Music CD error : Not Readable
Hello,
I have a brand new iMac flatpanel. Today when I tried to put in a music CD, I get an error: The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer. This was actually working yesterday.
However, when I log out of the computer and log in as Admin..the CD player works properly.
Any suggestions.

When I insert a Music CD, I get a Disk Insertion message "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." I can read the CDs on 10.3.9 just fine, but not under 10.4.3. Data CDs and DVD read fine under 10.4.3. If I choose the Ignore option, Disk Utility fully recognizes the disk, but the Mount option is not selectable. Where do I start looking to get the system to recognize them again.

I don't know if this will work but its worth a shot:
Firstly, delete the finder's preference file located in YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
Next I would delete everything in the chache folder. (YourUserName/Library/Cache) You could however, if you wished just move the cache folder to another location (Like the desktop) if you wish to put it back after. Don't worry though - deleting the chache will not damage anything and in some cases will makes things better.
After deleting the chache and the preference file go to system preferences and select CD's & DVD's.
Have the options as follows: Open finder, Open finder, Open iTunes, Open iPhoto, Open DVD Player.
Now restart and when you're booted back up, insert a music CD.
It might be best if you try a few others after if the first one doesn't work, as the disk may be faulty.

I have recently purchased Toshiba 1TB hard drive and I set it up and I was able to transfer all my files onto it such as my music, photos, documents. I had correctly ejected and used it again and all these files were safely stored and accessible afterwards. However after I rebooted my computer as it had been going slow and I had too much clogging it up once I reconnected the external hard drive I have error message saying 'The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer' Three options are Initialize, Ignore or Eject. How do I access all my files? I set it up to work on both mac and windows. I have tried both another mac and windows computer and same issue occurs?? I am worried that all my personal files are gone but am confused as the drive has had absolutely no damage to it as it was in a very short time frame and its never left the same spot. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Thanks for your quick response. I had a look at your discussion... I tried it on a Windows machine and I thought that was compatible with ExFAT?
Therefore I need to attempt to use my external hard drive with a machine that boasts OS X 10.6.5 or above and then it should work?

I was playing music on iTunes (my iTunes library is stored on the hard drive) when I realized that it was running slow and giving me some pinwheels. So, I force quit iTunes, ejected the hard drive, waited a couple of seconds and plugged it back in. To my surprise it gave me an error that said "The disk you insterted is not readable by this computer" with the options to initialize, ignore, and eject. I have been searching Google, YouTube, and other forums for fixes (I am not too handy with Terminal without some assistance). I am able to go to Disk Utility and I see the drive there, and when I go to the partition is says "not mounted" I have tried repairing the disk only to get the notificiation that tells me Disk Utility is unable to repair the disk. I also ran Terminal and tried doing diskutil repairDisk and repairVolume to no avail. Below you can see the information I have gotten from Disk Ultilty and Terminal. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated as I have my music library, art projects, and other very important data on this drive! Thank you in advance!
Yikes, doesn't look too good. But there are still things you can try.
I noticed the disk is formatted as MS-DOS FAT32. While such disks can be read and used on Macs, it's better to set up your disks formatted for the Mac. For one thing, the Mac disk repair tools don't work as well on FAT32 (PC-style) disks. Which might be why Disk Utility did not succeed.
I suggest using a PC running Windows to connect the drive to and see if the data are all visible, and if not, run the built in disk check tools in Windows. Also, WD disks usually come with disk tools on the drive, did yours come with those? Either for the PC and/or Mac? You might be able to download them from the WD sites. -

everytime in the last couple of days im inserting a bank Cd to my cd/dvd drive (MATSHITADVD-R UJ-85J) im getting the same error

it only happen when the disk is blank. all other disks work ok.
haven't install any new software or hardware, but had some HDD problems.
any suggestion what should i do?

I had same issue except only repairing the permissions didn't solve anything for me. *_If you recently upgraded your iTunes to 8.2_* check your permissions for errors, fix the errors, then restart computer and if that doesn't fix it, then try one of the 3 solutions below as there is a *known burn issue with the recent 8.2 update!*
My permission errors - permissions differ on ./Applications/iTunes.app/contents... etc, should be -rw-rw-r--, they are -rwxrwxr-x
I called Apple Care and we figured out 3 work arounds til a fix is released.
Solutions 1,2 are recommended by Apple Care. I used solutions 1 (easy) and then 3 (complicated).
Option 3 is a pain and takes A LOT of time and HD space or external HD if you have tons of music, podcasts, audiobooks, etc, loaded into your iTunes.
_*3 possible solutions:*_
1. Use the Finder window already built in the mac (to burn onto blank cds) -
Open Finder Window, go to File in the Menu Bar at top of computer, create a new Burn Folder, drag items to the folder and click on the burn icon inside the folder, insert blank disk when asked, add name, select burn speed, burn the cd.
2. Use the app Burn 2.3U -
Found at Apple.com in download section works like a Finder Window and converts audo files to MP3 automatically. (You can set up iTunes to do this as well)
3. Install an older version of iTunes 8.0.2 (couldn't find 8.1 thru 8.1.051) -
I found 8.0.2 at Apple.com, this process is complicated and you will need lots of HD space or external HD to do this because you'll want to back up your music library and you will need to delete version 8.2 BEFORE trying to install an older version. Otherwise stick with option 1 or 2 til a fix is released by Apple.
I ruined 8 blank cd's that actually burned but then I got the error message "the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer (Error)" at end of burn cycle and sometimes early disk ejections. _*I had no problems before the iTunes update in the past 5 days.*_ Still can't read/play the 8 disks but the problem went away!
I had burned 20 cds no problem last week with same media disks that were producing errors after doing the iTunes update, now after chosing to downgrade my iTunes I'm back to burning with no issues!
8.2 has 2 versions 32bit or 64bit, one of them may be PC/Windows version only but not sure which one I upgraded to or if that's even a factor with the permission errors I had.

When installing my new HP printer I received the following error message when I inserted the software install disk: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" with 2 radio buttons "Ignore" or "reject" I was able to eject the disk but the message remains. Now every time I start up the printer this error message pops up on my computer. I have since used the disk drive successfully for music CD's etc. How can I get rid of this message?

Zap the PRAM
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys. -
External Hard Drive not Readable & Input/Output Error?
I was using my OWC 300gb external hard drive for a while and it's worked great. I had a bunch of files on it, but I recently transferred everything to another external HD I have, which worked fine, so I could erase this 300gb one. I can't remember what happened, but somehow my Macbook doesn't recognize this hard drive. I think erased everything and then unplugged it without ejecting it first. Anyways, nothing is on the the drive anymore and I get this error message:
"The disk you inserted was not readable by your computer"
This pops up when I restart my Macbook. When I try to use Disk Utility, it greys everything out on the partition and Disk Repair tabs. On the 'Erase' tab, it will allow me to select Erase, but then gives me the error:
"Input/Output error"
Does anyone know how to get my Macbook to see my drive (so I can start to partition it)? For some reason only Disk Utility acknowledges it's there, Finder won't.

Everyone is saying on these forums that the hard drive is failing...suck. I went and bought a new when I got input/output error and found that the new one showed the same input output error, making it impossible to partition the disk. Then the guy in the apple service center told me the new one was bad too, after having seen the code that came up related to my new scorpio 250 GB drive. Instead of sending it back, I took it out and installed the old one..however this time with a slihtly more of pressure on the tape holding down the hard drive cable between the hard drive and the circuit board. Amazingly, this time it didn't even show any hard drive at all! Then I understood what was wrong. It was exactly what was indicated an "input/output errror"! ..the cable was broken. I bought a new cable, well the Powerbookmedic sold it as new but it was an old working one that arrived. Immediately, after change of cable the old hard drive and now also the new 250 GB works perfectly! I remember that some interesting symptoms prior to all hard drive problems appeared, such as not being able to start up properly, strange blue screens, flipping question marks etc. I remember that shaking the comp occasionally worked to get it going. No wonder, shaking occasionally made it work and i believe the damaged cable maybe changed position and started conducting. The cable is very sensitive and probably should not be taped down so hard as the first service center guy at apple had done with mine when he fixed it the comp a few years ago. Polymers/plastics bent heavily become fragile/brittle with time and are specially sensitive under pressure/bent. Note that my old damaged cable still conducted and showed the hard drives but didn't work fully. I hope this will help someone, it took me 2 month to figure out..

When I plug in my external LaCie drive I get an error message "the disc you inserted was not readable by this computer."
The only options offered are "ignore" or "eject"
Disk Utility sees the disc but does not give a repair option.
What can I do?The good thing about mac-centric resellers such as OWC, is they have people on staff that can answer questions without you buying things first. They also have how-to information, and instructions are included in many of their products. I saw a link to watch a DIY video in one of their pages; an example of a RAID (with its own power supply) is shown on their drives page. Also a few in there, with no power supplies, for less money.

Some ideas on the RAID backup methods appear in google search, some of the pages are ideas and concepts; and the better ones also warn about using RAID for the only backup plan.
Oh, OWC has live chat. Haven't tried it, nor have I bought anything from them. I have what appears to be two products from them, but have not used either. One is in a box as-new, but has only USB2.0 ports & my Macs needed FW400/800. It has been said their RAM is a good way to upgrade, too. But I can't confirm!
A 'RAID-ready' unit for backup may be more versatile for just that, but I have not checked into these details. I use single HDDs in powered enclosures, and usually manually make backup clones to FW drives, of bootable OS X systems. Some of the OWC raid-ready use eSATA ports so that may not be viable for a computer without them.
The unused in-box external drive I have is like the base model in the link above. However mine is USB2.0 (maybe) and won't boot my older Macs due to hardware variance; and my preference would be for FireWire options, these models do offer that. But the one I have does not. Dual 500GB HDDs, and they could be used in tandem as a RAID. That would be a choice set up in software. I'm not sure and not interested enough to read up just now.
My backup method is not automatic, or a moving backup plan, if I don't get a move-on and make full system clones. I do make copies of photos and documents the manual way, to USB external drives; and occasionally backup to DVD or CD media. And USB flash, that helps to move files between computers without need to use file sharing via wi-fi. {Like Why fly? Walking is better exercise unless one is a bird. Squawk!}

Depending on the ports in your Mac, you may be able to use other cables to attach between a backup or externally enclosed hard disk drive with multiple partition and bootable clone in one of them. Not sure about the Thunderbolt, and where that is the main port, adapters are required to access other devices, as allowed.
Anyway, I am going on and on, yet not really saying anything.
My ideas would not be all that interesting to follow as a backup
plan when matching available newer hardware to task, but you
can get some into better ideas if you are not in a rush. Get a
good setup and then look into more an betterer stuff.

I've been getting the error message "The disk you inserted was not readable by the computer". I can't open system preferences, disk utility, or Time Machine. I got a new to me Imac and I inserted a disk that was not readable. Now an error comes up each time when I turn on the machine that says the inserted material is not readable, ignore or eject. Either gets it to go away. I have burned disks after that.

Re. the Displays setting, the Macbook display isn't recognized and mirroring isn't an available option.
I've scoured the net and the idea of replacing the PRAM battery may be something to try. I read a post by a guy with a Macbook logic board screwed up by a Firmware update, which he solved by replacing the PRAM battery, as when you disconnect it you reset the logic board.
Which capacitor?
No luck so far with talking to Apple. I will try to get hold of someone a little more tech savvy and/or in a position of authority, as it seems that the Firmware is the culprit. Obviously a million other things could go wrong with a Macbook, but given the timing here it looks like the Firmware. Firmware updates can and occasionally do screw up a computer, as most manufacturers will warn you before you apply the update: PC makers, printer makers, etc. And they probably warn you that it's all your responsibility if anything goes wrong. But re. the Apple Firmware update:
1) it came thru Software Update
2) there was no warning
3) to make things worse, there's no Firmware Restoration image that I can burn to a CD to reflash the logic board: this is the only Apple computer that doesn't have a Firmware Restoration option
I'll try to get thru to a manager and convince him/her that the firmware may have been the cause.
Do you think an authorized Apple tech might have access to some way to do a firmware restoration? Something not avaiable to mere mortals? Because if not, the only solution looks like a new logic board. -

Hello. I've had my iMac for a little over three months and I've encountered a strange problem. I play Warcraft III, and whenever I insert the disk into the drive, I get an error message saying "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" and it gives me the options to ignore or eject. I've gotten the same message with Starcraft as well. I also tried putting in the iPod Nano install disk with the same result. CD-Rs and Audio cds work smoothly though. I called Apple technical support and they told me to call 1-800-MY-APPLE to schedule an appointment with my local branch to bring it in. I just wanted to make sure no one on these forums can help me. All help is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

- Verify the file and disk formats on your camcorder and on your friend computer whether they support what you want to do. Also, if you are using a specific application to do the task, you may need to verify an application whether it supports the file format (e.g. MPEG4, Apple Intermediate Codec).
- Verify the device cable type whether Mac OS X 10.4.x supports.
- Verify the device compatibility with Mac OS X 10.4.x.
- Check an available firmware or driver for the camcorder that has developed after Mac OS X 10.4.4.
- Try diagnosing and repairing local hard disk and camcorder's drive directory.
- Verify disks permissions issue.
- Verify whether the disk is TOO warm or cold to read.
- If every troubleshooting does not solve the issue, consider to reformat the camcorder drive.

This may be a silly question but how do I get my music from my old ipod to the Ipod touch. when I go to move my music a error pops up saying your music wasn't copied to this ipod because it can not be played on this ipod. what can I do??

"File not readable" error in CS6
I've opened the file, worked on the file, saved the file and suddenly I'm getting a "File not readable" error upon open. Running CS6. One file was saved out to CS5 compatible. Created another test file and it saved out and reopened without issue.
Mac Yosemite. Only update done between opening was an Adobe Flash Player, which really shouldn't affect this. I've also tried pulling the file again from my cloud account to see if it was corrupted on my desktop...same issue.
Anyone having this issue and know how to solve for it?skredberry,
Are you saving to your own harddisk?
It is always recommended here to open/save your documents from/to your own harddisk, then copy to external media/servers/whatever as backup.
You may be lucky (for a while), but the chances of file corruption and other unpleasantnesses are immensely greater when you use anything but the harddisk. -
CS4 unable to place image ERROR: The file is not readable
Hi All,
I have been experiencing big issues with Illustrator CS4 and placing images into a document.
Basically I will be working on say a packaging project and after about the 4th image being placed I will get the error message The file is not readable I select OK (the only option available)
RESULT: no file placed no where to go?
I then have to save the document, close Illustrator, re-open, open the document and then the image will usually place (not always first time though and sometimes I will have to reboot the whole system!) but then the 5th, 6th, 7th image after that I have to follow the same procedure!... The image files are fine, 300ppi, 20-30MB max, PSD, TIFF, JPG dose not matter all follow the same issue... but eventually after a lot of rebooting and loading the so called un-readable files will go into the document.
Also the image will place sometimes but the same error message will appear on attempting to embed the image!
All very annoying and massively time consuming!!!
To top it off since the above, random AI files when loading up will crash Illustrator out... again after a reboot the same file will open fine with no problems???

Many Thanks!!Well, I just encountered the same issue using Illustrator CS5...getting the "The File Is Not Readable" error message...first time that's happened in the 14 years of using the program. It seems the file size was too large for Illustrator (or one of my computers) to handle. So I opened the file using one of my other computers and deleted the unused layers to reduce the file size. Originally, there were 6 layers with 3 different versions of the artwork and what I ended up having to do is create 3 separate files rather than having it all in 1.
