things I like but It is too small and I can only talk on the phone and use the internet if i am in a position to use a wifi connection and that is not good

I am a new iPhone 5s user. I like many of the features it offers. I don't like that I cannot talk and use the internet (if I am away from WI-FI) and this phone is too small. I am actually thinking of returning it and going back to an Android. After all the hassle it took to get all my stuff working on this phone , it may be worth the switch. This phone needs to be able to multitask freely in this day and age. Also Safari is not the best search engine but I could work with it if I could talk and use it at the same time. I use my phone for business and this is a feature that is needed in my line of work.

    TJBUSMC1973 wrote:
The iPhone is working, as designed and advertised.  In this case, the user failed to educate themselves properly, either by proper research or asking the right questions, before purchasing the device.
I understand that the OP failed to do research. But then, I wasn't replying to the OP. I was replying to Chris. I have Verizon. I can talk and use data at the same time with my Droid Maxx. Therefore, the problem is not just with the network. It would be technically possible for an iPhone to do that on Verizon/Sprint if Apple had chosen to use a different chip, such as the kind other phone manufacturers have elected to use.
Of course, this is probably all irrelevant to the OP's issue. It was merely a point of clarification, especially for those people who are used to being able to use both voice and data at the same time on Verizon. When they switch to an iPhone, they are often surprized at the limitation.
    Best of luck.

  • 3 Questions from a new Blackberry convert

Hello! I'm a PocketPC user turned BB owner and I dove in with the 8900.
I just have a few usability questions and I'm hoping you can help...
    1. Is there a way to have notifications of new SMS, email, and IM messages pop up? I get the tiny icon at the top, but I have to back out of whatever I'm doing, go into the appropriate app, and guess where the message is. I saw a couple of apps on Handango that might do this, but they don't seem to work with IMs, which is the worst of the all. Any suggestions? (I'm spoiled by my multitasking PPC.)
    2. Can I change the icons that appear on the first screen? I have two email accounts so I have the messages thing, one email, the other email, then contacts, calendar and browser. The second email pushed the Media icon off. Is this customizable?
    3. This is a biggie for me: When I create an event in the calendar, I know that I can set the reminder for whatever I want. And I found the option to set the default snooze time when the event pops up. But here's the thing: there are some events that I want to warn myself about 3 days in advance, then snooze til the next day, and others (like picking up a kid, for instance) that I want to have pop up 30 minutes before and snooze for 15 minutes. As far as I can tell though, if I want to snooze for any amount of time other than the default, I have to open the event itself and change the reminder time. Is there any other way?
Thank you so much for your insights!
    ~emily

    Hi and welcome
    1. I recomend you to solve this problem with two programms: BerryBuzz and Aerize Email
    2. Press the Menu button (left of the trackball), go to the icon you like to move, press the menu button again, choose Move and move the icon in the very first row. On this way you will get it on the homescreen.
    3. I think, you cannot set different times for snooze and popup a calendar event, popup and snooze happens in the same time (f.e. 15 min, 30 min, x day etc before the event). If you want tohave different notification for each event, you must change itfor every event separately.

  • Want to buy a MacBook Pro - looking for tips, got questions

    Dear reader,
I bought a 27" iMac in april 2010 (the late 2009 model) with 8gb of memory, an i7 2,7 GHz quad-core and the Ati Radeon HD 4850 512MB. I really like Apple and Mac but the iMac is not my best gamble. I have alot of eye strain because I have a small desk, and I notice I'm still not at the desired speed level.
*Please note:* I talk alot and I have many questions. If you want to answer 1 or 2 questions and save time, please add the question number and answer that specific question. Thanks!
*This is what I will be using the MacBook Pro for:*
    - Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator. I am a webdesigner/graphic designer (for hobby, still studying) - see wwww.openmindedmedia.nl
    - Everything for personal use. I am selling my iMac so I will use this machine for music, watching dvds by connecting it to a tv screen, playing games eventually (Diablo 3), surfing the web
    - Word, Excel, etc.
    - Sitting outside in the sun (photoshop/illustrator/indesign etc)
    - I want to hook it to 2 external LED monitors, both 22-24 inch.
I value speed and quick responses alot. My current iMac is still lacking this.
*This is the setup I had in mind:*
    - MacBook Pro 15" 2,2 GHz quad-core i7 with the AMD Radeon HD 6750M with 1GB GDDR5, 4GB memory
    - 256 GB SSD
    That's € 2575 already, with student discount..
    *My questions to you:*
Q1. I multitask alot. At most moments I have mail, firefox, skype, photoshop, path finder, itunes activated at the same time. Is it worth considering the upgrade from 4GB to 8GB? (extra € 185)
Q2. Is it possible to hook the laptop to 2 external monitors? There is only 1 thunderbolt connection for 2 monitors.
Q3. Will this actually be better than my iMac in overall performance? It has a slower processor (from 2,7 GHz to 2,2 GHz), less RAM (from 8GB to 4GB). And I really don't understand how a video card as small as a post card can be as effective as the sandwich-sized videocard in my iMac right now.
Q4 I don't understand this aboult ThunderBolt. If I have an external HDD with ThunderBolt connectivity attached to my MacBook Pro, will that mean I can put alot of programs, music and files on the external hdd and access them even FASTER then when they are on my SSD? Because SSD's have a read speed of something like 200 or 300 mb/s right? But with ThunderBolt I can read with 900 mb/s from a HDD, so would that mean that a HDD with ThunderBolt is 3 times faster than an internal SSD? As in: I could buy a 128GB SSD and put my bigger files on the External HDD to access them even faster. Searched my *** off for an answer.
Q5. Right now I am thinking about NOT taking the apple care protection plan. It's another € 290 and I personally never had any problems with desktop computers. How is your personal advice for this matter? I am only afraid of it getting stolen but that's not covered anyways.
Q6. Do you have any other advices/tips?
I really hope someone (or more than one!) could help me with this. Especially Question 3 (and 4) have my interest.
Thanks alot for your time. Have a good day,
    Julius van der Kwast

    Hi Julius,
As you can see in my profile section, my MBP is older by 5 years, 2GB RAM and with regards to question 1 (Q1), has no problems with having all those programs open at the same time with the possible exception of Photoshop since I use Gimp instead. With twice the RAM and much overall much better specs, Photoshop shouldn't be an issue. But you listed some other activities that might need that additional RAM. But the advise most give is to not get it from Apple but from a third party.
Q5 - I always get Apple Care. Only had to use it once but it paid for itself that one time.
Sorry, can't help you much with the questions you really want answered since I won't have a new MBP until (hopefully) next week but for Q4, I believe it depends on the peripheral. My current monitors are too old to allow them to be hooked up in a chain. Supposedly, if the monitors do have the ports, you could via the MBP Thunderbolt port. The speeds are also dependent upon the peripheral. If the external hard drive is using a USB 2 port, you are limited by that speed (480 Mb/s). If it has a Thunderbolt port, then from what I understand, we, my friend, are in for some great times because I believe your RAM will have the ability to access data as fast as it can take it at 10Gb/s (and if will need those kinds of speeds, the 8GB of RAM may be the way to go). The Thunderbolt demos on YouTube where they are accessing four video files from a Raid drive, then sending them back out via Final Cut Pro to a monitor are amazing. I'll probably never push this machine to anywhere near it's limits but I can't wait to see what others do.
    Peace,
    Jeremiah

  • Multiple questions re iPhone iOS 7. Please help where you can.

    Hi,
I've had a Macbook and an iMac before, so am not unfamiliar with Apple products and the OS in general, however I have just got an iPhone 5C, and after years of mobile phone Android, have not found migrating to the iPhone half as straight-forward as I thought it would be, and have a NUMBER of questions.  I'm unclear on a number of items that I have attempted to search for, and figure out.
I'm sorry to post all these questions in one discussion! I possibly probably will ask them all individually, but for economy, and in case there's anybody who likes killing more than one bird with a stone, I thought I'd post them all here.
Please answer any that you can. Any help will be much appreciated.
    1. App Store / iTunes Store - the Android Play Store houses everything in one, but on the iPhone you have the App Store for apps and games, and the iTunes store for everything else, right?
    2. However, where do you search for podcasts?? I can't find podcasts as a category in the iTunes store?
    3. And I can find Audiobooks as a category in the iTunes store, but where can I find ebooks? Or does this not exist? (It does on the android play store).
    4. When you browse through the Featured apps, or Top Charts on the App Store, it presents the apps in a list format each in small/medium size with icons and a small amount of information displayed. HOWEVER, when you use the search function, it displays the app results full-screen. i.e. browsing through the results each app takes up the whole screen, and you swipe along to see the next app. If there are hundreds or more results, it makes it awful to browse through the results of the app search....
    5. is there a way to change the display format of the search results? i.e. in list format and show multiple results on one page, scrolling along or down? I would really, really like to do this.
    6. And can you filter the search results at all?? You don't seem to be able to filter the search results by category or price, or anything. Is this right?
I am finding app store pretty horrific to use, so any tips would be much appreciated.
Next questions (and bless your patience if you're still with me here),.....
    7. Newsstand. So I can search for newspapers and magazines in newstand, and in the App Store, and then they will automatically be put in Newsstand? However, I downloaded BBC News, and a couple of other newspaper apps, and they are not in Newsstand?
...I can't move anything out of Newsstand onto my phone, i.e. The New York Times, and I can't move anything into Newsstand that's on my phone, i.e. the Guardian app? Is this right?! (I realise I'm giving away all my reading choices here). Surely this can't be right?
    8. Notifications. If something is updated/downloaded et cetera, I get a little red circle at the top right of the app with a number in it telling me there's been some *activity* in that app and to go and check it out. That's fine. But I have a had one of these notification bubbles above my Newsstand app for days now, and I don't know what it refers to or how to make it go away. I've opened Newsstand, and I've opened every newspaper/magazine that I've brought into newsstand, and it hasn't disappeared. Is there any place or way to determine what the notification refers to? If I'm calling it a 'notification' in error, please forgive me and correct me . Short of deleting every magazine in my newsstand, I don't know how to get this red bubble gone. Please help bubble-free me.
    9. MESSAGES. This has astounded me. There are no drafts whatsoever in iPhone time messages? So if you go to compose a new message, if for any reason you can't or don't want to complete the text message at the time, if you leave whatever you have written is gone?
    10. If this is the case, is there an alternative text messaging application that I can use, that would allow this functionality? I'm not talking about whatsapp, which I have, or any kind of messaging platform that uses internet and requires the receiver to have the same app. Just straight text messaging that uses the text allowance given by your service provider. Is there an alternative to this, that allows drafts and the normal functionalities provided for text messages by other phones?
    11. Is there a way to search sent messages alone?
    12. Sometimes my text messages appear green, and sometimes they appear blue. Is there a reason for this? (This is a minor question, please feel free to pass over it if time is scarce)
    Finally, and nearly there.
    13. The push button at the bottom of the screen takes you out of apps, and if you push it twice it takes you to all open apps. Is there no way to actually close an open app when you exit it? Or if you want to actually close an app, any and every time, you have to push the iPhone home button once, then you have to push it twice, and then you have to swipe the app to close it. IS that right?
    14. Or should I not be worried about multiple apps being open in the background? How much battery/resourches does it actually use?
    15. I know that I can close multiple apps simultaneously, or at least three, by swiping three up at the same time. Is there any way to simply close all apps at the same time? Or any app I can download that will do this?
    16. Airdrop. I have a Macbook pro that's less than a year old, and the iPhone 5c is brand new. I can't get Airdrop to work. I've put them both as discoverable to everybody or contacts only, I've turned the wifi on and off for both, bluetooth on and off for both, every different combination possible, and there's nothing. Nada. Guidance?
    17. Specifically, if I can't get it to work, who do I go to? Can I take my macbook and iphone to an Apple store? Can I get customer support? I want to use the airdrop feature as I've figured I've paid for it, but I don't know who to access the support for doing so, or which would be the most effective.
    Really and truly finally:
    18. My bluetooth seems to be turning itself on all the time. Even when I've turned it off. Why oh why?
    Thank you very much.

    1. Yes. App sotre has Apps and Games. Itunes has everything else.
    2. Podcasts are also found in the iTunes store. (The Podcast App only plays them, but is not a store)  You can search by title, and using the More button at the top filter by type. Select Podcast.
    3. Ebooks can be found in the iBooks App. Its a separate App and store.
4, 5 and 6.unfortunately no, no and sadly no.
    9.  Nope, Messages is treated like a chat as such no drafts.
    10. There are many Apps in the store for SMS messaging.
    11. Spotlight search searches everything. You can go into Settings->General->Spotlight search and deactivate everything except messages to search for messages only.
12.Yes.  Green messages are standard SMS  messages. Blue messages are iMessages. Apple's messaging service.  If the user is not using an Apple device or is not registered with iMessage it will send an SMS. Otherwise it will use iMessage over the internet to save on SMS costs.
    13. When you exit an App most will close. When you get to all open Apps swipe the App screen shot to close it manually.
    14. Most Apps in the Multitasking list aren't actually running. As such they don't use battery. Only Apps set to background tasks will continue to run via the Background App refresh setting.
    16. Correct Airdrop at this point is only between iDevices.  or between Macs. You can't Airdrop between a Mac and an iDevice.
    17. You can take your Phone to an Apple Store for support form the Genius bar if required. You also have 90 days phone support.
    18. Airdrop uses Bluetooth. and you may have another App that needs it.
You may want to take a look at the manual for specifics:

  • Multitasking bar? Does this constantly use data?

    Hi,
Unfortunetly AT&T did away with their unlimated data feature so I'm stuck with the 2gb per month plan. My question is when I leave an app in the multitask bar does this constantly use my data? I have notifications turned off and I have my mail set up for me to manually load it. It's becoming a pain to have to keep an eye on which apps are running and to not be able to shut the app completely down when I close it, instead I'm going to my MTB every 10 min. to kill apps.
    Thank you!

I popped into the AT&T store this afternoon and confirmed that I could keep my unlimited plan and still have a family plan. Which is nice, not sure I need it but it does offer another choice.
I've been relatively uninspired by AT&T's service in my area and researching changing to the Droid X as well. It does have a few features that are attractive like a replaceable battery, storage on a replaceable card and so on. The display on the iPhone 4 is simply amazing though and I already prefer the interface of the iPhone to the Droids, so it's probably going to be an upgrade instead of a switch of providers.
The video conferencing on the iPhone is a nice feature but since it's required to be over wifi on each connection, the chances of both my wife and myself being on wifi at the same time unless we're in the house together are slim to none and slim left town. So, great feature, not very practical.
I did find one thing unique today, the sales guy at AT&T had his own iPhone 4 and we did a couple of speed tests while I was there vs my 3GS. Now we were both on 3G at the time and really the speeds should have been almost identical as the processor should have nothing to do with the transmission speed over 3G but his phone blew mine away. A bit on the download but a huge amount on the upload. Kind of makes me wonder if there's been something wrong with my 3Gs that I wasn't really aware of?

  • Ipad background audio from video when multitasking

    Hello.
This is a request if people can either feedback On their present experience or try this out themselves first and feedback.
I have an ipad 1. When ever i try to get background audio to play from video when multitasking in another app, eg safari, from any video app including plex, airvideo, vlc,  and the original apple video app. All that occurs is that the icon changes to the ipod and a random song is played from my music library instead of the audio from the video i was watching. This does not matter if the video file is streamed or stored on the ipad itself.
There is one slight and occasional proviso to this, as at times if the video file is tagged in itunes as 'music' rather than 'movie' or 'tv show' etc then it does on occasions work, and on occasions youtube videos will play in the background. But most of the time these aspects also dont function int he background with the ipod icon instantly replacing which ever video app icon i tried to use in the background.
Now my sons iphone 4 manages to function correctly and always plays video in the background when multitasking.
I have asked this question before on this forum, with no response, so booked a visit to my local genius bar. Where they checked my ipad and agreed it wasnt working as ios should, then interestingly they attempted to do the same on an ipad 2 and it failed to work in exactly the same way.  Their response was that this was obviously a fault of the ipad ios, possibly due to the ipad having a separate video app where as the iphone has video within its generic ipod app.
I did the usual by informing apple via of this bug through the feedback system, and requested that the genius bar do the same. But having thought about this, and failed to see any other users on this forum who are also puzzled at this lack of what i think is an important function, i wonder if this means that i am the only one who likes to listen to video when im browsing, so dont need it, or wether everyone elses ipads function as ios should do, and for some reason both my ipad, and the ipad 2 tested in the shop are at fault.
So can i request if others reading this can have a go to see if their ipad will play background audio from video when multitasking, or if the same problem occurs.
Thanks very much this is really appreciated.

Oops clicked the wrong button, I meant to click a 'helpful answer' as it  hard to have a correct answer to such a question.
    But thanks for the replies.
It looks like this is a bug in ios solely for the ipad, as it does work fine on the iphone  although wonder which way the ipod touch will perform. interestingly it looks like i may also be in the minority of wishing to listen to video files as I browse:)
Which probably means apple may never get around to sorting it, as no one else uses the function.
Anyway thanks for the replies, if any one else wants to see the bug have a go and comment, i find it funny how I seem to be the only one to have found it to date.
    R:)

  • Basic question on SQL database file structure

I'm learning to use JDBC / databases . I'm using JBuilder3 professional and HSQL (aka Hypersonic). I've
been following the Java Tutorial on learning databases.
    So far I've sucessfully
set up the drivers / URL etc
    connected to the URL
created a database (COFFEEBREAK , as per the tutorial)
    added tables
    added data
    queried the database
------------- with the tutorial , so far so good. --------
My only database experience prior to this was using Microsoft access, where tables, data, queries etc are all
    stored in one file <myfile.mdb>
But with the example I am following, not one but 4 files have been created:
    COFFEEBREAK.data
    COFFEEBREAK.backup
    COFFEEBREAK.properties
    COFFEEBREAK.script
the COFFEEBREAK.data file, looks like this (one line) in a text editor:
    padding="0" cell
After I added data , using SQL ,I was expecting this file to grow ("as data rows were added") , but no change at all - still just one line.
The file that DOES change is the COFFEEBREAK.script file. The SQL instructions get added to the end of the file eg :
    <various lines>
    INSERT INTO FILES VALUES('.\COFFEEBREAK.properties','COFFEEBREAK.properties')
    INSERT INTO FILES VALUES('.\COFFEEBREAK.data','COFFEEBREAK.data')
    INSERT INTO COFFEES VALUES('French_Roast',49,8.99,0,0)
    INSERT INTO COFFEES VALUES('Espresso',150,9.99,0,0)
    INSERT INTO COFFEES VALUES('Colombian_Decaf',101,8.99,0,0)
    INSERT INTO COFFEES VALUES('French_Roast_Decaf',49,9.99,0,0)
I had been expecting a single file ( a la Microsoft access) , with the data in it and not readable in ascii form.
Am I misunderstanding the structure of SQL / DBMS files , or is this just a pecularity of Hypersonic ??
How do I ship a finished Java application where a database can be interrogated - will the *.script file have to be shipped too? If so , all the data is there , so how is the DBMS password protected?
I'm confused ! Thanks in advance
    M.

Thanks again for the response trejkaz.
If the database were encrypted, you could just use an ordinary SQL query tool to dump >> all the records to a text file, which would be just as readable as the .script file!I had in mind if the user name was "Bill" with his (self selected ) password "hisPass" then the encryption key would be derived from a mangled version of those two bits of data (eg qazBillwsxhisPass or whatever). As long as the mangling mechanism was secret hopefully that would stop access through regular SQL query tools.
You're giving them the software to read the database anyway .. what's the difference if they >> read the info from the flat file, compared to reading it through a program? Through the program the data is view only (maybe with a limited subset of the fields for printing). With a flat file a potential competitor gets a jump start by having an electronic copy to bootleg.
Two examples occurred to me, one simple & one closer to what I'm trying to achieve
    1) An example of a multiple choice database for students where the computer tells them how they have done - couldnt the students just look up the answers beforehand in the script file ?
    2) (hypothetical example) Suppose I'm an expert on gardening & I want to set up 'electronic garden advice' Inc. I prepare a database, say about 3000 records. A typical record may have a layout based on :
    question
    question ref. number
    region
    garden style ref.
    plant type main
    plant type sub
    disease-prone?
    commercial/non commercial
    criticality weighting %
    substitute plants
    recommended treatments
    preferred season
etc . Most of us can imagine more possible fields
Anyone can pay the $ , download the database & set themselves up as an expert, maybe extracting sub sets of the data, depending on their customers needs.
But any printouts might only have say the question & question number so the whole database woulnd't be printed to a text file from my Java app . (The non printed fields are used within the Java app say for cross referencing alternatives etc) so the whole database couldn't be downloaded via a print routine to a text file.
At the moment my options seem to be:
    1) different SQL database , where the data isnt stored in ascii readable form
    2) Just use a csv text file instead of dbms & write my own encryption
    3) Encrypt the HSQL script file, have the java app decrypt it to a temp scratch file & load that way . (the problem there seems that in a multitasking OS, the user just copies the scratch file)
    4) somehow do the decryption after loading from an encrypted script file but before presenting the data on screen.
    5) any other ideas you can recommend...?!
Apologies for the long response, my thoughts on this are still evolving
    Thanks again
    Mike2z
